For people with older, low-power machines who want a speed boost but don’t care about extra goodies, a couple of the tips towards the end do boost system performance at the expense of visual bling.

Note that you should beware of those “Speed Up Your PC!” ads for registry cleaners, which often lead to malware. Microsoft categorically does not support the use of registry cleaners for Windows 10.

What Makes Your Computer Run Faster

Several components of a hard disk drive can make it slower or faster, which makes your computer run slower or faster overall. For example, a hard drive can cause a computer to be slower because of the moving parts inside the hard drive, which results in slower read and write times from and to the hard drive.

Remove Unused Browser Extensions

If your internet browser is running slow, that might be because you have too many extensions running at the same time.

Removing extensions that you dont need saves computer memory, thereby speeding up its overall performance.

If youre using Google Chrome, simply right-click on the extension icon you want to remove and choose Remove from Chrome.

Simply open the Settings app’s Notifications & actions page to change the notification settings. If you have a lot of these, too, go through the list and you’re bound to find sources from which you have no need to be notified. The distraction savings alone can speed up your PC use, if only in terms of your perception of computing speed. An easy way to pause notifications is to tap the Focus Assist button in the Action Center. This also makes it easier to re-enable them later.

Ever since Windows Vista , Microsofts operating system has become cluttered with fancy graphics and animated flourishes that do little to improve productivity.
