Different Types Of Laptop
The terms laptop and notebook tend to be used interchangeably as a general description. But you can break these down into smaller sub-categories, though they’re not always mutually exclusive.
For example, an ultraportable can also be a convertible which works as both a laptop and a tablet. Also, many devices that are designed as tablets can also work as laptops if you add a keyboard. Some are specifically designed for this, such as Microsoft’s Surface range.
The general term for a full-sized laptop that strikes a balance between portability and functionality.
These can vary greatly in overall size and specification processor speed, storage capacity, memory and screen size.
They range in price from low-cost budget models to high-performance productivity and gaming models.
Thin, light laptops designed for mobility are often described as ultraportable .
Maintaining a super-slim profile means they have to cut out some features such as larger connection ports and reduce the number of connection ports. The smallest models weigh about a kilogram.
Ultrabook is a term coined by computer chipmaker Intel for a special type of ultraportable notebook . Ultrabooks must meet specific criteria for various things such as size/weight, battery life, type of chipset .
Among their strong points is strong security and anti-theft protection built in at the hardware level.
Although the original MacBook Air is regarded as the inspiration for the Ultrabook class, it’s not actually an Ultrabook.
Which Cpu Is Best: Intel Or Amd Ryzen
The Short Version?
In our opinion, many non-enthusiast PC builders will be better off buying a processor like the Intel Core i7-10700 even if it costs a little bit more than its closest Ryzen counterpart . However, if you’re looking for more grunt or want to crank the settings menu in Cyberpunk 2077 all the way to ultra without breaking the bank, AMD’s higher-end Ryzen processors are the way to go.
Looking for a longer read?
Youll see many multi-page reviews on the internet with all kinds of benchmarks, complex overclocking scenarios and interminable technology-based theorizing regarding which is best but were taking a slightly different approach.
We’re taking things one at a time, and breaking them into discrete sections. If you want a big spreadsheet that shows the difference in clock speed between Intel and AMD Ryzen CPUs, we’ve got that. If you want a breakdown of the price-difference between AMD Ryzen and Intel CPUs, we’ve got that. If you want a benchmark-to-benchmark comparison, we’ve got that.
And if youre the kind of person who just wants to buy the best CPU in terms of performance, features and value, weve got you covered too. The following buyers guide is all about getting to the difference in a nutshell between these two CPU options and helping you understand whether AMD or Intel is going to give you more bang for your buck.
What Do You Need A Pc For
Before you can buy anything, you have to determine what you will be using the PC for. What kinds of games do you like to play? Are they graphics heavy? Will you also use it for school or work? Do you want to try streaming on Twitch? Will you be using programs like Premiere Pro or Photoshop? How much storage space do you want? Theres a lot of questions to consider!

How Do I Tell If My Cpu Clock Speed Is Good
Good question. Again, the cliff-notes version is that higher numbers are usually better. However, due to thermal restrictions, processors with more cores tend to operate at a lower clock speed. This is why having a PC with more cores might not always offer you the best level of performance.
So, whats a good clock speed look like?
Well, this is going to depends what youre doing with your PC. Some applications run single-threads, others are designed to utilize multiple. For uses where the latter is the case like video rendering and some gaming experiences, having more cores is going to offer up an enormous improvement over having faster ones.
That said, for more everyday things like web browsing, an i5 processor with a higher clock speed is probably going to offer more bang for your buck than a beefier i7.
In a hypothetical world where everyone could afford it, maybe wed all own PCs with the best Intel Core CPU available. However, in the world we actually live in, not everyone needs that high-end performance and not everyone can afford it. For most people, opting for a higher clock-speed over a higher core-count will do just fine as an alternative.

What Are Memory ‘ranks’ And Why Should I Care
Each dual inline memory module has two 64-bit interfaces connected in series. Each interface supports one rank of memory, so that a single-sided module usually has one filled rank, and a double-sided module usually has both ranks filled. Since the two sides of a dual-rank module are connected in series, one might not expect the added rank of memory ICs to improve performance. This is where interleaving comes into play. Interleaving allows two different operations to occur simultaneously, such as accessing data on one rank while transferring data on the other.
The memory controllers of most consumer processors support up to four ranks of memory per channel, which is why so many dual-channel boards have four slots and why so many quad-channel boards have eight. If every module used in these boards was dual-rank, the memory controller would be full.
How does one determine whether a module is dual- or single-rank? Specs may tell you, but you cant count on that. If not, physical examination is another way. A look under the edge of a modules heat spreaders would reveal how many ICs are used. Since the ICs on most performance-oriented memory modules have an 8-bit interface, eight of those make up a 64-bit rank.
Windows Mac Linux Android Or Chrome Os
Operating systems tend to polarise opinion. Ask a room of techies whether you should go with a Windows, Mac, Linux, Android or Chrome OS laptop or tablet and you’ll start a heated debate that will go for a long time but nobody will win .
All systems have their good and bad points, but it’s important for you to choose a side, because it affects your software choices and possibly your hardware decisions too. This is definitely the case with Apple products and Chrome OS in particular.
Apple’s macOS only runs on Apple’s family of computers, while iPadOS only runs on iPads, but they’re designed to work seamlessly with Apple’s other operating systems: iOS , tvOS and watchOS .
Chrome OS runs on laptops, mini PC desktops and PC sticks that are specifically designed for it, usually of a relatively lightweight configuration that is meant to be internet-connected most of the time.
Even outside enterprise users, Windows has several versions, with Home being the consumer version, Pro for more serious users and Windows 10 in S mode for lightweight laptops aimed at being an alternative to Chromebooks.
These days Windows and Chrome OS have a much greater degree of interoperability with Android, though not to the same degree as Apple’s tightly integrated hardware-software ecosystems.
Android is also outgrowing its phone-centric roots to also be seen as a stand-alone OS for tablets, most notably by Samsung and Lenovo.
How To Buy A Windows Laptop For Home Working
If you are employed by a larger employer, first check that they wont supply you a laptop in the interim. If youre lucky, maybe theyll let you choose one and pay for it. One youve established your options, you can start deciding what it is you want to buy.
The most important factor to consider is the performance of your laptop. We would never recommend anybody whos looking to do heavy office work with lots of spreadsheets to buy a laptop with anything less than the following specifications:
- Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3
- 4GB Ram
- This can cost as little as £400
Thats a minimum. For a very good experience, aim for:
- Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5
- 8GB of Ram
- Full HD screen
- Under 1.5kg

What Are Important Specs
The Central Processing Unit, or CPU, is the brain of your computer. It is the primary determinant of your computers speed and performance. The two most popular CPU brands are Intel and AMD .
The Graphics Processing Unit, or GPU, is essentially the CPUs cousin that focuses on rendering and displaying images or video. If building a PC, youll want a dedicated GPU, which means that it and the CPU each have their own RAM.
RAM allows your computer to think, and the more you have, the more thinking your computer can do at one time. Generally, 8GB is the minimum for a gaming computer, with 16GB being more than enough for most people.
Storage comes in multiple forms, although you will likely want a Solid-State Drive for your PC. SSDs are smaller, faster, and safer than a traditional Hard Drive. However, most people use both, as Hard Drives provide more storage space at a lower cost.
Get Your Laptop Screen Cleaned
Dust particles on your laptop screen are one of the reasons that glare occurs, so if you want to avoid glare or keep it to a minimum, you should clean your laptop regularly. Remember, turn your laptop off before you do any cleaning, and be aware of where youre spraying stuff! Also, remember to use something soft and avoid rubbing your laptops screen .
So, thats it. I hope you can use some of these tips to reduce or get rid of laptop screen glare. Its not fun to work while you have a headache or strained and/or dry eyes. Also, its important to take care of our eyes health and avoid problems where we can. Thanks for reading!

What Is An Embedded Multi
An embedded multi-media card is flash storage thats attached to a devices motherboard. eMMC storage is most common on tablets, but is featured on some laptops, 2 in 1s and Chromebooks. Its a great solution for smaller devices, although it doesnt offer the capacity and performance benefits that other storage devices do.
How Important Is Cache Size
Whenever your CPU finds that it keeps on using the same data over and over, it usually stores that data in a part of the processor called the cache. Cache is sort of like RAM, but faster since its built into the CPU itself rather than attached to the motherboard.
With a larger cache, more data can be accessed quickly. Unlike clock speed and core-count, cache size is without reservation a case of bigger being better. The more memory you have, the more your CPU has to work with.
Intels latest processors also rely on a feature called Smart Cache, which dynamically allocates shared cache to each processor core, based on workload, reducing latency and improving performance.
The 10th Generation Core i3 processors tend to cap out around 8MB of Smart Cache. In comparison, Intel’s Core i5 offer up to 12MB while the current crop of Core i7‘s pack in up to 16MB. This is clearly one area where an i7 outperforms a Core i5 or Core i3 processor.

Choosing The Right Os
Aside from niche systems like Linux, there are usually three main options when buying a new laptop:
- Windows 10
- Chrome OS
- Mac OS
Windows will often be your main pick, simply because it has the most options in terms of apps and programs.
There are downsides of course, as Windows is a resource-hungry OS that frequently slows down while installing large update files.
Theres no question that gamers or anyone using a laptop for business applications will want to go with Windows in the vast majority of cases, however.
If you mostly spend your time online watching YouTube videos and browsing social media, you may be better served with the Chrome OS. Chrome also now has access to the full Google Play app store, which radically increases your options.
..the Mac OS is a solid alternative to Windows if you dont mind learning a different system
Finally, the Mac OS is a solid alternative to Windows if you dont mind learning a different system. If you use music or video editing software, Mac is an excellent option, and they are also much less prone to viruses and spyware.
For the tech enthusiasts, MacBooks have a few features that Windows machines dont normally offer, such as high resolution retina displays and the nifty Touch Bar.
What Is Turbo Boost Why Does It Matter
The Intels Turbo Boost tech allows a processor to dynamically increase its clock speed as the need arises. The maximum amount that Turbo Boost can raise clock speed at any given time is dependent on the number of active cores, the estimated current consumption, the estimated power consumption, and the processor temperature.
To translate: Intels Turbo Boost monitors how you use your processor to determine how close the processor is to the maximum thermal design power, then raises the clock speed accordingly. Basically, it lets you get the best of both world when it comes to clock-speed and core-count.
Most modern Core i5 and Core i7 Intel CPUs will support Turbo Boost 2.0. What’s more, some offer the Turbo Boost 3.0.
This doesn’t replace Turbo Boost 2.0 but instead augments it. Intel claim that this enhancement works out to around a 15% increase in performance on X-Series processors.
So aside from clock speeds and core-counts, theres one another major differences youll want to note before picking between an i3, i5, i7 and i9 processor.
