How To Choose Laptop Components

Can You Build Your Own Laptop? [Answered]

To build your own laptop, you should buy a barebones laptop, a processor, a RAM, a network card, hard drives, etc. In this part, I will show you how to choose proper components.

But before grabbing the parts for your laptop, you should decide what the laptops main purpose will be. Most people build laptops for playing high-end games. In this case, you need to build your laptop with high-end specifications, but that will be directly proportional to the cost at the end.

If you just need a portable laptop for browsing, email checking, and word processing, building a laptop is not necessary, because basic integrated laptops can meet your needs. You can buy an Ultrabook from any store.

1. Barebones Laptop

A barebones laptop is a half-assembled personal computer with a laptop shell, power supply, motherboard, camera, keyboard, cooling system, etc. Users can decide which component to buy and install, according to their own needs and budget.

A barebones laptop is usually produced by Original Design Manufacturers like Quanta, Compal, Wistron, Inventec, Pegatron, ECS, FIC, ARIMA, Mitac, Clevo, MSI, etc. These ODM companies produce PCs for some brands like Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Mac, etc. Then, these products will be sold to users as OEM products.

Here are some examples of the relationship between ODM and brands :

2. CPU

When you plan to buy a CPU, you should pay attention to the following aspects:

3. RAM

4. Hard Drive

5. Graphics Card

Is It Worth Building Your Own Laptop

A lot of times you buy preconfigured OEM laptops directly from stores or manufacturer websites. These laptops are built in bulk with specifications fit for a variety of uses and applications, and you can start using it immediately when you get home or after the next package delivery truck arrives.

But these laptops may not meet personalized needs, especially for gamers and professional users. In addition, custom laptop computers have high cost effectiveness. Of course, the premise is that you build it yourself.

At the same price, the performance of the custom computers far exceeds the brand computers, because you can choose computer accessories according to your needs and don’t need to spend money on components you didnt really want. Therefore, it’s worth building a laptop.

You can build your own laptop computers through the following ways:

1. Laptop Customization Service

Some PC brands like Lenovo and Dell provide custom laptop service. They allow you to choose components like processors, displays, hard drives, and so on. Then, they build the computer according to your specification.

I don’t recommend this method if your budget is limited. This method is not cost-effective. But if you don’t know how to build a laptop at all, this method is also OK.

2. Building a Laptop by Yourself

Choosing A Gpu And Cpu

Picking a GPU and CPU that’ll provide you an advanced feature for better performance. However, these two constituents are irreplaceable for some laptops, but you need to pick a portable one.

These two features are considered essential if you want to enjoy games at higher resolution and steady performance.

A powerful CPU boosts up your gaming system by offering fast performance. The average RAM you can use is from 8-16 GB for smooth functioning and can be more ungradable in the future.

Different companies deliver quality and powerful CPUs for gaming, includes Asus, Nvidia, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Always check their specifications for 1080hp solid gaming, steady flow, and their power settings.

We’ve also mentioned the best customizable CPU that you can avail of.

  • Intel Core i5-10600K

External GPUs

If you want to upgrade your system, then an external GPU would be a better idea. It improves your laptop graphics and provides a better solution for your issues related to graphics. However, if you’re looking to buy a graphic card for better game vision, avoid purchasing an AMD radeon r5 graphic card because this may lead to a lack of performance.

External GPU does not only offer a better version of graphics but is also upgradable and movable. It’ll enable you to play games on an enhanced system. However, you’ll need a Thunderbolt 3 connection for connecting it, but unfortunately, not every laptop comes with it.

Speeding Up Hard Disks With Intel Optane Memory

If, like us, you’re partial to standard platter hard drives for the amount of storage space they offer on a value-for-money basis then you’ll also have mixed feelings about their performance.

Hard disk drives are great for masses of storage, they’re not great for speed. The good news is, there’s an easy upgrade you can do to your system to improve performance and help speed up these drives.

Intel’s Optane Memory HDD accelerator does just that. It’s an M.2 drive that slots into your motherboard and makes standard hard drive access as much as 14 times faster.

Simply install the accelerator in any spare M.2 slot on your motherboard, then . From there you can then choose the hard drive you wish to accelerate. Over time this will boost performance and improve your experience.

You could use this to improve the performance of your large storage drives or as an alternative to having an SSD or NVMe drive as your Windows Boot drive.

Hopefully, you’ve found this guide useful.

How To Assemble A Gaming Laptop

A $500 Gaming PC That You Can ACTUALLY Build

Once you have all your components ready, itâs time to assemble your gaming laptop.

The first step is to open the shell and turn it over so the bottom is facing upwards. Install the CPU, RAM, and Wi-Fi card onto their respective sockets. Do the same with your GPU and hard drive.

Next, install your chosen operating system. Once youâve done all those steps, screw back on the bottom cover of the shell. Now, youâre ready to start gaming. Donât forget to maintain and keep your gaming laptop up to date.

Power Supply: Corsair Tx

A common meme in PC-building communities is a power supply as a ticking time bomb. And theyre not wrong: If there is one component you really, really dont want to mess up, its this one. The best-case scenario is overheating your components and burning them out well before their expected lifespan. The worst-case scenario involves a fire extinguisher.

Youll have to do a little legwork to determine how much power each component of your machine draws, add it all up, and choose a power supply that offers more than that by a comfortable margin. But if you get a truly enormous power supply, youll be spending a lot of money for power that you never use, so thats not necessarily the best strategy, either. In any case, Nvidia recommends a 650W power supply for a 3070-equipped machine, and thats with an i9 processor. Neweggs Power Supply Calculator pegged my overall draw at a little less than 550W, so a 650W power supply should be more than I need.

Should I Get A 4k Screen In My Laptop

Nah. 4K gaming laptops are overkill fine for video editing on the go if you’re dealing with 4K content, but it’s not the optimal choice for games. The standard 1080p resolution means that the generally slower mobile GPUs are all but guaranteed high frame rates, while companies are slowly drip-feeding 1440p panels into their laptop ranges.

A 1440p screen offers the perfect compromise between high resolution and decent gaming performance. At the same time, a 4K notebook will overstress your GPU and tax your eyeballs as you squint at your 15-inch display.

Build Your Own Gaming Laptop

There are tons of options available online if you are looking to build gaming PC, but what if you are in the market for a gaming laptop?

There arent a ton of DIY gaming laptop options out there. You could pick up a laptop shell, then try to piece together parts from around the internet. Or you could grab a kit and build a Raspberry PI based laptop to play old emulators games.

Both options will result in a clunky, unpolished system that most likely wont even be close to what you were will need to have a consistent quality gaming experience in 2018.

The best option is using a service like the one provided here at Velocity Micro, where you can pick the size and components of your laptop. We then custom build the machine for you, just like our desktop systems.

Velocity Micro offers a wide range of fully customizable models, from a compact 14 laptop to a full 17 desktop replacement with dual GPUs and an overclockable CPU. We have a system for casual and the most demanding gamers alike.

How About Battery Life

Can You Build A Free Gaming PC?!

The short answer is not to count on your gaming notebook being super portable.

If youre using your laptop to play games, you need to keep your laptop plugged in to get the full performance out of your GPU. And if you dont, youll be lucky if your laptop lasts an hour gaming. In our testing experience, most gaming laptops last only a few hours on a charge when performing other tasks, but never as long as ultraportables without discrete GPUs. If you need something to last 8 hours while you work, it wont be a gaming notebook.

Some do last long, but thats often at the expense of the display, and you dont want to play all your games on a dark, dim or inaccurate screen.

Speed Up Your Pc With The Right Storage Options

When it comes down to the final minute, your type of storage can make the difference between a victory or a loss so you’ll want speed on your side. The main storage options are a hard disk drive , a solid state drive or a hybrid of the two. Unlike a traditional hard disk drive , a solid state drive has no moving parts so it serves data up to the processor more rapidly. Modern SSDs come in two protocols, SATA and Non-Volatile Memory Express . Look out for Intel® Optane SSDs for an unbelievably responsive experience and faster game launch and level loading. Shop the Intel® SSD range.

Installing standard Solid State Drives

Installing an SSD is the easiest way to speed up your device. Just follow these steps:

  • Ensure you back up or clone your old drive and then open the machine.

  • Check the size of your drive bay. If you don’t have a 2.5-inch drive bay available, attach a bracket to the new Intel® SSD to fit in the 3.5-inch drive bay.

  • Slide the drive into place, line up the holes and screw them into place.

  • Connect a SATA cable from the motherboard to the SSD card.

  • Re-assemble your computer, insert your installation CD or USB that you copied in the beginning and reboot.

  • Cpu: Amd Ryzen 5 3600 ~$300

Just because youre building on a budget doesnt mean you cant get quality parts. The 6-core AMD Ryzen 5 3600 is a good choice for budget buyers, and will only set you back around $300 or so.

If you want something a bit cheaper, wed also recommend the Ryzen 3100 and 3300X CPUs as solid choices. They may not be top-of-the-line CPUs, but they also dont disappoint.

    Gpu: Nvidia Geforce 3070

As mentioned above, the GPU is the most important place to start with a gaming PC build. The first big choice youll have to make is between Nvidia and AMD, each of which produces high-end graphics cards. The pros and cons of each is probably worth its own article, but in my own PC builds, Ive had good luck with Nvidia and bad luck with AMD, and going with brands you trust is one of the best strategies in this process.

From there, it was just a matter of selecting one of Nvidias three new cards: the GeForce RTX 3070, 3080 or 3090. Because I had a $1,500 budget in mind, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 was the natural choice. The other two cards would have eaten up too much of the cost. Buying older cards can save you some money, but makes your machine less future-proof.

It’s worth mentioning that at the time of writing, the RTX 3070 is still a few weeks away from release, and it’s probably going to sell out quite fast. If you absolutely, positively have to build something now, you could go with the older Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 series, which is currently dropping in price, or the similarly powerful AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT. However, AMD will also release a new GPU shortly, so it’s probably best to just be patient and catch a restock.
