It’s All About The Gpu

Laptops that rely on their processors’ integrated graphics are useless for VR applications. Just as when shopping for a gaming laptop or a mobile workstation, your first priority must be a discrete or dedicated GPU, and a good one. Even avid gamers are often satisfied with a GPU capable of showing 60 frames per second on a laptop screen or desktop monitor, but on a headset that frame rate can at best look choppy and at worst cause nauseaâa sustained 90fps is more comfortable.

All Geforce Rtx Laptops Are Vr Capable But Optional Virtuallink Branding Could Breed Confusion

Earlier this month NVIDIA announced that slew of hardware partners will be launching GeForce RTX gaming laptops which will include the companys newest Turing-based RTX graphics. While the company has confirmed that all models with RTX 2060, 2070, and 2080 GPUs will technically have the GPU horsepower to run VR headsets, port confusion could trip up consumers who arent diligent about their purchase.

NVIDIA announced RTX gaming laptops at CES earlier this month, saying that some 40 laptop models from major OEMs will be launching on January 29th. As all of the laptops are equipped with RTX 2060, 2070, or 2080 mobile GPUs, NVIDIA says theyll all meet the VR Ready bar from a performance standpoint, but ports are a different matter.

While the recently established VirtualLink standard is designed to simplify things by allowing future VR headsets to operate from a single USB-C port, it cant just be any USB-C portit specifically has to be connected to the GPU a USB-C port coming off the motherboard wont cut it.

In NVIDIAs latest RTX desktop graphics cards its easy to tell because the GPU is such a large component and you can directly see if the USB-C port is connected to the GPU or not. In a laptop, where the GPU is deeply embedded, its not clear if any number of USB-C ports on the computer are coming from the motherboard or the GPU.

Gpu Vr Requirements For Running Vr

Can A Laptop Run Vr

The demands on GPU are particularly high because it has to render two displays to create VR experience, one for each of your eyes. Add to that a much higher render resolution for VR apps and youâll get the idea why an average graphic processor may not be enough.

We recommend purchasing at least a minimum recommended GPU to ensure consistent 90+ FPS rate. Cheaper GPU might handle VR apps, but the lower FPS may cause nausea.

HTC Vive & Oculus Rift S minimum GPU requirement: Nvidia GTX 970 or greater. Alternatives: Radeon R9 Fury, GeForce GTX 1060, Radeon R9 390X

Valve Index headset minimum GPU requirement: GTX 1070 or greater. Alternatives: GTX 900, Radeon Pro Vega 64

Note: AMDâs VR Ready FX and Ryzen graphic cards and processors have been dominating VR performance due to close partnership with VR headset vendors and native LiquidVR interface.

Screen Storage And Battery

After meeting the VR hardware requirements, other factors come down to your personal preferences and needs. You’ll find both 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch laptops compatible with popular headsets , but of course you’ll be wearing your headset while playing, not looking at the screen. The display size you pick should depend on how you use your laptop when you’re not using VR.

Our laptop buying guide will walk you through the pros and cons of different screen sizes. If your work is mostly confined to your desk, a 17.3-inch notebook is a plus, though some can weigh a barely luggable 8 to 10 pounds. If you’ll often take your laptop on the go, a lighter 15.6-inch system makes sense. In addition to the screen size, you’ll want to assess the display characteristics, notably the peak refresh rate modern gaming laptops have “faster refresh” screens than most older models.

All laptops have their own visual styles, as well, ranging from businesslike bland to gamer garish. The difference is totally subjective, but you don’t want to be stuck looking at something you don’t like. For example, Alienware machines tend toward flashy most Gigabyte machines look much more conservative.

The Best Vr Laptops: These Notebooks Are Ready For The Rift

And the HTC Vive, too

Explore virtual worlds at their finest with one of the best VR laptops. Just like many of the best gaming PCs, a few of the best gaming laptops are now VR-ready, giving you more options than ever for VR gaming on the go.

Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR have been on the shelves for quite some time now, with Valve Index joining them, bringing virtual reality out of the realm of ’90s cyberpunk fantasies and into our homes is easier than ever. And now, thanks to the best VR laptops on, you can now bring it with you wherever you go.

Just keep in mind that the price of entry to laptop VR gaming is still pretty steep. Early adopters will need to pay a hefty toll to cross the bridge into the VR space. And, on top of the price of a VR-ready laptop, youll need to spend more for a headset. A PlayStation VR Iron Man VR Bundle already sets you back $350 , but PC VR gaming costs considerably more. The Oculus Rift S headset, for one, is priced at $399 while the HTC Vive Cosmos is a hefty $699 .

Prices will eventually come down as the technology bends to the will of Moore’s Law, and VR-ready laptops and gadgets will be accessible to more people. But, if you want to step into the portable virtual reality world now, the best VR laptops are worth the investment.
