Defragment Your Hard Drive
Over time, files on your hard drive become fragmented. As your computer now has to check in multiple places for the pieces, it can run more slowly. The term defragment sounds a little dramatic, but it basically means putting those files back together so your system can run more efficiently.
In fact, its something that Windows 10, 8, and 7 do automatically on a set schedule. The default schedule is once per week, but you can go in and manually run it if you suspect theres an issue.
First, its important to note that you only need to do this if your computer uses a traditional mechanical Hard Disk Drive . A Solid State Drive works differently from an HDD, and there is no need for defragmentation. If you have both, only defragment the HDD.
Go to My Computer and right-click the hard drive though you may have renamed it). Then go to Properties>Tools and under Optimize and defragment drive, click Optimize.
Youll then get an Optimize Drives screen popup.
Note that in the above screenshot, all of the drives are SSD. These do not need to be defragmented. As in the image, Analyze will be grayed out for SSD drives, but will be available for hard drives.
Select an HDD drive and click Analyze to see how fragmented it is. A good rule of thumb would be to keep it below five percent. If its above, you can click Optimize to defragment the disk.
Windows 7: Look for Disk Defragmenter using the search bar and select an HDD under Current status.
Clear Out Your Startup Programs
If you have a large number of programs starting up whenever you turn the laptop on, pruning these back can free up some much needed memory. Bloatware extra software the manufacturer is paid to add onto the system before sale is often a major culprit for this, with many programs youll never use cluttering up your system and hogging resources.
How to stop unwanted programs from starting up on boot varies depending on your operating system, but it isnt especially complicated.
In Windows 10, its controlled from the Startup tab in the Task Manager. In earlier versions its done from a little utility called msconfig.exe.
In OS X, its in System Preferences, under Users & Groups. Each individual user has their own settings under the Login Items tab.
For Linux users its a little more fiddly its all done with bash scripts. If youre running a Debian derivative, the script you want to modify is probably found in /etc/rc.local. If your OS is some flavor of Redhat, you should look in /etc/rc.d/boot.local.
Removing unwanted programs entirely is again going to vary by system. Unless you really want to be using Nero DVD Burner or the Cyberlink Media Suite , its worth taking five minutes to remove it.

Select the Start button, then select Settings ;> System ;> Storage .
Your drives will be listed in the Storage area. Note the amount of free space and total size for each drive.
Note:;If your PC is not low on space, try the next tip.
You can use Storage Sense to delete unnecessary or temporary files from your device, which can also free up space.;
If you turn on Storage Sense, Windows will automatically free up space by getting rid of unnecessary filesincluding files in your recycle binwhen you’re low on disk space or at intervals you specify. The instructions below show you how to delete temporary files and how to turn on and configure Storage Sense.
If you can’t find Storage Sense on your device using the following steps, see the “Free up space with Disk cleanup” section below instead.;

To delete temporary files with Storage Sense
Select the Start ;button, then select Settings ;> System ;> Storage .Open Storage settings
Select Temporary files in the storage breakdown. Note: If you don’t see Temporary files listed, select Show more categories.
Windows will take a few moments to determine what files and apps are taking up the most space on your PC.
Select the items you want to delete, and then select Remove files.
You Need To Update Your Operating System
If you havent updated your OS in a while, you might be missing out on new driver updates and software patches. This can slow your laptop down and leave you unprotected from security vulnerabilities that hackers use to infect your computer.
Typically, Windows rolls out major feature updates twice a year. On the other hand, patches for improving security and fixing bugs are released monthly. If your laptop seems to be running slower than usual, make sure that your system is up to date.
The fix: To find out if you need to update your OS, click the magnifying glass icon in the bottom-left corner of your screen and type update into the search bar. Then click Open and select if there are any available updates for your system.
You will then be required to restart your laptop for the changes to go into effect. You can do this by clicking Restart Now when the update files are finished downloading.

Can’t Connect To Wireless Network
Symptom:;No Internet connection, frequent time-outs while Web browsing
Solution:;Make sure wireless is turned on, smarter software tools, make sure router is broadcasting network name
Part of taking your laptop everywhere on the go is expecting to be able to connect to any wireless network, whether in an airport, coffee shop, or hotel. But wireless networks, by their very nature, are finicky beasts. Some laptops come with an external button or switch, separate from the software settings, to enable wireless connectivity. Always make sure this wireless toggle is switched on. Also make sure that the network you’re connecting to is broadcasting its network name or SSID.
If you’d rather steer clear of networking issues altogether, or want a tool to help you troubleshoot without having to learn any lingo, download an all-in-one utility like Network Magic . It helps you easily set up and secure your network, complete with a comprehensive network map, as well as repair broken wireless Internet connections. Road warriors should consider JiWire’s Hotspot Helper , which will not only show where you can log on via Wi-Fi but also will protect your privacy while you surf the Web wirelessly. In addition, this utility offers secure e-mail delivery, just like you get back in the office.

What Are Dell Performance Issues
Knowing if your computer has performance problems is very easy, here I will tell you about the most common symptoms and how they can be generated.
It is very slow and unresponsive
This problem is strongly related to damage or physical wear on HDD disks. Laptops are common work tools and therefore and they constantly have to be transported from one place to another. It is important to remember that HDDs are extremely fragile components and any sudden movement, shock, or voltage variation can permanently damage them.
It keeps freezing now and then
Freezing problems are very common in computers with insufficient RAM. This is because when you open a program and your RAM is saturated, the RAM has to free up space to store new information and must perform this process with more frequency, generating a bottleneck and slowing down the rest of the processes.
It’s extremely slow to start up
Again, this may indicate that your hard drive is damaged. The reason why it takes too much time for an operating system to start is that it has not yet been able to finish the booting tasks, such as running programs, mainly due to low data reading speeds.
It runs hot quickly and overheats

Does Your Ageing Laptop Need A Boost We Look At The Software Tweaks And Hardware Upgrades That Will Give Your Computer A New Lease Of Life
Time heals all wounds’, apparently. However, while the author of this saying wasnt necessarily wrong, they failed to consider that it might not apply to everything for example, hardware.
While the average lifespan of a desktop PC is around five to eight years, a laptop-owner can expect even shorter than that: between three to five years, on average. Unfortunately, with tech, nothing lasts forever. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as this often fuels new product innovation which can make our life even easier. For instance, theres no use lamenting the demise of 3G when we are now starting to benefit from the faster and more reliable 5G.
However, those who have ever invested in the laptop of their dreams may believe otherwise, and its hard to let go of something which has worked so well for so many years. Costs, too, are a significant issue: many cant afford to splurge on a brand-new laptop, especially if they had only just finished paying off the previous one.
Nevertheless, its hard to ignore when your laptop starts getting increasingly slower. This may significantly affect productivity, as well as cause plenty of stress and frustration. That is why weve compiled a list of 16 ways to speed up your device if youre looking to extend its lifespan. Although you might need to purchase a new laptop eventually, these easy tips are likely to buy you some more time before you find a suitable replacement.
