Is your computer not as young as it used to be? Does it take forever to start up, or crash whenever you try to open more than two programs at once? Before you go reaching for your checkbook to buy a new computer, consider a RAM upgrade. For under a hundred bucks, you can double or even triple the speed your computer runs at. Installing extra RAM will make your video applications and video-games run much more smoothly.
Why Shouldnt I Upgrade The Hard Drive Or Processor First
Let me emphasize this as much as possible, you can never have too much RAM installed in a system. Modern operating systems and applications perform best with an abundance of RAM installed on a machine. If you’ve heard of virtual memory or have a vague understanding of what a page file is, then you must know that the reason for their existence is because most computers never had a large amount of RAM installed and the operating system had to have some way to support its own needs for memory and the needs of any applications. Multitasking, or having more than one application open at once, complicates this further. The less RAM you have installed, the more applications you have open at once, the more your PC or Mac will have to rely on virtual memory to keep things going and the slower your computer will feel.
Virtual memory is great in that it allows us to have more than one application open at once, yet it is so terribly slow as it is nothing more than some amount of space on your hard drive, which is tremendously slower at transferring data than RAM is. Yes, upgrading your hard drive and replacing it with a larger and faster one would help this some and perhaps even quiet the thrashing as all of your applications are still using virtual memory, but it wont get rid of the reason you need to use virtual memory so often or so much.

Tips On Where To Sell Your Computer Ram
The best deals in second-hand tech go to those who know what they have and who make smart decisions about where to do business. Selling old computer tech on your own is possible, but it is a lot more difficult because you have to weed through a lot of people who dont know what they are looking at in order to find a qualified buyer. Here are some tips to help you succeed:
What Is The Difference Between Ddr3 Vs Ddr4 Ram
What you need to know: A DDR3 RAM stick wont fit into a DDR4 RAM slot. They are notinterchangeable so be sure to know which type of slots/RAM your computer holds.DDR stands for Double Data Rate. RAM speed is measured in megahertz . This measure tells you how many times your RAM can access its storage space per second. The number indicates a generation difference. The DDR4 is newer, faster, more energy efficient, and has higher capacity .Note for curious : A DDR3 RAM stick operates at 1066.6 MHz. Since two processes are running at the same time, manufacturers label the component with its total frequency . However, instead of using the unit MHz , the memory stick is listed as 2133 MT/s.

Reading The Service Manual
Knowing that your laptop is upgradeable in theory is one thing, but performing surgery on the device is another. If there’s one available, check the hardware maintenance manual to find what you need to do to access the components.
To locate the service manual, navigate to the support page for your specific laptop model on the manufacturer’s website . Look for downloadable manuals, and select the service or hardware guide, not the general instructions.
The maintenance manual should tell you how to open the laptop and replace these parts. In most cases, you can get to the laptop’s innards by removing some screws and either opening an upgrade panel or removing the entire bottom surface.
If the manual tells you that the memory or storage drive you want to remove are soldered onto the motherboard, you can’t upgrade. Also, if you have to break through anything that is held together by glue or have to remove the entire motherboard, forget about adding RAM or an SSD.
Where To Sell Your Computer Ram: Everything You Need To Know
Did you know that Nintendo got its start selling playing cards and Nokia used to sell toilet paper? The point is that technology drives change, delivering new applications every day. And taking advantage of the latest and greatest ideas that the tech world has to offer means maintaining a capable system. How do you stay on top? Upgrading your computer RAM can make a big difference!
Random access memory is the make-or-break hardware component for your entire system when it comes to computer memory. This means that it holds onto value as a resell or recycle component. Tech-savvy users may want to upgrade their computer RAM rather than investing in a new system. But this begs the question what to do with the old stuff, and how do you find out where to sell RAM?
First, lets take a look at the market of computer RAM. Older technologies quickly become obsolete, so along with your tube tvs it can be hard to find a taker for DDR or DDR2 memory. However, if you have some extra DDR3 or DDR4 RAM on hand, that might be a different story.

Why Should I Upgrade My Ram
Random access memory, or RAM, is the short-term memory portion of your computers brain. Your computer uses its RAM to temporarily house any data it needs right now, or that it will access in the immediate future. That way, it doesnt have to comb through all the information sitting on your hard drive. In other words, computers load data into their RAM for speedy access.
Thats why a PC memory upgrade is one way to boost your computers speed and performance. The more RAM your computer has, the smoother everything feels and runs. Youll experience faster startup times, more browser tabs with no interruption, higher FPS when gaming, more freedom to multitask with different apps, and an all-around snappier experience.

Intel Z490 H470 B360 H410 Chipset Motherboards
The short version: With no Gear modes to worry about on these previous-generation chipsets, theres little to stop a mildly experienced builder from simply enabling a DDR4-3600 XMP profile on an overclocking-enabled Z490 motherboard. Thats a pretty safe bet for system builders working from a retail-sold DIY motherboard. Note, however, that some OEM systems might have the overclocking chipset, but not the firmware settings to actually accomplish this.
Without overclocking, Intels 10th Generation Core i9 and i7 processors support memory up to DDR4-2933, while its Core i5 and i3 versions top out at DDR4-2666. Intel never unlocked overclocking for its B or H 400-Series chipsets.
As with the Z590, it might be necessary to increase the power threshold of lower-energy processors to prevent a power-throttling increase. Check your motherboard firmware for these settings prior to memory selection.

How Do I Know If I Need To Upgrade My Laptop Ram
First of all, you should confirm if it is really necessary to upgrade your RAM. You can open up the Task Manager on your laptop to find this out. This is a procedure standard for Windows 10, with no significant changes for previous releases.
- Within the Task Manager, select the Performance tab.
- In that tab, select Memory. This option will show you some interesting data about the performance of your RAM.
- In the left status, you will see RAM Total and RAM Used. This is expressed logically and in percentages.
- In the right quadrant youll find useful information about how many slots the laptop has and how many are used how many GBs are in use/ How many are available, among other variables.
If you are a regular user, a laptop with Windows 10 will require at least 4 GBs of RAM to perform regularly ideally, you could increase to 8 GBs. Beyond that level, an upgrade in RAM will not have a significant impact on your laptops performance unless youre an advanced gamer or programmer.
So, for example, lets say your inquiry in the Task Manager threw the following information: your laptop RAM has 8 GBs and youre using 30% of it. This is 2,4 GBs. You have 1 slot and its in use. In that case, there is no need for you to increase your current RAM memory.
If, on the other hand, the result is that you have 4 GBs of RAM of a maximum total assignable of 8 GBs, using 90% of it , it is highly recommendable then to upgrade.
Consult With Crucial Or Kingston
The most convenient way to look into your laptop and determine what will fit, is to use Crucial’s Memory Advisory or System Scanner Tool. For the first you need to enter laptop manufacturer and model, while the former is an executable that scans your system and automatically determines matching hardware. Both tools are available from the Crucial homepage.
Kingston offers a similar service for searching the right type of memory. You can search by system/device, memory part number, or memory type. Both Crucial and Kingston found our first laptop. Unfortunately, one had non-removable memory.
We tried a much older laptop and only Kingston came back with data. Under Compatible Memory Upgrades, it informed us, that our Acer Aspire 5251 laptop is limited to a total of 8GB DDR3 1066 or 1333 MHz Non-ECC Unbuffered SODIMM RAM, spread across two sockets.
If you are unsure about your laptop model, we recommend running Crucial’s system scanner. It will show you what type of memory stick you are using right now and recommend a new module based on that. An old Sony laptop we had on hand, for example, had one 4GB memory stick, thus one of the two slots was available.

How Much Ram Can Your Pc Handle
The other part of the RAM equation is knowing how much total RAM your computer can support. There are two factors here: the maximum RAM your version of Windows can handle, and the maximum that your motherboard can handle. Whatever is lower is what youre stuck with, but its typically the motherboard thats the more limiting factor.
The Windows part is easy:
- 32-bit Windows: 32-bit versions of Windows 10 can only handle up to 4 GB of RAM, no matter whether youre running the Home, Professional, or Enterprise edition. The same holds true for Windows 7.
- 64-bit Windows: 64-bit versions of Windows can handle up to 128 GB for Windows 10 Home, and up to 2 TB for Windows 10 Education, Professional, or Enterprise. On Windows 7, things are a bit different. The Home Basic edition can handle up to 8 GB, Home Premium up to 16 GB, and Professional up to 192 GB.
The second part of the equation depends entirely on the manufacturer, though most modern computers will support at least 8 GB, and more likely 16 GB or more.
Youll need to check the documentation for your motherboard or PC for the details. If youre unsure what motherboard you have, you can again turn to Speccy, where the Motherboard category shows you the information you need.
Just hit up Google with your model number and you should find what youre after.
How To Buy More Ram
RAM modules take up precious space, so laptops are typically engineered with only two RAM slots, and both are usually occupied by existing memory when you buy it. This means that a laptop that comes from the factory with 4GB of memory, likely has two 2GB memory modules installed. To upgrade to 8GB, you cant just buy 4GB of RAM. Youll need to remove the existing two 2GB modules and replace them with two 4GB modules, which forces you discard, or try to sell the now-useless 2GB modules.
Desktops often have three or more slots, of which only two are generally in use when the computer ships, making it easier and less wasteful when it comes to upgrades. This is why we generally advise that you buy a laptop that already comes with the amount of RAM you think youll need, instead of relying on the ability to upgrade at a later date.

How Much Ram Do You Need
As of this writing in 2021, 16 GB is considered the sweet spot for price-to-performance considerations in the context of mainstream work-related computing tasks. If you have several applications running simultaneously and a dozen Chrome tabs open you still should have plenty of headroom before you notice any lag in performance.
Anything more than 16 GB would make sense for workstation computers that are used for graphics rendering, scientific modeling, and CAD applications. It is not uncommon for 3D design workstations to have up to 32 GB of RAM.
How Do I Know If Ill Need More Ram In The Future
The minimum system requirements for almost every app continue to increase, but its possible to set your computer up with enough memory to avoid having to continuously upgrade when you install a new program. Maxing out your installed RAM will likely suffice until the end of your computers life, so its in your interest to be proactive about adding RAM to your computer.
Here are a few examples of when you might want to upgrade your computers memory:

Install The New Memory Module
Next, insert the new modules into your open slots at a 45-degree angle, with the gold edges facing down. Use even pressure with your fingers at the top of the modules to push them into place. When you hear a click and feel a DIMM snap into place, firmly push the module back until it is installed flat and level, with the clips holding it securely.
That’s it! Power up your laptop and head back to the System Information window or Task Manager to verify your new memory has been added. Enjoy your upgraded memory!
What Does Ram Do
Your computer uses memory to launch programs, processes, load features, and more.
Your hard drive and RAM capacities are both measured in gigabytes but are very different in function. Your hard drive is your computer long-term memory or storage memory, where all your files and programs are stored when they are not in use. Your RAM memory is functional memory that is used temporarily and all the data stored there will be erased when you turn off your computer.Your computers RAM works much faster than hard drives. RAM temporarily stores commonly-used data that your programs, apps, or processes need allowing a more efficient, faster transfer to the central processing unit .

How Much Ram For Tablets
Tablets are not expected to deal with heavy-duty software tasks, so their RAM needs tend to be pretty low similar to a lot of smartphones.
However, as multi-tab browsers and more complex software continue to make the transition, tablet needs are becoming more and more similar to laptop needs. Current spec options typically range from 2GB to 16GB of RAM, with other considerations like battery life and processor speed often being of greater consideration.
With something like the iPad Mini, which touts 3GB of RAM, its design is more focused on its vibrant display and long battery life. Meanwhile, Apples latest 12.9-inch iPad Pro has 6GB of RAM to accommodate the 2-in-1 crowd, although the new 2021 models will ship with 8GB or 16GB. Microsofts Surface Go 2 has a default 4GB with an option of 8GB because it falls somewhere between a laptop and a tablet our reviewer was not entirely won over.
Ultimately, this gives us a guideline for choosing tablet RAM:
- 4GB is OK for lightweight users.
- 8GB is a better fit in most tablet cases.
- 16GB if you plan to use a tablet as your primary PC.
Remember, tablets are generally complementary devices that reside between your smartphone and your PC. If youre leaning more toward a laptop replacement, buy a tablet configuration with the RAM youd need for any other desktop or laptop.
How To Install Laptop Ram
1. Before you do anything, make sure the laptop is completely shut down , then unplug it.
2. Next, you need to access your laptops memory bay by removing all or part of the laptops bottom. Most vendors provide disassembly instructions in a products service manual, which can usually be found on the websites support sections.
Fortunately, getting inside our Aspire E 15 is a snap: Just remove three screws on the expansion bay door. Note: Not all Aspire E 15s are designed this way. Some older models require the entire bottom cover to be removed.
3. Next, try to discharge any built-up static electricity by touching a nearby metal object, such as a file cabinet. If youre super-cautious, you could buy an antistatic wrist strap, but unless youre working on shag carpet on a low-humidity day, youll probably be okay.
4. Install the memory module. The memory module has a small notch in it that should match up with a nub in the slot . If you put the memory in backwards it simply wont fit, so dont force it.

The memory module should sit flat and will be locked in place by the metal arms on each side.
