How We Test Lenovo Laptops

We put each Lenovo laptop through extensive benchmark testing both synthetic and real-world before they end up in the hands of our reviewers. We evaluate each aspect of the laptop, including its performance, battery life, display, speakers and heat management.

In our benchmark testing, we use a Klein K10 colorimeter to detect the brightness and sRGB color gamut of the laptop’s display. For performance testing, we run the laptop through a gauntlet of benchmarks, including Geekbench 5.0 and 3DMark professional graphics tests.

To determine real-world performance, we task the laptop to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution and to duplicate a 25GB multimedia file. Our real-world graphics test is the Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm benchmark with medium settings at 1080p resolution.

We also run heat tests by playing a 15-minute full-screen video and measuring temperatures in different areas of the laptop. Last but not least, our battery test consists of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. For MacBooks and premium Windows 10 laptops, a runtime of over 9 hours is considered a good result whereas gaming laptops and workstations that can stay powered for longer than 5 hours deserve praise.

These tests are complemented with extensive hands-on testing from our reviewers who critique everything from the laptop’s materials to the feel of its touchpad.

Lenovo Thinkpad P17 P15 And P15v Debut Replace The P53/p73 Lineups

Lenovo IdeaPad 330 17.3 Inch AMD A6 8GB 1TB Laptop

While the 2020 updates of the ultraportable 15-inch ThinkPad lineups are mostly incremental improvements of the 2019 versions, Lenovo have majorly updated this 2020 generation of their full-size performance ThinkPads.

The ThinkPad P17 replaces the ThinkPad P73 as the 17-inch full-size performance workstation, with the ThinkPad P15 as the smaller 15-inch variant .

Lenovo claims these have been redesigned from scratch, primarily in order to improve performance and cooling, and thats great news giving our past experience with the P53 and P73 . Theyve also been bumped to 2020-level hardware specs and slightly tweaked here and there.

Furthermore, Lenovo also launched a brand new ThinkPad P15v model, as a lower-specced, more compact, and more affordable alternative to the ThinkPad P15. This could be a good value 15-incher if done right.

Heres a specs sheet of these three, and well further dig into the details down below.

As mentioned already, the ThinkPad 15v is a more affordable mid-range 15-inch notebook, an option somewhere in between the ultraportable ThinkPad P1 and the full-size ThinkPad 15.

It lacks some of the features available on those two, such as the options for an OLED panel or the higher-tier graphics, and thats its major culprit. From what we know so far, the 15v will only ship with an entry-level Quadro P620 dGPU, which cant do much.

Yoga And Flex: Lenovo’s Hybrids

Under the larger ThinkPad and IdeaPad umbrellas fall most of Lenovo’s wide range of touch-screen hybrids, which can function as both laptops and tablets: the Yoga and Flex laptops. Introduced in 2012, the first Yoga pioneered the 2-in-1 convertible laptop concept. Yoga laptops’ 360-degree screen hinges let you flip and fold the system into four positions: a conventional laptop mode, an easel-like stand mode for presentations, an A-frame or tent mode for viewing videos or using touch apps on an airline tray table, and a tablet mode for reading or for scribbling and sketching with a stylus.

In addition to high-end consumer systems called simply Lenovo Yogas, you’ll find ThinkPad Yogas and ThinkBook Yogas that target a business audience. They follow the naming and numbering schemes for the lines they fit into, such as the ThinkPad X1 series. There’s even a ThinkPad C13 Yoga Chromebook.

The Flex models, meanwhile, are broadly similar but tend to be cheaper than Yogas. At various times, the Flexes have been their own brand, though at this writing they’re marketed under the IdeaPad banner. The latest Yogas and Flexes follow the single-digit naming scheme of the IdeaPads, using just 7 and 9, though one Yoga 6 model throws a curveball into the works…just because.

Thinkpad Chassis: Plastic Exterior Magnesium Base Frame

While Lenovo already updated its biggest workstation last year, last year’s changes only focused on the hardware. In fact, barely anything has changed in terms of the design since the ThinkPad P70 from 2015. Although compared to the Lenovo ThinkPad P73, a few minor details have changed, there have not been any major revisions.

This time around, the massive magnesium/aluminum base cover of previous generations has been replaced by a fiber-reinforced plastic shell. The internal, traditional ThinkPad structure frame consists of magnesium. As a result, the rigidity of the base unit is quite high. The plastic is coated in a velvety texture that makes it a smudge and fingerprint magnet. The display cover is surprisingly rigid with very little flexing when trying to twist it from the corners and barely any yielding under pressure. Unfortunately, the same does not hold true for the palm rest, which yields very easily near the smartcard reader and does not transition smoothly to the base at the front edge of the chassis.

The two silver metal hinges within the base unit are firm enough to hold the display in place, while still allowing users to open the laptop with one hand. The maximum angle of the display is greater than 180 degrees.

How We Test 17

Every 17-inch laptop on this list has been extensively tested by us because we know that buying a new laptop can be a huge investment. So, we dont just look at their design, although we do pay close attention to that as well. We take a look at every laptops portability, how light and easy to carry it is, how comfortable it is to work on, how responsive and easy to use its keyboard and trackpad are.

To test the performance, we use every 17-inch laptop in our day-to-day lives thats for work, entertainment and everything else. We run various Windows 10 apps to see how fast they load and real-world tasks to see just how responsive the laptop is. If its a gaming laptop, we naturally see how they perform with the best games both indie and AAA. Naturally, we also perform a number of synthetic benchmarks to get those numbers and compare them to rivaling notebooks.

A laptops battery life is just as important as its performance, and in the case of 17-inch ones with heftier components, its even worth paying attention to. To test each laptops battery, we pay attention to how long we can use it performing regular tasks before it requires charging. We also perform our looped 1080p movie test until the battery dies as well as the PC Mark 10 battery life benchmark.

When all is said and done, we take all that information weve collected for our final verdict, comparing it to the price to decide whether or not its a good value for its target users.

Performance & Battery Life

Lenovo 17.3″ Ideapad Y900 Gaming Laptop Review – GTX 980M – Y900-17ISK

The AMD Ryzen 9 processor doesn’t break any records, but provides very solid performance, with Geekbench 5 CPU scores of 1,532 and 8,389 , which nudge just ahead of rival mobile workstations such as Dell’s 8-core Intel Core i9-10885H-based Precision 5750.

But it’s the GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU that really stands out, achieving scores of 89fps in the Unigine Valley graphics test, and 80fps in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme. Those scores make it one of the fastest 3D performers we’ve seen in recent months — at least among Windows laptops. Apple’s new 16-inch MacBook Pro hits 121fps in the Wild Life Extreme test, courtesy of Apple’s new M1 Max SoC, which sports no less than 10 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores. However, the MacBook Pro is considerably more expensive than the ThinkBook 16p Gen 2 at £2,749.17 or $3,499, so Lenovo’s offering certainly provides impressive performance for a laptop in this price range.

Battery life is quite respectable too, thanks to the integrated Radeon Graphics, which lasted for eight hours and 10 minutes when streaming full-screen video from the web. You’ll have no trouble getting a full day’s work out of the ThinkBook 16p Gen 2 when you’re on the road, with the option of switching back to the discrete Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics when you get back to the office.

What To Look For In A 17

  • Specs: 1080p / Core i5 / 8GB Are Best Bets. You can spend a lot of time delving into specs, but here are the key components to think about when buying a 17-inch laptop If you just want really good mainstream performance, go for a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a 1080p screen.
  • Screen Resolution: Unfortunately, 66 percent of consumer laptops and 51 percent of business systems have low-res screens. If possible, get a display with a 1920 x 1080 or higher resolution.
  • CPU: An Intel Core i5 provides good mainstream performance. Some budget systems will come with Core i3, Celeron or Pentium CPUs, which are good for basic tasks, but not heavy multitasking. Get a Core i7 or a quad-core processor for gaming or high-end productivity tasks such as video editing and 3D modeling.
  • RAM: 8GB is ideal for most users, but power users will want 12 or 16GB. 4GB is acceptable for budget systems. Secondary laptops and Chromebooks may have less.Storage: Unless you’re a gamer or a power user, 256GB of internal storage is probably enough. If possible, get an SSD rather than a hard drive, because it’s going to make your computer a lot faster.
  • Graphics: Gamers and creative professionals need to do some research and figure out which discrete GPU from Nvidia or AMD is good enough to run their favorite software. Everyone else will be happy with the built-in Intel HD Graphics that come with the CPU.

Don’t Miss: How To Get My Phone Screen On My Laptop

Dell Inspiron 17 7000 2

Why you should buy this: You want a large laptop that can still act like a tablet when you need it to.

Whos it for: On-the-go professionals and fans of versatile laptops and big screens.

Why we picked the Dell Inspiron 17 7000 2-in-1:

If youre looking for the best of the best, we suggest starting with the brilliantly designed Inspiron 17 7000. This is one of the few laptop series to combine a full keyboard, including a numeric keypad, with a 2-in-1 design that lets it fold back into a tablet when necessary. That adds versatility, but both modes are well-designed, with a good typing experience as a 2-in-1 laptop and a responsive touchscreen as a tablet.

Dell offers a variety of spec customization options, but the base model starts with a 10th-generation intel Core i5-10210U processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB PCIe NVMe solid-state drive . For graphics, options start with a GeForce MX250 GPU, and ports include USB-A 3.1, Thunderbolt 3/USB-C, DisplayPort, and HDMI 2.0. The battery wont last all day, so youll want to have an outlet handy, but at nearly 6 pounds, this is not designed to be a portable machine. If youre happy to set it up for use, though, the Inspiron 7000 2-in-1 is a fantastic 17-inch laptop.

How To Choose A 17

15-inch laptops vs 17-inch laptops

You can find portables in both sizes with robust CPUs, GPUs, and plenty of storage space. However, the two sizes do come with their own advantages.

If portability is a factor for you, a 15-inch laptop is always going to be smaller, lighter, and easier to carry around. And, unlike the smaller 13-inch models, it can still come with plenty of power. But, a 17-inch laptop will still have that bigger screen. And, even though a smaller laptop can come equipped with a powerful GPU, its thermal solutions wont be as well implemented as that of these larger portables.

What is the best resolution for a 17-inch laptop

Picking the best resolution for your 17-inch laptop will come down to a few things. Though plenty of the best ones come with a standard 1080p resolution which is more than enough for most people, your needs might be a little different.

If youre hoping to do some photo or video editing, you probably want to get a higher resolution so you can see what youre working on in its intended resolution. And, if youre getting one to game on and you like to play immersive story-driven or open-world games, youll appreciate getting a laptop with 1440p or 4k. Of course, its only worth getting that higher resolution if your portables components can keep up. That means having a solid discrete GPU to run your favorite apps or games at those higher resolutions.
