Recommended Storage For A Gaming Laptop
A gaming laptop should have at least 512 GB storage if you are planning to install only a few games. But if you are planning to install several AAA title games or doing some serious video editing, you need at least 1 TB of data storage space.
For some gamers, even 1TB of storage may still not be enough, while for some 512 GB will be more than enough. It all depends on how much space the games you plan on installing need and what else you want to store on your laptop.
Many popular AAA titles sometimes require more than 50 GB. Therefore, having at least 1 TB of data storage capacity allows you to install several of these games before you eventually run out of space.
Below are some popular games and how much free disk space they require:
|Doom Eternal||50 GB|
As you can see from the table above, AAA title games take up quite a lot of space. Fortunately, you can easily upgrade the storage on most gaming laptops.
Generally, gaming laptops with more storage space will be pricier than those with less storage capacity. 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB are some of the most common storage capacities you will find in modern laptop storage devices.
Three Simple Rules For Buying A New Laptop
This is the time of year when friends, family members, casual acquaintances, and people in the street stop me to ask about buying a new PC.
What should I get? they ask. What do I need? Also heard with increasing frequency: Should I get a tablet instead of a laptop?
Loaded questions, to be sure, but not difficult ones. A tablet can take the place of a laptop if all you do is browse the Web and read e-mail. If you need to get any serious work done, whether for school or business or just everyday life, a laptop is still the smarter choice. It gives you a keyboard, a bigger screen, copious amounts of storage, and compatibility with all your favorite software.
So, what kind of laptop should you get, and with what specs and features? I can make this really simple:
1. Get at least 4GB of RAM.
Thats four gigabytes of memory for those who dont speak PC. Anything less and your system will run like molassessomething to keep in mind as Black Friday deals roll around. Many doorbuster laptops will have only 2GB of RAM, and thats just not enough.
2. If you can afford it, get a system with an SSD.
Thats short for solid-state drive, which has no moving parts and therefore runs faster, generates less heat, and consumes less power than a traditional hard drive. Youll pay a premium for an SSD and end up with less storage space, but how much do you really need? Most folks I know rarely fill up more than 100GB.
3. Try before you buy.
One more rule.
What Is A Good Cas Latency For Ram
CAS latency is the number of clock cycles a RAM stick takes to access a set of data. For RAM sticks with identical speeds and chip versions, lower latency is better. While DDR3 generally has lower latencies than DDR4, the latter compensates with much higher speeds that deliver better performance.
Once you understand what RAM capacity, speed, and latency are, heres how to find out how much memory your current computer has:

How Much Storage Do I Need On My Laptop
Looking for a new laptop? You may be wondering, How much storage space do I need? When looking for a new laptop, there are so many things to consider and look at. Should you get a laptop with 1TB of space? How much is 1TB, really? Is it too much or too little?
Then theres whether or not to get the laptop with an HDD or an SSD . Whats the difference? Does it matter?
How much storage really depends on what you use this for. For most people, a drive under 256 GB will be enough, for gaming or photo/video editing purpose, a 1TB plus will be preferred.
Basic documents and a few family photos dont take up that much space whereas AAA games can take up several gigabytes of space.
How Much Space Should Be Allocated For C Drive On Windows 10

Upgrading Your Ram Can Be Easy And Inexpensive
RAM isnt that expensive, and its the easiest component to upgrade in a desktop PC laptops, too, in many cases. Buying a generous amount is wise, but dont go crazy. Theres not much reason for a gamer to exceed 32GB for now, and no reason to exceed 16GB if all you want to do is watch Netflix.
If your system does eventually become restricted by RAM, you can just add more. This is a good idea even if you dont feel comfortable upgrading yourself, as the charge for installing RAM at your local PC store should hover around $40 to $60.
What Is Ram And How Does It Work
Lets start with the most basic elements of the question. RAM is where data is stored before processing. RAM stands for Random Access Memory, and it consists of dynamic memory chips that can be written and rewritten with data very quickly. Unlike your hard drive, however, the memory used for RAM is also volatile, meaning that it only holds onto that data while the chip is powered, so its not designed to hold information long term.
Essentially, RAM is the memory that actually lets you work with the data needed to run programs and open files. Whenever your computer loads a program or opens a file, it opens up that data in RAM. Even your operating system uses RAM when its running. If you want to run a program, it pulls the data from long-term storage on your hard drive to short-term storage in RAM, where it can be accessed quickly enough for smooth operation.
This flow of data between the disk and the RAM is controlled by the computer, which manages the writing of data to physical locations on the memory chip, and that it needs a certain amount of free space to function. For each program you run, it will actively use some of the space for in-use memory and allocate some of the available space as standby memory, essentially reserved space for potential operations.

Is 8 Gb Ram Enough For 4k Editing
When dealing with 720p or lower resolution video, 8 GB of RAM is sufficient. The bare minimum is 8 GB.
So, if youre just beginning out there as a video editor and arent working on large projects, you may get by with just 8 GB of RAM.
As you may have seen, Premiere was only consuming 4 GB of RAM on one of my relatively small tasks.
Check The Quality Of Your Video And Music Streaming
Streaming movies in HD on Netflix takes three times as much data as streaming in SD. If youre subscribed to the top-tier plan from Netflix and you stream in 4K, youll use seven times the amount of data that SD streaming uses. You can easily change your streaming quality in the settings of your account.
To change your data settings for Netflix on a laptop, go to the home screen and click the user icon in the top right corner. Select Account from the drop down menu. Select Playback Settings, which will be towards the bottom of the page under the My Profile section. Youll be able to select the data usage from this screen.
You can also change the quality of streaming for your music. Spotify has low, normal, high and very high streaming quality options that you can access in your account settings. Keep in mind that streaming music will take a lot less data than streaming video, but if you have music playing in the background all day, it can still add up. You can also change the quality of the music that you download to save data.
To change the streaming quality of your music on Spotify, go to the home screen, which is under home icon on the bottom left of the screen. Click the gear icon in the top left corner. Once in your settings, scroll down to music quality. You can then select the quality of streaming you want from the menu.

What Happens If You Go Over Your Data Cap
The consequences of going over your data cap vary by provider. Typically, one of two things will happen:
How To Buy More Ram
RAM modules take up precious space, so laptops are typically engineered with only two RAM slots, and both are usually occupied by existing memory when you buy it. This means that a laptop that comes from the factory with 4GB of memory, likely has two 2GB memory modules installed. To upgrade to 8GB, you cant just buy 4GB of RAM. Youll need to remove the existing two 2GB modules and replace them with two 4GB modules, which forces you discard, or try to sell the now-useless 2GB modules.
Desktops often have three or more slots, of which only two are generally in use when the computer ships, making it easier and less wasteful when it comes to upgrades. This is why we generally advise that you buy a laptop that already comes with the amount of RAM you think youll need, instead of relying on the ability to upgrade at a later date.

Is 8 Gb Of Ram Enough
With 8 GB of RAM, you will have enough memory to run several programs at once. You can open lots of browser tabs at once, use photo or video editing programs, stream content, and play mid-to-high-end games.
Many Windows 10 and macOS computers or laptops come with 8 GB of memory installed these days. So, 8 GB of memory should be more than enough to run most productivity programs. Its also the minimum amount of memory recommended by Adobe to run Creative Cloud programs like Photoshop.
While 8 GB of RAM is more than enough for most people, you can easily use it up if you have dozens of tabs open on your web browser, and you are running several programs at the same time. For example, we were used up more than 8 GB of memory on a laptop by opening 50 tabs in Chrome while running Photoshop, PowerPoint, Word, and Spotify at once.
Some newer games will also use up to 8 GB of RAM all on their own. For example, Cyberpunk 2077 will require at least 8 GB of memory to run when it comes out. That means you might experience major lag when trying to run the game if you have any other programs running in the background.
How Much Ram For Laptops
Most laptops come with 8GB of RAM, with top-tier machines packing 16GB even up to 32GB for the most powerful gaming notebooks. As previously mentioned, tablet and laptop needs are converging, but most users feel comfortable running more complex programs on laptops, which means RAM has a more important role here.
For something like a Chromebook, which mostly relies on cloud-based apps and provides very little storage space, you wont need much in the way of RAM and will be fine for 8GB of RAM when buying a Chromebook, especially since you can now use the to download Android apps directly on your machine.
For Windows and MacOS, however, you should treat 8GB as a starting point and think about bumping that number up to 16GB. Most of the best laptops come with 16GB for good reason. Windows 10, for example, consumes around 2GB of RAM before you even open an application. If you are doing a lot of graphic design work or are planning on dabbling in some higher-end gaming, you may want to consider increasing that to 16GB.
Youd only need to go past that if you perform certain tasks, like editing huge video or photo files the kind of thing youd normally do on a desktop. Most people dont use a laptop for such tasks, but if you do, buying enough RAM is crucial. Its more difficult to upgrade RAM in a laptop compared to a desktop, so buying what you need at the start is paramount.

Confusions About Laptop Storage
One of the most common confusions with storage typically comes with confusion about RAM. RAM, which stands for Random Access Memory, is the short term memory of your laptop. When you load a program, it will be moved from your storage to the RAM so this it can be easily accessed, and will run faster.
Although the RAM is technically somewhere programs are stored on a laptop, this is only temporary. Your RAM is volatile, which means that it clears when you turn your laptop off. So, nothing is going to be saved there permanently.
When were referring to laptop storage nowadays, in most cases we are talking about SSD, which stands for solid state drive. This is where all of your programs and media files will live when your laptop is switched off.
All of your open programs will close when you switch the device off, as it is a non-volatile form of storage. This means that it saves things even without being powered, which is obviously pretty important. But what other types of laptop storage are there? well, lets take a quick look.
Random Access Memory An Overview:
Random Access Memory or RAM is a temporary memory that accesses data in a random order. These devices are used as the main memory in computer systems. RAMs are the expensive form of data storage devices but their faster access to data outweighs the cost. A key function of this dynamic memory is to read and write data as long the power is connected. It stores the input data in a temporary manner. The processor then accesses the data from RAM for further processing.
RAM is both used for storing the information temporarily and other massive amounts of non-random data such as the Hard Disk Drive . Depending on the usage requirements, every type of personal computer uses a certain amount of Random Access Memory for faster access to data. The storage capacity of RAM is directly proportional to CPU performance. Higher memories improve efficiency of computers and enhance system capabilities during routine processing of information.

Is 1 Terabyte A Lot For Internet
Most users will be fine with 1 TB of monthly data. But if you have kids, family members, or roommates who use your internet for Netflix streaming sessions, keep an eye on your monthly usage. If youre regularly breaking that terabyte marker, it might be time to find an ISP with unlimited data plans.

How Much Ram Do I Need
The answer to the question of how much RAM you need always will come back to what you want to do with it. While opting for more RAM is always good advice, it doesnt answer the more specific questions of how much RAM is needed for specific uses, or what you can reasonably expect to do with the RAM your laptop already has. To answer these questions we performed some testing, looking at specific use cases, identifying the basic memory requirements for each and providing some hard numbers to back our advice.
To help you find the best answer for you, we tested for five specific use cases, each common but distinct in its memory demands:
Each of these uses is common, but has distinctly different hardware requirements and memory demands. We broke down each of our five use cases, finding the memory demands for both basic and heavy use, and matched that to common allotments of RAM. Want to edit photos, but youre not much of a gamer? Want to do some document work and web browsing but still want the option to do more? Whatever your mix of uses, we can give you a very good idea of how much memory will be enough to meet the demands of the task.
