Wer Hat Mehr Apps: Chromebooks Oder Windows Pcs

Was Ist Der Unterschied Zwischen Einem Chromebook Und Einem Laptop

How Much Local Storage Do You Need

There is no denying Windows and macOS laptops have the upper hand when it comes to storage. While 128GB is plentiful in the Chromebook world, Windows and macOS laptops with that amount of storage are seriously lacking. If you have a huge collection of movies, videos, photos, music, and other files, you might want to consider going with Windows or macOS. Taking advantage of the cloud is another great alternative.

You can always use external storage too. External hard drives, SD cards, and USB flash drives can help alleviate the commonly low storage space in Chromebooks. Check out the links below for our recommendations.

Which Is More Secure A Chromebook Or A Windows Pc

Acer

Security isnt a question that can be answered absolutely, but Chromebooks and Windows PCs differ fundamentally here. The relative simplicity of a Chromebook offers a far smaller attack surface than a Windows PC does. The complexity of Windows PCs, including the software Windows supports, provides hackers many more opportunities to attack.

Google developed Chromebooks with security as a priority, using everything from isolated, sandboxed processes to verified boot to help protect your system. For people who worry about websites that hijack your browser or download malware, a Chromebooks defenses protect you without making you think about it much.

Keeping a Windows PC safe can be a much more complicated business. Security starts as soon as you begin setting up a new PC. Regular maintenance is required for both your antivirus software and the Windows operating system, though most happens automatically. Still, holes are constantly being discovered, such as the Meltdown/Spectre vulnerabilities, as well as the more recent Foreshadow/L1TF exploit. You have to be vigilant, or at least not too lazy, to protect your Windows PC. Fortunately, Windows built-in Windows Defender software is far better than it used to be, enough that Windows can basically take care of itself.

Windows 11, though, introduces a huge wrinkle: some PCs simply wont be upgradable to Windows 11, because they lack the required hardware, including whats known as a TPM.

Check That Your Laptop Will Meet The Requirements

CloudReadys system requirements are very minimal: Just 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, full BIOS access, and manufactured after 2007.

Like Chrome OS, CloudReadys system requirements are very minimal. The laptop must have 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, full BIOS access, and ideally been manufactured after 2007. You will still need to check your CPU model, though, as Neverware says that processors with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500, 600, 3600, or 3650 graphics hardware dont meet CloudReadys performance standards.

Your best-case scenario is to find your laptop on Neverwares list of certified devices, which clearly outlines support for features like a webcam or touchscreen. We lucked out that our test model, a 2013 Lenovo ThinkPad X240, had full feature support across the board.

We lucked out with our test machine, a Lenovo ThinkPad X240: All of its major features are supported.

Note: On the compatibility list, youll see desktop systems like iMacs and NUCs listed as wellso if you have a spare monitor, mouse, and keyboard, you can instead spin up a Chromebox. Systems running integrated graphics work best.

If your laptop meets the hardware requirements but isnt on the certified devices list, dont worry. You can try out CloudReady from the flash drive youll create next, which will allow you to test out how well it works without having to nuke your system.

What’s The Difference Between Chromebooks And Laptops

To the untrained eye, a Chromebook and a laptop may look the same. After all, a Chromebook is technically a laptop, just with a different operating system. Both are notebooks with a keyboard, a camera, a built-in screen, and a trackpad. And, just like laptops, many Chromebooks are clamshells, while quite a few others tout touchscreen displays and a 2-in-1 form factor.

Internally, however, the two couldnt be more different. If youre doing a Chromebooks vs laptops comparison in terms of power, a strong case is made for laptops. Thats because typically they have more capable microprocessors usually from Intel or AMD and more robust integrated or discrete graphics powering them.

On the other hand, Chromebooks usually have lower-performing chips and graphics inside, although a handful of premium Chromebooks have been known to run on Intel Core chips. The reason for this is two-fold: the Chrome OS is lightweight enough that it really doesnt need a powerful chip to run, and it keeps the cost of Chromebooks down.

Traditional laptops run on much more robust operating systems Windows 10, macOS and Linux, an open source operating system. These Windows laptops and MacBooks usually require high-powered graphics cards and processors, as well as faster memory, which means they tend to cost more. The upside is that students can use the same computer to write a term paper on that they do to play Overwatch post-homework.

Theres An End Of Life Date To Worry About

Chromebooks receive automatic updates to provide users with the latest features and keep their devices secure but not indefinitely.

Each Chromebook comes with an Auto Update Expiration date, after which updates will no longer be supplied for that device, and it may not be advisable to use it .

Now, this isnt entirely dissimilar to what happens to other types of devices for example, Apple wont always roll out the latest version of its OS to older computers.

And you could argue that knowing exactly how long your device will last for lets you manage future hardware purchasing plans better.

But as youll see from the reader comments below AUE dates are clearly not popular with some Chromebook users.

Ports And Touch Screen Included

When it comes to ports, the Chromebook 514 boasts a satisfying mix, with modern additions like two USB-C connections that support features like DisplayPort over USB-C, Thunderbolt 4, and USB chargingboth for charging the laptop and for powering up your phone or tablet.

But youll also get more traditional ports, with no adapter needed, like a USB-A port for use with older storage devices and peripherals, a microSD card slot, and an HDMI-out port for connecting to a monitor or TV. Throw in the headset audio jack and a case lock slot, and youve got a pretty well-equipped laptop.

The Acer Chromebook 514 includes touch-screen capability, which is not only a great addition for general use, but also an essential feature for using Android apps on the laptop.

But touch is just one facet of the display. The IPS panel offers rich color and wide viewing angles, while also delivering good contrast and brightness. While Chrome OS doesnt support our usual laptop display tests, its easy to see that the full HD panel is better than many of the lower-resolution screens that still show up on inexpensive models for students.

Overall Winner: Windows 10

Microsoft’s Windows came out on top in this battle, winning nine out of 12 rounds and tying in one round. It simply offers shoppers more more apps, more photo and video-editing options, more browser choices, more productivity programs, more games, more types of file support and more hardware options. You can also do more offline. Plus, the cost of a Windows 10 PC can now match the value of a Chromebook.

If you’re comfortable living in the cloud and you want to get stuff done in a secure yet simple environment, a Chromebook will suit you nicely. However, if you need power and versatility, Windows 10 reigns supreme.

Chromebooks Are For Casual Users

Its not that Chromebooks cant take care of serious work. I have used them to edit professional photos and write articles for Android Authority. Theyre just not meant to take on certain tasks extensively.

Chromebooks will work amazingly if most of what you do can be done with a browser. Email checkers, Netflix bingers, social media buffs, and web surfers will have a blast using these machines. You can use Google Drive for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Google Drive can also harness the power of the cloud for your storage needs.

While Chromebooks have the Google Play Store and its wide portfolio of apps, I am not a fan of depending too much on these. Android apps are usually not well designed to work on larger computer screens. The UI can be a bit messy, and bugs are common. These Android apps work, but the experience isnt as refined as it should be.

If you decide to rely on Linux apps, given that your Chromebook supports them, you will find that the portfolio of available apps is not as wide. Windows and macOS still have Linux beaten on this department.

How Are Chromebooks For Offline Use

Acer C720

Chromebooks are designed to rely heavily on the Internet, which means that many apps simply won’t work if you’re out of Wi-Fi range. There are more than 200 offline Chrome apps that can work without Internet connectivity, including Gmail, Pocket and Google Drive, and tons of the Android apps will also work offline.

What Are Chromebooks Good For

When Chromebooks were first introduced over a decade ago, the world wasnt quite as comfortable with the idea of running apps remotely. Now, with more devices taking advantage of the cloud and more apps becoming subscription services, the benefits of using a Chromebook have become even more obvious.

Here are just some of the things a Chromebook can do:

  • A Chromebook can view, edit and create Microsoft Office documents.
  • You can play games when using a Chromebook.
  • A Chromebook can do photo and video editing.
  • You can stream music on a Chromebook.
  • A Chromebook can become a remote desktop.
  • You can use a Chromebook to attend meetings and chat with family.
  • A Chromebook can stream movies.
  • Many Chromebooks can function as either a laptop or tablet.

Womit Surft Man Besser

Do Chromebooks Need An Internet Connection

When Chromebooks first launched they basically became paperweights when they were offline — a real issue if you were in the middle of editing an important document you suddenly couldn’t save because your web connection dropped. Things have thankfully gotten better as Google improved offline capabilities and common apps like Netflix, YouTube and Spotify have offline options as well.

For a regular laptop, being offline is a little less of a problem since you’re using installed software that saves to internal storage. While neither experience is great offline these days, Chromebooks are not a great choice if you’re not willing and able to be online most of the time. On the upside, Google has made it very easy for Android users to turn their phones into instant mobile hotspots and to have Chromebooks and Android devices work better together.

Chromebook: Kein Computer Wie Jeder Andere

What is a Chromebook?

Pros Of Using Chromebooks

  • Chromebooks are very cheap by comparison to traditional laptops / computers.

  • Chrome OS is fast and stable.

  • Machines are typically light, compact and easy to transport.

  • They have long battery life.

  • Viruses and malware pose less of a risk to Chromebooks than other types of computer.

  • Chromebooks can reduce reliance on IT professionals and lower software costs.

  • They integrate very neatly with Google Workspace.

  • Theyre a good option if you chiefly use browser-based apps for work or entertainment.

Who Are Chromebooks For

Overall, the best way to tell if someone will enjoy owning a Chromebook is if you know they already spend most of their time in the Chrome browser. Those users will take to the notebook naturally.

If you’re buying this Chromebook for someone else, you should take a few moments to consider how they’re going to use the device. Chromebooks are especially good for younger students, as they are ease to use and are fairly secure. It’s also quite easy to update your Chromebook, and even better, these laptops often do that themselves.

Children who are still learning how to use computers may be more receptive to learning how a new operating system works, and while there’s no official Minecraft title for Chrome OS, the Android-based Minecraft: Pocket Edition will become available on certain Chromebooks later this year.

Some elder relatives may have never truly understood Windows enough to use their PC frequently, but others who have learned just enough to make do may become frustrated that they need to relearn where downloads go, or that their favorite app is not available for Chrome.

But if your office will support Chrome OS, you might want to look into getting your company to spring for the Dell Latitude 5400 Chromebook, a proper business laptop with great battery life and strong performance.
