Acer Nitro 5 Best Value
- Competitive performance for the price
- Roomy 1TB SSD with room to add second drive
If youre looking to score some mid-range components at a reasonable price, the Acer Nitro 5 is worth considering. Our pricier $1,700 test configuration includes a Ryzen 7 5800H processor and RTX 3070 graphics, but you can find models with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 and a blazing-fast 144Hz display for as little as $800. There are a couple of shortcomings, though. The laptop itself is heavy and the display lid is a bit flimsy. Thats not too surprising, as budget gaming laptops tend to be beastly in size and made of plastic materials. If you can live with those tradeoffs, then the Nitro 5 is a good option for most folks.
Best Laptops Under $1000 Canada
Hunting for a new, durable, and up-to-date laptop that is a price-performance monster? Here are the best laptops under 1,000 CAD for you!
A thousand dollars is always the optimal price for a new laptop regardless of time. Back in the 1990s, when my father brought a computer to our home, it worked much better than others of that era. It was, of course, paltry if you compare it to the laptops of our day. Yet, my dad paid 1,000 dollars for that laptop. It had 32 megabytes of RAM, 128 GB of HDD capacity. The price of a computer that is suitable for an average computer user never changed ever since.
So, that is why we are listing the laptops that are worth 1,000 CAD or below. There are overachieving laptops on our list, as well as low-budget gaming systems. If you are about to buy a new laptop, you might like our quick guide to buying a new notebook too.
Before the guide, we would like to introduce you to our list first. As of 2020, we claim you cannot find a better one than these!
What Other Components Should I Look For In A Cheap Gaming Laptop
With the CPU, memory and storage, your choices are a little more flexible for a budget gaming laptop, especially the latter two. Because many games such as first-person shooters rely more on the graphics chip than the CPU, you don’t necessarily need the fastest available. Going with a more midrange CPU like an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 is a safe bet.
Also, gaming laptops, especially cheaper ones, let you easily expand or upgrade your memory and storage. If you’re going to skimp, this is the best place to do it with the expectation you’ll upgrade eventually and put your cash into the GPU and CPU instead.
Beyond the graphics chip, look for:
- A 10th-, 11th- or 12th-gen Intel Core i5 or i7, or AMD Ryzen 4000 or 5000 series processor.
- At least 8GB of memory and the capability to add more post-purchase.
- At least a 512GB solid-state drive or a combo of 256GB SSD storage and a larger hard drive.

How To Buy A Great Budget Gaming Laptop For Less Than $1000
It’s not as easy as adding it to your cart.
Lots of people want to play games on the go, but many of them don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on the most premium gaming laptops around. Some of the best gaming laptops are very expensive. But what if you only have $1,000 or less to spend?Recently, I’ve been researching the sub-$1,000 budget gaming laptop space, and was surprised to find it a confusing wasteland that can, if you’re not careful, leave you with old or outdated tech in the guise of a deal. On the other hand, there are a few slightly older machines that can be had for a bargain with some bumped up specs.Don’t know where to start looking for a gaming laptop that costs less than $1,000? Here are my tips:
Rtx 2060 And Gtx 1660 Ti Options
In our tests, the WASD keys on the Lenovo Legion 5i with a GTX 1660 Ti graphics processor ran at least 10 degrees warmer than those on the Asus TUF Gaming A15 and the HP Omen 15, and its not possible to max the fans using Lenovos included software. In addition, the model we tested, which has a six-core Core i7 processor and 8 GB of RAM, posted weaker performance in our tests compared with our top picks, which have eight-core Ryzen 7 processors and 16 GB of memory.
The Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 has RTX 2060 Max-Q graphics and performed similarly to our top picks in testing. But its surface temperatures were uncomfortably warm and its fans sounded sickly, and although maxing the fan speeds in Asuss software is possible, its unintuitive.
The successor to our previous pick, the Acer Predator Helios 300 posted by far the best performance for the price of all the models we tested this year. But like the Lenovo Legion 5i, its WASD keys also ran about 10 degrees hotter than those of our top picks, and its keyboard has a flaw that we considered to be a dealbreaker: Unless you press firmly in the middle of each key, it may not register the keystroke. We had issues typing and gaming on two different units, and we found numerous reports of the same problem in owner reviews.
The Dell G5 15 and the MSI GF65 Thin ran too hot in all our tests, even with their fans maxed.

When To Get Something Old
There are a few times to consider getting a cheap gaming laptop with a last-gen CPU, though you should get the most recent GPU you can afford. . Recently, I found a few deals that I would recommend to people despite the fact that they had last year’s chips. The laptops with 11th Gen Intel processors are often starting at lower prices from manufacturers . But shop around. For instance, I saw a Dell G5 15 with a 12th Gen Intel Core i5, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050, 8GB of RAM and 256GB for for $899. I later saw a version for a similar price with an 11th Gen processor, the same GPU, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage .That’s a point where I would say to go for something older. The 16GB of RAM will keep your system relevant longer, and 512GB of storage can hold way more games . That’s a quality of life difference that I think makes up for one year of processor generation gains.
But be reasonable. There are laptops that are still on the market with Intel’s 10th Gen CPUs . Vendors, especially third party sellers on Amazon and Newegg might drop to around $600 for those, and I could understand why a buyer might consider them. After all, a few hundred bucks is a lot. But if you buy something that old, you may be replacing your laptop sooner, and spending more money in the long run.

How We Test Gaming Laptops
When we bring a laptop into our laboratory, our goal is to see how it would work if you brought it into your home or office. While we use a number of industry standard benchmarks such as Geekbench and 3DMark, we focus heavily on real-world tests that we have developed in-house. But in the case of gaming laptops, we also make sure to run a number of synthetic gaming benchmarks, using our chosen titles integrated tests. We also game for several hours to established real-world results.
To test endurance, the Laptop Mag Battery test surfs the web at 150 nits of brightness until the system runs out of juice. To judge pure processing power, we use a giant spreadsheet macro that matches 65,000 names with their addresses, a video transcoder that converts a 4K video to 1080p and the Geekbench 4 synthetic test. We measure graphics prowess with both 3DMark Ice Storm / Fire Strike and a series of actual game titles.
We use a colorimeter to measure screen brightness and color gamut while other instruments help us determine a laptop’s key travel and ambient heat. See this page on How We Test Laptops for more details on our benchmarking procedures.
The Best Laptops Under $1000 You Can Buy Today
HP addressed almost every shortcoming of the previous Envy 13, a laptop that already had very few faults. The latest model introduces a Thunderbolt 4 port and slims down the display bezels, resulting in a modern, compact design. Everything else about the Envy 13 is either better or as good as it was before. The 1080p display is bright and vivid, the keyboard is a joy to type on, and you still get a Thunderbolt 4 input along with two USB Type-A ports for connecting mice, keyboards or webcams. Bringing an 11th Gen Intel CPU onboard has improved a winning formula. Our Core i5 model impressed in real-world and benchmark tests, and the Envy 13 lasted for almost 11 hours on a charge. The Envy 13 gets you a nearly flagship-level laptop at a not-so-flagship price.
The HP Envy x360 13 is the best 2-in-1 laptop for the money. While it doesn’t come with a stylus , the Envy is a 2-in-1 so you can flip it into tent or tablet mode. What makes this such a fantastic value is its entirely aluminum design and Herculian AMD Ryzen processors.
In our testing, we found that an Envy x360 13 with a Ryzen 5 4500U CPU can outperform laptops with 10th Gen Intel chips. This specific Envy costs just $800 and can outmuscle laptops that cost well over $1,000, including the exorbitant MacBook Pro. Moreover, the Envy x360 13 has a bright, vivid 13.3-inch display and a comfortable keyboard.
Still, the Acer Swift 3 will give you a lot of bang for your buck. We highly recommend it.

Acer Aspire 7 Gaming Laptop
Its easy to love a gaming laptop this good
CPU: Intel Core i7-8750H | Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti | RAM: 8GB | Screen: 15.6 FHD | Storage: 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD
It may not be having the signature gaming design, trading the usual black and red aesthetic for one that makes it feel like an office machine, but some will still find the Acer Aspire 7 satisfying. Yes, it is one of the best entry-level gaming laptops when it comes to gaming in 1080p.
In fact, youll be able to crank the settings all the way up in Overwatch without ever dipping below playable fps. It does offer better battery life when compared to other gaming laptops in this category, but its better to have your charger on hand at all times.
How Much Ram Do I Need
The sweet spot for memory for any laptop, really, not just budget machines is 8GB. We answer the question of “how much RAM do I need” in more detail in our buyer’s guide, but whether you’re running Windows, MacOS, or even the more lightweight Chrome OS, 8GB will provide you with plenty of headroom for multitasking and more complex applications. If you want to do some gaming or video editing in your off-hours, though, 16GB wouldn’t hurt.

The Asus Zenbook 13 May Not Be The Most Powerful Gaming Laptop Out There But If You’re Looking For A 13
Perhaps you need something a little more portable, in which case it’s worth looking into a 13-inch laptop. There aren’t a ton of 13-inch gaming laptops, but there are some even if they’re a little less powerful than their larger siblings. The Asus ZenBook 13 is perhaps the best laptop for those who want a more portable gaming laptop.
The ZenBook 13 is a powerful computer, but not quite as powerful as some of the others on this list. It has an 8th-gen Intel Core i5 processor, along with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage though that storage can be upgraded to 521GB.
It also has an Nvidia GeForce MX150 graphics card, which should be able to handle most basic gaming. It won’t be able to do the heavy lifting for more intense games, but for on-the-go gaming, it’s capable enough. Port-wise, the laptop has an HDMI port, USB-C port, MicroSD card reader, two USB ports, and a headphone/microphone combo jack.
The laptop is a nice one, but it’s not perfect. The keyboard isn’t the best out there, and the USB-C port isn’t Thunderbolt 3. As mentioned, it’s also not the most powerful. If you’re a hardcore gamer you might need to stick with something a little larger.
Pros: Nice design, powerful specs for its size, plenty of ports
Cons: Could use Thunderbolt 3, the keyboard isn’t the best out there.

How Good Is A $1000 Gaming Laptop
A gaming laptop for 1000 USD can be described as mid-range. For this price you will be able to play the latest games, but only on low-medium graphical settings if they are demanding. For older, less demanding titles you will be able to turn the settings up higher. Otherwise you will have to spend more money on a gaming laptop or consider buying a desktop PC for the same price.

Are Budget Gaming Laptops Worth It
You can find a good cheap gaming laptop, but they certainly have performance limitations compared to more expensive laptops. The components necessary for an enjoyable PC gaming experience are expensive, which means even entry-level gaming laptops are still typically between $700 to $1,000. Also, because these models use lower-end components, the gaming performance they’ll have on today’s demanding AAA games might not hold up for future titles.
Cheap gaming laptops are worth considering if you typically play older games or games that aren’t graphically demanding or you’re OK playing at reduced graphics quality to maintain fast frame rates. They’re also a suitable option if you’re looking for a laptop for work or school, but with enough graphics power for casual gaming during your downtime.
