How We Chose The Best Antivirus Software
There are hundreds of antivirus software solutions available. We investigated 20 popular solutions often considered the software of choice by cybersecurity experts. Of critical importance was ease of use with all providers, making it something every consumer could navigate and use.
We then considered whether or not the provider had offerings beyond antivirus software. This included malware, ransomware protection, and multiple device protections. Those that had a free version or trial were given preference. We gave particular importance to platforms that were easy to use and integrate.
Why Macs Dont Need Traditional Antivirus
Due to a combination of demographics, historical precedent, and tighter controls, Macs have historically been less vulnerable to infection than Windows computers:
- People have far fewer Macs than Windows computers: Over the past year, 17 percent of Web-browsing desktop computers ran macOS, compared with about 78 percent for all Windows versions combined, so macOS is a less lucrative target for parties making malware.
- Macs include a wider variety of useful first-party apps by default, and both macOS and downloaded apps receive updates through Apples own App Store. Windows PC owners are more accustomed to downloading both software and hardware drivers from the Internet, as well as providing permissions to third-party apps, which are more likely to be malicious.
- Newer versions of Windows must make concessions to allow apps made for older versions of Windows to run, creating a complicated set of legacy systems to secure. In contrast, macOS has seen less change since the introduction of OS X, and Apple has been less hesitant to render apps made for older versions obsolete. In fact, with the introduction of macOS Catalina in 2019, the company rendered older 32-bit apps useless.
- Catalina also adds security features that make running malicious software difficult, including requiring apps to request a variety of permissions, such as access to files, microphones, cameras, and other services, as you install them. This makes it pretty difficult to install something you dont mean to.

Face up to masses of malware and more sophisticated attacks
If youre running Windows 10, should you get an antivirus app? There are certainly some good reasons to do so, as well explore in this article, not the least of which is that Microsofts operating system is so popular that it makes a seriously tempting target for malware authors in terms of the potential spoils to be gotten.

Vulnerabilities In Apples Systems
The belief that Macs are fairly resilient to malware isnt just idle fanboy-ism. Windows PCs make up roughly 90% of the market, making them a much more attractive target to malware makers.
And Macs really do have some stellar built-in tools that protect you right off the bat. For example, when you download an app off the internet, your Mac checks it against a list of known malware apps using XProtect. It works invisibly in the background, meaning it needs no maintenance or activation and doesnt slow down your Mac. Gatekeeper, meanwhile, will prevent the app from opening without your permission if it hasnt been digitally signed as safe by Apple. And now, Apple has even started notarizing apps so that they can prove they are trustworthy.
On top of that, all apps are sandboxed, meaning they can only do what theyre meant to do, without being able to access critical system infrastructure and settings.
But there are gaps in the armor that protect Mac users systems. The MacOS layer of security relies on Apple adding quarantine tags to suspicious or outright malicious software, which in turn results in the warning dialogue you see when you try to open them.
Thomas Reed, Director of Mac & Mobile at security firm Malwarebytes, told me that the defenses arent as comprehensive as it seems. Adding that flag is not a requirement, and not all software does , he explained. For example, torrent software often doesnt, while at the same time being used heavily in piracy.

Why You Should Use Windows Defender To Protect Your Pc
Two separate testing houses, AV-comparatives and AV-test, rank Windows Defender nearly at the top of the products both labs have tested.
Its important to note that antimalware testing is a time-intensive process. Even sites like AV-comparatives use automated tests that crawl the web and seek out malicious sites and URLs, trying to reproduce real-world scenarios that all of us would encounter in our daily work.
One key point stood out: In AV-comparatives test, Microsoft was one of the four vendors that didnt allow any malware to take over its test systems. Vendors whose PCs ended up compromised with malware included big names, such as McAfee and Symantec.
Heres a snapshot of AV-comparatives findings:
To be fair, the AV-comparatives test showed a few weaknesses with Windows Defender. The tests revealed three user-dependent test cases, where Defender didnt immediately identify the malware, and asked the user for permission to install the file. Thats not idealusers would probably be inclined to allow the malware onto the system. Windows Defender was also unusually heavy-handed with false positives, blocking a massive 74 legitimate apps and services.
Heres a snapshot of the AV-test June 2019 roundup:
Is It Worth Paying For Antivirus Software
Free AV software has improved greatly over the years, and again, anyone using Windows 10 already has free AV software that works pretty well. If all you want is software that detects malicious software, blocks it from doing damage, and scans your system, then free is good.
Paid versions, however, will offer protections on web browsing, protect identity, or offer VPN services, as well as password managers and parental control across multiple devices and operating systems. These are more essential now, as more people are working remotely or using a single device for work and personal computing.

Something Is Always Better Than Nothing
Earlier, we asked if you need to use antivirus today. The answer was yes, and no. The no refers to the fact that you don’t have to go and find antivirus software anymore. If you’re using Windows 10, and everything is up to date, you already have a solid, free tool built in that won’t hog your system resources and will keep an eye on things in the background.
And if you’re using nothing at all, immediately go enable Windows Defender.
Sadly, you do still need antivirus software in 2020. It’s not necessarily to stop viruses anymore, but there are all kinds of miscreants out there who want nothing more than to steal and cause mayhem by getting inside your PC. It sounds scary, but because much of our lives are now conducted online, the threat is as real as ever.
Which route you take and which software you use is ultimately your decision. But don’t think it won’t happen to you. That’s precisely when it will.

Is Windows Defender Good Enough In 2021
Microsofts Windows Defender has come a long way in terms of its cybersecurity capabilities. It used to be really bad, but recently, Microsoft has turned Defender into a pretty decent free antivirus.
For example, Defender now includes sandboxing and cloud-based malware detection boosting overall protection and making threat detection faster.
But even with these changes, our readers keep asking us these 3 questions:
I spent several weeks testing out both Microsofts Defender and all of the top antivirus programs on the market, ranking them on malware detection rates, system performance, scan speeds, overall internet security protection, and customer support.
For starters, Windows Defender failed to block many viruses that other programs easily caught, and thats because Microsoft doesnt issue enough regular updates to the Defender database to make it able to detect the latest threats. And lets say that you do get a virus, Microsoft isnt going to help you theyll just tell you that you shouldve had another antivirus installed!
So is it good enough? Not really

How Do I Activate Mcafee Antivirus On An Hp Laptop
You activate McAfee by clicking on the pop up they show to visit their website where you can sign up for a paid plan. You can also open the McAfee program from the menu and choose to click there to upgrade.
That being said, we suggest you just get rid of that program and rely on the Microsoft Defender Antivirus program that came with your HP computer. It will be sufficient in many cases. And according to sites like av-test.org , Windows Defender Antivirus does a pretty good job of protecting you.
They get the same rating as some of the top paid antivirus programs you can use with your HP laptop.
The third-party antivirus programs like McAfee that often will be pre-installed on HP computers will prompt you to update the software.
They do so because you typically have a free trial period where the antivirus program is free to use and after that period you will need to pay to keep the protection they offer.
Best Antivirus Software Free & Paid
To protect your computer, you should always be running antivirus software, whether that’s a pre-installed program, freeware, or a purchased subscription service. There are multiple freeware antivirus applications. There are also multiple subscription services that provide antivirus software and periodic updates. You should always update your computer to ensure your information is kept secure.
Most of the free services are completely adequate for the average consumer. The service sends software updates as attack methods change and new attacks are begun. The drawback to freeware is that some programs install unwanted bloatware, which requires excessive disk and memory space.
A purchased subscription service also works well. After you sign up and download the software, the service takes over, scheduling checks of your computer and keeping you safe while you browse the internet. The drawback to subscription services is the annual fee.
A good antivirus program that incorporates antispyware, anti-adware, and anti-ransomware protections will help keep you safe. Self-encrypting drives can also protect and secure business data.

What Is The Difference Between Antivirus Software And Antimalware
Viruses are designed to replicate and spread, while malware is a catchall name for all types of malicious code aimed at damaging a computer or network. All viruses are malware, but not all malware is a virus. AV software identifies threats through signature detections based on what is already known in the signature database. This is why AV software needs to be updated regularly.
Antimalware software detects more sophisticated malware attacks. The two types of defense software complement each other, and some AV software has antimalware built-in, but the two are different, and protection against both is necessary for true protection.
Norton 360 Best Antivirus Alternative To Microsofts Windows Defender In 2021
Norton 360 is better than Windows Defender in every aspect it has higher malware detection rates, better internet security protections, more additional features, and coverage for more platforms.
In my head-to-head malware test, Norton caught way more malware files than Defender Norton scored a perfect 100% malware detection rate, blocking several tricky spyware and ransomware files that Defender missed.
And when it comes to internet security tools, Defender just cant compete.
Norton 360 includes:
- Extra features like a VPN and password manager.
- And a lot more
Microsoft recently expanded Defenders web protections to third-party browsers like Chrome and Firefox, but in my testing, Nortons anti-phishing protections caught a significantly larger number of suspicious websites than Defender including malicious links in emails and text messages.
Norton 360 also has a wide range of additional features that Windows Defender doesnt have including an excellent VPN which provides encrypted access to 30+ servers around the globe, barely affects internet speed, and removes geo-restrictions. Norton also has a really good password manager with all of the essentials, like auto-saving, auto-filling, and biometric login, as well as extras such as a password auto-changer .

What Does Windows Defender Offer
The software can scan your system for known malware signatures, but it can also monitor your software for signs of an infection.
One of the stand-out features that Defender offers is its ability to make sure that absolutely no malware can take over its test systems. That’s something that even some of the paid-for services fail at from time to time, including names like McAfee and Symantec, according to AV-comparatives.
Another area that the Defender did well in was zero-day attacks. This was previously a problem area for the service. Now, in recent testing, since the June update, it scored perfectly when it came to zero-day attacks. Say no more.
The fact that Windows Defender keeps itself updated and scans, all without you needing to do a thing â or even noticing it running â really makes this a very appealing option.
What About My Phone’s Built
Weve had readers ask why they cant just use the free VPN built into their iPhones. Indeed, theres a VPN configuration page in Settings, but you cant use it without going through the complex process of manually setting up a VPN profile. The most important element of that profile is the VPN server you want to connect with. And to gain access to that server, youll need to pay for a subscription. Which comes with an app. So just use NordVPN, or whatever app suits you best! The same is true on Android devices.
When you do have a VPN installed, it shows up in Settings, in the same section that holds Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. We were surprised to find this item present on a test iPhone, when we hadnt installed a VPN. It turns out that a Dashlane updateautomatically installed a simple VPN. But even then, the Settings page advised performing all configuration through the Dashlane app. Sorry, your phone just doesnt have a VPN client built in.

Do I Really Need Antivirus For Hp Computers
If you use your computer to browse the web, email, online banking, etc. its a very good idea to have a strong antivirus program installed. We strongly recommend it. Its a cheap price to pay to secure your computer and do what you can to keep the bad guys out.
Almost all HP computers run on a Windows operating system from Microsoft. And if you just got your HP laptop at the store you will be running Windows on the system.
So, what does that mean for my protection level regarding viruses?
It means that your HP computer is as vulnerable to attacks as virtually any other laptop that runs the Windows operating system. In Windows 10 you find a program called Windows Defender. It does the same thing as the classic antivirus programs and you can in many cases just go with this option.
The operating system is the most central program on the machine and its the vulnerabilities around Windows we need to protect by installing a proper antivirus program on the computer.
So, does Microsoft Windows still need antivirus protection today?
Thats the very short answer to that question and its exactly because all PC computers use Windows that we need to be careful. Its by far the biggest operating system out there, and thats why its typically a popular target for hackers and other people with bad intentions and high IT skills.
Most of these have a 30-day trial period or even a free version.
How Do I Get Rid Of A Virus On My Hp Laptop
When you suspect you have an infected computer you need to put your HP computer in Safe Mode. You do that by restarting your computer and as soon as you see something on the screen you press F8.
That will let you enable safe mode on your computer. And please note that you can still go online during safe mode.
Now you can open the Windows Security app to a complete scan of your computer. Hopefully, the program will locate the virus and help you solve the problem. If not, you might need to reinstall Windows on your HP computer.
But lets assume we found the problem.
