What To Look For In A New Laptop

Laptop Buying Guide for 2021 – What You Need to Know!

Weve actually got you covered already with an in-depth guide on how to buy a new laptop and quick tips on specific features to look for when shopping.

There is one major element to keep in mind when upgrading right now, however.

Most new laptops entirely skip the optical drive in order to fit other components into a slimmer profile. If you still use install discs, make sure to factor it in

While our buying guide covers the specs, price, and features to look out for, you are probably still wondering:

If You’re A My Best Buy Rewards Member

Best Buy is one of the biggest players in the game of laptop deals, and Black Friday is their Super Bowl. We see some of the highest quality discounts of the year at this retailer and 2021 is already off to a stellar start. Back in October, Best Buy launched its early offers with one crucial difference that is setting it apart from other stores at this point in the race.

My Best Buy members can register the products they buy before Black Friday and if the retailer drops the price again during the official sales, they’ll receive a refund of the difference. That means no concerns about finding a better deal on the day, especially if you plan on shopping here anyway. This doesn’t protect you against additional price drops at other retailers, though.

Productivity Storage And Media Tests

PCMark 10 and 8 are holistic performance suites developed by the PC benchmark specialists at UL. The PCMark 10 test we run simulates different real-world productivity and content creation workflows. We use it to assess overall system performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet jockeying, web browsing, and videoconferencing. Unfortunately, the test would not complete on this laptop, which sometimes happens with budget systems. It doesnt mean this system is incapable of these tasks, just that it has a conflict with this benchmark.

PCMark 8, meanwhile, has a storage subtest that we use to assess the speed of the system’s boot drive. Both tests yield a proprietary numeric score higher numbers are better. We can at least compare these results in the table below, and you can also catch the PCMark 10 performance of the other systems.

As mentioned, there is no PCMark 10 result for this system, but you can see the SSD stacks up to the rest. Theyre all in line with one another, offering quick boot and load file times. The Asus Laptop L410 has slower eMMC flash storage, and couldnt complete this test. That is a key distinction in laptops in this price zone under $400, you’ll see a mix of “true” SSDs and pokier eMMC . The former is better.

Testing The Modern 1: Just Enough Pep To Stay Current

The parts that make this laptop tick are modest, which is to be expected. The goal here is a working everyday laptop for home and light office tasks, and to that end, the system packs an Intel Core i3-10110U processor, 8GB of memory, and a 128GB SSD. The processor is a humble two-core, four-thread chip that doesnt chew up much energy, but it should have enough pep for simple multitasking. That 128GB of storage is definitely a bit restrictive, but for documents and a moderate number of photos and videos, it will do.

To measure this machines performance, were going to run it through our usual suite of benchmark tests and compare the results to the competition. You can find the names and specs of these competitors in the following table…

These are all inexpensive machines, as well, falling right in the same price range . The Asus Laptop L410 is the least expensive , with a low-power Intel Celeron CPU and just 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage. The VivoBook 15 is similar to the Modern 14 in terms of components, but of course with a larger 15-inch screen . The Dell Inspiron 15 3000 is another 15-inch laptop, priced at $369 as tested. Finally, the Asus Vivobook 17 M712 is a bit more expensive , and one of our top picks for any budget laptop, albeit with a giant 17.3-inch screen.

What Should You Look For When Buying A New Laptop

The 8 Best Laptops Under $200 to Buy in 2019

There are certain things you can look out for when buying a new laptop in 2021 that can ensure you get the best laptop for your money.

Make sure you take a look at the specifications of a laptop before buying. This is a good way of quickly seeing how powerful a laptop is, and what it is capable of as long as you know what youre looking for.

First of all is the processor. This is essentially the brain of the laptop, and a laptop will usually have a processor made by either Intel or AMD. Intel is by far the most popular CPU maker for laptops, though were seeing an increasing number of AMD-powered laptops as well.

As a general rule of thumb, Intel processors offer better performance, but AMD processors are better value.

To make things more simple, both Intel and AMD have numbered their processors to give you a rough idea of what sort of tasks a laptop with that processor can perform.

If youre after a budget laptop for simple tasks like browsing the web or watching Netflix, then a laptop with an Intel Pentium, Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3, processor will do that job without making the laptop too expensive.

If youre after something with a bit more oomph perhaps to do more complex task like editing your home videos or playing games then go for a laptop with an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor as a minimum.

A newer processor performs better and is more power efficient so battery life will last longer. They are more expensive, though.

To Wait Or Not To Wait

When deciding whether to buy now or wait, you have to consider both price and obsolescence. No matter what type of laptop you want, you are likely — but not certain — to get the best prices in either the back-to-school or holiday time frames.

If you’re worried about your new laptop becoming obsolete soon after you buy it, you need to make sure that the model you get has either an Intel 8th Gen Core or an AMD Ryzen Mobile processor inside. Most mainstream consumer laptops now have 8th Gen processors inside and some business laptops have them also. However, budget systems and mobile workstations won’t get 8th Gen upgrades until much later in 2018.

How Much Does A Laptop Cost

Choosing a laptop can be a daunting task nowadays especially if one has no particular type in mind yet. One cant just head to the nearest computer shop and spend hours figuring what kind of laptop he wants.

But that would not be the case if one is making an informed decision. Specifically, if it answers the basic question: What would be that laptop for? This piece will be a guide on that and also on how much does a laptop cost.

How To Be Strategic

The rules are wonky when it comes to laptops. Sometimes youll find that the oldest models cost just as much as the newer ones or the older model is even more expensive!

If theres a particular laptop youve had your eye on, pay close attention to the manufacturers announcements. This will clue you in on specific release dates. But this doesnt always imply that the older model will go on sale.

Like the laptops themselves, not every new release means a significant change in performance. Also keep in mind that while an evolutionary improvement of a chip or component on its own may not seem that significant, laptop manufacturers use this as an opportunity to improve their offerings.

So, when is the best time to take the plunge and make the purchase? The Clark Deals team has been searching for the best available prices on laptops since 2016. We took the time to look back over the deals we posted between 2016 and 2019 to see when the most deals appeared throughout those years.

Its no surprise that the most deals showed up during November around Black Friday. Companies like Best Buy, Dell and Lenovo also offer deals throughout the rest of the year. Clark likes to check Frys Electronics daily email deals as well as Micro Center during non-holidays.

Laptop Tablet Or Desktop Computer

The first thing to consider when buying a new computer is whether you want a laptop, a tablet, or a desktop model.

Desktop computers

If you plan to use your computer in one location, desktops have many advantages.

  • Power – You can get a more powerful computer for your money. A typical, modern-day desktop computer can provide a 500-gigabyte hard drive, a 3.4-gigahertz dual-core processor, a 24x DVD+/-RW optical drive, and 1 gigabyte of installed memory, which you can upgrade to 4GB.
  • Upgrade options – There are always options to upgrade. You can add a larger hard drive if your system is slow starting up, shutting down, or in performing day-to-day tasks. If you don’t want to install a new one inside your computer, try an external USB 3.0 drive, then move your music, photos, and videos to it. Plus, more RAM means more multitasking potential it’ll allow you to quickly switch back and forth between different applications.

You can get a larger monitor like a 27-inch, LED, full-HD 1080p model and set up your keyboard in a way that’s ergonomically comfortable for you.

Laptop computers

If you need a more portable computer, a laptop is powerful and affordable, and you can always connect it to a separate monitor and keyboard when you’re at your desk and you want to use a larger screen. Modern-day laptops can serve a variety of functions depending on your intended use and what style you feel most comfortable with.

Reasons for this include assumable concern for small dents and scratches from heavy usage and possible viruses. Also, the battery strength might have decreased â making the laptop less mobile friendly â which reduces its value. You can avoid this problem by submitting your item on PawnGuru. Only shops that are interested will send you cash offers!

Pawn Tidbits:

Why do some pawn shops buy computers and others do not?

There are several reasons for this. Firstly, a pawnbrokerâs inventory will vary by local demand in their city. Meaning most pawn shops will only deal with items they think their local clientele will buy. For the many that do deal with electronics, it will really depend on your item. Is it very old? Does it work? Will a future customer want to buy it?

Can I trade in my old Laptop or Tablet for a new one?

Answer: Yes! Once inside, ask to see their inventory of laptops and tablets. If you see a computer you like, ask if you could trade in your old one, or get a substantial discount. You will definitely find awesome deals on laptops and tablet.

Now that you know how much pawn shops pay for laptops, you have a rough understanding of the least and most money you can get for it. With PawnGuru, you can rest assured youâre going to get the best offer possible from a pawn shop near you.

You’re Not Concerned About Shipping Times

The best laptop deals of the year may land on the big day itself, but if you need a machine sooner that’s not going to matter. However, if you can sit it out a little longer, we’d generally recommend waiting. Odds are that prices, overall, are going to be better during official Black Friday sales which means there’s no harm in holding off if you don’t mind receiving your new machine later on.

How Much Storage Do I Need In A Laptop For College

When it comes to the best laptops for college you probably don’t need as much storage as you think you do, and that’s because a lot of what we do these days ends up in the cloud anyway. Still, if you’re looking for somewhere to store your photos, documents, and videos, then you’ll need some space to play with. Most budget Windows laptops tend to come with 128GB drives, which after the Windows 10 installation, tends to leave you with just under 100GB to play with.

This may be a bit tight depending on what apps you use, and what media you’re tend to play around with. If you’re doing anything with video or a lot of hi-res images, then you should look for a 256GB as a minimum or even a 512GB drive if your budget can stretch to it.

If you’re looking to do a bit of gaming, then you need to factor that in for the storage as well, as modern games can be huge . And while it’s unlikely you’ll be playing AAA games on a budget laptop that’s intended for college, it won’t take many games to eat into a smaller drive.

Cheap Laptops: Spotting The Best Laptop Deals Under $200

Buying a new computer: How much processing power do you need?

One of the first things we often check when shopping for cheap laptops is the amount of storage on offer. As shoppers, we’ve become accustomed to comparing prices and models based on the number of gigabytes next to the model name. However, there may be more to it than that, especially when you’re browsing the cheaper shelves. You may also need to pay attention to your operating system when picking up a budget laptop deal under $200.

Some cheap laptops are more worthy of your cash than others, and many simply need to be avoided. For example, you’ll easily find a Windows machine that offers just 16 or 32GB of storage, but with update file and software sizes increasing, you may quickly find that insufficient. However, finding a Chromebook with 16 or 32GB of storage for under $200 makes for a great cheap laptop deal. That’s because these machines run on Chrome OS which doesn’t require updates and operates largely through your browser.

Similarly, a lot of laptops hold incredibly low price tags because they are labelled as ‘FreeDOS’. This means they don’t have an operating system on them already, so you will need to buy Windows 10 to get them set up.
