How Much Laptop Storage Do You Really Need
Apple doubled the base storage of both its newest MacBook Air and MacBook Pros to 256GB.
When buying a laptop, one of the most important decisions you have to make is figuring out how much internal storage you need. Depending on the amount, it can drive up the price of the laptop considerably. For instance, Apples latest MacBook Air can be configured with either 256GB or 512GB of internal storage, and if you get the higher-end model thats going to cost you an extra $200 thats a lot. Microsofts Surface Laptops, meanwhile, come in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB varieties. How much do you really need? There is no perfect answer, of course. But there are some handy rules of thumb and wrinkles to know about.
How Much Ram Do I Need
The answer to the question of how much RAM you need always will come back to what you want to do with it. While opting for more RAM is always good advice, it doesnt answer the more specific questions of how much RAM is needed for specific uses, or what you can reasonably expect to do with the RAM your laptop already has. To answer these questions we performed some testing, looking at specific use cases, identifying the basic memory requirements for each and providing some hard numbers to back our advice.
To help you find the best answer for you, we tested for five specific use cases, each common but distinct in its memory demands:
Each of these uses is common, but has distinctly different hardware requirements and memory demands. We broke down each of our five use cases, finding the memory demands for both basic and heavy use, and matched that to common allotments of RAM. Want to edit photos, but youre not much of a gamer? Want to do some document work and web browsing but still want the option to do more? Whatever your mix of uses, we can give you a very good idea of how much memory will be enough to meet the demands of the task.
What Specifications To Look For In A Dell Laptop
HP has quite the selection when it comes to laptops. However, we can be spoilt for choice and faced with all the jargon and technical terms, it can be intimidating to even look at a spec sheet. So, we have a little guide to help you understand a laptops basic functions so you can make the right choice for your needs.
There are four basic specs when looking at a laptop: performance, screen, battery life, and form factor. Lets take a quick look:
Probably the most important thing to consider, performance determines how fast the laptop can process data. It covers four specs: CPU, GPU, RAM, and internal storage.
- CPU or Central Processing Unit The brain of the laptop, where the majority of the processing is done. The processor works by diving data into several cores, which simultaneously execute tasks. The more data can be divided and executed, the faster a processor is. So, a quad-core processor is faster than a dual-core processor.
You may have read about i5 and i7 processors on laptops. These are chips used on processors indicating their generation. These are different tiers of CPU:
EVGA GeForceGTX 1650 Super, PNY GTX 1650
GigabyteRadeon RX5500 XT, RX580 to RX550
If youre looking for cheaper graphics cards, Nvidia and AMD also supply GPUs to OEMS like EVGA, Gigabyte, and PNY. These brands are great options if youre looking for a budget-friendly laptop build.

How Much Space Is In A Gigabyte
Laptops range in storage capacity from 128GB to a whopping 15TB however, the average amount of space for most average laptops is around 256GB. It is often difficult to determine how big a gigabyte is or how much space it takes up.
For reference, 256GB of storage can hold about 30000 average-sized photos. Small documents normally take up only a few megabytes or even kilobytes of space. So if you plan on using your laptop for light file storage, 256 GB is plenty of space and should last you the life of the laptop

External Hard Drives To Upgrade Your Storage
This is an affordable portable hard drive connects to your laptop via USB-C. It comes in Mac or PC models, so make sure to buy the right own. It’s available in silver or blue, as well in a number of capacities that range from 1TB to 5TB.
The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is a rugged portable hard drive that has a USB-C connection and is compatible with both Windows and Mac computers. There are storage options ranging from 250GB to 4TB.
LaCie’s line of Rugged hard drives are shock- and water-resistant and come in different models with various connections and storage capacities so get the one that works for you. This model connects via USB and is compatible with both Mac or PC.
The most important thing to know is that the amount of usable storage space a laptop actually has is much less than what is advertised, for two reasons. First, your operating system is taking up space. The latest version of macOS, , for example, takes up a little more than 8GB, while the latest version of Windows 10 takes up about 15GB.
Second, because user-facing specs deal in normal base-10 numbers instead of the less intuitive base-2 numbers computers actually use, hard drives are just always smaller than they are rated to be. According to Lifewire, for each gigabyte that you think your hard drive has, it has about 70.3 megabytes less of disk space.

How Can I Increase My Laptops Storage Space
I use a Dell 15-5577 laptop with 8GB of memory for music production and graphic design. The problem is that its 256GB SSD is not enough to store all my projects. An external drive is not an option because I want everything in the same drawer and its a pain to carry it everywhere with me. I need help with how to swap out my existing SSD with a larger capacity one, say 512GB. While Im at it, should I also upgrade memory?
The Dell Inspiron 15-5577 was sold as an affordable 15.6in gaming laptop with an Intel Core i5 or i7 Kaby Lake processor and an Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics chip. It costs from £799 to £1,299 depending on the processor, graphics, storage and type of screen installed. It also has an Ethernet port, three USB 3.0 ports and a full-size SD card slot.
Reviews suggested the base-level screen was somewhat lacking and one said the 256GB SSD was slow. However, if your machines screen meets your needs then it is a good specification for your purposes.
Now you can get extra benefits from its ability to handle upgrades. You should certainly be able to do these yourself, with the help of the service manual and couple of YouTube videos.
Theres only one screw to hold the back on your laptop, so physically installing an M2 SSD and an 8GB memory module is a two-minute job. With some upgradeable laptops, it can take longer to get the back off.
How Much Laptop Memory Do I Need
The amount of laptop memory needed by a laptop owner can depend on a lot of factors. Depending on the uses of your laptop, your budget, and the type of computer you are buying, the differences in memory can be vast. Whether your memory is for music, videos and other entertainment, or for school work or business work, the amount of gigabytes of memory needed can vary greatly.
For users filling their laptop memory with songs, television shows, pictures, and movies, the space may fill up fast. A memory around 125-150 GB may be necessary for users with large amount of entertainment. For MP3 players like the iPod and the Zune that offer 80 GB models, you can fill these with around 15,000 songs or a couple hundred hours of video. This is a lot of music and video for most users, but combining the media can add up quickly and may fill your MP3 player and come close to filling older computers with GB amount around 30-50.
Pictures on a computer amass space fairly slowly, and a computer of 25 GB can hold many thousands of photographs. Word files, likewise, generally take around 100 pages to even reach 1 GB, and so a computer with modest memory can hold many word documents, spreadsheets, or graphs.

Core Specifications To Compare
Once you have a general idea of what youll be using your Dell laptop for, you can start comparing models and specifications. Here are the features that are most important to compare.
CPU: The central processing unit, or CPU, is your laptops brain, and it has the biggest influence over how it performs. When youre looking at different Dell laptops, youll find mostly processors from Intels i3, i5, i7, and i9 series. Just be forewarned that as processor speed increases, so does cost.
Screen size: Dell laptops come in every size imaginable, from 11 inches to 18 inches. The size of your laptop screen defines both how much screen real estate you get and how big and heavy the laptop is overall. Theres no magic size thats perfect for everyone, so youll need to pick the size thats the best fit for your taste and your budget.
RAM: Random access memory is the memory that computers use to manage multiple tasks, so even if you get the fastest processor available, it wont really feel fast until youve got enough RAM to allow it to multitask. If youre buying a Dell for casual use or basic office work, get one with at least 8GB of RAM. If youre buying one for intense work or gaming, consider buying one with 16GB or 32GB of RAM.
Ssds Importance In A Laptop
The importance of the storage option that you have on your laptop has increased and is not certainly limited to its size. With the introduction of SSD storage options, a laptop can read and write data at a much fasterpace which results in the overall boost in the performance of the Laptop. Booting up your device, running applications happens in seconds.
Moving from a Laptop which uses a mechanical hard drive to a Laptop with SSD, can only help you realize the actual real-life difference that exists between these two storage options. We can go on and on comparing the speeds and performance of laptops with and without SSD, but until and unless you witness the difference in speed yourself, you wont understand.
Just to put in in simple words, we can say that SSDs are almost 5 to 10 times faster than most of the traditional Hard Drives included in laptops these days. Basically, even a slow SSDs are 3 4 times faster than the fastest and the speediest HDD.
Now, the only drawback that SSDs have, is the pricing. The more storage size you need the more money you will need to invest in this Storage option. When compared to hard drives, SSDs are quite expensive. However, there has been a significant price drop in the manufacturing costs of SSD in the last couple of years.
Now as we have some basic clarity lets dive into our main topic!
