How to Upgrade Laptop RAM and How to Install Laptop Memory – Quick & Easy!!!

Lets start with the most common word RAM, which will probably confuse you.

RAM is the set of data that must be stored before it can be processed.

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. These are dynamic memory chips that can be written and overwritten very quickly with data.

Games require 8GB to 32GB of RAM. 8GB RAM is sufficient for light games, but if you need to play ultra games, 32GB and 16GB RAM are suitable options.

Check out the laptop guide here for more memory for ultra gaming.

However, unlike a hard drive, the memory used for RAM is also unstable, meaning that it only holds data when the chip is powered and is not designed to store information for long periods of time.

In other words, we can say that RAM is the memory that actually allows you to work with the data you need to run programs and especially to access files. Simply put: Every time a computer loads a program or tries to open a file, it accesses the desired data in RAM.

Your operating system also uses random access memory during operation.

The boot time of your laptop depends on the size of the RAM memory.

For example, how your laptop boots if it has 16 GB of RAM.

For example, when I want to run a program, it fetches data from long-term memory to short-term memory in RAM, where it can be retrieved quickly enough to run without problems.

Introduction To Computer Ram

Random Access Memory, or RAM, is the unsung hero of the computing world. Computer manufacturers love to boast about CPU power, or the size and resolution of the display, or even more commonly in the case of laptops, how thin the computer is. Now dont get us wrong, these are all important specs, but savvy computer shoppers know to also pay attention to a lesser-promoted spec: How much RAM the machine has.

Why does this matter and how can you know what numbers you should be looking for? Read on, and we will tell you everything you need to know and it wont feel random at all.

Can You Keep Your Old Ram Module

Mixing different RAM modules can cause performance issues due to RAM incompatibilities. In the worst case, your system won’t boot or it might not recognize one of the RAM modules.

If you want to keep the original RAM module, and if you are not comfortable with adjusting settings in the BIOS, you need to find a second module of the exact same make, i.e. same frequency, latency, and voltage.

Since it’s too easy to mess this up and because changing BIOS settings to fix incompatibilities can be challenging, we recommend buying a completely new memory kit and removing the old memory stick. It’s the easiest and safest choice.

How Much Ram Can My Computer Have

The total amount of memory, or RAM, a computer can have is dependent on the motherboard installed in the computer and the operating system. In general, most motherboards will support either two or four memory modules, but the type and amount of memory can differ widely from one motherboard to the next.

How Much Ram Do I Need

How Much RAM Do I Have in My PC?

The easy answer would be to say the more the better. We prefer to advise you to reflect on how you use your laptop. Simply, the more RAM you have, the faster your programs will run, and the more programs you can run at the same time. You may not need 32 GB of RAM for your everyday use. 8 GB might be just fine or clearly not enough.Below we have tried to describe how much RAM you will need based on your usage.

2 GB of RAM bare minimum

The very minimum you need to use for basic programs like your e-mail application or web browser. If you are purchasing a device , we recommend that you get a device with more.

4 GB of RAM suitable for office and school work

This is the minimum amount of RAM that will allow you to open multiple programs or pages comfortably. This memory is enough for standard office/school work, multimedia viewing, and very light game play. Creatives and Gamers should have more RAM. If you purchased your laptop recently, it should have at least 4 GB of RAM.

8 GB of RAM the new standard

Most computers today are sold with 8 GB of RAM. This is enough memory to run most productivity programs and photo /video editing programs, stream content, and play most games. Multi-tasking is comfortably fluid with this amount of RAM. You should be aware that many quality games will need all the 8 GB to run properly which means you will not be able to run a program in the background.

What Is Ram And What Does It Do

At a very basic level, a computer is comprised of three main components.

  • The CPU: The CPU is the part that actually does the computing.
  • The Hard Drive: The hard drive contains everything the CPU is going to need to do its job, including the operating system, apps, and files.
  • The RAM: RAM, the memory, stores just the portion of the of data from the hard drive that the CPU needs at any given moment.
  • Does More Ram Make The Computer Faster

Lower RAM sizes slow down your PC, wears down your hard drive, and reduce your level of productivity. That is not to say more RAM means faster PC. In many cases when the software is installed on your PC, the software takes up a minimum and recommended amount of RAM space for itself. All other software do the same especially when they are open or are running resulting in a slower PC.

When you add more RAM to such a PC, the PC runs faster. Faster in the sense that you get to load some applications more quickly than before. But aside from this, nothing special happens. In other words, you can now multitask better. Hence more RAM equals faster multitasking not necessarily faster computer.

If your RAM isn’t bursting at the seams during those slowdowns, then your bottleneck is likely somewhere else, and you should look to other solutions for speeding up your PC.

On Macs, you should check Activity Monitor. When you experience a slowdown, press Command + Space to bring up Spotlight, type “Activity Monitor,” and press Enter. Click the Memory tab along the top of the window. You’ll see a graph at the bottom showing you how much of your RAM is currently in use.

Remember that more free RAM does not equal betteras long as you have some free RAM, you’re fine, and should look into other potential upgrades. But if Activity Monitor is saying that your RAM is full to the brim, you probably need more. In the meantime, you can check the list of processes and close any programs that are using lots of memory.

Sadly, many modern Macs do not have upgradeable RAM. Most iMacs and older MacBooks are upgrade-friendly, while newer MacBooks have their RAM permanently soldered to the motherboard. Google your specific model and see what’s doable on your machine. And for more on choosing exactly the right RAM for your PC, check out our deep-dive feature on RAM buying strategy.

    What Does Upgrading Ram Do

Upgrading RAM gives your computer the critical resources it needs to temporarily shuffle data from the hard disk to the CPU to process it. Even the fastest solid-state drives are sluggish compared to how quickly RAM can get your computer the information it needs. Without RAM or without sufficient RAM for whatever it is youre doing your computer would become unbearably slow or not even work at all.

Generally, people add more RAM in order to:

Notice that all the reasons listed above directly relate to making your PC faster and more powerful. Thats the primary reason to upgrade RAM.

Before you open your laptops back panel, make sure you turn off your laptop and remove its battery. Once you have removed the battery, unscrew the back with a compatible screw driver. In order to avoid electrostatic discharge from your body, make sure you ground yourself by touching any other metal object. Once you open the back, locate the RAM module .

This procedure may differ from model to model, and in case of laptops with non-removable batteries, it is fine if you dont remove its battery. There are also some laptop models which come with an easy access back, which lets you swap or add more RAM without removing the entire back panel.

Is 16 Gb Of Ram Enough

With 16 GB of RAM, you have enough memory to run as many programs as you want without slowing your computer down. This amount of memory is enough for hardcore gamers, video editors, gaming streamers, and anyone using AutoCAD or other demanding software.

For example, we were not able to use all 16 GB of memory installed on our laptop because the processor slowed everything down too much. So, if you have 16 GB of RAM, your processor is probably to blame for any bottlenecks.

Why Might You Consider A Ram Upgrade

Certain applications lean heavily on system RAM. Chrome web browser is notoriously RAM hungry as it treats each open tab as an individual process with its own memory allocation. Sandboxing as this is called, is advantageous in that if one tab crashes it doesnt take down the whole browser. The tradeoff is that it is RAM-intensive.

If you regularly work with several applications or browser tabs open at once, making a RAM upgrade is a near-surefire way to improve performance. If your PC is running slower than you think it should at any given time, the Task Manager in Windows is a good way to check whether you are overtaxing your available RAM.

Open the Task Manager in Windows 10 by pressing ALT + CTL + DEL.

    Task Manager showing RAM usage

A good rule of thumb is that if the Available Memory is less than 25 percent of your Total Memory, a RAM upgrade will provide a tangible performance boost for the end user.

While in Task Manager, watch RAM performance when you open a new application. If new apps open slower than you would like, and you notice that usage spikes closer to 100 percent of capacity, then a RAM upgrade probably will serve you well.
