Your Cad Workstation Computer: Design And Engineering Requirements
I have researched workstations and gaming computers to bring you this short list of computers which I consider to be the best computers for CAD design and engineering work. The key CAD workstation computer specifications to make a list were:
- Minimum 16GB of RAM, preferably 32GB as standard or supplier-provided upgrade.
- At least a 9th generation Intel Core i7 or 3rd generation AMD Ryzen processor.
- NVIDIA GTX 1660, or NVIDIA RTX 2060 or better, or Quadro equivalent for graphics cards.
- PCIe NVMe SSD storage.
Nice to haves include a case with multiple USB 3.0 connectors as well as audio connectors on the front panel and lots of USB ports on the back. Engineers, especially electronics engineers, tend to have a whole lot of USB devices plugged into their computers at once! I have every port on my computer full, plus 8 ports of USB hub maxed out if Im debugging hardware.
I also ruled out options that were significantly higher priced than competing brands which offered the same or better specifications so you can see the best value. Some brands have some incredibly stylish designs for their cases without much of interest inside. When comparing options for pre-built computers it’s best to ignore the marketing literature and jump straight to the specifications list so you can directly compare options based on their performance and value, and only once you have done so look at the aesthetics of the case.

Hardware Requirements For Autocad
-Processor
When it comes to computer processors, or CPUs, two key specifications define their capability. Clock speed refers to the number of calculations the processor can run per second, while the number of cores indicates how many physical cores there are in the processor. The number of cores is a measure of how many operations the processor can run at the same time.
Whether its better to have a higher clock speed or multiple cores depends on the type of software youll be running. AutoCAD is predominantly a single-core application, meaning it would be better for the processor to have a higher clock speed as opposed to multiple cores. According to AutoDesk, the maker of AutoCAD, the program supports multi-core technology only when it comes to 2D regeneration. Outside of that task, there is no performance advantage to be gained from multiple cores.
For basic tasks, the minimum processor speed AutoDesk says it takes to run AutoCAD is 2.52.9 GHz. A processor with a clock speed of 3+ GHz is recommended.
-RAM
Despite the complexity of AutoCAD, the program isnt a memory hog. In fact, AutoDesk says the program will run basic tasks on a computer with just 8 GB of RAM, although the company recommends 16 GB.
-Hard Drives
SSDs contain no moving parts, and as such, theyre faster, more reliable, and less susceptible to damage than their HDD counterparts. Most newer laptops come with SSD as standard.
-GPUs-Monitors

Choosing The Best Laptop For Autocad
One of the most significant changes occurring in the architectural and engineering fields over the past 50 years was undoubtedly the introduction of the computer-aided drafting program AutoCAD. Best Ram For Cad Software
CAD Workloads are very similar to working in 3D Applications like Cinema 4D or Maya.
The amount of RAM needed depends very much on how complex your projects and assemblies are and how many projects you have opened at the same time.
Also, if you tend to have more RAM-hungry Applications in addition to your CAD Software open at the same time, you should make sure you have sufficient RAM.
Running Windows 10, for example, and having Chrome, an E-Mail Program, some other DCC Software like Photoshop and Illustrator, and a Word-Processing App open at the same time in addition to your CAD Software will surely eat away at your RAM much more than when you have only one App open at a time.
It is ease of use that we are looking for, and closing down other Applications just so we can use our CAD Software is not very efficient.
For lighter CAD work you should be looking to buy at least 16GB of RAM.
With more complex assemblies or when you are using multiple Apps at the same time, you should be leaning towards 32GB or even 64GB of RAM.
Image-Source: G.Skill
For Mainstream or HEDT CPUs such as the Intel i7, i9, or Ryzen / Threadripper CPUs, I recommend the Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAMthat comes in all sorts of Memory capacities.
Memory Clock Speed can influence your CPUs performance and it is advised to aim for RAM clocked at 3200Mhz or higher.
How Much Ram Does Autocad Need

4 GB is recommended, but if you go for higher RAM, it will be better. It will help with a lot of CAD-related activities.

How To Choose Laptop For Autocad
Hardware is the most important thing to consider when choosing an AutoCAD laptop. Learn about the recommended configuration of software that you will be using.
If you are hesitant about the programs you will install on the laptop, which is often the case, when you are just starting your career, dont get discouraged. All laptops presented on this list can easily cope with your CAD tasks. However, if you feel like going to a nearby store to buy a laptop, remember to consider the parameters stated below.
Processor. For working with AutoCAD and similar software, you need the fastest and latest processor. Nowadays, this is the 10th Gen Intel Core i7 processor. However, the 9th Gen i7 processor will also do if you can’t spend more money on a laptop with the 10th Gen processor.
RAM. If you are planning to switch between tasks, for example, to work with 3Ds Max, AutoCAD, and other software simultaneously, I recommend selecting a laptop with 16GB of RAM.
Graphics Card. You need a minimum of 2GB of the dedicated graphics card, while 4GB is even a better option. Thus, a laptop will easily cope with 3D files rendering without constant freezes.
Storage Space. You should also take into consideration storage space because your projects are saved on a laptop and you wont be able to transfer your files from a laptop to external hard drive all the time. Select the storage space that matches your needs and budget.
