The Laptop Studio Is A Multimedia Monster
The Surface Laptop Studios display doesnt just contort itself in all kinds of cool ways its also a real looker, offering vibrant colors and sharp detail whether youre churning out work, doing some drawing or bingeing Netflix.
The Studios 14.4-inch, 2400 x 1600 screen was an excellent canvas for watching an 8K nature video on YouTube the blue skies and lush grass popped off the screen with rich and lifelike hues, and we could make out every whisker and scar on a lions face during a close-up. This impressive image quality is complemented by a zippy 120Hz refresh rate, which essentially means the display is twice as smooth as what youll find on many cheaper mainstream laptops.
There are lots of benefits to a 120Hz display scrolling through webpages and doodling in Microsoft Whiteboard felt noticeably smoother and more responsive than it did on our 60Hz Surface Go 3, and we were able to enjoy silky 120 frame-per-second gameplay in the fast-moving shooter action of Splitgate.
And as with all Surface laptops, the Laptop Studios screen has a 3:2 aspect ratio, which is uniquely tall compared to most notebooks and lets you see more of a webpage or document without having to scroll. The difference in real estate was pretty noticeable when we put it next to our MacBook Pro, and the extra vertical space may be useful for folks who spend lots of time in spreadsheets.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 Audio
I was worried about the Surface Laptop 3’s speakers’ placement, hidden beneath the keyboard, but my doubts disappeared the moment Billie Eilish’s smooth, clear voice filled our lab. The slow, rhythmic drums in the Grammy Award-winning artist’s song “Idontwannaobeyouanymore” hit with surprising depth, and the electric guitar was well defined, even at maximum volume. Switching tracks, the strange pops, claps and arcade noises in Glass Animals’ “Season 2 Episode 3” were nicely separated and Dave Bayley’s voice was crisp and forward.
Windows 11 Review: System Requirements May Force You To Buy A New Pc
To even run Windows 11, your PC needs to comply with the recommended system requirements. You need to have at least an 8th Gen Intel Core processor , or AMD’s Ryzen 2000 or later. Qualcomm processors made for PCs from the Snapdragon 850 onwards will also work.
Other requirements include at least a dual-core 1-GHz 64-bit processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 64GB hard drive. Your display must be at least 9-inches with a 720p or higher resolution, and your graphics card will need to be compatible with DirectX 12 or later with the WDDM 2.0 driver.
What has caused much confusion is the need for a TPM, or Trusted Platform Module, a security chip on the CPU. The good news is that this has been a requirement in Windows systems since 2016, so if your Windows laptop was released after that year, you will have TPM 2.0. You don’t need to comb through your specs or try to remember when you purchased your laptop to figure this all out. Microsoft has released a handy PC Health Check app that will quickly run a check to verify whether your system meets all of the necessary requirements.

Windows 11 Review: New Microsoft Store
How often do you use the Microsoft Store? Probably nowhere near as often as the iOS and Android app stores. There’s a reason for that. For one, Microsoft’s version lacks popular apps, and those it does contain just aren’t very good. Microsoft is taking the right steps to make its digital store the type of place you’d actually want to shop in. The new Microsoft Store for Windows 11 looks fantastic and is more organized than almost any other app store I’ve used.
Apps are organized into categories: Gaming, Entertainment, Productivity and Deals. You may not need to go that far because a handy list of “Essential” apps can be found on the home screen . There is also a featured games list and, my favorite, a list of the top free apps.
But as it stands, iTunes, a 2-star app, is the top pick. This really underlines the problem Microsoft faces: devs haven’t been porting apps over to Windows. It’s bad enough to give Microsoft fans flashbacks of the Windows Phone days.
Microsoft wants to rectify this issue by making its store more compelling for devs. Most importantly, the Windows Store can host any kind of app. Before, if developers wanted to bring their apps to the Windows Store, they had to employ a specific Microsoft framework. Now, they can choose from a number of technologies including the traditional desktop Win32 format, Microsofts UWP mode, and even progressive web apps.
Who It Isn’t For
- Those who want a gaming PC
- Those on a tight budget
- People who just need a clamshell laptop
Microsoft is clear about who should buy Surface Laptop Studio. It’s for those who work with data, engineers, designers, scientists, creators, and developers. It’s a professional piece of hardware. While it may look fantastic if you don’t need to draw or design, it is overkill at best and useless at worst. Microsoft touts the i5 model for “social content creators,” i.e., those doing lighter work who do need a pen for drawing or sketching up ideas, and I think that makes sense for those who want more than a Surface Pro 8.
What can I say if you’re not in those lines of work besides that this PC isn’t for you? If you want a “Surface gaming laptop,” this is not it. Like Surface Book, you can game on it , but at this price, you better be able to justify usage of that display that heavily leans on inking or those other two postures.
The design, feel, look, and execution of Surface Laptop Studio is much better than the first Surface Book.
As far as a successor to Surface Book, this laptop fixes a lot of things. There’s Thunderbolt 4, a much stronger CPU, a better SSD. The audio is louder, touchpad is better, and the display is more accurate. There’s Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos now to enhance music and movies. The new haptic pen is superb. And I think this laptop-style is much better than 360-degree hinges.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 Keyboard And Touchpad
I love this keyboard.
Apple, Dell and others have moved to low-profile key switches in order to cut tenths of an inch off their laptops’ chassis. Microsoft hasn’t and I hope it never does. My fingers effortlessly jumped from one key to the next thanks to the Surface Laptop 3’s bouncy keys, which have surprisingly decent travel.
With a cushy, soft-touch surface and quiet, satisfying click, the Surface Laptop 3’s keyboard will be a reprieve to anyone suffering from Apple’s stiff, loud butterfly keys. Then again, comparing this keyboard to Apple’s keyboards, butterfly or scissor, would be doing it a disservice. Rather, the Surface Laptop 3’s keyboard offers a typing experience closer to that of the brilliant ThinkPad keyboard.
I typed at 108 words per minute with a 95% accuracy rate on the 10FastFingers.com typing test. That is right around my 109-wpm average and matches my typical accuracy.
The 4.5 x 3-inch touchpad’s soft-touch coating felt plush against my fingers as I easily executed Windows 10 gestures, like pinch-to-zoom and three-finger swipe up to switch windows, on the Surface Laptop 3.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 Performance
I loaded 27 Microsoft Edge tabs on the Surface Laptop 3 and was never slowed by lag or throttling. Armed with an Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU and 16GB of RAM, the Surface Laptop 3 quickly loaded three 1080p YouTube videos, and I even watched Reverse2k win a round of Fortnite on Ninja’s Mixer stream with all those tabs running in the background. There was a slight delay loading the last few tabs in another batch of 10, but it didn’t bother me much.
We saw mixed results from the Surface Laptop 3 in our benchmark tests. The notebook scored a 19,078 on the Geekbench 4.3 overall performance test, losing out to the XPS 13 . The 10th Gen Ice Lake processor in the Surface Laptop 3 helped it defeat the MacBook Pro , the Spectre x360 13 and the premium laptop average .
In our HandBrake transcoding test, we push laptops to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution. The Surface Laptop 3 completed that task in 24 minutes and 55 seconds, which is much slower than the times from the XPS 13 , MacBook Pro and Spectre x360 . Even the premium laptop average was faster.
Microsoft must have gotten the memo about its slow hard drives. The 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD inside our unit duplicated 4.97GB of multimedia files in 9.4 seconds, for a rate of 541.4 megabytes per second. That’s quicker than showings by the storage in previous Surface devices and the Spectre x360 13 , although it still doesn’t top results from the XPS 13 or the MacBook Pro or the premium laptop average .

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 Review: Webcam
- Fast Windows Hello face logins
Theres not much to say about the 720p webcam built into the top of the Surface Laptop 4s screen, save that I wish it was a little more exciting. A bump up to 1080p would have been a welcome change that really helped set this latest Surface Laptop apart from its predecessors, all of which have sported 720p webcams above the display.
That said, the Surface Laptop 4s webcam is completely adequate for all your video chatting needs, and the image quality is decent if youre looking to take some laptop selfies.
As far as the much-touted Windows Hello biometric authentication goes, logging in via your face seems speedier than ever. I had some trouble getting the camera array to recognize me while setting the laptop up for facial recognition but once I got it squared away, the Windows Hello login proved so speedy that if I was allowed to blink during the process, Id have missed it.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 Review: Price And Release Date
- Starts at $999 for 13-inch, $1,299 for 15-inch
- Our unit with Core i7/16GB/512GB is $1,699
Available as of April 15th in the US and April 27th in the UK, a new Surface Laptop 4 ordered from Microsoft will cost you at least $999 for the 13.5-inch model and $1,299 for the 15-inch. Those entry-level models ship with AMD Ryzen 5/7 4000-series chips, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.
If you need more power you can configure the Surface Laptop 4 with beefier innards, potentially paying as much as $2,299 and $2,399 for the two models if you kit them out with the top-tier components. Unlike its predecessors, both sizes of the Surface Laptop 4 can be configured with your choice of an Intel 11th Gen Core i5/i7 CPU or an AMD Ryzen 5/7 4000-series processor, though the 15-inch model is limited to the higher-end Core i7/Ryzen 7 chips.
Our 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 4 review unit arrived decked in Microsofts new Ice Blue color scheme with a Core i7 CPU, 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD, a configuration which retails for $1,699.

A Design That Looks Like Microsofts Version Of A Macbook
The Surface Laptop Studio kind of looks like a Microsoft MacBook Pro at first glance and thats not a bad thing. This notebooks silver metal frame, dark gray chiclet keys and slim edges laden with USB-C ports all bring Apples laptops to mind, though the similarities end once you get your hands on its uniquely flexible display.
The Laptop Studio sports a 14-inch screen that you can fold down to turn the laptop into a tablet for drawing and sketching, or pull forward in Stage mode to use it as an angled touch canvas for taking notes, playing games or watching movies. This is all made possible thanks to what Microsoft is calling a Dynamic Woven Hinge, which felt sturdy and made it easy for us to flip the screen into its various modes.
Microsofts new laptop isnt the first 2-in-1 with this type of design, but it just might be the most elegant attempt at it yet. Notebooks such as the HP Elite Folio and Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 also have folding screens, but youll have to deal with either a bulky hinge in the back or a somewhat uncomfortable design that makes you grip the keyboard in tablet mode. By comparison, the Laptop Studio mostly looks like a regular ol notebook in laptop mode, and you wont feel a keyboard on your fingers when youre using it as a tablet. It mostly lays flat when you fold it down in Studio mode, though there is a very slight incline that we didnt really notice when sketching away.

What Is The Price Of The Surface Laptop Studio
The Surface Laptop Studio starts at $1,599.99, and that will get you a Core i5, 16GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD. Obviously, it goes up from there. Remember, just like the Surface Book 2 and 3, the Core i5 models dont come with a dedicated GPU. That means when you upgrade to a Core i7, you also get the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti. The Core i7 model starts at $2,099.99.
The good news is you dont have to buy a keyboard separately, like you would with the $1,099.99 Surface Pro 8. However, you might want to buy a Surface Slim Pen for $129.99, and its now stored in a pen garage underneath the device that charges it wirelessly. Another possible add-on is the Microsoft Complete extended warranty.
Surface Laptop Studio: Release Date Specs Price And Everything You Need To Know
Microsoft has announced its brand-new Surface Laptop Studio laptop. Originally rumored as the Surface Book 4, its Microsofts most powerful laptop yet. A big reason is it abandons the old Surface Book design. Theres no detachable display anymore.
Now, its a convertible display, similar to what weve seen from HPs Elite Folio and Acers ConceptD Ezel series. By changing the form factor, it allows Microsoft to keep all of the components in the base, rather than in the display. This allows for a more powerful CPU , and of course, graphics are better this year too.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 Review: Verdict
The Surface Laptop 4 improves on the Surface Laptop 3 in many ways, offering Windows fans a bloatware-free ultraportable with premium components packed inside a beautiful, lightweight chassis.
While Id have liked to see Microsoft attempt some more significant changes to the Surface Laptop formula, the excellent speakers, improved battery life, and under-the-hood upgrades make the Surface Laptop 4 one of the best Windows laptops you can buy and a serious contender for a spot among the best laptops on the market.
We already have a laundry list of changes wed like to see in a sequel , but the Surface Laptop 4s tall screen, comfortable keyboard and svelte, sturdy design make it a great choice for anyone looking to get work done around the house or out at the coffee shop.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 Review: Keyboard And Touchpad
- Plenty of travel for comfy typing
- Smooth and accurate touchpad, and there’s a touchscreen, too
Typing on the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 feels more comfortable than most laptops Ive worked on, thanks in large part to the nicely-sized keys and the Alcantara material around the keyboard. The keys feel satisfying to type on, with 1.3mm of travel and a nice click to them which helped me avoid bottoming out while typing quickly.
The 4.5 x 3-inch glass touchpad beneath the keys is also quite nice to use, feeling comfortably close to the keyboard while still affording my big dumb sausage fingers plenty of room to move. Both it and the laptops touchscreen felt very responsive to the touch, and I had no trouble using gesture commands on either surface.
