We also ran some quick tests on some oldies-but-goodies that still offer an enjoyable AAA gaming experience. These legacy tests include runs of Tomb Raider , Bioshock: Infinite, and Sleeping Dogs.
On these tests, because recent AMD cards stumble at getting competitively high frame rates with legacy games, Nvidia has walked away with the results in this section for going on three years now. If you play games that only support older versions of DirectX, your safest bet remains Big Green’s GeForce cards.

How Much Does It Cost To Build A Cheap Gamer Pc

Solid But Needs More Gpu Power For The Money
The IdeaPad Gaming 3i starts strong with a sturdy and restrained physical build, but it doesn’t hold up as the best value on the graphics-performance side. It’s not a bad laptop, just tough to recommend in a competitive field. At this price, the MSI Bravo 15 is our Editors’ Choice for a superior value, while the MSI GL65 9SC and Acer Predator Helios 300 are our top picks at the lower and higher ends of entry-level pricing, respectively.

Geforce Rtx 3050 Test Results: Recent Aaa Games
For the following real-world games, we typically benchmark using the highest-quality preset and, if available, DirectX 12.
In many of the AAA tests we ran, the RTX 3050 straddled an odd line where it was regularly pushing above the 1080p/60fps minimum barrier we were expecting out of it, but short of the 1080p/120fps we were hoping for it. Overall, you can expect a 60fps experience with a few settings turned down, but those looking for a high-refresh AAA experience will want to look toward step-up options like the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti instead.
I’ve made the argument in the past that frame-boosting features like DLSS are far more impactful for gamers at the bottom of the stack rather than the top. Having the option to enable modes like “Ultra-Performance” on titles like Death Stranding that could prove too demanding for cards at this power tier might mean the difference between a smooth 60fps experience and a jagged 30fps slideshow on low-end GPUs.
Here, DLSS pushed the RTX 3050 to get nearly as many frames in our 4K test trial as the Radeon RX 6500 XT did in 1440p. It also pushed the game to just over 101fps in 1080p, a 20% increase in performance overall versus the same test without DLSS on.
The card’s 4K performance was mostly under 30fps through most of the titles we tested, so this is not a card for 4K play. It was close enough in some runs, once again, to give AMD and the RX 6600 a reason to check its rearview mirrors.

Is A Gaming Laptop Better Than A Console
This question is like asking if a pizza is better than a burger. They are both great machines that can deliver a solid gaming experience. If you want a stand-alone gaming station with better multiplayer support, the gaming console is your best bet.
But if you are in a situation where you need both a laptop and a gaming console, then going for the gaming laptop is a wiser decision. They offer you portability and can serve a dozen more purposes other than running top-quality games.
The hardware cost is almost cut in half on a console, but it doesnt offer anything besides a rich gaming-focused experience. Ultimately, it boils down to your personal preference and purpose.

Finally, we come to the cabinets known as tower. They are often so large that they wont fit on top of a desk without hanging off the front or back. Some are so tall they wont even fit under a desk.
If youre serious about gaming, the graphics card is where you should pay the most attention. It is the most important component for beautifying your games, throwing high frame rates and making higher resolutions possible.
Those interested in 4K gaming or over 100 f/s , anything other than simple Esports games should look higher and dig deeper into their pockets. High-end graphics cards will set you back a lot, going well over $1,000 in some cases. At 4K, Nvidias RTX 3080 and AMDs 6800 XT are the best options.
An often confusing element of graphics cards is video memory . Its easy to figure out how much RAM a computer needs, but for GPUs its a little harder to determine.

Are Gaming Laptops Good For Work
A gaming laptop is still a laptop and can do everything that a laptop computer can do that includes work. In fact, even a gaming laptop can offer some advantages: Faster processors and increased RAM will make all of your non-gaming software run noticeably faster, and graphical work such as video editing and rendering will go much more quickly with a dedicated graphics card. Even if you mostly use your PC for work first and only light gaming, it might be worth it to shell out a little more cash for a gaming laptop for the better hardware youll be getting.
Productivity And Media Tests
PCMark 10 and 8 are holistic performance suites developed by the PC benchmark specialists at UL . The PCMark 10 test we run simulates different real-world productivity and content-creation workflows. We use it to assess overall system performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheeting, Web browsing, and videoconferencing. PCMark 8, meanwhile, has a storage subtest that we use to assess the speed of the system’s boot drive. Both yield a proprietary numeric score higher numbers are better.
All five notebooks hurdled the 4,000-point line that indicates excellent productivity in PCMark 10, with the HP and MSI leading the way they may not set frame rate records when gaming but they’re aces at Microsoft Office and Google Docs. PCMark 8’s storage exercise is cake for today’s speedy SSDs.
Next is Maxon’s CPU-crunching Cinebench R15 test, which is fully threaded to make use of all available processor cores and threads. Cinebench stresses the CPU rather than the GPU to render a complex image. The result is a proprietary score indicating a PC’s suitability for processor-intensive workloads.
Cinebench is often a good predictor of our Handbrake video editing benchmark, in which we put a stopwatch on systems as they transcode a brief movie from 4K resolution down to 1080p. It, too, is a tough test for multi-core, multi-threaded CPUs lower times are better.

How Many Watts My Laptop Uses A Real World Test
Using an energy monitor / smart plug , I tested the actual power consumption of my ASUS VivoBook 14 laptop.
How many watts the ASUS VivoBook uses:
- 0.33 watts in Off mode.
- 3.89 watts in Sleep mode.
- 19.6 watts in Active mode while writing on Google Docs.
- 21.5 watts in Active mode while streaming YouTube.
- 45 watts at max power consumption, according to the manufacturer .
I obviously didnt complete these tests under the standardized test conditions required to get ENERGY STAR certification I was just curious.
While I was at it, I was curious about how many watts the charger uses while its plugged into the outlet but not into the laptop. Lets take a look at the results of this test next.
How many watts does a laptop charger use
Laptop chargers can continue to use electricity when theyre plugged into the outlet and not plugged into the laptop.
However, the amount of electricity is tiny a fraction of a watt.
Modern chargers tend to be more efficient, reducing and, in many cases, eliminating the wastage.
In my case, the laptop charger I tested didnt consume any electricity when it was plugged into the outlet and not the laptop.
However, a bit of a disclaimer is required. My energy monitor only measures to 2 decimal places of 1 watt. So the charger could be consuming 100ths of a watt, but the energy monitor cannot pick that up.
When the charger is plugged into the laptop, power is consumed. This is the Off mode mentioned above, where 0.33 watts per was being consumed.

Not All Gaming Laptops Cost Thousands And We’ve Tested Some Great Models If You’re On A Tight Budget These Are The Best Cheap Gaming Laptops
ByChris Martin, Reviews Editor| 08 Nov 2021
Gaming laptops are typically very expensive but there are some great options if you’re on a tight budget and don’t mind some compromise in certain places. Here we review and rank the best cheap gaming laptops.
There are various reasons that a lot of gaming laptops are eye-wateringly expensive but they dont have to cost the earth. While you are paying for high-end components like the processor and graphics card, you might also be paying for a brand name or things like wafer-thin portable design.
Dont fret though. These affordable models might not be the most eye-catching or featherweight but, sacrifice is necessary. What they will do is provide you with the performance to enjoy gaming, while still leaving you with enough dosh left over to buy some games.
Were setting our price cap at £1,000/US$1,000 here but some will be available for a lot less than that. Under £500/US$500 is desirable but unlikely as the key components like a proper graphics card are just too expensive. We may also include the odd laptop that goes beyond the limit if its only just over.
If you really are strapped for cash and looking for the best gaming laptop under £500/US$500 then check out our budget laptop chart, which has that exact price limit, and look for models with a discrete graphics card like an Nvidia MX. They will be able to handle some less demanding games.
