How Much Ram Do You Need For A Laptop
Random Access Memory, or RAM, is the unsung hero of the computing world. Computer manufacturers love to boast about CPU power, or the size and resolution of the display, or even more commonly in the case of laptops, how thin the computer is. Now dont get us wrong, these are all important specs, but savvy computer shoppers know to also pay attention to a lesser-promoted spec: How much RAM the machine has.
Why does this matter and how can you know what numbers you should be looking for? Read on, and we will tell you everything you need to know and it wont feel random at all.
How To Check Maximum Ram In Laptop
The easiest way to check is on your computer itself. It can be achieved by using command prompt.
1. On the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator. This will open command prompt.
2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacity and hit enter. There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your motherboard can support.
The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it using KB to GB conversion tool to define the capacity in Gigabytes.
In this example, the maximum RAM capacity supported by motherboard is 32GB. Bear in mind, it is not recommended to installed more the supported capacity. Those extra GB will be not use or in other words, will be a waste.
Additionally, you can always check your computer model or motherboard on official website to check on maximum RAM capacity it can support.
If you have no idea, who/what is your motherboard manufacturer is, you can use tool such as
1. and run it as administrator.
2. On Mainboard, focus on Motherboard > Manufacturer.
There, you will see the information about the motherboard. In this example, ASUSTek Computer Inc. is my motherboard manufacturer. The model of my motherboard or my laptop model is K43SA. This tool is very helpful when it comes on providing details about your computer components.

The Role Of The Operating System
When you have a 32-bit processor, your motherboard wont support more than 4 GB of RAM regardless of the operating system.
The operating system version, however, poses some limits.
- Mac OS from 10.10 can support up to 18 exabytes.
- Mac OS X from 10.9 can support up to 128 GB.
- Mac OS X < 10.9 can support up to 96GB.
For 64-bit Windows machines:
- Windows 10 Home: 128 GB
- Windows 10 Pro: 2 TB
- Windows 10 Pro for Workstation: 6 TB
- Windows 10 Enterprise: 6 TB
- Windows 10 Education: 128 GB

How Much Ram Should My Graphics Card Have
More importantly, the latest tests show that you should have twice as much system memory as your VRAM card.
So for a 4 GB graphics card you need 8 GB or more of system memory, and for an 8 GB card you should ideally have 16 GB of system memory.
Technically, nothing prevents you from using an 8GB card with 8GB of RAM. But you still have double RAM for the graphics card.
What is the ECC?
ECC RAM is very popular in servers or other high data density systems because it protects against data corruption by automatically detecting and correcting memory errors.
Standard RAM uses banks of eight memory chips to store data and make it available to the processor on demand.
- Lower access speed and higher power consumption.
Because of these properties, DRAMs are often used in :
- System memory
3. Synchronous dynamic memory -SDRAM
Popular products using SDRAM : Computer memory, game consolesAs the name implies, it runs in sync with the CPUs clock. That is, it waits for the user to respond to data entry. But if you compare it to DRAM, it responds immediately to input data, which is a property of asynchronous. One of the main advantages of synchronous operation is that the processor can process overlapping instructions in parallel or in a pipeline. One could say that it is an opportunity to pick up a new statement before the previous statement is fully resolved .
4. Synchronous dynamic RAM with single data rate -SDR SDRAM
5. Dual Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic RAM -DDR SDRAM
How Much Ram Can My Computer Have
The total amount of memory, or RAM, a computer can have is dependent on the motherboard installed in the computer and the operating system. In general, most motherboards will support either two or four memory modules, but the type and amount of memory can differ widely from one motherboard to the next.

What Is The Difference Between Ddr3 Vs Ddr4 Ram
If you shop around for RAM, youll notice that there are DDR3 and DDR4 sticks. The main difference between DDR3 vs DDR4 is that the newer DDR4 sticks are faster, more energy-efficient, and have a higher capacity.
DDR stands for Double Data Rate, and the numbers 3 and 4 refer to the memory chips version. RAM speed is measured in megahertz . This measure tells you how many times your RAM can access its storage space per second.
As of now, DDR3 RAM can only reach a maximum speed of 2133 MHz, while DDR4 doesnt have any speed limits. When it comes to capacity, DDR3 can only handle up to 16 GB per stick, but you can buy DDR4 modules up to 256 GB.
DDR3 and DDR4 also come in different standard sizes. A DDR3 RAM stick wont fit into a DDR4 RAM slot. So. before you upgrade your RAM, make sure to check or search what kind of RAM slot your computer has. Also, it is important to note that desktop computers use a different kind of RAM than laptops.
What Is A Good Cas Latency For Ram
CAS latency is the number of clock cycles a RAM stick takes to access a set of data. For RAM sticks with identical speeds and chip versions, lower latency is better. While DDR3 generally has lower latencies than DDR4, the latter compensates with much higher speeds that deliver better performance.
Once you understand what RAM capacity, speed, and latency are, heres how to find out how much memory your current computer has:
How To Check Maximum Ram Speed Supported By Your Computer

How Do You Know How Much Ram Your Motherboard Supports
RAM is a hardware component that temporarily saves information while youre using computer programs. When you have more RAM space, you can store more data. Thus, your computer runs faster.
However, you cant install an unlimited number of RAM because you have physical limits such as hardware and operating systems.
Each motherboard model will support a finite number of RAM. So, before everything, you may need to know how much RAM your motherboard can support.
Here are some steps you can follow to discover how much RAM your motherboard can support:
What Is A Good Amount Of Ram For A Laptop
With current DDR3 memory technologies, this limit on 8 GB module-based laptops is generally increased to 16 GB of RAM if the laptop can support it. By far the most common limit is 8 GB. Some ultraportable systems even have memory that cannot be changed at all.

Why Does My Computer Use Memory When Idle
What is your computer using its memory for when youre not using it? Lots of things.
First, your computer has to run your operating systems. Different operating systems use memory differently, so a low idle on a Mac could be considered a high idle on Windows.
Every operating system has a kernel. That is the portion of the operating system that is always in the memory.
The kernel can use as little as 1 Megabyte and up to 10 MBs of memory.
That means that your system has to be using 1 MB of memory at an absolute bare minimum.
Then your computer has to run every interaction it is responsible for, even if you arent using them at that moment.
These programs are called drivers.
Drivers allow you to use keyboards, speakers, monitors, and all other pieces of hardware attached to your computer.
Is 8 Gb Of Ram Enough
With 8 GB of RAM, you will have enough memory to run several programs at once. You can open lots of browser tabs at once, use photo or video editing programs, stream content, and play mid-to-high-end games.
Many Windows 10 and macOS computers or laptops come with 8 GB of memory installed these days. So, 8 GB of memory should be more than enough to run most productivity programs. Its also the minimum amount of memory recommended by Adobe to run Creative Cloud programs like Photoshop.
While 8 GB of RAM is more than enough for most people, you can easily use it up if you have dozens of tabs open on your web browser, and you are running several programs at the same time. For example, we were used up more than 8 GB of memory on a laptop by opening 50 tabs in Chrome while running Photoshop, PowerPoint, Word, and Spotify at once.
Some newer games will also use up to 8 GB of RAM all on their own. For example, Cyberpunk 2077 will require at least 8 GB of memory to run when it comes out. That means you might experience major lag when trying to run the game if you have any other programs running in the background.

How much RAM should be used at idle for Windows?
Windows holds some of your memory in reserve right off the top, even if there is no need for it currently.
It does this in anticipation of being used. This reserve can be anywhere from 1.8 to 2.4 GBs of RAM.
The operating system runs between .8 and 2.0 GBs of RAM.
In general, the absolute lowest you are running is nearly a GB of RAM for your operating system.
So Windows 10 using 4 GB ram only has 2 to 3 GBs available for other programs with just the OS running.

Take Note Of You Ram’s Specs
The wrong type of RAM won’t fit into your laptop. For best results, be sure to match the clock rate of your RAM sticks. In other words, when you buy an additional RAM stick, make sure its MHz count is identical to the one/s you already have.
Also keep in mind that laptop RAM modules are significantly smaller than those for desktop computer, hence they are called SO-DIMM for small outline dual in-line memory module. Don’t accidentally buy the wrong type of DIMM.
Here is a summary of what you need to know:
- Type of RAM, i.e. DDR, DDR2, or DDR3
- Amount of MHz supported by your laptop
- Physical size
