Inserting The Graphics Card
This is an optional step. If youre using an Intel or AMD CPU with integrated graphics and dont plan on serious gaming, you may not need or want a discrete graphics card. Many AMD CPUs, as well as high-end Intel models, dont have on-board graphics, though, and will require a graphics card in order to connect and output to your monitor.
To install the GPU, you’ll likely have to remove some slot covers on the back of the case, so that the HDMI, DVI and other ports show through, letting you can connect your monitor later.
Connect the GPU into the PCIe X16 slot on the motherboard . If necessary, plug the PCIe power connectors from the power supply into the card. .

You can think of a form factor the same way you think about the size of a car. Just like a compact, mid-sized, or full-sized car, motherboards have similar sizes. Compact or small form factor PC’s use Micro or Mini-ITX motherboards, mid-sized builds use ATX sized motherboards and, finally, full sized builds use E-ATX form factors.
What Does This Mean And What Should You Buy
Ultimately, as a photographer, you want the best combination of speed and storage, which isnt available in one medium.
This means buying both offers you the best outcome. I would recommend a 500GB to 1TB NVME for your operating system and current working files, and hard drives for long term storage.
In my case, I have my primary operating system and my photos that Im currently editing on my NVME, and, after a month, I move them to external hard drives.
With an unlimited budget, you could buy only solid-state, but you will pay a premium for it.
The Last Of The Cable Connections
OK, just a few more cables to go until we try turning the PC on. Make sure the connectors for any fans are plugged into the motherboard fan headers. Then, attach the front-panel audio cable, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 case connectors to those headers. Youll want to consult your motherboard manual for this, because their location varies by motherboard model.
Lastly, there are the tiny front-panel connectors, including power, reset, HDD activity light, etc. Those need to go to the appropriate pins on the motherboard (usually in the bottom-right corner if your motherboard is mounted in the traditional orientation. Youll need to consult your motherboard manual to see where each should go, as this also can differ based on board make and model.
Double check that youre using the right headers. These things are small , so its easy to mess them up if youre not paying close attention.
Choose The Right Processor
The CPU affects both livestreaming and gaming performance, so with a single PC streaming setup, make sure your processor is up to the task. In this type of streaming setup, sub-par streams are usually the result of a weak/inadequate processor. We recommend at least R7/I7 level processor for stable high quality streaming.

The motherboard we’re using for this extreme PC build is the Asus ROG Maximus XIII Hero. This motherboard supports DDR4 RAM up to speeds of 5333MHz in dual-channel format. That’s three different things to bear in mind just in relation to one component.

What Size Pc Should I Build
When choosing the size of your PC here are some things to keep in mind. Small form factor PC’s present some limitations on the components you can use in your PC and, given their size, introduce build challenges. ATX or mid-sized PCs are the most common builds and provide the largest compatibility options. They are also among the easiest PCs to assemble. Finally, E-ATX provides far more options and power but the size of the PC can be daunting and will take up a lot of space. This is often the most costly build option.

Build Your Own Gaming Laptop
For a less complicated gaming laptop that has a keyboard, try this DIY laptop project.
Relying on affordable components from Amazon , the secret to this project is the case. Barebones laptop cases can be purchased online, featuring just the display, keyboard, motherboard, and CPU/GPU. These can be bought as-is, or with the chosen customizations added by the retailer.

Starting Your Machine For The First Time
Now your first gaming PC is built. Congratulations! But it’s not all over yet. You need to install Windows, some games and other software then get to the actual fun of playing games while bathing in the glory of having hand-built your own machine.
You’re going to need to plug those in to get started with the next bit.
- Access to the Windows Installation Media tool
Using the Windows Installation Media tool you can turn your USB stick into a bootable drive – this means you’ll be able to run the Windows installation program directly from it.
Run the tool, follow the instructions and install it on your USB stick using another PC. Once that’s done, plug it into your freshly built PC and turn it on. You’ll need to then press DEL as soon as the computer starts up and enter the BIOS. From there, look for the boot menu – this is an order through which the computer tries to load and select the USB drive you’ve plugged in as the first drive to try. This means when you exit – save the changes and reset – the machine will then load from the USB drive and prompt you to install Windows.
If you don’t have access to another PC or laptop then you can buy a physical disc of Windows, but you’ll also need to install an optical DVD drive in your PC. Borrowing a friend’s computer is an easier option.

Install An Operating System Drivers And Updates
Preferably before the build process, you’ll want to make a USB install drive for either Windows 10 or the Linux build of your choice. For Windows 10, simply navigate to Microsofts Download page and click the Download Tool Now button. Youll download and run the Media Creation tool which will turn any 8GB or larger USB drive into a Windows install disk. If you dont already have a Windows 10 key, you can get one cheap or for free. If you have a problem with the OS, you can try to reset Windows 10 to factory settings.
Plug the USB drive into your new computer, power on and you should boot into your operating system installer, which will step you through the process. If the system doesnt access your drive, you may need to navigate to the BIOS and make sure your USB key is available as a boot device and that it’s placed in the boot order before your internal drive or drives.
Once you’ve installed your operating system, when you first connect to the internet, Windows 10 is pretty good these days at getting device drivers. However, you should still go to the manufacturers product pages for your parts to make sure you have or get the latest updates.
Finally, when your OS and drivers are all updated, its time to start using your PC! The one that you built. Install some games, stream some movies, edit some photo or video, chat on Discord–whatever it is you like to do with your PC. And remember: Whenever youre ready to add more features or performance, you can always upgrade.
Storage Drives And Ram
Many laptop manufacturers will allow you to upgrade your gaming laptop. These laptop manufacturers allow consumers to replace the internal drive of their laptop with a bigger one. You can add another drive to your laptops storage capacity by using the second drive bay.
Consider buying the SSD or solid-state drive when purchasing a storage drive. The traditional hard drive, or HDD, is the type. SSDs have a lower performance, while hard drives are more reliable.
Consider having 16GB RAM for your gaming laptop. 8GB RAM is the minimum you can get if you are on a tight budget. Make sure your laptop has enough memory card slots before you purchase RAM. Once all the components are ready, it is time to assemble your gaming notebook.
First, open the shell by turning it upside down so that the bottom faces upwards. Install the RAM, CPU, and Wi-Fi card into their sockets. You can do the same for your hard drive and GPU.
Next, install the operating system you have chosen. After you have completed all these steps, screw the bottom cover back onto the shell. You are now ready to begin gaming. Keep your gaming laptop clean and well maintained.

In our mind, it’s always worth getting the latest hardware with a view to future-proofing of your system. It’s counter-productive to spend all your hard earned money on something that will simply need upgrading in a year or two.
The utter joy of building your own gaming PC is if you build solid foundations then you’ll only need to upgrade a couple of parts every few years to keep your PC going and going for years to come.
It’s worth spending extra on the core parts of the machine – the CPU and motherboard as these are the foundation of the computer and much harder to replace and upgrade in future.

How Much Ram Should I Buy
The amount of RAM your computer needs depends on what you plan on using it for. At a minimum we would recommend no less than 8GB of RAM, but if you are only using your PC for simple daily tasks, like web browsing, you might be able to get away with as little as 4GB. How To Install An Intel Processor
Instead of jutting from the processor, pins now reside in modern Intel sockets on motherboards, making CPU installation easy. This part of the socket is called the contact array. Absolutely do not bend or touch these pins!
The square metal bracket holding the CPU in place is the load plate, and its raised and lowered using the load lever. When clamped down, the end of the load lever tucks under a hook to keep everything in place. When you unbox your motherboard, the contact array will be covered with a piece of plastic. This plastic will pop out once you open the bracket, so wait to open it until youre ready to install your processor.
First, open the load plate. Do this by gently pushing down on the load arm and moving it out sideways from under the hook, and then raising it up all the way. The hooks lever action opens the plate, which you can easily flip up. At this point, the plastic piece will come loose. If it doesnt pop out, gently remove it.
As shown above, the CPU itself should have a small half-circle notch on each side of the chip. With the contacts facing down, there should be only one direction where the notches line up with the notches in the socket. Pick up your processor by the sides, clamping it lightly between your fingertips. Here, you want to avoid touching the bottom of the processor.
Remember, the notches in the processor should align with those in the socket. If in doubt, start again and double-check.
