Razer Blade 1: Price And Availability

Razer Blade Pro 17 Inch Gaming Laptop Review (First Look) [HD]

The Razer Blade 14 is on sale now with prices starting at $1,800. The entry model is only available as it stands on Razer’s own store, but the higher-spec versions are available through third-party retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy.

The version with an RTX 3070 costs $2,200 and the range-topper with RTX 3080 costs $2,800.

Razer’s Blade 14 Looks Gorgeous For Gaming But It’ll Cost You Extra Green

The Razer Blade 14 is a capable gaming laptop in a slick, glowing package, but its performance comes at a price. You won’t be displeased with its lovely looking IPS display, anodized-black finish, and ample connectivity, but the Blade 14’s gaming performance doesn’t blow past its less-expensive competition. You’re paying a surcharge for style.

Surprisingly Good Battery Life

Battery life isn’t the most interesting thing to talk about, but it is an essential component of portable electronic devices. On our basic battery testing, where we lowered the display’s brightness to as close to 200 nits as possible and surfed the web until the battery died, the Blade 14 blew us awayso much so that we ran the entire benchmark again just to make sure we didn’t mess anything up.

On our battery tests, the Blade 14 netted between 6.5 to 7 hours of uptime, placing among the very best of the gaming laptops we’ve tested. That number is obviously going to be a lot smaller when you’re using the Blade 14 for some heavy gaming, but that shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone who has ever tried to fire up some Total War in a coffee shop. With the Blade 14, you can do all the basic, boring stuff for nearly a full work day’s worth of time, but don’t expect to blast through a GPU-punishing game for very long.

You Should Not Buy This If

You’re shopping on a budget

Even the entry-level model is more expensive than equivalent laptops from competitors, but the top-spec is definitely out of the reach of tighter budgets.

You work from battery power a lot

As a regular laptop for web browsing, email, lighter work, it’s fine. But if you’re anticipating the Blade 14 being a mobile workstation then you’re probably better served elsewhere. The performance drop on the battery is too great.

You already have a Razer Core X

The RTX 3080 is good, but it’s also not a desktop-class GPU and that’s why products like the Razer Core X exist. If you already have one and want to keep using it, this is not the laptop for you.

Every part of my being adores this laptop. I’m one of those who has been asking Razer for an AMD version, in almost every press briefing for a new Blade. Finally, it’s here, and it doesn’t disappoint, at least, not as a gaming machine. For its primary purpose, the Razer Blade 14 absolutely blows the doors off.

The issues with the Blade 14 are also not really Razer’s to fix. It feels unfair to level criticism towards this laptop for problems that come from AMD. There’s no reason these things should turbo on all 8-cores when you’re reading an email, for example, and the fact the temperatures don’t get too ridiculous too often is a testament to Razer’s engineers for taming the wild stallion.

Razer Book 13 Keyboard Trackpad And Audio

Razer Blade Pro 17 Gaming Laptop

Book 13’s keyboard is perfectly balanced.

Typing on Book 13 is exceptional. Razer uses much of the same gaming-keyboard expertise to deliver a very satisfying keyboard experience with ample travel and good-sized keys.

One trick that Razer left from its gaming line is per-key RGB lighting. Using Razer Synapse, you can make your keyboard cycle through all the spectrum of colors, react to typing , and various other effects. Unlike other keyboards with two or three-stage backlighting, Razer’s RGB is more akin to screen brightness, letting you slide a toggle for precise control, which is a better implementation.

If you think you don’t want a flickering rainbow keyboard during a meeting, don’t sweat it. You can just set the lights to static and pick any color you like including plain old white.

The trackpad is enormous, smooth, perfectly centered, and runs Microsoft Precision Drivers. It is superb, and I have no issues with it at all.

With custom or preset EQ and voice enhancement, THX Spatial Audio is outstanding.

For audio, Razer uses two top firing amped speakers that flank the keyboard. Again, everything is perfectly symmetrical and precise in design.

It’s a beast

Performance On Battery Vs On Mains Power

Normally, we wouldn’t make so much out of performance on battery vs on mains power for obvious reasons. But when it comes to Ryzen Mobile, there are, well, things. It’s something we’ve seen in previous laptop reviews, such as the Surface Laptop 4. On battery, performance takes a significant hit. And if you use the “better battery” or “battery saver” settings in Windows 10, clock speeds can drop below 2GHz, which is seriously low compared to the base clock.

This example from Cinebench R23 illustrates the scale of the problem.

On mains power vs battery, you’re getting up to 40% less from the CPU. OK, your laptop isn’t going to suddenly start stuttering and turn to junk, but it’s still a big hit that you might not even know is happening. And we have heard from one early owner of the Blade 14 that on battery Windows can sometimes poop the bed. Perhaps weirder is that SSD performance is halved when on battery versus being hooked up to a charger.

Update: Razer has informed us that the reduced SSD speed is due to PSPP set by AMD and is not controllable by OEMs like Razer. The policy is meant to increase battery life by reducing SSD performance. Something similar to what is happening with the CPU and GPU.

There’s something strange in the neighborhood when you go onto battery power.

Thermals show a peak of around 115F, which is quite warm, but not dangerous.

Final Thoughts And Best Pick: Razer Blade 15 Advanced

Shopping for a school laptop is quite an exciting, although stressful, affair as there are too many amazing laptops to choose from. Of course, your budget, personal tastes, and course requirements should guide your ultimate choice.

In our case, we loved the look and feel of the Razer Blade 15 Advanced laptop, starting with its sizable screen, ample storage space, and classy design. And if youre an avid gamer, the laptop will definitely blow you away.

Razer Blade 1: Competition

Probably the closest competition to the Razer Blade 14 comes from the Razer Blade 15. It’s the best gaming laptop you can buy, it’s priced similarly to the Blade 14, looks very similar but substitutes AMD for Intel processors. It makes choosing harder, though, because these are two of the most powerful gaming laptops on the planet.

There aren’t actually many 14-inch gaming laptops out there, which makes the Blade 14 something of an outlier. If you’re looking for something more compact, the ASUS ROG Flip X13 is an option, as is the Razer Blade Stealth. Both are 13-inch laptops, but you can only get a GTX 1650.

The closest competitor 14-inch laptops though are the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 and the Acer Predator Triton 300. The former also has a Ryzen 9 inside, while the Acer goes for Intel, but both are closer matches to the entry-level Blade 14.

Razer Blade 15 Laptop Review – CRAZY PRICE DROP!!!

As noted above, you can get the Razer Blade 15 Advanced with a variety of different screen options. Ours came with a 15.6-inch 1080p screen with an impressive 360 Hz refresh rate.

While we cant speak for every configuration of the Blade 15 Advanced, heres how ours fared against both the previous Blade 15 Advanced model, as well as another close competitor: the Alienware m15 R4.

Razer Blade 15 AdvancedRazer Blade 15 AdvancedAlienware m15 R4

While the Razer Blade 15 Advanced 11th-gen model is a bit brighter than its predecessor, it displays somewhat less of the sRGB spectrum and both brightness and color gamut pale in comparison to the m15 R4. On the other hand, the color accuracy is about the same

Still, for our review model, the big draw wasnt how gorgeous the screen looked; it was how fast the refresh rate could get. If youre willing to fiddle with the settings to get frame rates in the 200 fps neighborhood, rich color is arguably a secondary concern.

Best Overall: Macbook Air

Apples current-generation MacBook Air is one of the most impressive laptops of all time, and an excellent choice for any college student.

The laptop runs MacOS Big Sur, the latest version of Apples computer operating system. Apple says the laptop will be able to run MacOS Monterey, the version of the operating system that is slated to be released this fall. MacOS is designed to work seamlessly with iOS, which runs on iPhones, iPadOS, which runs on iPads, WatchOS, which runs on the Apple Watch, and tvOS, which runs on the Apple TV. If you have Apples other tech, your information messages, calendars, notes will automatically sync between devices.

On the hardware side, the MacBook Air performs very well. It has a 13.3-inch display with a resolution of 2560 X 1600, which makes it the sharpest screen out of any laptop were recommending. It runs on Apples custom M1 processor, which is more powerful and energy efficient than any chip found in previous versions of the MacBook Air.

In terms of inputs the MacBook Air is a little lacking. It has two Thunderbolt 3 ports, which means youll need an adapter to connect the computer to many older accessories, or video sources like a TV or projector. If these are tasks you need to do often, we recommend getting Belkins Thunderbolt 3 hub, which features two USB ports, two HDMI ports, and an Ethernet jack.

If youre a fan of Apple tech, and need a laptop to get you through school, the MacBook Air is an excellent choice.

Agree To Continue: Razer Blade 15 Advanced

Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it contracts that no one actually reads. Its impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But we started counting exactly how many times you have to hit agree to use devices when we review them, since these are agreements most people dont read and definitely cant negotiate.

To start using the Razer Blade 15 Advanced, youll need to agree to the following:

  • A request for your region
  • A request for your keyboard layout
  • Microsoft account
  • Syncing up your Android phone
  • OneDrive
  • Office 365
  • Cortana voice assistant
  • Privacy settings
  • Razer account

In total, thats four mandatory agreements and 15 optional agreements to use the Blade 15 Advanced.

In terms of minor but nagging faults, the matte black finish on the Blade 15 Advanced easily gets covered in fingerprints. In fact, I rushed to take photos of it for the review before I actually tested it out because you wouldnt like how it looked now. After a week of using it, it frankly looks gross. It can be cleaned, but its a chore. Id recommend getting the mercury colorway to avoid this problem, but Razer doesnt offer many configurations in that color.

But at least for now, Razer still makes the best thin-profile gaming laptop.

Now, where was I?

A Gaming Laptop You Wont Be Embarrassed To Use In Public

Best razer gaming laptop.

Razer has long mastered the magic trick of making gaming laptops that you wouldnt be embarrassed to bring into a Starbucks, and that trend continues with the latest Blade 15 Advanced. This all-black aluminum notebook packs top-of-the-line components into an impossibly slim design thats easy to carry around while still feeling sturdy and premium at around 4.5 pounds. There are no aggressive-looking jagged edges or bold colors like you might find on other gaming laptops just a sleek slab of metal that can run Call of Duty really well.

Even with edges that are just over half an inch thin, the Blade 15 Advanced still manages to pack a solid lineup of useful ports. You get two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports , three USB-A ports for using legacy accessories, a full-size SD card reader and an HDMI port for even more external monitor flexibility. Razer Blade 15 Base Model Review

The Blade 15 Base Model trims a few frills from Razer’s flagship Blade, but it keeps most of its best aspects. Just make sure you need the slim design; you’re giving up some gaming grunt to gain it.

Razer Blade 15 Advanced Review: Performance

Razer Blade 2013 Best Good For All Laptop

In terms of gaming performance, we measured how the Razer Blade 15 performed on graphical benchmarks by measuring its frame rate at 1080p resolution and Ultra settings. Heres how it compared:

Razer Blade 15 AdvancedRazer Blade 15 AdvancedAlienware m15 R4

Its unusual that the Blade 15 Advanced didnt perform as well as the Blade 15 Advanced , but there are a few potential explanations for this. The Nvidia drivers have changed over time, and the 11th-gen Intel chips are arguably not that big of an upgrade. Still, theres no denying that the GPU and RAM on the new Blade 15 Advanced are identical to the model we tested earlier this year, and the older model got better scores.

Qualitatively, however, I had no complaints about the Blade 15 Advanceds performance. I tested the machine with four of my go-to games on Nvidia-recommended settings, and had good experiences across the board: Age of Empires III , Doom Eternal , Baldurs Gate III and Final Fantasy XIV . All the games ran smoothly, and the Blade 15 Advanced was not terribly loud, even with the fans going at full blast.

Heres how the Blade 15 Advanced stacks up in terms of artificial benchmarks and productivity:
