It’s great being able to sit back on your sofa and surf the web, play PC games or stream video from apps not available on your TV. Or maybe you just want a bigger view for video chat while you’re stuck at home.
Using your TV as a monitor has downsides too. Text might be too small to see, input lag might ruin your gaming scores, and while the couch may seem comfy, it may turn into a neck ache when put into service as an office chair. And then there’s the mouse, trackpad and keyboard to worry about. But going PC-to-TV works well in many situations, and the best part is that it’s cheap depending on what gear you already have.

How To Connect A Windows Laptop With Your Tv Wirelessly
Miracast is a piece of software included in Windows 8.1 and 10 which allows your laptop screen to be displayed on a compatible TV screen. It’s a process called screen mirroring. You’ll use your laptop’s trackpad and keyboard as normal, but your TV will be the display.
For Miracast to work you’ll need a compatible TV. To check, head into the network settings on your TV and look for a screen mirroring option. If you see screen mirroring this usually means the TV supports Miracast, but it’s possible the TV uses its own proprietary screen mirroring software, in which case it will explain how this works on screen or in the manual.
Once screen mirroring is on, you can start connecting your laptop to your TV.
Wireless Windows Standard: Miracast
Intel’s WiDi wireless display technology has been discontinued, but Miracast carries on the torch, and it’s natively supported in both Windows 10 and Windows 8.1. Just click on the notification button in the system tray, expand the buttons on the menu that pops up, and click Connect. You’ll be able to mirror your screen directly to any Miracast-compatible device on your network. That includes many smart TVs and media streamers. You can also get a dedicated Miracast receiver and plug it into your TV . With your PC connected, the screen will show up on your TV through its Miracast-compatible screen streaming mode, or Miracast receiver.
It’s a more economical solution than using a wireless HDMI extender, and depending on your TV’s smart platform, you might already be able to use it. Like the extender, though, video resolution usually tops out at 1080p. If you have a higher-resolution monitor, the screen will probably be scaled down as it’s transmitted to the TV or adapter. Like most wireless solutions, it can also suffer from display lag, which will hurt playing games over it.
Pros: Natively supported by Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, and some smart TV platformers. Receivers are relatively inexpensive.
Cons: Doesn’t usually support 4K. Too much lag for games.

My Tv Doesn’t Have A Spare Hdmi Port
If all HDMI ports are currently in use, use an HDMI switch to turn one port into many. These are relatively cheap devices – we like this Techole HDMI switch with three HDMI outputs.
Connect the port labelled HDMI OUT to the TV using an HDMI cable, then use the three HDMI IN ports to attach various HDMI-connected devices. You can switch between them using the button on top .
Use A Separate Webcam For Videoconferencing
Both of the above options still require you to have a webcam for videoconferencing if you want to look directly at your TV screen and at the camera at the same time. You can use the one on your laptop, but if you do, youll look like youre talking to the floor. If you want to do a videoconference using the TV, for yourself or your kids, it will be easier if you can look at the TV instead of at the webcam on your laptop. An external webcam positioned on the TV can provide a better image than the built-in webcam of your laptop it also includes a microphone, and video chats end up looking more natural when youre looking at the TV. You might need a USB extension cable to reach the TV, but with a webcam on top of the TV, your conferences will have a much larger screen, and it will be easier for kids to chat with their friends and teachers while they cant be in the same room.
With a little work, and maybe one spare adapter or an extra-long cable, you can start using a TV as a monitor while youre working from home. Of course, dont forget that once the workday ends, you can also now play games from your PC on the TV and enjoy a bigger, more immersive experience.
