Hello,

I have a HP Stream 14 that I use mostly for uni work. However I recently downloaded Origin to play previously bought Sims games.

Of course, there is little to no storage left on the laptop . So my question is: how can I increase my storage to download more games through Origin?

Sorry if there is a painfully obvious answer, but I wasn’t sure if a memory stick/flash drive would work for this sort of thing.

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query in this forum, it’s a great place to find answers.

I reviewed your post and I understand that you want to know how to increase the storage on your computer.

Dont worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted J

I would like to inform you that you need to use an external hard drive or a flash drive to increase the storage. There are no options to increase the storage capacity internally.

Hope that answers your question and you have a great day!

How To Get More Storage On A Laptop

Its quite common for computer users to max out their storage space. This may make the laptop to be slower than normal and affect the general performance. If this happens, you will need more space for your files. In this article, we will show you exactly how to get more storage on a laptop without having to delete important files.

Quick Navigation

Installing New Software Or Other Hardware

New software often requires more memory than its predecessors, particularly productivity applications, such as photo editing software, video editing programs, and games. Similarly, new hardware components like video cards, storage, and even the processor require sufficient memory to deliver their promised level of performance.

To make sure your system has enough memory, check all minimum hardware memory requirements and add more GBs of RAM to give your system the resources it needs to run optimally.

How To Upgrade Ram On A Desktop Pc

With an appropriate amount of RAM in hand, youre ready to perform a desktop memory upgrade. Heres how to upgrade your desktop with additional RAM:

  • Shut down your computer and wait for it to cool down completely.

  • Unplug all cords, cables, and accessories.

  • Open your computers casing. Consult your owners manual for specific instructions about your PC. Youll likely need to unscrew it, so be sure to remember which screws go where. They may not all be the same type and size.

  • Touch an unpainted metal surface in your computer to discharge static electricity from your body. This will help to protect your computers sensitive internal components from accidental damage.

  • Find your RAM. Your owners manual will help here.

  • Gently remove your current RAM modules. If your computer uses clips to keep the RAM modules in place, push them to the side. This should also raise the RAM module up, so you can more easily remove it.

  • Carefully insert your new RAM modules by placing the edge with the gold connectors into the RAM slot and pushing the module into place. Align the notch in the RAM module correctly so that it slides all the way into the slot. Only touch your RAM modules by the corners and edges not along the tops, and never touch the gold connectors!

  • Replace your computer case.

  • Plug all your cables and connectors back in.

Alternatively, you can also use the built-in lightweight feature part of the NT File System to reduce the storage usage of current files maintaining normal access without the need to zip your files. The feature is available to compress files, folders, or the entire drive.

Important: Using data compression can negatively impact system performance because it has to compress and decompress data on the fly. You should use this option only if you do not have another option or have capable hardware.

    When To Upgrade Storage

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to increase a computers performance is to remove a hard disk drive and upgrade to a solid-state drive. You can also upgrade your HDD or SSD to a larger storage capacity, Kingston Technologys consumer SSDs now come with up to 2TB of storage. Lets look at some instances of when to upgrade your storage.

    Short battery life

One of the best ways to rejuvenate any laptop or PC is to install an SSD. For laptops, its a great upgrade option because they are more energy efficient than HDDs. SSDs do not have any moving parts so they require a lot less power to operate and this lengthens the battery life significantly.

    Need to boost speed

Upgrading to an SSD can give your computer a significant speed boost, with boot times averaging at 10-13 seconds compared to 30-40 seconds for a hard drive. In addition, opening times of applications and files are typically significantly higher with SSDs than HDDs. The speed of your storage determines how fast your system can boot up, load, and access your data.

Running out of space for photos, music, etc.

Another problem that you might face is not having enough storage. If youre constantly running out of space for your files and applications, upgrading your HDD or SSD to a larger storage capacity is a great way to increase your PCs performance. More storage allows you to store more files and it will give you more free space for the latest applications or operating systems.

How To Upgrade Ram On Laptop

Laptop RAM upgrade is the most effective way to increase RAM on laptop. But you should determine first whether you should add RAM, and whether you can do that.

Check whether you should add RAM:

    • Type “system info” into the Windows search box.
    • Click System Information App from the result list.
    • Scroll down to find Installed Physical Memory and you can know the RAM size in your laptop.

If the RAM is below 8GB, I recommend you to upgrade it. If the RAM equals or is more than 8GB, you can choose to free up the RAM.

Check whether you can add RAM:

    Step 1: Check OS version.

    • Open File Explorer.
    • Right click This PC and choose Properties. In the System window, you can check whether the OS is 32-bit or 64-bit. If it is 32-bit, you can’t upgrade the RAM to more than 4GB.

Step 2: Check whether the RAM is sealed in the motherboard or there is an extra RAM slot. This needs you to open the panel.

    Purchase a RAM:

If you are sure you can upgrade RAM, you then should purchase a RAM. If there is only one RAM slot, you should replace the old RAM with a larger one. If there are two RAM slots, you should buy a RAM same to the old one, otherwise the old and new RAMs may be incompatible. Anyway, you may want to know the model of the old RAM. Here is the way:

    Turn On Storage Sense

You can automate some of this cleanup by heading back to the Storage page in Settings and toggling on Storage Sense. You can set it so Windows automatically deletes unused temporary files, as well as files that have been in the Recycle Bin and Downloads folder for more than a day or up to 60 days. You can also choose to move local files off your PC and to the cloud via OneDrive if they haven’t been opened for a specified period of time. I’m pretty good about emptying the Recycle Bin on something approaching a regular schedule, but I’m also very happy to have Windows track down and eradicate needless temp files and old downloads.

Free Up Space Compressing Installation Footprint Of Windows 10

How to get MORE STORAGE out of your Windows Computer

Compact OS is a tool designed to compress and reduce the footprint of the Windows 10 installation and apps on devices with limited storage. However, anyone can use the tool to quickly reclaim a few gigabytes of space when you do not have external storage.

Warning: This is a friendly reminder that modifying system files are risky, and it can cause irreversible damage to your installation if you do not do it correctly. It is recommended to make a temporary full backup of your PC before proceeding.

To shrink the size of the Windows 10 installation and apps, use these steps:

  • Open Start.
  • Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
  • Type the following command to compress the installation of Windows 10 alongside apps and press Enter:

    compact.exe /compactOS:always

  • After you complete the steps, the process will reclaim around 2GB of storage without affecting performance significantly.

When the feature is no longer needed, you can always revert the changes using the same instructions, but on step No. 3, make sure to use the compact.exe /compactOS:never command.

How Much Ram Do You Need

Assuming your current RAM is insufficient, how much RAM do you really need? Its possible to add too much RAM as well as not enough, so youll want to answer this question early on.

Consider the following factors when making your decision:

    • Primary use: What will you mainly be using your computer for? Intensive tasks like high-end gaming, video editing, and intensive streaming require much more RAM, so youll need at least 16 GB for smooth performance. For normal web browsing or word processing, 8 GB should be enough.

    • Budget: RAM isnt cheap. While you can find good deals for RAM online, its best to buy from reputable vendors with warranties and solid return policies.

    • Limits: Your PC can handle only so much RAM, and if you buy too much, you won’t be able to use it all. Read on to learn more about these limits and how you can find this information.

As a general rule, consider 4 GB of RAM as a minimum, but get 8 GB if its within your budget. With 8 GB of RAM, youll enjoy significantly improved performance. Dont worry about having 16 GB of RAM or more unless youre using your PC for more intensive programs and processes.

Clean Up Files You No Longer Need

The first step is to get rid of the common space-hogging culprits. These include unnecessary applications and a variety of useless system files.

Go to the Start menu, type disk cleanup in the search box, and press Enter for the screen where you can whisk these items away. By the way, you can schedule Disk Cleanup to run regularly in Windows Task Scheduler. Heres how:

Click the Start button, type Task Scheduler in the search form, and press Enter. Under the Actions menu, select Create Basic Task. Follow the wizard to enter a description and set a daily/weekly/other schedule, then type cleanmgr.exe in the Filename box to schedule it. That method runs Disk Cleanup at a set time but still requires your input. If you want to run Disk Cleanup in the background without your supervision, you can create a scheduled task to do this using the command line:

    • Go to the Start menu, enter cmd in the search box, and press Enter to open the Command Prompt.
    • Type cleanmgr.exe /sageset:1 to open the Disk Cleanup settings.
    • Select the types of files you always want to delete and press OK. This will create a Registry key to save these cleanup settings, and also run Disk Cleanup right now.
    • Then go into Task Scheduler as mentioned above , and when you get to the Scheduled Task program screen, enter /sagerun:1in the arguments to apply the cleanup settings.

Here are some other areas to consider for cleanup.

I use a Dell 15-5577 laptop with 8GB of memory for music production and graphic design. The problem is that its 256GB SSD is not enough to store all my projects. An external drive is not an option because I want everything in the same drawer and its a pain to carry it everywhere with me. I need help with how to swap out my existing SSD with a larger capacity one, say 512GB. While Im at it, should I also upgrade memory?

The Dell Inspiron 15-5577 was sold as an affordable 15.6in gaming laptop with an Intel Core i5 or i7 Kaby Lake processor and an Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics chip. It costs from £799 to £1,299 depending on the processor, graphics, storage and type of screen installed. It also has an Ethernet port, three USB 3.0 ports and a full-size SD card slot.

Reviews suggested the base-level screen was somewhat lacking and one said the 256GB SSD was slow. However, if your machines screen meets your needs then it is a good specification for your purposes.

Now you can get extra benefits from its ability to handle upgrades. You should certainly be able to do these yourself, with the help of the service manual and couple of YouTube videos.

Theres only one screw to hold the back on your laptop, so physically installing an M2 SSD and an 8GB memory module is a two-minute job. With some upgradeable laptops, it can take longer to get the back off.

How To Upgrade The Ram On A Laptop

how to get more space on computer

    ByMelanie Pinola26 March 2017

Whether your older laptop is feeling sluggish or your newer system starts chocking up when you have too many tabs open, adding more RAM could solve the problem. If your computer doesn’t have enough physical memory, it starts swapping data to your hard drive or SSD, which is infinitely slower than even the slowest RAM chip. While not all modern laptops give you access to the RAM, many do provide a way to upgrade your memory.

If you can upgrade your laptop’s memory, it won’t cost you much money or time. Moving from 4 to 8GB usually costs between $25 and $55, depending on whether you need to buy the whole amount or just add 4GB. And the process of swapping out RAM chips should take between 5 and 10 minutes, depending on how many screws you have to remove. Here’s how to upgrade your laptop’s memory.

    1. See How Much RAM You’re Using

Low memory is often the cause of bottlenecks on a computer, and can lead to not just slow performance but also stability problems. If you’re a power user–multitasking across several intensive programs or keeping 30 or so browser tabs open at once–more memory will likely help your system run more smoothly.

You’ll get an even more detailed view by clicking on the “Open Resource Monitor” option at the bottom of the Task Manager window and navigating to the Memory tab. Note the screens will look slightly different under Windows 7 .

If you’re close to or over the amount of physical memory, you know you need more.

Save Files To A Different Drive

If your computer has multiple hard drives or a partitioned hard drive, you may find yourself running out of space on one drive . Luckily, you can fix this by changing your default save locations for apps, documents, music, pictures and videos. To do this, open the Settings menu and go to System > Storage and click the link at the bottom for Change where new content is saved. You can select a partition or a drive — even a removable drive, like a USB flash drive or a memory card — that is connected to your PC to save files for categories including apps, documents, music, photos and movies.

    Store Files In The Cloud

If you take advantage of cloud storage via OneDrive or another service, you’re probably double-storing files and photos. Well, you don’t have to do this — all cloud storage services allow you to select which folders are downloaded and saved to your PC .

If you use OneDrive, here’s what to do: Right-click on the OneDrive icon in your system tray and choose Settings. In the Settings tab, check the box for Save space and download files as you use them. This setting will let you see the files you have stored in OneDrive from File Explorer on your PC, which pulls off the neat trick of showing you all of your local and cloud-based files in one spot. In File Explorer, you’ll see three different icons for OneDrive files in the Status column:

    • Blue cloud: online-only file
    • Green checkmark in white circle: locally stored file that might revert back to online when you run short on space
    • White checkmark in green circle: locally stored file that will stay put, no matter how short on space you get

You can easily move OneDrive folders and files to your PC and back again. To move a file or folder stored in OneDrive to your PC, right-click it and select Always keep on this device. To remove the local copy of the file or folder and have it stored only on OneDrive, right-click it and choose Free up space.

    What Is Virtual Memory

Virtual memory makes your computer think it hasmore memory than it actually has. Without it, programs that take up more RAMthan your computer has will not work properly. Virtual memory helps this bycopying data from your RAM to your hard disk to free up space.

However, using virtual data is about a thousandtimes slower than reading data from your RAM. This is why your computer may notperform as fast when using virtual memory. Under certain conditions, you mighteven run into an error message saying your virtual memory is low.
