13 Inch Gaming Laptop

Don't Miss

What Screen Size Is Best For A Gaming Laptop

Best 13-inch Gaming Laptop: Surface Book 2

This will arguably have the most immediate impact on your choice of the build. Picking the size of your screen basically dictates the size of your laptop. A 13-inch machine will be a thin-and-light ultrabook, while a 17-inch panel almost guarantees workstation stuff. At 15-inches, you’re looking at the most common size of the gaming laptop screen.

Do I Really Need A Gaming Laptop

Gaming laptops aren’t a necessity for anyone, especially if you don’t do much gaming at all. In fact, if you don’t plan to use your new laptop primarily for gaming, you’ll get a lot more value for money by looking at more mainstream laptops without a dedicated GPU: their battery life is better and they tend to have more vibrant displays designed for movies and office work.

If you are a gamer, though, and want to spend most of your time on your laptop gaming, then you should definitely consider it. The latest gaming laptops offer amazing performance that rivals some powerful desktops, and they almost all come with fast displays so you get a smoother and more responsive gaming experience.

They also come with handy features like smart power switching technologies that maximize efficiency and performance so make sure your games are playing at their best without sapping too much battery life or outputting too much heat. Speaking of which, most gaming laptops have excellent cooling, too, to make sure your system stays relatively cool and doesn’t get too noisy while playing .

You’ll find that most gaming laptops have good quality keyboards too, as a responsive keyboard can make all the difference in some games. You’ll probably still want to add in a gaming mouse too, though, as touchpad gaming is notoriously difficult.

How Do I Know What Size My Laptop Is

To quickly measure your screen, grab your ruler, measuring tape, or other measuring tools and hold it diagonally across your screen. The measuring device should stretch from the top corner to the opposite bottom corner. Be sure not to include the borders of your screen in your measurements. If you dont have any tool to measure the screen physically, try searching for your laptop make and model number online.

Hp Spectre X360 13 Laptop

The 13-inch HP Spectre x360 has been a favorite of ours for years and has been so close to perfection. HP did what any good manufacturer should do and acted on feedback to make the Spectre x360 even better. Changes like the new Precision-powered touchpad and thinner bezels make it far more appealing to both use and gaze at.

There are a variety of screen choices available that cover both 1080p and 4K. HP still hasn’t departed from using a 16:9 aspect ratio, which could be argued as looking a little dated in modern laptops. Still, performance is right up there with 11th Gen Intel CPUs, 16GB of RAM, and 2TB M.2 PCIe. There’s Wi-Fi 6 available for a better wireless experience.

If you want the best non-convertible laptop, the Dell XPS 13 would be your best bet. The Spectre x360 13 offers fantastic value with more modes and optional LTE. It’s a reliable all-around Windows laptop and tops more than one of our roundups, including the best Windows 10 LTE laptops.

Finding The Best Gaming Laptop

Alienware 13 ANW13

While many of the best gaming laptops come with a 1080p display and high refresh rates, some include 4K screens, so you can pick between fidelity and resolution. Several gaming laptop go as fast as 360 Hz. There are also an increasing number of 2560 x 1440 display options, giving you an option other than 1080p or 4K.

There is more choice than ever in components, too. While Intel is still a popular option, AMD’s Ryzen processors are becoming more common, though the majority of notebooks in general still use Intel. On the GPU side, Nvidia’s RTX GPUs are in far more laptops, though AMD is slowly starting to pair its own graphics cards with hits CPUs for what it calls an “AMD Advantage.”The latest technologies in processors include Intel’s 12th Gen “Alder Lake” processors, which use a hybrid design with Performance and Efficient cores, and AMD’s Ryzen 6000 CPUs. Just like desktops, anything with the latest graphics cards can still be hard to come by right now thanks to a global components shortage.

Buyers Guide: Things To Consider Before You Buy A Best 13

The more you know about the product the better your choice will be. You just cant grab anything without knowing much about the product as its an expensive device.

Features and specs certainly indicate whether it is the best device or not, but how do you know whether its good for you or not.

The answer is quite simple you should know your needs and priorities. If you know this then your task is easy. And your job will be much easier if you ponder some aspects before picking a laptop.

Movability:

The reason these machines are so popular is that 13-inch laptops are ultraportable. It is the perfect blend of screen and weight. For instance, when we look at Dell XPS it weighs just 2 pounds but comes with a 13.3-inch display.

Some 13-inch laptops are also heavy but not as much as that 15 or 17-inch laptops but considerable when you compare them to other laptops of their size.

So, its better to get a laptop with lesser weight as it is the main reason for picking a 13-inch laptop.

Battery Life:

No matter which size of laptop it is 13 or 17 inches the battery life is the most crucial feature of any gaming laptop.

Portable devices need to give long runtimes or else their movability will not be of much use. Try to get a laptop that comprise at least 9 hours of battery time. And if you get something around 13 hours that will be fantastic.

Memory:

Budget:

Keyboard:

Ports:

But if you look closely there isnt that much big difference as they usually just add 1 or 2 extra ports.

Gaming On Turbo Performance And Silent

Lets go through the performance logs that show the CPU and GPU speeds and temperatures in Farcry 5, Shadow of Mordor, Cyberpunk 2077, and Battlefield V on the various profiles.

Overall the performance is solid, and the temperatures are fine across all the tested titles. Again, some games such as SOTTR or Cyberpunk 2077 properly support Dyn Boost 2.0 and shift power onto the GPU, which runs at up to 100W sustained on the Turbo profile. In this case, both the CPU and the GPU average temperatures in the mid to high 70s.

Other games, such as Far Cry 5 and Battlefield 5 dont scale up with Dyn Boost that well, especially and lower resolutions, and the CPU ends up running in the mid to high 80s in this case, which is still OK.

Here are the logs and FHD+ resolution.

And the logs and QHD+ resolution, which put more effort onto the GPU and diverts more power from the CPU as a result.

Lifting up the laptop from the desk doesnt do much, barely impacting anything on the Turbo mode. Not something to bother with.

The Performance profile doesnt seem to do a whole lot here either. The CPU/GPU run at slightly lower power and frequencies, the GPU looses the ROG Boost overclocking, and the fans drop from 50+ dB on Turbo to around 47-48 dB on this mode. This could be further tweaked IMO Id rather see a 44-45 dB noise floor on this middle setting.

Dell Alienware Aw 133 Inches Gaming Laptop

This laptop is made from the production of the Dell House. It is well-built and comes with an attractive design. The amazing OLED screen provides good contrast and brightness to the users. It gives you a great impression of gaming laptops. In the case of configuration, the performance of the laptop is much better and more advanced. The keyboard is very comfortable and can be easily used by users.

Design Construction And Ergonomics

The BEST Gaming Ultrabook! Just One Big Issue…

As mentioned already, the M16 is built on the exact same chassis as the G15 that weve already reviewed here on the site, with only a couple of small differences in design and IO: the M16 is available in a Black color , gets Thunderbolt 4 ports, the 16:10 screen with a smaller bottom bezel, and a taller rubber foot on the bottom, which allows the laptop to sit at a slightly more inclined angle and higher by default, facilitating the airflow of fresh air into the fans at the same time.

Our test model is the Black variant, which I think looks nice and professional out of the box. Still, it does smudge very easily, both on the lid and interior, especially since Asus went with a slightly softer and more rubberized coating for the arm-rest on this series. So youll have to clean this often.

This coating is not like any of the others Ive seen on past Asus laptops. While it seems fairly strong and scratch-resistant, I cant comment on how this will age, especially around the edges or the ports, where similar coatings tend to peel and scuff off, based on our experience with other rubberized finishes. Time will tell

As far as the construction goes, the main chassis still creaks when you pick up the laptop and the lid is rather fragile and flexible, so make sure to keep this in a protective backpack when carrying it in your backpack, and try not to lift it up from the corners as much as possible.

Zephyrus G15 3080 Vs 3070 In Games

Ive already shown you the tiny performance differences between the 3070 and 3080 versions of the G15 in benchmarks. But how about games?

Well, I cant get into a lot of details because Ive tested the 3080 and Derek the 3070, and we dont have the same titles and the same testing procedures. But here are a few results for you:

3080 QHD Turbo
111 fps 112 fps

Take these with a lump of salt, as explained above.

I wouldnt expect more than 10% difference in rasterization performance at FHD between the two GPU versions, and perhaps a little higher at QHD.

The 3080 takes a bigger lead in RTX games, but youll most likely have to lower the details for 60+ fps in the more demanding RTX titles on both versions.

How We Test Laptops

We put each laptop through extensive benchmark testing â both synthetic and real-world â before they end up in the hands of our reviewers. We evaluate each aspect of the laptop, including its performance, battery life, display, speakers and heat management.

In our benchmark testing, we use a Klein K10 colorimeter to detect the brightness and DCI-P3 color gamut of the laptop’s display. For performance testing, we run the laptop through a gauntlet of benchmarks, including Geekbench 5.0 and 3DMark professional graphics tests.

To determine real-world performance, we task the laptop to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution and to duplicate a 25GB multimedia file. Our real-world graphics test is the Dirt 5 benchmark with medium settings at 1080p resolution.

We also run heat tests by playing a 15-minute full-screen video and measuring temperatures in different areas of the laptop. Last but not least, our battery test consists of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. For MacBooks and premium Windows 11 laptops, a runtime of over 9 hours is considered a good result whereas gaming laptops and workstations that can stay powered for longer than 5 hours deserve praise.

These tests are complemented with extensive hands-on testing from our reviewers who critique everything from the laptop’s materials to the feel of its touchpad.

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Nano

  • Bezels are a bit large

Why you should buy this: It’s the best lightweight 13-inch laptop.

Who’s it for: Users who want a 13-inch laptop that won’t weigh them down.

Why we chose the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano:

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano is a super-light laptop that still packs a ton of power. The non-touch model weighs only 1.99 pounds, and the touch model is only slightly heavier at 2.14 pounds. That’s even lighter than the most recent LG Gram, which has long claimed the ultra-portable throne with its 2.2-pound weight. The ThinkPad X1 Nano is built like other ThinkPads, too, sporting a carbon-fiber hybrid material that’s as sturdy as laptops that weigh twice as much.

The high-end configuration comes with an Intel Core i7-1180G7, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. If portability is more important than power, you can also configure the ThinkPad X1 Nano with an i5-1130G7, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. Regardless of the configuration, the machines come with a 16:10 2K display with a peak brightness of 450 nits and support for Dolby Vision HDR.

The non-traditional resolution leads to better battery life overall, beating 4K displays like the one in the Spectre x360. Despite stiff competition from Dell, HP, and LG, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano is a showstopper. It maintains the ThinkPad flair Lenovo is known for while cutting the weight significantly, all without sacrificing performance or battery life.

What Cpu Do You Need For Gaming

Best 13

Intel and AMD are the main processor brands used for any computer, and the only two you want for a gaming computer. Their chips have gone through huge revolutions in design and performance potential in recent years. Chips continue to gain in efficiency and battery life is better than ever.

Although CPU performance isn’t the keystone of gaming performance it once was, it’s still important to have a good CPU, and there are some games, like F1 22 and Microsoft Flight Simulator that really benefit from it.

The specific performance of the CPU in your laptop will depend as much on the system’s cooling as it will the CPU model, but as a general rule, you want a gaming laptop with a recent-generation CPU. For AMD laptops, that’s a Ryzen 4000, 5000, or 6000 chip. For Intel, it’s 11th or 12th generation. In both cases, though, you’ll get a much better CPU if you can stick to the AMD Ryzen 6000 and Intel 12th-generation ranges, as they made big leaps in performance and efficiency over their predecessors.

The types of games you play has a big impact on the type of processor you need. If youre a casual gamer or playing simpler indie games, then you likely won’t need anything too powerful.

What Youll Want To Consider When Buying A 13

Portable :

The first thing to know is that 13-inch laptops are perfect if youre on the go. Lugging along a 17-inch or even a 15-inch machine isnt really practical. But if you want an extremely portable, lightweight laptop, 13-inch laptops are great. They will also fit in just about any backpack, along with things such as a mouse and a headset, with room to spare.

Gaming Performance:

Now, considering these laptops are made to be small and lightweight, youll find that powerful GPUs such as the RTX2080 cant really work well there, as it would cause overheating. However, you have options such as the Blade Stealth or the Surface Book 2 which include GPUs such as the GTX1650, GTX 1050, or the 25W variant of the MX150 4GB. These are pretty good for gaming at 720p to 1080p at high to lower settings depending on the game. Others include the 10W variant of the MX150 2GB, which isnt as powerful but can still run games such as Overwatch, Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege, and others with similar requirements.

What Size Screen Do I Need Do I Need A 4k Screen

One of the reasons I like 14-inch more than 15-inch displays is because they strike a much better balance among price, size and performance while sacrificing only about 0.6 inches horizontally and 0.8 inches vertically of screen real estate horizontally if the comparison is between a 16:9 aspect ratio screen and 3:2).

Resolution, the number of vertical x horizontal pixels that comprise the image, is inextricable from screen size when you’re choosing a screen. What you really want to optimize is pixel density, the number of pixels per inch the screen can display, or its reciprocal, pixel pitch. Those determine how sharp the screen looks , as well as how big elements of the interface, such as icons and text, can appear.

You can easily calculate the pixel density of any screen at DPI Calculator. But my rule of thumb for laptop screens in the 14- and 15-inch size class: FHD is fine, QHD is better and 4K is usually overkill.

Noise Heat Connectivity Speakers And Others

The thermal module on the Zephyrus M16 is similar to the ones on the 2021 Zephyrus G15, with two high-capacity fans and a multitude of heatpipes, as well as un-obstructed air grills on the bottom. There are also high-quality VRMs on this series, as well as liquid metal on the CPU. Regular thermal paste is still used for the GPU.

As explained in the previous section, this cooling module does an excellent job at taming the components in this Zephyrus M16, both in daily use and in demanding loads and games.

The fans run loud, though, at 50+ dB on Turbo and 47-48 dB on Performance. Im OK with the Turbo fans being loud, but Id prefer the Performance profile to be a better balance of noise and thermals at around 44-45 dB. In all fairness, sub-40 dB gaming is possible on the Silent profile, but with a significant loss in performance that not everyone will be comfortable with. Bottom point, Im good with Turbo and Silent, but the Performance fan profile could be further tweaked.

For what it is worth, you also get the ability to manually adjust the fans in the Manual mode, and they can go up to 52-53 dB at head-level at max, but with little to no impact over the internal and exterior temperatures.

Daily Use streaming Netflix in EDGE for 30 minutes, Silent profile, fans at 0 dB

The exterior temperatures rise up with demanding loads and games, as you can tell from the images below, on a couple of different power and fan profiles.
