Try Running The Windows Audio Troubleshooter
Windows provides an automated troubleshooter. It does not always detect the issue but may help provide a quick fix. Heres how:
Disable Windows Audio Enhancements
Next up are Windows 10’s audio enhancements. Audio enhancements are built-in Microsoft and third-party packages designed to make your system audio sound betterâor at least differentâin a variety of ways. However, these “enhancements” could be the cause of your Windows 10 audio issue. Luckily, they’re simple to turn off.
To access audio enhancements, right-click on the speaker icon in the System Tray and select Sounds to open the Control Panel’s Sound window. Here, switch to the Playback tab and double-click on the audio device you’re using.
In the next window, click the Enhancements tab. There, check the box labeled Disable all enhancements if it isn’t already, then hit Apply. If you’re having audio issues with multiple devices, repeat this process for each one in the Playback list.
While you’re here, it’s also a good idea to make sure the device you want to use is set as the default. Right-click one and choose Set as Default Device to do this.
Missing Sound Card Section
If you are missing the Sound, video and game controllers category in Device Manager, your sound card drivers may not be installed properly. Your sound card may also be disabled, malfunctioning, or unavailable. First, verify no conflicts or other devices are present in the Device Manager. Second, verify that the computer has a sound card and that it is enabled.
If this is an onboard sound card, you can verify that it is enabled in the CMOS setup.
If you have no adapters or cannot click the down arrow to select the correct adapter, close out of this window. In the Control Panel, double-click the System icon, click the Device Manager tab within Device Manager, and ensure there are no yellow ! or red X next to a device.
If you have either of these on any of your sound devices, remove everything under Sound, video and game controllers and reboot the computer. If, after rebooting the computer, you still have the same conflicts, double-click the conflicting device and refer to our Device Manager error codes section for additional information.

How Do I Fix It When There’s No Audio On My Pc
While the cause of no sound on your computer can vary, the solutions are similar. You can resolve most sound issues through the fixes below.
We recommend you follow the fixes in order, as they move from easy, quick fixes that resolve most sound issues to more specific solutions.
Check that the speakers are plugged in, powered on, and that the volume dial is set at an audible level.
Verify that the speakers are connected to your PC. Most connect over USB or a 3.5mm audio jack . Desktop computers have several 3.5mm audio jacks. The audio-out jack is often colored green. If it’s not, or the green audio-out jack doesn’t work, you may need to read the computer’s manual to find the correct output.
Check the volume and mute settings in Microsoft Windows.
Find and click the Speakers icon on the right-hand side of the Windows taskbar. It will open the Volume Slider. Slide it towards the right to increase the volume.
Alternatively, you can use the mute, volume-down, and volume-up buttons on your computer keyboard.
The Volume slider in Windows may work independently of the volume dial on your computer speakers. It is most often true on a desktop PC with external speakers. Be sure to check both!
Close software running on your Windows machine one by one. Begin with software that has a Window open on the Windows desktop.
Check if the computer’s sound is working after closing each problem. It will let you isolate any software causing an issue with your computer’s sound.
Laptop Speakers Turned Down
If you are using a laptop computer with no external speakers connected, make sure the volume is turned up with the controls on the keyboard. The volume controls may be buttons , or a secondary function of another key indicated with blue text. To activate these keys hold the key at the secondary function key at the same time.

Fixing Cortana And Microphone Problems
Windows 10s built-in vocal assistant, Cortana, can be given all sorts of commands through voice alone. However, thats no good if your audio isnt working properly. If Cortana isnt responding to you the way you hoped, you may have a problem with your microphone or lack thereof.
First, make sure that your computer has a mic so Cortana can hear you. A microphone is a standard feature for many of todays laptops and desktops, but it is not guaranteed. Without a built-in mic, youll need to use your microphone jack and an external device instead. These are the best headsets with built-in microphones you can buy right now.
If you do have a microphone, lets double-check that your Cortana settings are correct.
Step 1: Open Cortana by clicking the icon for it in your Windows search bar, and then select the Settings Cog icon in the bottom-left corner.
Step 2: This will give you several toggle options to control what the voice assistant can do. Make sure that the option for Cortana to listen for Hey Cortana commands is turned on. If she isnt listening, your voice commands wont work.
If you have a microphone and Cortanas settings are alright but the smart assistant still cant seem to hear you, its worth double-checking your recording device settings.
Step 1: To do so, click the Up Arrow in the bottom-right corner of your screen, next to the clock and date.
Step 2: Right-click the Audio icon and select Open Sound Settings.

If the computer was producing sound recently but is not now, you can try restoring Windows to a previous point when sound was working. If corrupt Windows system files are causing the sound problem, restoring Windows to a point when the sound did work should resolve the issue. An important aspect of sound on a computer with external speakers is that it’s primarily controlled by software. Therefore, users should verify the sound settings in the software are properly turned up.

How To Fix Laptop Speakers That Don’t Work
Some laptop speaker problems can be fixed at home without any special tools or expertise, and others require more in-depth diagnostics and repair work. If you want to try fixing your problem at home, follow these steps in order:
Make sure your sound isn’t muted. Laptops often include a mute button or shortcut you may have accidentally pushed, and you can also mute by clicking the speaker icon in the Windows system tray.
To make sure your laptop isn’t accidentally muted, left click the speaker icon in the system tray. If it has an X next to it, click or tap it to unmute. You can also try using the physical mute button if your laptop has one, or the function key shortcut if it has one.
Try a set of headphones. Plug in a set of headphones or earbuds if you have them handy, and try to borrow a set if you don’t. Laptops are designed to automatically switch from the speakers to the headphones if headphones are available.
If you hear sound from your headphones, then there is either a problem with the software or driver responsible for switching outputs, or there is a physical problem with your laptop speakers.
Check for audio driver updates. If your driver is out of date, it may prevent your speakers from working properly. The same thing can happen if your driver is corrupted, in which case simply deleting the driver and then running a search for new hardware will fix your problem.
