How Can I Make My Laptop Faster

Use Readyboost To Increase Your Memory

How to make your pc/laptop run faster (3 simple steps)

ReadyBoost is a clever little feature that was introduced by Microsoft as part of Windows Vista. It essentially allows you to boost your system memory by using a flash drive as additional capacity.

Although its not as effective as swapping a traditional hard drive for a solid-state one or adding more RAM, ReadyBoost will give a little uptick to the performance of your system, particularly if youre using a low-powered laptop with only a couple of gigabytes of RAM. It puts aside a part of the flash drive memory for things such as caching, assisting often-used apps to open quicker, and increasing random read access speeds of the hard disk.

To use ReadyBoost, first insert a USB memory drive into an empty USB slot on the laptop you wish to speed up. A dialogue box will open asking you what you want to do with the flash drive. Choose Speed up my system using Windows ReadyBoost’. Another window will open and here you can select how much of the drive you wish to give over for boosting. Its generally a good idea to use as much of the drive as possible.

Once thats done, confirm the settings and the window will close. The drive will be automatically detected and used whenever its plugged in.

One last note: if your machine is fast enough already, Windows will prevent you from using ReadyBoost, as your system wont be able to see any benefit from it.

Tip : Turn Off Unnecessary Services And Widgets

Go to Windows 10 settings and turn off all background apps.

Disable unnecessary features of windows that you dont use like Cortana maps location and other background services. There are many apps like CCleaner and i0bit uninstaller, these can help you uninstall stock windows apps.

You can remove apps like maps, mail apps, etc. to get some extra space and performance for your system.

Make Sure You Have The Latest Updates For Windows And Device Drivers

One of the best ways to get the most out of your PC is to make sure you have the latest version of Windows 11 installed. When you check for updates, your PC will also search for the latest device drivers, which can also help improve your PCs performance.

To check for updates

  • Do one of the following:

  • If the status says “You’re up to date,” continue and check for optional updates.

  • If the status says “Updates are available,” select Install now.

  • Select the updates you want to install, then select Install.

  • Restart your PC and see if it seems to run better.

  • Sometimes an optional update, like a new non-critical driver, will be available that may help.

    To check for optional updates

  • Select the Start button, then select Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options> Optional updates.

  • If additional updates are available, select them and then select .

  • Restart your PC and see if it seems to run better.

  • For more info about updates, including how you can have them installed automatically, see the Windows Update FAQ.

For Windows Update troubleshooting info, see Update Windows and Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.

Prevent Programs From Running At Startup

Startup processes can be a huge nightmare! Think about all the time thats wasted when you boot up your laptop. With each restart, you must wait for a myriad of processes to complete before you can do anything. But even after thats done, they can use up so many resources that your performance comes to a slow crawl!

Some startup programs are necessary. For example, we always recommend keeping your antivirus going to stay safe. But everything else? There are many processes you can stop to speed your laptop up considerably.

Go into the Task Manager. You can do that by right-clicking the taskbar. Alternatively, you can press CTRL, SHIFT, and ESC keys together will launch it automatically.

Instead of looking at the Processes tab like earlier, head into the Startup section. Once again, the Task Manager comes in to save the day!

Take a look at the laundry list of processes in the startup tab and determine which ones are unnecessary. Deciding which options are unnecessary programs might involve some trial and error. Like we said before, some select tasks are necessary. When you find the ones you can live without, right-click it and hit Disable.

Dont worry: This process doesnt delete anything. It simply prevents the program from running automatically the moment you turn your laptop on. If you still need the software, you can run it manually.

Restart Your Pc And Open Only The Apps You Need

Having many apps, programs, web browsers, and so on open at once can slow down your PC. Having a lot of browser tabs open at once can also slow it down quite a bit. If this is happening, close any apps, browser tabs, etc., that you don’t need and see if that helps speed up your PC. If it doesn’t seem to help, restart your PC and then open just the apps, programs and browser windows you need.

    To restart your PC

  • Select the Start button, then select Power > Restart.

  • After your PC restarts, open just the apps you need, then close them when youre done.

  • Sometimes apps that were made for an earlier version of Windows will still run on Windows 11, but they might slow down your PC. If this happens after you open a certain program, check the software companys website for an updated version, or run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.

To run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter

  • Select Search, type troubleshoot in the search box, then select Troubleshoot settings > Other troubleshooters.

  • Under Other, select the Run button next to Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.

  • Select the program that youre having problems with, then select Next and continue through the troubleshooter.

Use An Ssd Or Install Additional Memory

Finally, you can dramatically improve the performance of your computer by increasing its memory and storage.

If your computer has a traditional hard drive one with spinning metal platters replacing it with a solid-state drive can make a world of difference. An SSD has the same kind of memory as a USB flash drive and it’ll allow Windows to boot several times faster, and programs to start in a fraction of the time.

Adding an SSD is the single biggest improvement you can make to a PC, and it can even make a bigger difference than upgrading to a computer with a faster processor.

In addition, if you use your computer for a lot of resource-intensive tasks, like photo editing, video production, or gaming, adding additional memory can help as well.

You should have no less than 4GB of RAM in your computer for Windows to run efficiently, but adding additional memory can improve performance.

    Clean Out Your Hard Disk

If youve got a bloated hard disk filled with files you dont need, you could be slowing down your PC. Cleaning it out can give you a speed boost. Windows 10 has a surprisingly useful built-in tool for doing this called Storage Sense. Go to Settings > System > Storage and at the top of the screen, move the toggle from Off to On. When you do this, Windows constantly monitors your PC and deletes old junk files you no longer need temporary files, files in the Downloads folder that havent been changed in a month, and old Recycle Bin files.

You can customize how Storage Sense works and also use it to free up even more space than it normally would. Underneath Storage Sense, click Configure Storage Sense or run it now. From the screen that appears, you can change how often Storage Sense deletes files .

You can also tell Storage Sense to delete files in your Download folder, depending on how long theyve been there, and set how long to wait to delete files in the Recycle Bin automatically. You can also have Storage Sense move files from your PC to the cloud in Microsofts OneDrive cloud storage if theyre not opened for a certain amount of time .

Heres how to customize the way Storage Sense works, and to tell it to delete old versions of Windows.
