Best Laptops Under $200

Now that you know what is a refurbished laptop computer, how do you know which are the best refurbished laptops, and how do you make a decision? Make a list of the things that are important to you in a laptop. Do you game and need expanded memory? Are you interested in a warranty so you have the coverage you need in case of minor repairs or upgrades?

Perhaps you are into watching movies and would like a super-sharp monitor to enjoy full-color entertainment, or maybe you need a work computer and would like to know about Office applications, documents, and spreadsheets. If you travel frequently, a long-lasting battery is possibly your first priority.

Honestly Speaking Is A Refurbished Laptop Good Enough

  • Buy your refurbished machine from a reputable vendor.Know and understand the return policy Know and understand what, if any warranty, applies and how to get warranty service and what the warranty includes. Research exactly what you’re buying. What are common problems or issues with that particular make/model? Have a vague idea of how you’ll take care of common repairs. If there is a warranty, what does getting warranty service entail? If there’s no warranty, how will you get things fixed if you can’t do them yourself? Know how old a given model is and where it falls on the technology curve. Know and understand how heavy your demands are. If all you need is something to check email and type papers, a toaster can do that. If you want to play games or do 3D renders, you might not get that much out of it before it starts to show its age. Decide what you can live with and without. Blemish-free refurb’d items command a premium. If you can live with issues like case scratches and scuffs, you might secure a good deal. Make sure you understand what a vendor calls “cosmetic” because there are vendors who consider screen scratches and dead pixels “cosmetic”. I am always more leary of dents than scratches, because dents usually come from impact.

Whats The Meaning Of A Refurbished Laptop

A laptop that is sold as a refurbished laptop is not necessarily a second hand product.

There could be many other reasons why the purchaser decided to resell the laptop. Returned laptops that are not packed as branded laptops are sold as refurbished laptops.

The laptops could have minor scratches or other superficial errors.

A laptop that does not match the brand or manufacturers quality is again sold as a refurbished laptop.

However, even before launching it as a refurbished laptop, manufacturers reconstruct the laptops so that they can match their standards.

Further, orders that are canceled also come down as refurbished laptops. Even if the store or shop has been over-stocked with the laptop model, the model is further sold as refurbished laptops.

In my personal opinion, a refurbished laptop that you get after a canceled order, or just because it had some scratches, is worth the purchase. After all, there has been no internal defect in the system, its almost a brand new laptop.

Moreover, Older technology based models of laptops also come as refurbished models. There are chances that you may get an untouched piece.

Refurbished Laptops Vs Chromebooks

Wouldnt it simply make more sense for you to get a new Chromebook instead of a refurbished laptop?

After all, it would be new, and new is betterright?

Ummm, thatd be a No from me, Bob.

And I say that simply because a Chromebook is really nothing more than a tablet with a keyboard attached to it.

Youre also limited to running apps from the Chrome store, as well as storing the bulk of your data in the cloud.

A refurbished laptop has none of those restrictions.

Plus, Chromebooks can cost upwards of $800, so theyre not exactly cheap, and the cheaper models tend to have tiny 11-inch screens.

Even the cheapest refurbished laptops tend to have 14 or 15-inch screens instead.

So, I know what Id spend my money on.

Does The Product Still Have A Warranty

The best cheap laptop deals in February 2020: prices start at just $62 ...

Don’t buy any product, refurbed or brand new, that is advertised “as-is” because that takes away any implied warranty a product might have. The buyer risks getting a product that may not even work properly. Simply because a device starts doesn’t mean it can go online, get a signal, etc.

The reason you may see the “as-is” clause is that used products in many states get an implied warranty by law. A product has to be able to do what it was designed to do, even if sold used. If it’s a phone, it better make calls . If it’s a laptop, it better boot up and go on the internet. If it’s a webcam, it better make you look good on that Zoom meeting.

Your best bet is to ask the seller directly if a new warranty/guarantee is in place. If the device was refurbed by the original manufacturer, this may be even more likely. Without a warranty, the savings may not always be worth it. Also, confirm the length of the warranty. Six months on a device that originally had one year is not in your favor.

Pros Of Getting Refurbished Computers

Many buyers arent interested in refurbished computers because they think there are immediate faults in the product. While some computers are sold as refurbished because of a defect, a trustworthy seller will remove the defect before selling the product. Trustworthy sellers will always repair and retest the computers before they make the sale.

With a refurb device, you get a like-new piece of hardware without a like-new price. A reputable seller will get the device in optimal condition before you buy it. As a result, you basically get a new product at a significantly discounted rate.

Sometimes, you can get new devices from canceled orders. If a customer cancels the order, the seller can no longer sell it as new. Known as open box products, these items are a great deal for their price since they have never been used.

Good Refurbished Laptop Brands

This is one of those questions that really comes down to a mixture of personal preference and experience.

If, for example, youve only ever owned Acer laptops, then youll obviously lean towards that brand when buying a refurbished laptop.

Same with Dell, HP, or whatever other brand has marketed itself most effectively to you.

But if you want my take on the best refurbished laptop brands to buy they are:

  • Lenovo/IBM

And in that order, too.

The Lenovo/IBM T4x series of laptops tend to be just short of bulletproof.

Thats why you see so many journalists using them, as well as anyone who has to travel a lot with their job they cant afford for their laptop to go to transistor heaven without any notice.

Dell is next in line and based simply on the fact that Ive seen so many refurbished Dells serving their new owners really well.

And HP gets a vote because even though theyre a bit on the chunky side of things, theyre still solid performers.

Experiences vary, but these are the brands Ive had the most luck with.

Should You Buy A Refurbished Laptop

A refurbished laptop can be fantastic value for your money, but you need to look out for a few key things to make sure you dont get ripped off. For instance, its vital that the refurbished laptop deals you check out are all factory refurbished, meaning the actual manufacturer repaired them. Youll also want to make sure that the refurbished laptop has at least a 12-month warranty and that the refurbished laptop sales are from a reliable and reputable retailer.

If you stick to these things, then you should be safe. By following such ideals, youll ensure your refurbished laptop has been repaired by a company employee using factory parts, and the warranty means that if the same issue pops up, you can have it repaired for free.

If you come across something that hasnt been reconditioned in the same factory in which it was made but is still listed as certified refurbished, its still good to go. That tends to mean that its been as good as factory repaired by a professional who knows what theyre doing.

Its sensible to stick to trusted retailers with a warranty and some form of guarantee as it avoids any chance of you accidentally buying stolen stock.

As always, remember to use common sense. If the refurbished laptop deals youre checking out look too good to be true, they probably are. Make sure you buy from a reputable seller so you wont be disappointed by your purchase.

Never Pay Sight Unseen

We Bought a $700 Gaming Laptop From Dell…

If a seller is insistent that you send money via check, money order, or services like Venmo and PayPal before you ever lay eyes on the laptop, that’s a huge red flag. A reputable seller should have no issue with you asking to send payment after the item arrives or after you’ve confirmed yourself that the laptop boots up properly during a meet-up sale. Sending payment after an item arrives in the mail or you can actually see it for yourself will save you a lot of heartache as well as cash unlike typical online shopping, it’s a lot more difficult to get your money back from a bad Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist sale since it isn’t a business transaction.

All defective and damaged parts are replaced. Then the battery, power supply, display, connections, and all the features undergo comprehensive testing. Refurbishers will fix all cosmetic issues and reformat the laptop to factory settings.

A refurbished laptop will most likely be updated with the latest OS.

Finally, the refurbished laptop is repackaged and relabeled as refurbished or reconditioned.

Used Is Not Refurbished

The terms used and refurbished can not really be used interchangeably. Refurbished laptops generally come from companies like Dell, as we covered above, and are restored by professionals to as good condition as possible. Steps may include taking units apart to check various components, including the battery, internal storage, power supply, ports, and other parts.

You’ll generally need to go through manufacturers and select retailers for trustworthy refurbished laptops.

Laptops that are classified as “used” are sold by consumers after they’ve upgraded to a better model, decided the laptop wasn’t quite what they need, or they simply need to raise some funds. Used laptops aren’t checked in-depth, and as such, there could potentially be an issue with a component. Platforms like eBay and Craigslist also do not check products prior to listing.

Retailers like offer the best of both worlds. Sellers can list a used laptop, but it’s also possible to locate certified refurbished laptops that come with a limited warranty. It’s recommended you spend significant time doing research. Here are some handy tips to buying a refurbished or used laptop:

  • Check the laptop right away for any defects that weren’t listed by the seller. This includes opening up the devices to have a quick peek inside.
  • Check for any warranties.
  • Read the fine print to see what’s covered by the warranty.
  • Consider using a credit card to pay for used laptops.
  • Check return policies.

Both are dual-core processors with hyper-threading. And have a base clock of 28 hundred megahertz in laymans terms. Those CPUs in a laptop from 2011 would have been decent.

By simply providing your postcode, you can find your nearest certified reseller here.

As well as physical resale stores, there are also an abundance of online third-party sites offering huge bargains on Refurbished Apple Macs. Online retailers KRCS offer the complete range of Apple Mac computers, including built-to-order options with free delivery on all orders over $200.

MacConnection is another online authorized Mac reseller, offering an extensive selection of refurbished Mac products from 15-inch MacBook Pros to 13-inch MacBook Airs. They offer some amazing deals, such as the $1,299 price for a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, $200 cheaper than price for the same product on the Apple Refurbished Store.

However, the downside of opting to buy from a retailer other than Apple is that the products dont come with the same assurance. Because the Macs havent undergone Apples rigorous pre-marketing testing procedures, post-purchase issues and defects are more likely to occur, causing aggravation that you could do without. In addition, they wont come with the same warranty that Apple permits and wont be eligible to receive 1 year of free support from Apple.
