How Much Ram Can Your Pc Accommodate
You cant just add more RAM to your computer without confirming a few things in advance. Every PC has two limits on its maximum RAM: its motherboard and its operating system . Whichever limit is lower is the maximum RAM for your PC.
Finding your motherboards maximum RAM
Your motherboard has a maximum amount of RAM that it can handle and a fixed quantity of RAM slots the physical spaces where the RAM modules are located. Keep these factors in mind when assessing how to select RAM for your motherboard.
See the four slots in the top-left corner of this motherboard? Thats where your RAM goes. On this specific motherboard, there are four slots available, which is common today.
First, identify the type of motherboard you have. To avoid taking things apart, you can use a third-party tool like Speccy by CCleaner, which will display all your computers core information without you having to dig around for it. Identify your motherboard manufacturer and model, then look up its maximum RAM capacity online or in your ownership manual.
RAM modules come in a range of capacities, so even if you have only a few RAM slots, you can meet your motherboards RAM maximum by purchasing higher-capacity RAM modules. For example, if your motherboard has four RAM slots and maxes out at 32 GB of RAM, you can install four 8 GB RAM modules.

What Does Ram Do
Your computer uses memory to launch programs, processes, load features, and more.
Your hard drive and RAM capacities are both measured in gigabytes but are very different in function. Your hard drive is your computer long-term memory or storage memory, where all your files and programs are stored when they are not in use. Your RAM memory is functional memory that is used temporarily and all the data stored there will be erased when you turn off your computer.Your computers RAM works much faster than hard drives. RAM temporarily stores commonly-used data that your programs, apps, or processes need allowing a more efficient, faster transfer to the central processing unit .

Welcome to ExtremeTechs comprehensive RAM guide, in which well answer a broad range of questions related to how much system RAM you need these days, whether or not its worth it to upgrade older systems, and whether DDR3 or DDR4 is a better investment option.
Its interesting to look back and see how much things have changed over the past twenty years. People have been writing RAM guides for decades, but back when I was learning about computing, much more emphasis was paid to the specific technical implementation of any given RAM standard. Fast Page Mode RAM, EDO RAM, SDRAM, DDR, and RDRAM are just a few of the standards that existed elbow-to-elbow, and which type of memory your system used often determined if it was worth upgrading.
Nowadays, things are simpler. While a few of you may still have DDR2-based equipment from 2005 to 2009, the majority of systems today are likely using DDR3. Thats the memory standard well focus on if you have DDR2-related questions youre welcome to drop them in the comments.

Can I Add More Ram To My Laptop
If your laptop has 8GB of RAM, it probably uses two 4GB strips of RAM in separate slots. Because of the way memory fits into your laptop or computer, its actually quite easy to remove and expand. One of the most common ways to upgrade your RAM is to replace your 4GB strips with 8GB strips, giving you a total 16GB.
Can I add 8GB RAM to 4GB laptop?
You can use 8GB RAM and 4GB RAM together, but doing so can affect performance. Although youll have a total of 12GB RAM, it will be slower than using two memory sticks of the same size. When using 8GB and 4GB RAM together, they should have the same voltage rating.

Installing Ram In A Laptop
Your washing machine will never run out of RAM, although it will not work more than Enough if the installed RAM needs to be increased. Below are the steps we can take to remove your obsolete RAM modules and replace them with new ones. Make sure you have the correct model of RAM modules before attempting to upgrade memory on one machine.
How Much Ram Do You Have Now
Its easy enough to pop open your Settings app, head to the About This PC section, and see how much RAM you have.
That only tells part of the story, though. That 32 GB listed in the screenshot above might be four modules of 8 GB each, or it might be two modules of 16 GB each. That matters when youre upgrading because memory is typically installed in pairs, and different systems can have different numbers of slots available.
For example, lets assume we wanted to upgrade that system to even more RAM. We now need to know some additional information. How many total memory slots does the PC have? How many RAM modules are installed? Are there free slots?
For that, you could open up your case and count the number of modules and slots inside, or you could turn to another tool. There are several hardware information tools out there, but our favorite is the free version Speccy .
After installing and running Speccy, we just switch to the RAM category on the left, and the right panel shows us gives us the info we need.
Unfortunately, we can now see that we have four total slots available and that all four are taken up with memory modules. Since we have 32 GB total RAM, we can assume that we have four 8 GB modules in place. This means that to get more RAM in the machine, we need to replace some or all of whats there.

How Much Ram Do I Need
The easy answer would be to say the more the better. We prefer to advise you to reflect on how you use your laptop. Simply, the more RAM you have, the faster your programs will run, and the more programs you can run at the same time. You may not need 32 GB of RAM for your everyday use. 8 GB might be just fine or clearly not enough.Below we have tried to describe how much RAM you will need based on your usage.
2 GB of RAM bare minimum
The very minimum you need to use for basic programs like your e-mail application or web browser. If you are purchasing a device , we recommend that you get a device with more.
4 GB of RAM suitable for office and school work
This is the minimum amount of RAM that will allow you to open multiple programs or pages comfortably. This memory is enough for standard office/school work, multimedia viewing, and very light game play. Creatives and Gamers should have more RAM. If you purchased your laptop recently, it should have at least 4 GB of RAM.
8 GB of RAM the new standard
Most computers today are sold with 8 GB of RAM. This is enough memory to run most productivity programs and photo /video editing programs, stream content, and play most games. Multi-tasking is comfortably fluid with this amount of RAM. You should be aware that many quality games will need all the 8 GB to run properly which means you will not be able to run a program in the background.

Take Note Of You Ram’s Specs
The wrong type of RAM won’t fit into your laptop. For best results, be sure to match the clock rate of your RAM sticks. In other words, when you buy an additional RAM stick, make sure its MHz count is identical to the one/s you already have.
Also keep in mind that laptop RAM modules are significantly smaller than those for desktop computer, hence they are called SO-DIMM for small outline dual in-line memory module. Don’t accidentally buy the wrong type of DIMM.
Here is a summary of what you need to know:
- Type of RAM, i.e. DDR, DDR2, or DDR3
- Amount of MHz supported by your laptop
- Physical size
Obviously, both Crucial and Kingston offer these free tools because they want to sell you their respective RAM modules. And both manufacturers offer good deals and high-quality hardware. However, with the information gathered from their tools, you can safely shop at eBay or Amazon or your local electronics store.

How To Choose The Correct Ram Upgrade
Think of Random Access Memory , sometimes referred to simply as memory, as the short-term memory of your computer. RAM data can be recalled without having to access the hard drive, which is why having the right amount of memory in your computer directly correlates with performance. Without diving too deeply into the electrical science behind computer memory, understand that RAM lets your computer run faster and more smoothlyespecially when multi-taskingif you are someone who likes to have several programs open at once.
Why Might You Consider A Ram Upgrade
Certain applications lean heavily on system RAM. Chrome web browser is notoriously RAM hungry as it treats each open tab as an individual process with its own memory allocation. Sandboxing as this is called, is advantageous in that if one tab crashes it doesnt take down the whole browser. The tradeoff is that it is RAM-intensive.
If you regularly work with several applications or browser tabs open at once, making a RAM upgrade is a near-surefire way to improve performance. If your PC is running slower than you think it should at any given time, the Task Manager in Windows is a good way to check whether you are overtaxing your available RAM.
Open the Task Manager in Windows 10 by pressing ALT + CTL + DEL.
Task Manager showing RAM usage
A good rule of thumb is that if the Available Memory is less than 25 percent of your Total Memory, a RAM upgrade will provide a tangible performance boost for the end user.
While in Task Manager, watch RAM performance when you open a new application. If new apps open slower than you would like, and you notice that usage spikes closer to 100 percent of capacity, then a RAM upgrade probably will serve you well.

Update Your Software And Operating System
Update your software and OS. If there’s a new version of your operating system or a program you frequently use, it’s probably better optimized for your computer. Having the latest versions of software can prevent memory leaks and other bugs that affect performance. Be sure to keep Windows up-to-date and update your Mac regularly.
What About Heat Sinks And Rgb
Theyre mostly meaningless. RGB LEDs on your RAM looks neat in a desktop case with a window . And flashy heat sinks might be advantageous if youre planning to overclock your memory. If neither of these things appeal to you, dont look for those specific featurestheyll only make your memory more expensive.

How Do I Increase My Computer’s Ram
Random-access memory, or RAM, is the physical hardware responsible for handling active processes on your computer. The more RAM your machine has available, the more tasks it can perform at the same time. The most effective way to get more RAM is to upgrade the physical hardware. Still, if that’s not an option, you can increase available memory by limiting the number of applications and processes running simultaneously.
Viruses and memory leaks can cause problems with RAM, so fixing these issues will make a big difference.
Can You Upgrade Ram On A Laptop

If your Laptop has a memory slot independent of the motherboard, you can upgrade its RAM by inserting an extra memory card. However, this option is not available for all models of Laptops.
Generally, high end, ultraslim designed computers have its RAM attached directly to the motherboard. If this is the case, you cant upgrade your RAM.

Can I Add 8gb Ram To A 4gb Laptop
Some laptops come with an extra RAM slot so that you can add more memory on your own. You might be able to replace the RAM, but the maximum memory your computer can handle depends on the rest of the hardware. Use the Crucial Memory Tool to find out if your computer’s RAM is upgradable, then check the Performance tab in the Windows Task Manager to see if your current RAM is less than the maximum. Go to the Apple menu> About This Mac and select the Memory tab to see how much RAM it has on a Mac.
Apple’s notebook line of computers no longer support adding RAM after purchase. Any Mac notebook with a Retina display does not support user-replaceable RAM.
Checking Your Ram Installation
When youre finished installing the RAM, you want to make sure its working correctly. Depending on your PC, the BIOS may display the amount of memory on the initial boot up screen. If you dont see that, you can load into your PCs BIOS or just let your operating system start and then check out the amount of recognized RAM there. In Windows 10, you can just head to Settings > System > About.
If your PC is showing less RAM than it should, there are a few possible explanations.
The first is that you made a mistake during installation and one or more modules arent fully seated. To solve this, simply go back and double-check that all the modules are fully inserted into their slots.
The next possibility is that the RAM isnt compatible with your motherboard , or you installed a module that has a capacity higher than its slot allows. You need to go back to the compatibility checks and make sure youre using the correct RAM.
And finally, if all else fails, its possible that you have a bad memory module, which will need to be replaced.
