Before you start, you need to determine where the RAM DIMM or DIMMs are on your laptop, and how youll reach them. The bigger your laptop is, the more likely it is that youll be able to access the memory without disassembling it completely. The smaller and lighter your laptop is, the more likely it is that the memory is soldered to the motherboard and cant be changed at all. Ultralight laptops almost never have user-accessible memory.

To insert a new DIMM, I have to remove the one thats already in the slot. To do this, I gently pull the two tabs locking down the DIMM on either side. The RAM DIMM springs up at a diagonal angle.
In this position, simply grip the card gently and pull it out of the slot. Be careful not to touch the electrical contacts, and set the module aside.

As previously mentioned, tablet and laptop needs are converging, but most users feel comfortable running more complex programs on laptops, which means RAM has a more important role here.
For something like a Chromebook, which mostly relies on cloud-based apps and provides very little storage space, you wont need much in the way of RAM and will be fine for 8GB of RAM when buying a Chromebook, especially since you can now use the to download Android apps directly on your machine.
For Windows and MacOS, however, you should treat 8GB as a starting point and think about bumping that number up to 16GB. Most of the best laptops come with 16GB for good reason. Windows 10, for example, consumes around 2GB of RAM before you even open an application. If you are doing a lot of graphic design work or are planning on dabbling in some higher-end gaming, you may want to consider increasing that to 16GB.
Youd only need to go past that if you perform certain tasks, like editing huge video or photo files the kind of thing youd normally do on a desktop. Most people dont use a laptop for such tasks, but if you do, buying enough RAM is crucial. Its more difficult to upgrade RAM in a laptop compared to a desktop, so buying what you need at the start is paramount.

Use Lighter Apps And Manage Running Programs
What if you really need to clear RAM on your computer, but the apps hogging RAM are necessary to your workflow? You can handle this in two ways.
First, try using lighter app alternatives when you can. If your computer struggles when you have Photoshop open, try using a smaller app like Paint.NET or GIMP for minor edits. Only use Photoshop when you’re fully dedicated to working on a project.
Second, pay closer attention to the programs you have open. Close any software that you’re not actively working with. Bookmark open browser tabs that you want to read later, then close them to free up RAM. Keeping a tighter leash on what’s running at once will help free up RAM.
Be sure to expand the System Tray section of the taskbar, located at the bottom-right of your screen, by clicking the small arrow. Each program that has an icon here is running in the background, so you should right-click and choose Close or Exit on anything you don’t need.

As we expected, its basically a tie between single-channel and dual-channel RAM for basic computing tasks that dont use a lot of RAM.
Those tasks simply dont use that much memory4GB is sufficient. Upgrading to 8GB helps in heavier multitasking cases. And for the vast majority of laptop users, once youre beyond 8GB, returns on investment are diminished. Thats why we generally recommend that people set low expectations for performance boosts from increased RAM.

How To Upgrade Desktop Memory
Replacing the memory in your desktop is usually pretty straightforward. Youll need a Philips-head screwdriver to open the case, and thats about it. Note that these instructions are for a standard ATX tower-style caseif you have a more exotic case design, you may need to work a little harder or position the computer oddly to open it and access its internal components.
Remove all the cables and external accessories from your computer, then move it to a table or desk. Ideally you want a cool, dry work area that isnt carpeted. If your home is particularly susceptible to static shocks, you might want an anti-static bracelet as well.
Remove the screws on the back holding the access panel in place. Youre going to remove the access panel from the left side of the PC . On some cases, youll need to remove the whole cover. Then set the case on its side with the internals exposed.
At this point you should be looking down at the motherboard. The RAM should be easy to spot. It will be two or more modules sticking up from slots that are usually near the CPU, but more toward the front of the computer.
To remove the existing RAM, look for the plastic tabs at either end of the RAM slots. Simply press these tabs down until they click. The module should pop up slightly, and its ready to be pulled out. Repeat this step with all the modules you want to remove.
Then, just lift each module straight up and out of the slot.
Check Ram Usage With Windows Tools
You don’t have to guess what’s using your RAM Windows provides tools to show you. To get started, open the Task Manager by searching for it in the Start menu, or use the Ctrl + Shift + Esc shortcut.
Click More details to expand to the full view, if needed. Then, on the Processes tab, click the Memory header to sort all processes from most to least RAM usage. Keep the apps you see here in mind, as we’ll discuss more on them later.
For more information, switch to the Performance tab. In the Memory section, you’ll see a chart of your RAM usage over time. Click Open Resource Monitor at the bottom and you can get further details on this utility’s Memory tab.
