Logitech’s Universal Folio Turns Any Tablet Into A Laptop

Getting a keyboard case to go with your tablet is a lot harder than it really needs to be sometimes. Logitech’s latest creation is here to put a stop to that. The Universal Folio is exactly as it sounds, available to use with any tablet on any platform.

That’s good for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it means Windows folks aren’t left out in the cold or resigned to buying either a very expensive or a cheap low-quality keyboard. Cases like this for the iPad are pretty common, so it’s awesome to see Logitech hasn’t forgotten the Windows crowd.

The other good thing about it being universal is that you can take it with you should you ever decide to buy an iPad or an Android tablet. Just like Microsoft’s mobile keyboards, there should be no need to keep swapping out your favorite accessories all the time just to get a new device.

The Universal Folio is designed to hold 9 and 10-inch tablets and the battery life is rated at an insane two years, based on two hours of use every day. That’s a lot of typing. The corners adjust to hold different sized tablets safe and sound, and there’s even a pen loop attached for your digital scribbler.

Best of all it’s very affordable. This combined case, tablet stand and keyboard will only set you back $59.99, which represents excellent value. And it’s available now.

What Are The Best 2

The best 2-in-1 laptop we’ve tested is the HP Envy x360 13. We can’t get over its stunning chassis and surprisingly low price. Beyond the design, the Envy x360 13 offers a bright and colorful display, fast performance and mind-blowing battery life.

If the Envy x360 13 isn’t for you, take a look at the Lenovo Yoga 9i or Dell XPS 13 2-in-1. These competing 2-in-1 laptops are direct rivals to the fantastic Spectre x360 14 and might be a better option for you depending on your needs and preferences. Business users should consider the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga, which is essentially a more flexible version of the X1 Carbon.

But laptops that convert into tablets aren’t the only devices that fall under the “2-in-1” umbrella. Tablets with detachable keyboards are another option for those who want something more portable. If you’re in that group, Microsoft has you covered with the Surface Pro 8. The Lenovo Chromebook Duet is an excellent low-cost option while the Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S7 Plus are pricier tablet-first convertibles running Android 10.

Surface Laptop Studio Review: Audio

Microsoft knows great sound.

Listening to RÜFÜS DU SOL’s “Underwater” through the Surface Laptop Studio’s quad Omnisonic speakers evoked the same drama the Australian band created days before I wrote this review at the Austin City Limits music festival. Armed with two woofers firing out of the sides and a pair of tweeners pushing sound through the keyboard, the speakers produced thumping bass without ever obscuring the song’s soaring vocals and dream-like synths.

Next, I played Dayglow’s “Close to you” and found myself helplessly tapping my foot to the groovy beat. Vocals were front and center, each instrument had its place in the soundstage, and the depth of low-end oomph wasn’t what I’ve come to expect from a laptop.

Enough Performance For Basic Tasks But Not Heavy Multitasking

The Surface Go 3 mostly held up fine for our daily workflow, which consists of jumping between various Google Docs and other Chrome tabs while checking in on emails, Slack messages and Discord chats. However, the limits of our review units modest Intel Core i3 processor and 8GB of RAM showed themselves pretty quickly, and we wouldnt recommend this machine for anyone who needs to do anything more than basic web surfing, video streaming and light work tasks like email and word processing.

Microsofts tiny 2-in-1 slowed down for us on multiple occasions, particularly when it came to multitasking. Slack started moving glacially slow while we installed a program in the background, taking seconds to simply switch between different chats. There was also some occasional sluggishness when opening apps or swiping up to go into multitasking mode.

The majority of our work time with the Go 3 was fairly smooth, but there were just enough of these frustrating moments to give us pause. Microsofts detachable also trailed the cheaper $329 iPad by a notable margin on our benchmark tests, and fell way behind the scores we saw on the $499 iPad Mini and the $649 Galaxy Tab S7. On the Geekbench 5 test that measures overall performance, the Go 3s benchmark scores were about half of what we got from the Galaxy Tab S7 and nearly a third of what we saw from the latest iPad Mini.

  • iPadOS is great for multitasking
  • 256GB may be more storage than necessary

While Apple certainly isnt known for its low prices, the latest 2021 10.2-inch iPad is a great value for under $500. Its got all the power and features youd expect in an Apple device, such as an A13 Bionic chip, retina display, 10-hour battery life, and compatibility with an Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard. With 256GB of storage, its powerful enough to use for work when paired with the keyboard cover to turn into a laptop. The 10-inch size is just the right amount of screen real-estate for many users too, whether you just use a tablet to read e-books, watch videos in bed, or take notes with the pen during online lectures.

A Standout In A Crowded Field

How to Turn Your Android Tablet into a Computer

The market for premium Windows laptops is ultracompetitive, with Dell, Asus, Acer, HP, Lenovo, and other companies updating their flagship models frequentlysometimes more than once per year. The XPS 13 2-in-1 is up against similarly excellent convertible laptops with 13-inch screens, among them the HP Spectre x360 13 and the Asus ZenBook Flip S. Several of these have been updated with Intel’s 11th Generation Tiger Lake Core processors or their AMD equivalents, the Ryzen 4000 series.

I’ll get into why the XPS 13 2-in-1 rises to the top of this field below, but the first question shoppers should consider is whether they need a convertible laptop or the also-excellent conventional clamshell-style XPS 13. The main difference between the two is the 2-in-1’s 360-degree rotating hinge. This lets you use it not only as a laptop, but it also allows you to prop it up on your desk like an easel or tent , or use the system in your lap as a tablet. In these modes, your main interaction with the laptop is via its touch screen. Fingers or Dell’s optional digital stylus can be used to write, draw, and manipulate onscreen elements, while the pop-up virtual keyboard built into Windows 10 serves as a means of typing.

Tablet Features To Consider Before You Buy

Generally, Android users may want an Android tablet and iPhone users may prefer an iPad, but this is no longer a rule. Apple iPads may reign at the top of the list, but Android users, and even some Apple users, can now enjoy powerful iPad alternatives.

No matter which operating system you go for, considering how you plan to use your tablet before you buy is most important. Those who plan to work on-the-go or replace a laptop will require a large screen, fast processor, more storage, and long battery life, which can all be found on the premium iPad Pro. However, if you only plan to use a tablet when the work day is over or on occasional travels to stream media, then a cheaper and smaller option like the Amazon Fire may work for you.

There are plenty of devices in between these options in terms of price, size, and power. Storage options generally range from 16 to 256 GB battery power extends up to and sometimes over 10 hours screen sizes range from the mini 7.9-inch to a full 13-inch display, and weight can land anywhere between a half to two pounds. We narrowed down the best devices you can buy this year, so you can find the perfect fit for your intended use and budget from the list below.

Business In Front Party In The Back

The many affordable tablets on the market can be handy when you just want a lightweight device to take with you on the go but also want an extra-large screen to enjoy media on. Unfortunately, standalone tablets just don’t tend to have the same productivity chops of proper laptops, especially since they tend to lack a keyboard and many of the ports of a laptop. But, 2-in-1 detachable laptops offer the best of both worlds.

With a 2-in-1 detachable laptop, you’re getting all your computing hardware packaged into the form factor of a tablet, and you can get a seamlessly designed keyboard dock that turns the device into a fully functioning laptop. Better yet, by making your laptop and tablet one and the same device, you won’t have to deal with downloading and copying the same programs and data to separate devices. Many of these devices will have an edge on traditional laptops as well, as they tend to have more capable touchscreens and stylus support that make them excellent for mobile game ports and art or design.

We’ve rounded up the very best options on the market so you can fulfill your desires for both a tablet and a laptop while only needing to purchase one device.

Connect To Powered Speakers Or Airplay To Compatible Speakers Or Bluetooth Headphones

While some tablet speakers can be loud, it does not always sound good due to its size limitation. For better sound quality, connect full size powered speakers. And, if your device do not have a 3.5mm audio port, look for AirPlay compatible or Bluetooth speakers. As for private listening, choose a good pair of Bluetooth headphones. These speakers and headphones will complete your desktop setup as an entertainment, gaming, editing, mixing or recording rig and more.

Does The Surface Pro 3 Turn Into A Tablet

Laptop That Turns into a Tablet

Internally, the Surface Pro 3 has the same Intel processor and architecture as a desktop or laptop PC. Its an ultraportable Windows PC that also doubles as a tablet. In fact, what Ive found since starting to use the Surface Pro 3 is that my iPad and iPad Mini basically sit idle, collecting dust now.

The Surface Tablet: A Laptop In Disguise

Microsofts Surface tablets are basically just laptops with a detachable keyboard and a touchscreen. They run on Windows 10, theyre compatible with all Windows software and hardware , and they can even connect to an external monitor for a desktop-like experience.

So, a Surface tablet is the go-to laptop alternative for Photoshop nerds, PC gamers, Netflix addicts, or dedicated Windows users. The thing is, most Surface tablets are low-spec machines, which may not be ideal for some people. If you want a Surface tablet that can handle resource-hungry software , then youll have to shell out some serious cash.

As an example, the $700 Surface Pro tablet only comes with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of solid-state storage. Those arent ideal specs for video editing, photo editing, or gaming. In contrast, the similarly priced Lenovo S145-15IWL laptop comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of solid-state storageand it has a bigger screen to boot. On the opposite side of that coin, the larger screen, and beefier specs also make it less portable.

Now the price disparity is only important if you need a tablet that can serve as a direct replacement to a high-spec laptop. If youre just trying to browse the web, write, watch videos, or work with Google docs, then a low-spec Surface tablet will work just fine.

What To Look For In A 2

One of the most important factors to take into consideration when shopping for a device that pulls double duty as a laptop and a tablet is what you’re going to be using it for. For someone who only needs a method to check email, watch some videos, and shop on Amazon, you’re not going to need the latest Intel i-series processor and a ton of storage. Something like the Surface Go 2 with an Intel Core m3 and the base storage will be more than enough.

That said, if you plan on using your 2-in-1 detachable to do more resource-intensive tasks like editing the occasional photo or video, then you’ll ideally want to look for an Intel Core i5 or i7 that comes with Intel’s Iris Plus Graphics.

When it comes to memory, the more the better, especially for Windows 10 2-in-1’s, but again, this is a factor that’s driven by how you intend to use your new laptop and tablet combo. 8GB for a Windows 10 device is good enough for most casual use, but you’ll want to bump it up to 16GB when possible if you plan on doing more than just online shopping and social media — and even more so if you want to game.

Another aspect to keep in mind is that most 2-in-1 detachable don’t come with a keyboard. Meaning, you’ll need to factor an extra $150 or so into the overall cost.

Connect A Real Keyboard And Mouse Or Track Pad For A Full Desktop Experience

If you havent heard, iPadOS now supports external pointing devices. Where once Apple or Steve Jobs in particular was reluctant to support any pointing device on their iPads, favouring instead the digits on your fingers, the tide has changed.

  • Save

Apart from smart keyboard covers and those with built-in touchpads, tablets now support external pointing devices too for a true desktop experience. You can get full size Bluetooth keyboard, even mechanical ones, and your favorite mouse or touchpad to drive your tablet.
