What Is Ram And What Does It Do For Your Computer
At a very basic level, a computer is comprised of three main components.
Can I Add Ssd To My Lenovo Laptop
You can install the new SSD directly into the slot of your Lenovo laptop if it has two slots for hard drives. After restarting the computer, press F2/F10 all the time to enter the boot menu then set the laptop to boot from the new one. The SSD has a cloned Windows system, so you can do everything you want now without any restrictions.

Stop Running Background Apps
The next items that could be taking up RAM are your applications that are set to automatically run in the background. You may have used your computer for years before noticing some of these apps taking up your RAM storage. This can quickly exhaust your memory, battery, and data bandwidth.
To stop background apps:
Applications are often automatically set to run in the background of your device. This enables them to display notifications and update their software automatically. By turning this off on apps you dont use, you can save RAM storage.
How Much Ram Do I Need
The answer to the question of how much RAM you need always will come back to what you want to do with it. While opting for more RAM is always good advice, it doesnt answer the more specific questions of how much RAM is needed for specific uses, or what you can reasonably expect to do with the RAM your laptop already has. To answer these questions we performed some testing, looking at specific use cases, identifying the basic memory requirements for each and providing some hard numbers to back our advice.
To help you find the best answer for you, we tested for five specific use cases, each common but distinct in its memory demands:
Each of these uses is common, but has distinctly different hardware requirements and memory demands. We broke down each of our five use cases, finding the memory demands for both basic and heavy use, and matched that to common allotments of RAM. Want to edit photos, but youre not much of a gamer? Want to do some document work and web browsing but still want the option to do more? Whatever your mix of uses, we can give you a very good idea of how much memory will be enough to meet the demands of the task.

The Benefits Of Adding Ram To Pcs And Cheap Laptops
Even cheap laptops can benefit from having more RAM installed. This is especially true if you have a 64-bit system. And since nearly all PCs and laptops manufactured in the past few years are 64-bit theres a good chance you could experience the following benefits by upgrading your Random Access Memory.
How To Upgrade Laptop Memory
Before you start, you need to determine where the RAM DIMM or DIMMs are on your laptop, and how youll reach them. The bigger your laptop is, the more likely it is that youll be able to access the memory without disassembling it completely. The smaller and lighter your laptop is, the more likely it is that the memory is soldered to the motherboard and cant be changed at all. Ultralight laptops almost never have user-accessible memory.
Most laptops that allow user-accessible memory upgrades to do so either through a small access panel on the bottom of the case, or by performing some level of disassembly . Consult your laptops user manual or do some web searches to find information for your model.
Before you start, turn off your laptop and remove all cables, accessories, and batteries.
My ThinkPad T450s is pretty middle-of-the-road here: it requires me to remove the battery, take out eight different screws, and pop off the metal bottom to access the RAM. Other designs only require you to remove a single screw, then take off a sectional cover. I only have access to one DIMM slot, the other is soldered to the motherboard.
To insert a new DIMM, I have to remove the one thats already in the slot. To do this, I gently pull the two tabs locking down the DIMM on either side. The RAM DIMM springs up at a diagonal angle.
In this position, simply grip the card gently and pull it out of the slot. Be careful not to touch the electrical contacts, and set the module aside.

Why Should I Upgrade My Ram
Random access memory, or RAM, is the short-term memory portion of your computers brain. Your computer uses its RAM to temporarily house any data it needs right now, or that it will access in the immediate future. That way, it doesnt have to comb through all the information sitting on your hard drive. In other words, computers load data into their RAM for speedy access.
Thats why a PC memory upgrade is one way to boost your computers speed and performance. The more RAM your computer has, the smoother everything feels and runs. Youll experience faster startup times, more browser tabs with no interruption, higher FPS when gaming, more freedom to multitask with different apps, and an all-around snappier experience.

How Much Ram For Laptops
Most laptops come with 8GB of RAM, with top-tier machines packing 16GB even up to 32GB for the most powerful gaming notebooks. As previously mentioned, tablet and laptop needs are converging, but most users feel comfortable running more complex programs on laptops, which means RAM has a more important role here.
For something like a Chromebook, which mostly relies on cloud-based apps and provides very little storage space, you wont need much in the way of RAM and will be fine for 8GB of RAM when buying a Chromebook, especially since you can now use the to download Android apps directly on your machine.
For Windows and MacOS, however, you should treat 8GB as a starting point and think about bumping that number up to 16GB. Most of the best laptops come with 16GB for good reason. Windows 10, for example, consumes around 2GB of RAM before you even open an application. If you are doing a lot of graphic design work or are planning on dabbling in some higher-end gaming, you may want to consider increasing that to 16GB.
Youd only need to go past that if you perform certain tasks, like editing huge video or photo files the kind of thing youd normally do on a desktop. Most people dont use a laptop for such tasks, but if you do, buying enough RAM is crucial. Its more difficult to upgrade RAM in a laptop compared to a desktop, so buying what you need at the start is paramount.

Use Lighter Apps And Manage Running Programs
What if you really need to clear RAM on your computer, but the apps hogging RAM are necessary to your workflow? You can handle this in two ways.
First, try using lighter app alternatives when you can. If your computer struggles when you have Photoshop open, try using a smaller app like Paint.NET or GIMP for minor edits. Only use Photoshop when you’re fully dedicated to working on a project.
Second, pay closer attention to the programs you have open. Close any software that you’re not actively working with. Bookmark open browser tabs that you want to read later, then close them to free up RAM. Keeping a tighter leash on what’s running at once will help free up RAM.
Be sure to expand the System Tray section of the taskbar, located at the bottom-right of your screen, by clicking the small arrow. Each program that has an icon here is running in the background, so you should right-click and choose Close or Exit on anything you don’t need.
Google Chrome is in its own category here, as it’s notorious for gobbling RAM. See how to control Chrome’s memory usage for tips. If you work in your browser a lot, it might be better to switch away from Chrome in favor of another option that’s easier on RAM.
No matter what browser you use, you should check your browser extensions and remove any you don’t need. Every extension you add to your browser consumes extra memory, so getting rid of those is an easy way to reduce RAM usage further.
Introduction To Computer Ram
Random Access Memory, or RAM, is the unsung hero of the computing world. Computer manufacturers love to boast about CPU power, or the size and resolution of the display, or even more commonly in the case of laptops, how thin the computer is. Now dont get us wrong, these are all important specs, but savvy computer shoppers know to also pay attention to a lesser-promoted spec: How much RAM the machine has.
Why does this matter and how can you know what numbers you should be looking for? Read on, and we will tell you everything you need to know and it wont feel random at all.

What Does Upgrading Ram Do
Upgrading RAM gives your computer the critical resources it needs to temporarily shuffle data from the hard disk to the CPU to process it. Even the fastest solid-state drives are sluggish compared to how quickly RAM can get your computer the information it needs. Without RAM or without sufficient RAM for whatever it is youre doing your computer would become unbearably slow or not even work at all.
Generally, people add more RAM in order to:
Notice that all the reasons listed above directly relate to making your PC faster and more powerful. Thats the primary reason to upgrade RAM.

How To Install Ram In Your Laptop
After learning all about RAMs in our previous article, you might now be considering an upgrade of it. There could be many reasons why youd choose to update RAM and one of it is a PC thats becoming slow.
Yes! Old PCs can become sluggish especially when used with more modern operating systems such as Windows 10. The programs that are available at present are also becoming more demanding in terms of system resource.
This is the reason why RAM upgrades or adding more memory helps! But how will you do it by yourself?
What if you already spent enough on the RAM modules and nothing is left for paying someone to install them? This is the perfect time to learn some DIY and thats exactly what were going to show you in this tutorial.
Will More Ram Make Your Laptop Faster
For our laptop upgrade we added an 8GB stick of RAM to the existing 4GB stick, tripling the capacity and increasing the memory bandwidth by going from single- to dual-channel. With PCMark 8s Work Conventional benchmark, which measures standard office tasks like browsing and document editing, the results were negligible as seen below.
As we expected, its basically a tie between single-channel and dual-channel RAM for basic computing tasks that dont use a lot of RAM.
Those tasks simply dont use that much memory4GB is sufficient. Upgrading to 8GB helps in heavier multitasking cases. And for the vast majority of laptop users, once youre beyond 8GB, returns on investment are diminished. Thats why we generally recommend that people set low expectations for performance boosts from increased RAM.
SiSoft Sandra shows the extent to which the added 8GB module increased our theoretical memory bandwidth . But whats the practical upshot of that boost?

How To Upgrade Desktop Memory
Replacing the memory in your desktop is usually pretty straightforward. Youll need a Philips-head screwdriver to open the case, and thats about it. Note that these instructions are for a standard ATX tower-style caseif you have a more exotic case design, you may need to work a little harder or position the computer oddly to open it and access its internal components.
Remove all the cables and external accessories from your computer, then move it to a table or desk. Ideally you want a cool, dry work area that isnt carpeted. If your home is particularly susceptible to static shocks, you might want an anti-static bracelet as well.
Remove the screws on the back holding the access panel in place. Youre going to remove the access panel from the left side of the PC . On some cases, youll need to remove the whole cover. Then set the case on its side with the internals exposed.
At this point you should be looking down at the motherboard. The RAM should be easy to spot. It will be two or more modules sticking up from slots that are usually near the CPU, but more toward the front of the computer.
To remove the existing RAM, look for the plastic tabs at either end of the RAM slots. Simply press these tabs down until they click. The module should pop up slightly, and its ready to be pulled out. Repeat this step with all the modules you want to remove.
Then, just lift each module straight up and out of the slot.
Check Ram Usage With Windows Tools
You don’t have to guess what’s using your RAM Windows provides tools to show you. To get started, open the Task Manager by searching for it in the Start menu, or use the Ctrl + Shift + Esc shortcut.
Click More details to expand to the full view, if needed. Then, on the Processes tab, click the Memory header to sort all processes from most to least RAM usage. Keep the apps you see here in mind, as we’ll discuss more on them later.
For more information, switch to the Performance tab. In the Memory section, you’ll see a chart of your RAM usage over time. Click Open Resource Monitor at the bottom and you can get further details on this utility’s Memory tab.
The chart at the bottom will show you how much RAM you have free. Sort by Commit on the top list to see which programs use the most RAM. If you suspect you have a deep problem based on what you see here, see the complete guide to troubleshooting memory leaks.
