Adding Your First Extra Monitor
The first thing you should do is to look at your computer. What ports do you have available? These are the most common display output slots you can work with: HDMI, USB-C, and miniDP.
When you have any one of these, your next step would be to choose a monitor supporting what you have. Most displays support HDMI, while newer ones have USB-C cables. MiniDP and DisplayPort technology, meanwhile, are usually found on Pro-level monitors.
It is pretty straightforward to add an extra display. All you need is to set up your new monitor, make sure it has the correct connection adapter, and plug it in. After that, your Windows laptop should detect it and start displaying your desktop automatically.

How Can I Tell If My Computer Supports Dual Monitors
Posted on by Madalina Dinita
If youre running more than ten programs simultaneously, a dual-monitor setup can help you boost your productivity. For example, you can take a quick glimpse at the taskbar and immediately find the program youre looking for. If you need to compare different sets of data from two different apps, you can place each app on a different monitor and get the job done faster. Or you can simply extend complex programs onto the second monitor to get a better view of the data youre analyzing. You guessed that right, a dual-monitor configuration is perfect for Excel users.
But first, you need to make sure your computer supports multiple monitors. In this quick guide, well show how to check if your machine supports multiple video outputs.
Configuring The Monitor With Windows
Extend or duplicate the desktop with a second monitor.
Right-click anywhere on the desktop, and then click Display settings.
Make sure the correct number of monitors displays.
If all connected monitors display, continue with these steps.
Two monitors might display as one, with 1|2 in the center, indicating the same screen duplicated on two monitors. To change to an extended desktop display, continue with these steps.
If not all of your monitors display, make sure the cables are securely inserted, and then click Detect.
If you are using a wireless monitor, you might need to click Connect to a wireless display.
Scroll down to Multiple displays, if necessary, click the drop-down menu, and then select a display option.
Adjust the screen resolution and orientation, as necessary.
For extended desktop only, match the monitors on the display to how they are physically positioned. To identify the monitors, click Identify. Numbers display on the monitors to help you arrange them.

Check The Graphics Card
First of all, you may need to make sure your graphics card supports multiple monitors. Normally, every graphics card provides at least two outputs, but you will need to check the graphics card properties on the manufacturers website, find your graphics card and check the specifications to see if it supports adding two external monitors.
For example, if you are using the NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, you can check it out on the official website, and click your graphics card, and check the specification, then you will see if it supports multiple monitors.
If it does not support adding multiple monitors, you may need to buy and install a correct graphics card before you keep processing.
Change Display Settings To Enable Second Display
To make changes to the display, press Windows Key + P that will open the Project menu. You will see four options:
All options are pretty self-explanatory. To connect to an external display and turn off the laptop display, you will select the fourth option Second screen only.
Laptop screen is always the primary screen by default. It will be disabled when the second screen only option is selected.

Adjust The Audio Output Settings
The advantage of using HDMI is that you can also stream audio through the monitor device. For example, if you are connecting an LED TV, it will have the capability of streaming audio in addition to video from the laptop. Just follow the steps below to enable audio through HDMI device.
Now you will get the sound from the monitor if it has a speaker or an audio/video peripheral.
For me this option is very useful as I keep my laptop running all the time. I have selected to do nothing when I close the lid while the laptop is connected to the power source. This helps me save power as well as use external monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse.
One thing to note here is that if you restart your Windows computer, it will detect and activate the primary screen which is the laptop screen. The secondary screen will automatically get activated and the laptop screen will be turned off on the logon screen. So if you have a broken laptop screen, it will be difficult to start the computer as the laptop will always detect its own LCD as the primary display and will try to activate it until the system is fully booted.
What do you do when you want to run the laptop with lid closed?
Use A Second Laptop As An Extended Monitor With Windows 10 Wireless Displays
James Clarke from the Windows team rolled into a meeting today with two Surfaces…but one had no keyboard. Then, without any ceremony, he proceeded to do this:
Now, I consider myself a bit of a Windows Productivity Tips Gourmand, and while I was aware of Miracast and the general idea of a Wireless Display, I didn’t realize that it worked this well and that it was built into Windows 10.
In fact, I’m literally sitting here in a hotel with a separate USB3 LCD display panel to use as a second monitor. I’ve also used Duet Display and used my iPad Pro as a second monitor.
I usually travel with a main laptop and a backup laptop anyway. Why do I lug this extra LCD around? Madness. I had this functionality all the time, built in.

How Do I Know If My Pc Supports Dual Monitors
The quickest way to check if your Windows 10 computer supports multiple monitors is to go Settings, select System, and then Display. Scroll down and check if the Multiple displays option is available. If this is the case, this means that your machine supports multiple monitors.
The good news is that 99 percent of modern computers support dual monitors or multiple monitor setups. This is because all the graphics cards manufactured in the last decade support at least two video outputs.
You can also check how many display ports there are on the back of your graphics card. Of course, ultrabooks usually have only two USB-C ports which means you need to use a USB-C to HDMI adapter.
Then, you may want to go to your GPU manufacturers website and look up your graphics card model. Check the card specifications to see how many monitors it can support.

Aligning Multiple Monitors & Best Use
When using a Windows 10 laptop with the most popular multiple monitor option ‘Extend,’ it’s important to align the displays. Display settings will show the virtual displays side by side and number them. These numbers can be displayed on each physical monitor’s screen by clicking the ‘Identify’ button. Aligning the numbered displays that appear in Display settings will make the mouse pointer movement track appropriately. Otherwise, the mouse movement may appear to jump to an unexpected position, when it reaches the edge of one monitor and appears on the next. To align the numbered displays, simply drag them so they match the physical layout of the real world monitors. Both horizontal and vertical placement can be accounted for. Each display can have a different resolution and orientation without any issues when using ‘Extend.’

Check Available Ports On Your Laptop
Then you may need to check the ports on your laptop. Generally, a computer or laptop should include any of these four ports:
Display Port can provide an interface with optional audio high-definition content protection.Digital Video Interface is usually color-coded with white plastic and labels.Video Graphics Array is normally color-coded with blue plastic and labels.High-Definition Multimedia Interface can connect all kinds of video devices and provide sounds through the cable.
You can check the ports on the back or on the sides of your laptop. In addition to the ports on your laptop, the monitors should have the corresponding ports as well. That will save your time and money to connect them. Otherwise you will need to buy an extra adapter, such as DVI to HDMI adapter to have them match.
If you dont have the match ports for your laptop and your monitor
If the ports on your laptop are not the same as the connectors in your monitor cables, dont give up hope. There is a workaround! You can try one of the methods below to continue:
- Use an adapter, such as an HDMI to DVI adapter. This works if you have two different ports for your laptop and your monitor.
- Use a switch splitter, such as aDisplay splitter to have two HDMI ports. This works if you have only one HDMI port on your laptop but you need two HDMI ports.
- Use a docking station, and it works in various circumstances.

How To Keep Your Windows Laptop On When It’s Closed

Solve Video Adapters And Usb
Dont fear if you have DVI and HDMI, HDMI and DisplayPort, or even VGA and any of the above connections. You can still connect multiple screens using a dual-purpose cable, such as DVI-to-VGA, HDMI-to-DVI, or some other adapter or converter.
An increasing number of laptops use a USB Type-C socket to complicate matters further, carrying data, video, and charging capabilities. USB Type-C is brilliant, but its not always obvious what the port on your laptop can and cannot do. Indeed, some devices only support USB 2.0 connectivity and power transfer and wont carry a video signal at all. In contrast, others offer USB 3.0 but wont let you plug the connection into a monitor. Alas, theres no way of telling beyond trying it out or checking the specifications for the USB controller hardware your laptop uses.
If you attempt to use that same cable to connect your laptop to your monitor, youll be out of luck. Again, theres no way of telling beyond trial and error or buying a specifically video-compatible cable.
Fortunately, cables are pretty cheap, even though USB Type-C is a relatively newer standard. If you need an HDMI to USB Type-C adaptor, For instance, you can get a low-cost converter on Amazon if you dont mind attaching a small USB Type-C to HDMI adapter to the end of your Type-C cable.
Ask Jack: How Can I Add Two External Monitors To My Laptop
Simons productivity has benefited from adding an external monitor to his Windows laptop. Now he would like to add a second, giving three screens in all
I have recently found that adding an external screen to my work laptop has really helped with productivity, but having visited a colleague who had two additional monitors, I now want that too. His laptop had two HDMI outputs so the setup was simple, but mine only has one. Whats the cheapest way for me to do this without changing my laptop?Simon
Any Windows laptop will support two screens at least, Ive never heard of one that wont. Supporting three screens can be just as easy, or much trickier. It depends on the laptop, the graphics card , the graphics drivers, and perhaps the amount of memory available. Theres no easy way to tell in advance. However, if you search online for your exact laptop, you may find that someone has already tried it, and this is probably the best guidance you can get.
Some laptops will support two external monitors if you can find a way of plugging them in. For example, you could plug one into an HDMI port and the second into a VGA port. This is not quite as good as using two HDMI ports because HDMI and VGA are different video standards. The two screens may have slightly different colour renderings, or other differences , which could be annoying.
Hub or dock
This particular range seems to be popular with Microsoft Surface Pro owners , but there are no doubt many alternatives.
