Do Smartphones Use Memory While Idling
Smartphones are basically small computers that you keep in your pocket, and they use memory as well.
Just like a computer, smartphones have a kernel.
So at a minimum, a smartphone will be using some memory, even idle.
Apples tend to use memory more efficiently than Android.
For Android, you can expect about .5 GB just to run their OS.
Apples iOS is similar to its macOS, so it has a wider range of memory use.
Apps running in the background can add to that memory use significantly for both phones.
How Much Ram Your Device Needs Will Depend On How You Use It
8 GB is the standard amount of RAM for your average desktop computer. Past that, many people go up to 16 GB, and occasionally users will go for 32 GB.
RAM is contained inside “memory sticks” in your computer. When buying RAM, you’ll see that these sticks come in various combinations for example, if you’re getting 16 GB, you can buy it in:
- One 16 GB stick
- Two 8 GB sticks
- Four 4 GB sticks
And so on. The combination you get doesn’t really matter. You just need to make sure that it all fits into your computer case, and is compatible with the rest of your computer’s parts.
So how much RAM do you need?
If you spend most of your computer time composing Word documents and playing Solitaire, your PC probably doesn’t need a significant amount of RAM. The standard 8 GB will do fine.
On the other hand, if you’re trying to craft the best desktop gaming rig you can, you’re going to need 16 GB, or possibly even 32 GB.
And of course, if you like to keep dozens of programs open at all times, more RAM is key.
Quick tip: When buying RAM, make sure you’re getting sticks made by reputable companies. The most popular RAM manufacturers include Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, and G.SKILL.
As far as phones and tablets go, there’s been a race to the top recently when it comes to RAM. So although you reasonably only need 4 GB of RAM on your Android or iPhone, the standard for newly released smartphones is 8 GB. And unless you’re really tech savvy, you can’t upgrade your phone’s RAM.
How Much Ram Do I Need For Productivity
If you’re planning on using your laptop for work, you’re going to want at least 8GB of RAM. This is because using various productivity-focused applications and multitasking with many different web browser tabs is more intensive than what the basic Windows 10 experience requires, and because of that, you’ll need more memory to compensate.
If you’re planning on doing some photo or video editing on your laptop, 16GB of RAM is ideal. This is because photo and video editing software tend to demand a lot of resources, and with only 8GB of RAM, you won’t be able to keep anything else open while using these programs without hurting your device’s performance. Additionally, you won’t be able to edit videos with resolutions above 1080p without grinding to a halt if you don’t have more than 8GB.
Note that if you often edit and render lots of extremely high resolution videos or do advanced graphical work that demands a lot of system resources, you will want to invest in 32GB of RAM .
In most cases, the best Windows laptops come with at least 8GB of RAM, and often have configurations available for 16GB or more.

How To Know If You Have Enough Ram
How much physical memory should my computer be using might be a hard question to answer directly.
Knowing if you need more RAM is much more straightforward.
Here are the basic symptoms of insufficient RAM:
- Computer freezes or stops responding
- Programs have to reload all the time
- Your computer reboots randomly
- Lag when typing
Every computer can experience one or more of these symptoms at times.
It may not be anything to worry about, especially if youre doing more than you usually plan on doing.
However, if you notice this behavior a lot, even when you are doing very little on your computer, it may be time to bulk up the RAM.
How Much Ram For Tablets
Tablets are not expected to deal with heavy-duty software tasks, so their RAM needs tend to be pretty low similar to a lot of smartphones.
However, as multi-tab browsers and more complex software continue to make the transition, tablet needs are becoming more and more similar to laptop needs. Current spec options typically range from 2GB to 16GB of RAM, with other considerations like battery life and processor speed often being of greater consideration.
With something like the iPad Mini, which touts 3GB of RAM, its design is more focused on its vibrant display and long battery life. Meanwhile, Apples latest 12.9-inch iPad Pro has 6GB of RAM to accommodate the 2-in-1 crowd, although the new 2021 models will ship with 8GB or 16GB. Microsofts Surface Go 2 has a default 4GB with an option of 8GB because it falls somewhere between a laptop and a tablet our reviewer was not entirely won over.
Ultimately, this gives us a guideline for choosing tablet RAM:
- 4GB is OK for lightweight users.
- 8GB is a better fit in most tablet cases.
- 16GB if you plan to use a tablet as your primary PC.
Remember, tablets are generally complementary devices that reside between your smartphone and your PC. If youre leaning more toward a laptop replacement, buy a tablet configuration with the RAM youd need for any other desktop or laptop.

For Gaming Or Media Professionals
If you live in Photoshop or InDesign, you’ll need as much space as you can get because media files are ginormous. The same goes for computer games as well, especially if you want to bump up the graphics.
If you’re working with a flexible budget, 1TB of storage will last you a while. The only downside is that they cost somewhere between $300 – $500.
How Much Ram Is Sufficient Enough For A Laptop Windows 10
4 GB of RAM is enough to run Windows 10 efficiently and use essential applications such as web browsers, word processors, and word processors. This amount of RAM is very common in most budget laptops, including the best budget laptops available. In today’s laptop market, it’s unlikely you’ll find a laptop without at least 4GB of RAM.

What Is The Average Ram Of A Laptop
The most common RAM size you can find in everyday laptops is 8 GB. Some models in the lower price range are equipped with 4 GB and in some cases only 2 GB. Large and high-end laptop models are typically 12 GB and 16 GB. You will also find powerful gaming laptops and mobile workstations with 24 or even 32 gigabytes.
Is 128gb Enough For A Laptop
Laptops that come with an SSD usually have at least a 128GB capacity which is the bare minimum. If youre a light user, its plenty of space for all your programs and a decent amount of data. But if youre a user with a library of demanding games or a huge media collection. The lack of on-board storage may become a hassle. If your budget doesnt have room for more storage space, you can get around this by storing some files in the cloud or adding an external hard drive. Several gaming and workstation laptops offer both a fast SSD and a spacious mechanical hard drive for less than the cost of a similar laptop with a large capacity SSD. In our opinion, the increase in speed is worth the trade off in lack of space.

Check Your Total Ram Consumption
To see how much RAM is currently being consumed, in the MacOS menu bar click on Go…
And then select Utilities. Double-click on Activity Monitor.
Click on the Memory tab. This is where you see all running processes and how much memory is being used right now:
If youre low on RAM, you should follow our guide to speeding up a Mac which starts by recommending that you close as many applications as you can.
However, if that doesnt improve performance, you might want to clean up some space using our very own Avast Cleanup for Mac product. Safely delete junk data, duplicate files, and poor quality photos you dont need to free up extra space and memory.
Normal Ram Usage Macos
Apple has a slightly different approach to RAM.
The macOS is designed to use as much memory available to have it ready to hand out at any time for your other apps and programs.
This design means that if you have 8 GBs, your Mac will try to idle using all of it.
This factor doesnt mean that your Mac is using all of it to run your OS.
It means that your system is preparing to hand out RAM as you need it efficiently.
For example, if you arent running anything, your Mac will be using a lot of memory for the OS.
The minute you open up your Internet browser, the Mac allocates the appropriate memory to that program, which makes the transition smoother, and lowers the memory the OS is using .
So how much RAM should be used at idle for Mac?
In theory, it varies so much that almost any number makes sense.

Does Ram Speed Matter
Your RAM speed wont matter if your CPU cant keep up. However, you will see a slight boost in performance with faster RAM if your other components can handle it. But you can improve your performance much more by upgrading your CPU or GPU speeds.
Some CPUs list a recommended RAM speed in their technical specs. Using this recommended speed can also boost performance, but only slightly. For example, while you might not see a much higher frame rate while gaming with faster RAM, you might see a higher 1% and 0.1% frame rate. Also, you need to make sure that your motherboard supports higher RAM speeds. Otherwise, your RAM speed will cap out, and then it wont matter how fast it is.
What Is A Good Processor Speed For Business Laptops
AMD and Intel have become the go-to processor brands for many business laptop buyers. They usually offer high processor speeds at affordable prices. While these processors are generally safe options, gauging processor speed depends on the number of cores, according to Anh Trinh, managing editor of GeekWithLaptop.
“A quad-core with 1.8GHz is better than a dual-core with 2.2GHz,” Trinh said. “For a business laptop, you’re going to need more than 1.6GHzto compete with modern-day software.”
Laptops usually operate more slowly than desktop CPUs because they are designed for energy conservation. Most laptops have two cores, though some high-performance laptops have four cores. For higher processor speeds, you’ll want at least a quad-core system.

8Gb is a good place to start. Moreover, an upgrade to 16GB is recommended for enthusiasts, hardcore gamers, and the average workstation user. Serious workstation users may go further to 32GB but always be prepared for high cost if you want speed or fancy features like RGB lighting.
Remember its the easiest component to upgrade in a desktop PC.
All of these should have at least 8GB of RAM on the associated PC to run smoothly.
The Vive only recommends 4GB, but, honestly, go with at least 8GB.
Video and photo editing
If youre editing a lot of HD video, go for 16GB or more. If youre working with photos and a bit of video thrown in, 8GB should be enough.
Editing apps will work on lower amounts of RAM.
The most important thing to mention about VRAM.
VRAM is referred to as Video RAM. That is used to store image data for the computer. Review Computers for Video and Photo editing under budget.
Choosing RAM speeds
RAMs frequency affects the maximum bandwidth. If you want to move more data back and forth at once, you need to go with RAM with a higher frequency. Latency, on the other hand, is how fast your RAM realizes it needs to act when the CPU calls on it.
If youre doing a sort of high-performance task on your PC, opting for a higher frequency that is measured in megahertz is the best plan of action.

How Much Ram Do You Need
Random access memory, usually shortened to RAM or simply memory, is one of the most important parts of any computing device. Modern PCs, tablets, and phones typically have from 2GB up to 32GB, though some have even more. But how much RAM do you need, exactly?
Adding more RAM to your computer wont always make it run faster, so its important to buy an appropriate amount based on your computer and the applications you want to run. Windows 10, for example, takes about 2GB of RAM on its own, while the ChromeOS featured in the best Chromebooks requires far less.
In this guide, well walk you through how much RAM you need for a tablet, laptop, desktop, and gaming machine. If you want to know how much RAM you need for a smartphone, we have a guide for that, too.
How Much Memory Or Ram Should My Computer Have
This question depends on what programs you run on the computer and how many windows and tabs are open at a time. A good idea is to look at the system requirements of the programs you run on your computer and double that number. However, below is the general recommendation for the amount of memory we suggest that today’s computers have.
Recommended: 8 GBExcellent: 16 GB or more.
If you’re using an older computer, with an older version of an operating system, the minimum memory requirements are lot less. For example, users who are still running Microsoft Windows 98 can get away with 64 MB of memory since its requirements are only 24 MB.
Keep in mind that a 32-bit version of any Microsoft Windows operating system only detects a maximum of 4 GB of total system memory. Upgrading to a 64-bit processor and a 64-bit version of Windows increases your memory requirements, but it also allows your computer to recognize more memory.
