The HP Omen 16 has been newly introduced this year. The older Omen 15 still has not seen a direct successor. Instead, HP has fitted a 15.6-inch chassis with a 16.1-inch display. As a result, the bezels are now smaller and there are small differences in the construction of the case. Compared to last year’s model, there are of course also CPU and GPU upgrades.

First Impressions Out Of The Box

The HP Omen 15 has a sleek design. It measures in at 14 x 10.5 and is a very slim 1 thick when closed. The top of the laptop is carbon fibre and features four triangular sections with some textured panels for aesthetic appeal, as well as the HP Omen logo in reflective metallic red.

The Omen 15 weighs in at about 2.5 kg, which is fairly impressive in terms of its power and specifications. Among similar laptops in its price range and with similar features, it certainly scales toward the lighter side. I carried the laptop around in my messenger-style bag on a few occasions, and did not find it was much of a burden.

There are a few different configurations available for those who want to optimize areas like graphics, display, and processing power, but regardless of what variant you buy, there are several features that remain consistent.

The specifications of the HP Omen 15 mean it can play just about any AAA game you can throw at it, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. You won’t be breaking any records for framerates, but you can expect at least 30 fps in fully maxed-out settings across really demanding titles like Metro: Exodus, and a satisfactory 50-70 fps in most thematic single-player games.

Thanks to the high refresh rate of 165Hz, the laptop is better suited to competitive shooters and battle royale titles such as Apex Legends and Fortnite, and while the 3ms response speed isn’t the fastest on the market, it’s more than enough to mitigate any ghosting or motion blur.

Speaking of Apex Legends, with all settings maxed out you’ll get around 80 fps on the HP Omen 15, rising to 130 fps on medium. You won’t be getting GeForce RTX 3080 performance out of the RTX 3060 GPU, but as an entry-level gaming laptop, this is more than sufficient to play games at an enjoyable quality and framerate. Not to mention of course, that the Nvidia graphics card allows you to take advantage of framerate boosting DLSS on eligible titles.

Screen Flickering / Pwm

Considering that this is an IPS display, the perceived brightness level drops fairly drastically when viewed from extreme angles and perhaps even more than usual. However, this is barely noticeable under normal conditions.

Hp Omen 1: Battery Life

Our movie test came back with an average of 5 hours 22 minutes of video playback, which is sufficient for watching a few movies while traveling, and the PCMark 10 ‘Home’ benchmark hit 5 hours 50 minutes. Gameplay usage averages at around 4 hours, though this dips to 3 hours 25 minutes for demanding games.

There are some fairly mixed reports going around regarding battery life on the HP Omen 15 , but we saw these after conducting our own tests so our results are free from any outside influence. As a warning though, people have reported a more unsatisfying range of between 2-3 hours, but we couldn’t replicate this ourselves after running our original battery life tests, and that could be restricted to a model using a GeForce RTX 3070 GPU.

It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the laptop, but if you’re concerned, keep close to a power outlet so that you don’t go AFK in the middle of your Call Of Duty game.

Intel Quick Sync Video

Cooling Design And Thermals

The bottom mesh grill shows HP also did their homework on the thermal design. With the raised rubber feet and recessed honeycomb, the cooling fans will always have access to fresh air and can’t be accidentally covered.

Every environment and configuration will be different, but our test thermal results were as follows. The GPU maxed out at 49C when running on battery and 66C when plugged in. The CPU reached 56C on battery and 79C when plugged in by itself.

With both GPU and CPU pinned at 100% for a long time, the highest temperatures I saw were 56C and 61C respectively on battery, and 77C and 89C when plugged in. Fan noise was quite reasonable. Most of the sound when they ramp up comes from the air blowing through the fins, not the actual fans spinning. This gives the laptop a low “whooshing” sound rather than a high-pitched whine. I never found the laptop bottom or typing surface to be uncomfortably hot even after long periods of high usage. The airflow blows out away from the user, so you never feel the heat, just like a proper thermal design should do.

To stay cool while on battery and to preserve run time, the Omen does some pretty aggressive throttling. The GPU performance jumped about 3.3x and the CPU frequency nearly doubled when switching from battery to wall power.

The Omen line has been at the core of HP’s gaming laptop family for some time now. It packs high performance hardware in a form factor that you wouldn’t mind carrying around in public. Not long ago, we reviewed the company’s newest entry into the gaming laptop market, the HP Victus, and while it was a decent laptop overall, it did have some trouble spots that HP should iron out in the next iteration.

If you go to HP’s website, the Omen and Victus seem to share the same market space and are available in the same configurations. To someone new to HP’s product line, it could be confusing why there are multiple models for what looks like the same laptop specs. Like many current competitors, the HP Omen uses a 16-inch display. Hence the gaming notebook is reasonably portable and still offers a pleasantly large picture at the same time. Either Full HD or QHD can be selected as the resolution size. As for the processor, this comes in the form of an AMD Ryzen, of which the bandwidth ranges from Ryzen 5 to Ryzen 9.

Alongside the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070, which was used in our test for the predecessor HP Omen 16-b0085ng, there is also the AMD Radeon RX 6600M. This is what our test device uses in combination with the AMD Ryzen 7 5800H. In terms of performance, the gaming notebook is roughly equivalent to an HP Victus 16 or an MSI Alpha 15, which, like the HP Omen 16, currently cost around 1,300 Euros .

One subtle difference remains: Saving power is definitely not among its strengths. This had a few noticeable effects on our test results.
