Why Do Batteries Have This Sensor
According to Dell representatives, original Dell batteries have these microchips to help consumers detect counterfeit batteries. This could be a good thing for consumers. If you buy what you think is a genuine Dell battery from a third party, you should be able to know pretty quickly if you have a counterfeit. That is, unless the counterfeiters have taken a microchip from a dead genuine battery and have inserted it into the counterfeit.
How Hard Is It To Replace The Battery
Dell makes it relatively easy to replace the battery in the Inspiron 15 7000. There are ten Phillips-head screws on the bottom of the laptop that, when removed, allow the bottom panel to be removed.
Once inside, there are four more screws that hold the battery in place. Undo them, unclip the battery, and reverse the process with the new replacement battery. Everything should line right up, and the entire process should take between five and 10 minutes.
Signs Of A Swollen Battery
Now, the signs may be subtle, or impossible to ignore. As the battery expands, your device might slowly change shape. For example, your laptop keyboard could start protruding, or you may notice your device is suddenly wobbly when you lay it on a flat surface, with the lower part of the chassis a bit distended if you look at it on edge. Or it might be something simply as mystifying as certain keyboard keys becoming hard to push.
If your laptop is easy to open , you can take off the bottom cover and, in many cases, check out the battery’s physical state that way. If it looks puffy or rounded, that likely means it’s swollen. Most important: When inspecting if your battery is swollen, proceed with caution, as the cells are under pressure. Wear eye protection and don’t poke or pry at the cells.
This swollen battery actually caused the touchpad to bulge from this laptop’s keyboard deck.
A swollen battery isn’t always immediately obvious when it happens, or at the onset. It depends on how much room it has to expand inside the laptop chassis. With thin laptops, that’s usually little or none. The size of swelled battery can vary from a small bump to one large enough to turn your laptop into a seesaw, or even pop out the touchpad.

Replacing The Battery In The Dell Xps 15
Once youve completely drained the battery, unplugged everything, and have a replacement battery in hand, we can start replacing the replacement process. Flip the laptop over with the lid closed, and have the thing face away from you. Then follow these steps:
- Use the Torx T5 screwdriver to remove the eight screws holding the base cover in place.
- Use a spudger or prying tool to separate the base cover from the laptop. Start from the bottom corners and slide towards the center of the bottom edge, then from the corner to the top of the cover.
- Disconnect the battery from the motherboard. The ribbon cable is connected on the top right corner of the battery, and you can use a fingernail to lift the connector up.
- Use a Philips head screwdriver to remove the eight screws holding the battery in place. There are two types of screws, and four of each. These have different lengths, so you have to remember where each type goes to put the new battery back in place.
- Peel the bits of tape at the bottom of the battery, which holds the speaker cable on the battery.
- Lift the battery out of the compartment and remove it.

Not The Original Battery
If the laptop won’t recognize the battery, it’s also possible that you do not have an original battery. It may be a counterfeit or an aftermarket replacement battery. Many aftermarket batteries, which are typically of much poorer quality, aren’t built too the exacting standards as required by the computer manufacturers.
Contrary To What Tech Support May Tell You You May Not Need To Buy A New Battery If You Can Just Reset The Battery Sensor
If you pull out your Dell laptop at your local coffee shop and press the power button, you expect the screen to light up and to see a login screen. But what if nothing happens because of a dead battery? Thankfully, you may have a cord with you. But when you plug in the cord, the battery either isn’t being detected or is simply plugged in but not charging. Is there an alternative to a new battery?

Dell Laptop Batteries What You Should Know
Dell provides a standard one-year warranty on its laptop batteries. It says Dell laptop batteries are a consumable item and battery performance reduces over time and use. Its website goes on to recommend only replacing them with their proprietary equivalents. However, Dell does provide DIY tips on how to so without using an authorized service technician.

What Do Laptop Battery Ratings Voltage And Milliamp
Voltage is a measure of electric potential. What’s important to know is that your replacement battery’s voltage must match the original, or as specified in your laptop manual. Laptop battery capacity is measured in Milliamp-hours . This can vary, and third party battery manufacturers commonly provide both less-expensive batteries with lower capacity and more expensive, higher-capacity batteries as well.
Removing The Old Batteries
Be careful. The electronic design is really hard to make on your own, so don’t break it. NEVER cut through the protective casing on the batteries! The entire outer case is negatively charged, so it becomes much easier to short circuit if the casing is damaged.
1. Use a sharp blade to work between the metal contact and the battery terminal. You can either ‘saw’ or ‘twist’ to cut through the spot-welded contact. Most batteries are also glued to each other, however this is a cheap glue that will readily come apart with hand strength and doesn’t damage the casing.
2. This may take some time, so patience is required to do this for the contacts of each battery on both ends. If you are using a metal blade, avoid contact with other batteries as you are cutting so that you don’t short-circuit .
3. Once all the batteries are removed, it is likely that all your contacts are pretty mangled . I used a small clamp to press them all flat again.

Help Me Laptop: How Do I Find The Best Battery Replacement
ByRami Tabari09 June 2018
At some point in your laptop’s life, the battery is going to get worse and worse until it doesn’t work anymore. This week on the Tom’s Guide forums, one user asked for help in finding the best battery replacement when that dreaded day comes.
mhcwei writes, “I have a Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 laptop, and I need a new battery. Dell told me it is 65 Wh 6 cells. Any suggestion?”
Well, mhcwei, you actually did most of the work already. You know the model as well as the kind of battery inside the laptop. After doing a little digging, I found that you can purchase a replacement battery from Dell itself. It’s a 11.1v, 65-WHr, six-cell primary lithium-ion battery that costs $57.87, and it’s labeled as compatible with your Inspiron 15R 5537. For reference, WHr equates to the battery capacity, so the more the better.
There is also a cheaper, $29.99 model on . However, we cannot vouch for that battery, because we haven’t tested it. It’s safer to recommend buying from the company that sold you the laptop.
Laptop: I Can’t Find You
The problem with many Dell batteries relates to the laptop’s failure to detect a microchip located inside the battery assembly. This microchip is responsible for saying, “Hey! I’m a genuine Dell battery. It’s safe to charge me now.” If the laptop does not detect this microchip, the battery may charge slowly, may not charge at all, or may not turn the computer on even if it’s fully charged.

It’s Possible To Reset The Sensor
To correct this issue, you might just need to reset the system’s ability to detect the battery. Unfortunately, however, many of Dell’s technical support staff are either unaware of this procedure or are being pressured to sell new batteries. Of course, it is somewhat difficult for a technician thousands of miles away to know the difference between a battery that has truly failed and a battery that simply isn’t being detected properly.
Replacing Laptop Battery With A Higher Capacity
I currently own a Dell Inspiron 15 7580 which has a 42 Wh battery operating at 11 volts.
Obviously Li ion batteries degrade over time so I’ll eventually have to replace the battery. Does anyone know if its okay to replace the battery with one of a higher wattage like a 56 Wh battery?
I checked the service manual and noticed that the Inspiron 7580 could be configured with a 42 or 56 Wh battery. Does anyone else own the same model and have a 56 Wh battery?
Welcome to the Dell Community
If you have a 2.5″ HDD there is not enough space to have the larger capacity battery.
If you have the M.2 SSD then you should be able to go to the larger battery.
They are different voltage batteries. Wont this damage the circuitry?
With both options available, the answer is a qualified yes, you can replace the original with a larger capacity, but there’s an IF: that’s possible only if your system doesn’t have a 2.5″ drive in it. The 56 WHr battery is physically larger than the original and will take up the 2.5″ drive bay.
So, if your system has only an M.2 drive in it, you can use the larger battery. If you have a 2.5″ drive, it’ll need to be replaced by an M.2 drive to use the larger battery.
Why Your Laptops Battery Capacity Declines
Laptop batteries decline due to a number of factors. Heat, usage, age all of these things are bad for batteries. Batteries will slowly die no matter what even if you put your battery in a closet and never touched it, it would slowly lose capacity due to age. However, if you never use your battery say you use your laptop at your desk most of the time and it gets rather hot, which is bad for the battery removing the battery can certainly help prolong its life.

Be Careful When Shopping For A Replacement Laptop Battery
Regardless of the cost, the safest approach is to only purchase batteries from the company that made the computer.
The batteries in laptop computers are expensive , and like any battery, they have a limited lifespan. When it comes time to replace the battery inside your laptop computer, you may be tempted to save a few bucks and buy a replacement from a company other than the one that made the computer.
In a widely reported story, someone in Ohio purchased a battery for their ThinkPad laptop from a company called Shentech rather than directly from Lenovo or IBM . No doubt they paid less than IBM or Lenovo would have charged. When I checked today, a battery for a T40 ThinkPad that Lenovo sells for $119 is only $65 at Shentech. Was it a bargain? Not at all the battery caught on fire.
The story made news not because of the fire but because the battery, bearing an IBM logo, was a fake . After examining the faulty battery, IBM purchased additional batteries from Shentech, and they too were fakes. Needless to say, IBM is suing Shentech .
The lesson here is to only buy replacement batteries from the company that made the computer. Off-brand batteries are more likely to scrimp on safety features.
And, should there be a recall of the battery in your laptop, make it easy for the manufacturer to contact you–register your computer purchase.
