What Is Considered A Good Amount Of Ram
Generally speaking, the more RAM your machine has the better off you are. You cant have too much RAM. However, not everyone needs the most RAM possible.
RAM typically comes in variables of four. On the lowest end, you can get 4 to 8 gigs of RAM, and on the highest end, you can get anywhere from 12 to 32 gigs of RAM, and even 128 gigs of RAM on certain super-powered computers. However, the majority of people dont need 128 gigs of RAM, or even 32.
If youre using your computer for simple work or school projects, 8 gigs is often enough. If you want to do some serious gaming, you might want 12 gigs or higher, but 8 will still suffice most of the time. For more intensive projects including video editing, Photoshop, and intensive programs, between 12 and 32 gigs of RAM is best.
Always check the RAM requirements of programs you plan on using before buying a computer. This will help you determine how much RAM youll need.
How To Find Ram On Windows 10 Via Control Panel
You can also check RAM Windows 10 through Control Panel. For that:
Step 1: Open Control Panel from the Run utility.
Step 2: Navigate to System tab and you will get the following window. You can see the amount of installed RAM on your computer under the View basic information about your computer section.
How To Upgrade Desktop Memory
Replacing the memory in your desktop is usually pretty straightforward. Youll need a Philips-head screwdriver to open the case, and thats about it. Note that these instructions are for a standard ATX tower-style caseif you have a more exotic case design, you may need to work a little harder or position the computer oddly to open it and access its internal components.
Remove all the cables and external accessories from your computer, then move it to a table or desk. Ideally you want a cool, dry work area that isnt carpeted. If your home is particularly susceptible to static shocks, you might want an anti-static bracelet as well.
Remove the screws on the back holding the access panel in place. Youre going to remove the access panel from the left side of the PC . On some cases, youll need to remove the whole cover. Then set the case on its side with the internals exposed.
At this point you should be looking down at the motherboard. The RAM should be easy to spot. It will be two or more modules sticking up from slots that are usually near the CPU, but more toward the front of the computer.
To remove the existing RAM, look for the plastic tabs at either end of the RAM slots. Simply press these tabs down until they click. The module should pop up slightly, and its ready to be pulled out. Repeat this step with all the modules you want to remove.
Then, just lift each module straight up and out of the slot.

What Laptop Components Can You Upgrade
In the best-case scenario, you can replace both your RAM and storage drive. Upgrading from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD will have an enormous impact on your performance, allowing you to boot, open applications and files, or switch tasks three to four times faster. Adding more memory, particularly going from 2GB or 4GB to 8GB, can make multitasking or working on large media files easier.
Forget about swapping out the CPU, the graphics chip or display. And while it may be possible to replace the Wi-Fi card on some systems, doing so is difficult and probably not worth the effort. If you really want better wireless connectivity, consider a USB Wi-Fi dongle.

Speed Up Your Computer By Adding More Ram

If youre thinking about spending a few bucks to upgrade your PC youre probably wondering what to upgrade in order to get the most bang for the buck.
In most cases, except for adding a solid state drive, adding more RAM will do more to speed up your computer than any other upgrade you can make.
Why? Because Microsoft Windows and many of the most popular applications that run on it are resource hogs.
If you run two or three apps simultaneously they must dance around one another as Windows constantly swaps part of their code and data between RAM and the hard drive, often bogging the computer down to a snails pace.
Adding more RAM could result in less swapping, and therefore faster system performance.
Luckily for us, adding RAM is usually one of the fastest and easiest DIY upgrades one can make. Its so easy in fact that virtually anyone can do it on virtually and desktop PC and many laptops.
That being said, here are a few things to consider before buying more RAM for your PC:
1 Make sure you buy the correct kind of memory sticks. Most newer computers use either DDR4 or DDR3 RAM modules.
If your system is old enough to use either DDR2 or even plain DDR RAM it probably wouldnt make sense to pay for an upgrade. The money you would spend for a RAM upgrade would likely be better spent if you applied it towards the purchase of a new computer.

Here’s an overview of physical memory limits for 64-bit Windows versions:
- Windows 10 Pro and Education: 2TB
- Windows Pro for Workstations and Enterprise: 6TB
- Windows 8 Professional and Enterprise: 512GB

Stop Programs From Auto
Programs like Skype, your favorite torrent client, and Spotify set themselves to launch when the PC does.
This can eat up a lot of RAM straight from launch. Whats worse, you might not even need to use these programs at the moment they just start without asking! The best strategy is to determine which programs you dont want to launch and disable them from launching on startup.
You can disable any program from auto-launching through its settings. If you cant figure out how to disable a certain programs auto-launch, a simple Google search has the answers. This can save you a lot of RAM.

How Can You Fix Bios Settings In Case You Have A Ram Mismatch
If you have two laptop RAM modules with mismatched frequency, latency, or voltage, your BIOS will harmonize the settings and default to the lower value. That’s if it recognizes both modules or boots at all. To prevent a loss in performance, you can overclock your RAM. Do this at your own risk!
Before you add the new RAM, boot into your BIOS and check whether you can adjust RAM latency, frequency, or voltage. If that is not possible, find out whether you can upgrade your BIOS.
If you can change your RAM settings, set the higher values of the two modules. Again, you are overclocking the RAM at your own risk! Particularly increasing the voltage can damage the hardware. Save and exit the BIOS and proceed as described below.

Consult With Crucial Or Kingston
The most convenient way to look into your laptop and determine what will fit, is to use Crucial’s Memory Advisory or System Scanner Tool. For the first you need to enter laptop manufacturer and model, while the former is an executable that scans your system and automatically determines matching hardware. Both tools are available from the Crucial homepage.
Kingston offers a similar service for searching the right type of memory. You can search by system/device, memory part number, or memory type. Both Crucial and Kingston found our first laptop. Unfortunately, one had non-removable memory.
We tried a much older laptop and only Kingston came back with data. Under Compatible Memory Upgrades, it informed us, that our Acer Aspire 5251 laptop is limited to a total of 8GB DDR3 1066 or 1333 MHz Non-ECC Unbuffered SODIMM RAM, spread across two sockets.
If you are unsure about your laptop model, we recommend running Crucial’s system scanner. It will show you what type of memory stick you are using right now and recommend a new module based on that. An old Sony laptop we had on hand, for example, had one 4GB memory stick, thus one of the two slots was available.

RAM is the memory that your computer uses to store data that is currently in use. Generally speaking, having more RAM can allow your computer to perform more tasks at once, though this is also dependent on a variety of other factors. Upgrading or replacing your RAM is one of the easiest upgrades you can make on a desktop or laptop computer, once you know what RAM to get.
How Can You Add New Ram Modules
Important: Before you lay hands on your laptop, be sure to unplug it, power it down, remove the battery , and ground yourself.
Most RAM modules are super easy to exchange. You might find a RAM access hatch on the back of your laptop. Otherwise, check whether you can remove the back cover or keyboard to expose the RAM. If you can’t spot the RAM sticks anywhere, consult the manual or the manufacturer website.
We have previously demonstrated how to salvage hardware from an old HP Compaq nw8440 and showed you where the RAM modules sit and how to release them.
Today, we will demonstrate how to do the same with an Acer Aspire laptop. If you have a different laptop model, we recommend visiting the manufacturer’s website to find a manual or instructions for your device.

Update Your Software And Operating System
Update your software and OS. If there’s a new version of your operating system or a program you frequently use, it’s probably better optimized for your computer. Having the latest versions of software can prevent memory leaks and other bugs that affect performance. Be sure to keep Windows up-to-date and update your Mac regularly.
How Much Ram For Laptops
Most laptops come with 8GB of RAM, with top-tier machines packing 16GB even up to 32GB for the most powerful gaming notebooks. As previously mentioned, tablet and laptop needs are converging, but most users feel comfortable running more complex programs on laptops, which means RAM has a more important role here.
For something like a Chromebook, which mostly relies on cloud-based apps and provides very little storage space, you wont need much in the way of RAM and will be fine for 8GB of RAM when buying a Chromebook, especially since you can now use the to download Android apps directly on your machine.
For Windows and MacOS, however, you should treat 8GB as a starting point and think about bumping that number up to 16GB. Most of the best laptops come with 16GB for good reason. Windows 10, for example, consumes around 2GB of RAM before you even open an application. If you are doing a lot of graphic design work or are planning on dabbling in some higher-end gaming, you may want to consider increasing that to 16GB.
Youd only need to go past that if you perform certain tasks, like editing huge video or photo files the kind of thing youd normally do on a desktop. Most people dont use a laptop for such tasks, but if you do, buying enough RAM is crucial. Its more difficult to upgrade RAM in a laptop compared to a desktop, so buying what you need at the start is paramount.
