How To Select Multiple Displays Viewing Mode On Windows 10

How to connect three or more monitors to your laptop

Using the available settings, you can also choose the viewing mode for your displays. For example, if you’re using a second monitor, you can expand the main screen to the new display, or you can mirror both monitors, which is an ideal option when showing a presentation. If you’re using a laptop with an external monitor, you can even disable the main display, and only use the second monitor as your primary.

To change the viewing mode on Windows 10, use these steps:

  • Open Settings.
  • Under the “Select and rearrange displays” section, select the monitor that you want to adjust.
  • Under the “Multiple displays” section, use the drop-down menu to set the appropriate viewing mode:

  • Duplicate desktop â Shows the same desktop on both displays.
  • Extend â Expands the primary desktop to the secondary display.
  • Disconnect this display â Turn off the selected monitor.
  • After you complete the steps, you may need to repeat steps No. 4 and 5 to set the display mode on the remaining monitors. Also, note that using these settings, you can make any of the monitors as your primary display.

How Can I Extend My Display Across Three Monitors

If you want to extend your display across all monitors, scroll down to Multiple Displays in Settings> System> Display and select Extend Display. You can also use this option to mirror your display, if you’re showing something on the monitor in a presentation, for example, or use it to temporarily disable monitors without unplugging them.

Connect A Monitor To Every Output Type

Theres a good chance that your laptop has more than one display output type. For example, the computer this is being written on has both an HDMI port and a Mini-DisplayPort output. The first is wired to the dedicated GPU, and the second is wired to the integrated Intel GPU. Its possible to connect a monitor to both outputs and have both run at the same time. Both monitors should run alongside the internal display, adding up to a triple-monitor setup.

There are some limitations here to keep in mind. First, the GPU in question needs to support the number of displays required. Modern integrated CPUs usually support up to three displays, so that would cover two external units as well as the internal screen. Dedicated GPUs usually support three or more.

Before you go out and buy monitors, you need to confirm with your laptops manufacturer via their web page, manual, or customer support whether your particular laptop supports separate monitors on each display output.

Thanks to USB-C technology a port included on most new computers today you can buy a hub that lets you connect multiple displays to just that one little port. For example, the j5create hub includes four HDMI ports that let you drive four monitors from your single USB-C port.

Most people think USB-C only supports two external monitors. The reality is that USB-C is limited only by your resolution needs. The typical use of the USB-C port is to connect two 4K monitors or a single 8K display.

However devices like j5create stretch these limits by providing four display ports with 1080P resolution , plus a 48 kHz audio signal as well.

Setup is extremely easy: As soon as you plug in a second monitor, your computer will recognize it without requiring any extra software or a complicated setup process. You can, however, take a few optional steps to configure it exactly as you like it. The exact process will depend on your computers operating system.

On Windows, tap Windows+P to switch between four display modes: PC screen only , Duplicate , Extend , or Second screen only . Most of the time, youll want the Extend option, which will allow you to open apps and windows independently on both screens. To further configure your second display, open the Start menu, click the Settingsicon , and choose System, followed by Display. From here, you can configure the brightness, resolution, and orientation of both screens. If youre using two displays as one extended screen, you can also use this menu to set which monitor will be on the left and which on the right.

Over on macOS, open the Apple menu, choose System Preferences, and then click Displays. Under the Arrangement tab , you can change the relative positions of your displayswhich one is on the left screen and which is on the right. Using the Mirror Displays checkbox, you can also switch between mirrored mode and extended mode . In addition, you can set the screen resolution from this same menu.

How To Set Up To Connect Two Monitors

Since everything is ready, you can start connecting the two monitors to your laptop.

Note: Connect your monitors while your laptop is turned on. In most cases, Windows will detect when a new monitor is plugged in.

For example, I have VGA and HDMI ports on my laptop, and my external monitors have cables for VGA and HDMI ports as well:

    1) Plug the cable of the first external monitor to the correct video port on your laptop. So I plug the VGA cable of the first external monitor into the VGA port on my laptop.

    2) Plug the cable of the second external monitor to the other correct port on your laptop. So I plug the HDMI cable of the second external monitor into the HDMI port on my laptop.

    3) On your laptop, right click an empty area of your desktop, if you are using Windows 10, click Display settings,

if you are using Windows 8/7, click Screen resolution.

    4) You will see three displays labeled with 1, 2 and 3 in display mode. Generally speaking, the display 1 is the monitor of your laptop, and the display 2 and 3 are the external monitors.

    5) Click the display 2, and select Extend desktop to this display in Multiple displays, and click Apply.

    6) Click the display 3, and select Extend desktop to this display in Multiple displays, and click Apply.

    7) Click OK to finish the settings, and you can now use the three monitors on your laptop.

    Using Two External Monitors

The 15-inch screen in your laptop may not be enough, so consider adding a second monitor. Here’s where it gets a little tricky.

Firstly, you need to find out what other ports you have available on your Windows laptop. Are there any spare HDMI or miniDP ports? If you do, you’re in luck! All you have to do is get a new display compatible with your available port, and you’re ready to go.

But if all you have is an extra USB-C port, you have to check if it supports transmitting a video signal. You can look at this table Kensington made to see if you can plug a monitor into your USB-C outlet.

The rule of thumb is if you see a Thunderbolt or DisplayPort logo beside the USB-C port, then it will work with a screen. All you need is a proper USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to DisplayPort/miniDP cable.

But if you don’t see any of the above logos beside your USB-C port, you can check your laptop’s manual. You can also contact your laptop’s maker and ask if it will support a video signal. If they say that it doesn’t support any display protocol, I’m afraid you can’t connect a monitor via that port.

If you don’t have an extra video port and absolutely need to have that extra monitor, get a USB 3.0 to HDMI adapter. It will be able to display your screen at full resolution, depending on the adapter.

Connecting Another Monitor With A Wireless Connection

    Le Slide

Miracast is a wireless technology that projects the image from your computer screen onto another monitor, TV screen, projector, or streaming media player that also supports Miracast. You can use this to share what you are doing on your computer, present a slide show, or even play your favorite game on a larger screen.

If you have problems connecting a TV to the computer, consider the following.

Check Available Ports On Your Laptop

Then you may need to check the ports on your laptop. Generally a computer or laptop should include any of these four ports:

Display Port can provide an interface with an optional audio high-definition content protection.Digital Video Interface is usually color-coded with white plastic and labels.Video Graphics Array is normally color-coded with blue plastic and labels.High-Definition Multimedia Interface can connect all kinds of video devices and provide sounds through the cable.

You can check the ports on the back or on the sides of your laptop. In addition to the ports on your laptop, the monitors should have the corresponding ports as well. That will save your time and money to connect them. Otherwise you will need to buy an extra adapter, such as DVI to HDMI adapter to have them match.

If you dont have the match ports for your laptop and your monitor

If the ports in your laptop is not the same as the connectors in your monitor cables, dont give up hope. There is workaround! You can try one of the methods below to continue:

    • Use an adapter, such as an HDMI to DVI adapter. This works if you have two different ports for your laptop and your monitor.
    • Use a switch spillter, such as a Display splitter to have two HDMI ports. This works if you have only one HDMI port on your laptop but you need to HDMI ports.
    • Use a docking station, and it works in various circumstances.

How To Maximize Desk Space With A 3 Monitor Setup

Placing multiple monitors directly onto a working desk is cumbersome, looks messy and a poor use of desk space.

Using a monitor stand is the best option for the most efficient use of desk space that looks great.

I prefer using a monitor stand with a desk mount opposed to a free standing desk stand. Desk mounts clamp to the back of your desk and take up far less desk top surface area than a free standing desk stand.

Help Me Laptop: How Do I Add A 2nd Display

    ByBrian Westoverpublished 7 April 18

You know your laptop can do a lot, but you might not always know all the details that tell you how to do it. Case in point: How the heck do you add a second or third display to your computer?

Tom’s Guide forum user ziyan.tejani1107 is trying to figure out this very problem.

I have an Acer Aspire V Nitro 17.3 laptop with a GTX 965m graphics card. I currently have it connected to an external monitor via a HDMI cable. I want to connect a second external display to my laptop. I have multiple USB 3.0 ports, and I have a USB C port available. How could I connect my other display to my laptop? Which cable would I need and would I need any adapters? Am I actually able to have 2 external displays usable for my laptop at once?

This isn’t an uncommon question. No matter how nice the display is on your laptop, even the best looking 17-inch display won’t offer the view-filling real estate that a larger display will. While we might love 4K displays and big-screen monitors, even a simple 20-inch, 1080p monitor will offer a big improvement over the display on your laptop.

But connecting your extra monitors may not be as simple as just plugging into an HDMI port. The vagaries of hardware and software support may leave some users out of luck when they try to add an extra display, or you might run into the simple problem of having one plug on your monitor and a different connection on your PC.

How To Connect Three Monitors To A Laptop Using A Docking Station

You may have a laptop where the manufacturer offers an optional docking station that you can buy separately or you can get a generic docking station. A docking station that was specifically designed for your brand and model of laptop may have the advantage of a cleaner look on your desk. You can usually tell whether your laptop is suitable for a matching docking station by looking at the bottom of your laptop. Check if thereâs a docking station connector slot. And while youâre looking at the bottom of your laptop, look for its specific model number. You can Google the model number + âdocking stationâ to shop for specific docking stations for your model of laptop. That doesnât mean that you canât go for a generic docking station though. Generic docking stations typically use a USB type A or USB type C port on your laptop and offer a bunch of connectivity options, including LAN connectivity, HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA and others.Speaking of others: the method described above to connect three monitors to a laptop assumes that your monitors have an HDMI connection. HDMI is a very popular connection type that most modern monitors have, but you should always check the connection interfaces of your monitor before you purchase a specific adapter.Other popular connections on monitors include âDisplayPortâ, DVI and VGA . The input connectors on monitors are usually marked, like for example this DisplayPort and HDMI connections here:
