If you’re not too interested in the latest and greatest phone, there is one smartphone manufacturer that may appeal to you. American tech company, Librem produces its privacy-focused Linux smartphone, Librem 5, in the USA. It states that ‘all the electronics will be made in our USA facility, and the entire phone will be assembled in the US’ making it the only American phone manufacturer out there right now.

In part, this is likely to be because it’s a smartphone that promises to not track or mine your personal data for sale or for advertising purposes in any way. Being manufactured ‘locally’ means that consumer confidence can be high with such features. The Librem 5 also has hardware kill switches so you can shut down WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular signal, as well as your microphone or camera, in a permanent manner. It’s a specialized smartphone that won’t suit everyone but if you’re desperate to have a phone that was entirely made in the USA, this is the only option right now. Just don’t expect style or the latest features.

In the past, Motorola was one of the few companies that still made cell phones in the USA with the Moto X developed in the country. Over the past few decades, manufacturers have been swept by the “just-in-time” inventory philosophy, in which manufacturers hold very little excess parts inventory. It assumes suppliers will always be able to deliver parts on demand. That doesn’t work in a world of frequent, unpredictable supply chain interruptions, and it looks like sporadic chip plant shutdowns will continue. Samsung lost $270 million because it shut down a Texas factory for a month because of a winter storm. Similarly, a recent COVID surge in Malaysia may extend the shortage by shutting down plants there.

Politicians can tell you why we should build things in America: national security and jobs. But the companies we spoke to had other reasons for sticking around in the US.

One, of course, is sheer pride and community feeling. U-Turn Audio’s Ben Carter “always wanted to build a company here in Massachusetts and employ people from our community,” he said, and Carter now has 21 people building turntables in Woburn.

In effect, that’s what HP said today. “Lots of noise…about Apple moving Mac production back to the U.S…. wanted to offer HP’s story,” said an HP representative via e-mail Friday.

“HP PCs have been assembled in the U.S. since the beginning,” the post begins. “HP workstations and commercial desktop PCs are manufactured in Indianapolis, and HP servers are manufactured in Houston. These manufacturing facilities employ hundreds of people and produce billions of dollars’ worth of products,” the post said.
