How Can I Deploy A Third Party Antivirus On A Windows 11 Computer
You may choose to install a third party developed antivirus or Total internal security products to improve security on your Windows 11 computer. Managing the antivirus solution is straightforward. In normal situations, you will get an installation media that contains the antivirus software of the third party software provider like Symantec, Avast or Bitdefender.
Inserting the installation media through the DVD drive or the USB drive should help you setup the antivirus for the Microsoft Windows 11. You may need to customize the options of quick scan, complete scan or periodic scans at a pre-determined interval of time.
Why You Still Need Antivirus Software
Every day, new malware and other online threats emerge. In fact, the AV-Test Institute registers over 350,000 new pieces of malware and potentially unwanted applications every day.1 Yes, you read that right: every single day. In general, malware is more of a problem than PUAs, making up 90 percent of all total threats in 2020 vs. the 12 percent from PUAs.
That being said, some operating systems are much more susceptible to viruses than others, with Windows coming in first. 87 percent of ransomware targeted Windows computers as of January 25, 2021, according to managed service providers .2

But Is Windows Defender The Best Antivirus What About Other Programs
If you look at that antivirus comparison we linked to above, youll notice that Windows Defender, while good, does not get the highest ranks in terms of raw protection scores. So why not use something else?
First, lets look at those scores. AV-TEST found that it still caught 99.9% of the widespread and prevalent malware in April 2017, along with 98.8% percent of the zero-day attacks. Avira, one of AV-TESTs top rated antivirus programs, has the exact same scores for Aprilbut slightly higher scores in past months, so its overall rating is much higher. But Windows Defender isnt nearly as crippled as AV-TESTs 4.5-out-of-6 rating would have you believe.
Furthermore, security is about more than raw protection scores. Other antivirus programs may occasionally do a bit better in monthly tests, but they also come with a lot of bloat, like browser extensions that actually make you less safe, registry cleaners that are terrible and unnecesary, loads of unsafe junkware, and even the ability to track your browsing habits so they can make money. Furthermore, the way they hook themselves into your browser and operating system often causes more problems than it solves. Something that protects you against viruses but opens you up to other vectors of attack is not good security.
What’s The Best Malware Protection
Which antivirus should you choose? You have a wealth of options. Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Bitdefender Antivirus Plus routinely take perfect or near-perfect scores from the independent antivirus testing labs. A single subscription for McAfee AntiVirus Plus lets you install protection on all your Windows, Android, Mac OS, and iOS devices. Its unusual behavior-based detection technology means Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus is the tiniest antivirus around. We’ve named these four Editors’ Choice for commercial antivirus, but they’re not the only products worth consideration. Read the reviews of our top-rated products, and then make your own decision.
Editors’ Note: We are aware of the allegations of Kaspersky Labs’ inappropriate ties to the Russian government. Until we see some actual proof of these allegations, we will treat them as unproven, and continue to recommend Kaspersky’s security products as long as their performance continues to merit our endorsement.

What About The Others
This isn’t quite the end of the story though. While Windows Defender is now more advanced than it’s ever been before, it’s still not quite as accurate or reliable as brand-name third-party providers. You can generally count on Defender to catch most major threats, but it tends to be less adept at identifying zero-day vulnerabilities in software such as web browsers.
While the short answer is that Defender is sufficient, this should be qualified with a condition: if you use Defender alone, you should remain vigilant. Although this will be basic advice that you’ve heard before, staying away from ad-ridden, suspicious-looking websites can prevent you from coming into contact with more severe digital threats. The same goes for hyperlinks in unexpected emails be wary of what you click.
With that said, sometimes Defender just won’t be the most suitable solution. Perhaps you do have more demanding requirements of your security software, because your device is used for work and you handle sensitive files. Alternatively, you might be configuring a PC on behalf of a less technically-savvy user in this case, you may choose stronger, third-party protection in case they do find their way off the beaten track online.

Macos Big Sur Antivirus
Similarly, Mac computers with the Big Sur operating system come with XProtect, built-in antivirus software that runs in the background without the user having to lift a finger. Apple also offers:
- Gatekeeper: Gatekeeper scans new software for malicious behaviors, preventing it from running if believed to be malware.
- Sandbox mode: Sandbox mode allows Macs to run apps in quarantine, or what Apple calls a virtual sandbox thats isolated from the rest of the computer.
While these features are an essential part of any antivirus software, this built-in protection doesnt block against adware or any PUPs that have been installed without the users knowledge or consent. That means that some malware has been able to slip by in the past.5 Plus, Malwarebytes 2020 State of Malware report found that, compared to 2019, threats against Macs increased by over 400 percent.6 So while you can take your chances and use the Mac built-in antivirus only, redundancy is always a good thing when it comes to digital security, and protection against adware and PUPs is essential.
Listen To The Antivirus Testing Labs
We take the results reported by independent antivirus testing labs very seriously. The simple fact that a company’s product shows up in the results is a vote of confidence, of sorts. It means the lab considered the product significant, and the company felt the cost of testing was worthwhile. Of course, high scores in the tests are also important.
We follow four labs that regularly release detailed reports: SE Labs, AV-Test Institute, MRG-Effitas, and AV-Comparatives. We’ve devised a system for aggregating their results to yield a rating from 0 to 10.

The Argument Against Antivirus
Of course, those that say that antivirus software isnt necessary arent completely wrong. Its definitely not needed for iOS devices, nor does it exist for iOS devices in the first place.
FYI: While some antivirus companies may trick you into thinking you are downloading antivirus for iOS devices, it is usually some form of mobile security that doesnt include virus protection. Be sure to read the fine print!
Theres also the argument that antivirus software is expensive, which we must agree with, unfortunately. On average, antivirus costs around $40 a year, and term lengths arent usually any shorter. And while some free antivirus software exists, it usually limits things like the number of devices you can connect or the amount of time you can use it. Finally, some devices like Windows and Macs have built-in antivirus software, so many feel that additional third-party software is unnecessary. Well, we did some investigating, which brings us to our next topic
How Can I Manage Microsofts Antivirus On Windows 11
Microsofts in-built antivirus for the Windows 11 computer can be managed through the control panel.
You could search for the Control Panel app in the search box. In the control panel, click on System.
From the System applet, click on the Privacy & Security. This will bring up a host of options to manage security and privacy on your Windows 11 computer.
We need to click on the first option under Privacy & Security. This option is for the Window Security. Upon clicking Windows Security, you will see a screen similar to the one posted below. Choose Virus & threat protection to bring up the protection options for antivirus and firewall.
Clicking on the Virus & threat protection gets you to the screen posted below. It lays out a couple of options for you. First, you can see the status of threats found by the Microsoft antivirus and the Microsoft Defender firewall. The Current threats block gives you a brief summary.
However, we are more interested in bringing up the scan options of the Windows 11 antivirus option. So, we click on the Scan options. Clicking on the scan options will take you to the screen posted below:
At any point of time, if you believe or have reasons to believe that your Windows 11 computer may have been compromised by an external threat, perform a Windows 11 Microsoft Defender offline scan. That should give you a clean pointer in terms of your systems vulnerability and any external threat on the computer.
