How To Boost My Laptop Wifi Signal

Don't Miss

Using A Range Extender

Improve Wireless Signal / boosting wifi reception on laptop / Double Your Internet Speed for Free
  • 1Buy a Wi-Fi extender. Wi-Fi range extenders do exactly what their name implies: they take your router’s signal and repeat it so that you can connect to the network without moving your router or your Internet-connected item. There are countless models of extender available both in stores and online, so just pick one with high reviews and a comfortable price tag.
  • You can expect to spend between $35 and $100 on a decent Wi-Fi extender.
  • Most Wi-Fi extenders will work with multiple router models, but buy one from the same company which made your router if possible.
  • 2Understand that Wi-Fi extenders vary. While the following instructions comprise the bulk of Wi-Fi extenders’ setup processes, you will want to check your Wi-Fi extender’s manual for specific instructions on setting up the extender with your router.
  • 3Find a wall outlet near your router. It’s best to set up your range extender while in the same room as your router, so try to find a place to plug in your range extender within 20 feet of your router.XResearch source
  • If your extender is wireless, turn it on and then skip this step and the next one.
  • 4Plug in your extender. Attach your extender to the wall outlet via the extender’s plug. If the extender has any lights on it, you should see them turn on.
  • 5Press the WPS button on the extender. The WPS button should be on the front or side of the extender, though you may need to check your extender’s documentation to find it.
  • Purchase A Better Internet Plan

Its easy to underestimate just how many devices these days connect to the internet via WiFi. From computers and mobile phones to various smart home products and appliances, these WiFi-connected devices consume a substantial amount of bandwidth, and not all internet plans can provide it.

If youve been paying for the same internet plan for the last 10 years, then you should look at what other options are available and considering upgrading. You might even be able to save some money since the prices of fast internet plans have gone down substantially since the early days of broadband internet.

Check Out Antenna Upgrades And Omnidirectional Antennas

Another alternative is to upgrade your antenna. Some router models are equipped with a visible antenna, and high-speed internet customers with these models are in luck. Why? Because some third-party manufacturers produce replacement antenna with more robust signals than the ones provided by your cable and internet provider. Some antennas are omnidirectional, so their positioning is irrelevant to maximizing your hardware upgrade you wont even have to angle the antenna to boost your Wi-Fi signal.

Find The Best Spot For Your Router

    boost

The next thing to consider when youre trying to optimize your Wi-Fi signal is where you place your router. In general, the farther your router is from the devices connected to its signal, the weaker that signal is going to be.

Ideally, you want to place your router in a central location in your home so youre never too far from it even if youre moving about with your mobile devices. If you use Wi-Fi primarily for streaming to televisions in your home, youll benefit from the router being closer to those TVs.

Other things that can help are making sure the router is elevated and that its not surrounded by other electronic devices.

Make Sure Youre On The Right Frequency Band

Modern routers work primarily on two radio frequency bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The band you use for your connections can affect your speeds and the quality of your connections at different distances from your router.

The 2.4 GHz band has been used for Wi-Fi since the beginning, but its also used for a ton of other wireless communications, so the airwaves in this frequency can be a little crowded. This band also has slower max speeds than 5 GHz, but its range is better.

The two frequency bands often appear as two separate Wi-Fi networks. So to reorganize your connections, you should log off incorrect bands and reconnect to the correct band on each device.

Connections best for 5 GHz band:

    • Gaming consoles

Connections best for 2.4 GHz band:

    • Smart speakers
    • Security cameras

How to Make Your Laptop’s Wifi Signal Faster On Windows 10/8/7 [Tutorial]

If you have a dual band router, you have the option of using either the 2.4GHz band or the 5GHz band. You will usually get better performance if you select 5GHz, because its less commonly used and there will be less interference.

The caveat here is that the 5GHz signal doesnt travel as far and doesnt fare as well with obstructions as the 2.4GHz band does, so it isnt a great option for devices that are located far away from the router. You can learn more about the differences between the 2.4 and 5GHz bands here.

    Upgrade To A Better Router

If the weak or slow Wi-Fi continues despite moving the router, consider upgrading it to a better one.

The oldest to newest Wi-Fi standard are: 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac and Wi-Fi 6. If you have an older wireless “b” or “g” router you should consider replacing it with a newer device that offers longer ranges and faster connection speeds.

Why not be cheeky and ask your ISP to send you an updated wireless router? If you’ve been a customer for a while it should help you out, but watch out if it asks you to sign up for a new contract.

A common misconception is that the latest Wi-Fi standard gives you the best performance and range. While that is partially true, the best speeds come at the expense of range, so you’ll actually get the best coverage from a router with really good performance using 2.4GHz, not 5GHz. For more, click .

However, this is where mesh Wi-Fi comes in, and it’s why we highly recommend you invest in a kit, which can cost less than a single router in some cases.

Remember that your devices also need to support these newer Wi-Fi standards. But rather than buy a new laptop you can buy a USB wireless adapter from as little as £10 that plugs into a USB port. You can also add a new wireless adapter inside a desktop PCs case or via a PC Card slot, but good luck trying that with a Mac! Check out our round up of the best 802.11ac USB Wi-Fi adapters.

Select A Good Place For Your Router

Not all places are equally suitable for your router. To start with, you want to avoid placing your router close to metal objects and appliances that emit electromagnetic waves. Metal is the top disrupter of a WiFi signal, and its presence close to a WiFi router can easily create a large dead zone.

Other materials, including glass, wood, plastics, foam, and cardboard, can also disrupt a WiFi signal but their influence of WiFi signal strength tends to less severe. Keep in mind that many buildings use metal studs for the particle board mounting, and placing your router close to them would be a bad idea. When in doubt, use a handheld stud finder or at least a stud finder app on your smartphone.

Strictly speaking, all household appliances emit electromagnetic waves to some degree, even fluorescent lightbulbs, circuit breakers, and electric razors. The biggest emitters of electromagnetic waves tend to be found in the kitchen, and they include stoves, microwave ovens, and dishwashers.

Other problematic appliances are washing machines, tumble dryers, televisions, cordless phones, and radiant heaters. If you have any of these appliances at home, keep your WiFi router as far away from them as possible to boost WiFi signal.

Ideally, you also want to keep a safe distance from electric wires. To cover an area with an even WiFi signal, you should place your WiFi router roughly in the center. You can slightly boost your wireless signal by elevating the router above the floor level.

Here Are All The Ways You Can Improve Wi

    BySimon Jary, SVP Consumer| 03 Aug 2020

Wi-Fi is just as essential as running water for many people, especially those who work from home. So when it’s slow or keeps dropping out – and ruining your Zoom call or interrupting your Spotify stream – it can be very frustrating indeed.

Your situation may be even worse than this: no signal at all in some parts of the house, or such a weak connection that it’s not good enough for loading a web page, let alone checking who’s at the front door via your video doorbell.

These Wi-Fi ‘black spots’ are most often caused by too much distance from the wireless router , thick brick or stone walls, and interference from other devices.

There are several ways you can fix this, but it all depends upon how much money you want to spend and where the problem areas are. Here are the main six ways to extend your Wi-Fi:

  • Move your existing router to a better position
  • Buy a new, better router
  • Buy a powerline networking adapter set with Wi-Fi
  • Switch to 2.4GHz from 5GHz
  • Now let’s look in more detail at each of those options.

    Last Resort: Contact Your Isp

How to Boost Your Laptop WiFi With an Antenna

If all else fails, consider calling your ISP. Yes, it’s usually one of the most unpleasant things you can do with your time, but it could save you hours, days or weeks of future frustration.

If you’ve upgraded your Internet package and you’re using hardware supplied by your service provider, they can get the right hardware in your hands. Time Warner Cable, for instance, recently rolled out its TWC MAXX upgrades in parts of Charlotte, North Carolina, which call for upgraded hardware. Without a newer modem and router, you may not experience the full effects of the free upgrade.

If it’s any other issue, they can usually help diagnose the problem and deploy a fix. Often, unfortunately, those solutions will come at the expense of your own purse.
