Other Considerations When Buying A Macbook

Using Apple Computers : Buying a Mac Laptop

There are a few other things to bear in mind when deciding how to buy a MacBook. The MacBook Air lacks the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar, which is a touch-sensitive control strip that offers app and keyboard shortcuts. The 16-inch MacBook Pro, meanwhile, has the best speaker system of any MacBook the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air have similar audio setups, with the 13-inch MacBook Pro just pulling ahead.

Finally, you should consider how many ports you need with your laptop buy one with too few and you will need a handful of dongles and accessories. Right now, your choices are determined by the chip inside the Mac you choose. M1 MacBooks come with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, which run at up to 40Gbps. Intel-based MacBooks like the 16-inch MacBook Pro and certain models of the 13-inch MacBook Pro come with four Thunderbolt 3 ports.

Wondering About All The Touch Bar Buzz

Apple made waves with its latest drastic innovation on the MacBook Pro, replacing the traditional function keys with a touch sensitive screen called the Touch Bar, adding versatility and flexibility in terms of usage possibilities. The Touch Bar is intuitive to use and automatically adapts to what you are doing on screen, to show the relevant tools you may need, whether that is a volume rocker while you listen to music or a colour wheel while you edit a photo. Users can interact with the Touch Bar in a variety of ways, with a wide range of accepted gesture controls further simplifying the user experience. Apple has integrated built-in controls for most native apps on the MacBook, with numerous major 3rd party apps offering Touch Bar integration as well. The Touch Bar also houses the fingerprint sensor for Touch ID, to ensure top of the line security and privacy protection. So whether its sending an email, predictive suggestions while typing or formatting a document, the Touch Bar simply makes your life easier.

Is Now A Good Time To Buy A Mac Mini

We thoroughly recommend the Mac mini. It offers the same specs as the other M1 Macs for much less money, the only difference being the absence of a screen. But since you can buy a decent 4K display for less than £300/$300 we don’t think that is a big problem.

We would note that if you need something a bit more powerful a new Mac mini is said to be in the works at Apple which will slot in at the top of the range. That model may utilise a M1X or M2 chip and support more RAM.

Touch Bar But No Touching

There’s a unique aspect to the MacBook Pro models that you must consider if the “Pro” part of the name applies to you: the Touch Bar. This is a long, thin, touch-enabled OLED screen that comes mounted forward of the MacBook Pro’s keyboard. The Touch Bar is unique to Apple and highly specialized. It’s Apple’s answer to touch gestures in Windows 10, and it’s most useful in professional apps like the Adobe Creative Suite and Apple’s Final Cut Pro X, which let you use the Touch Bar to scrub through a video timeline, switch tool selections, and much more. This feature is not available on the MacBook Air.

The Touch Bar is not a substitute for the touch screens that you’ll find on many Windows ultraportables, however. You cannot use it to interact with basic screen elements like the menu buttons on websites, nor can you use it to draw on the screen. An Apple iPad or a Windows laptop is your best alternative for these tasks. Fortunately, the trackpads on all Apple laptops are excellent, with oversize glass surfaces and virtual “haptic” feedback instead of a physical click mechanism.

If you’re a video or photo editor, you’ll want to strongly consider the 16-inch model with an AMD Radeon Pro graphics card, which can speed up editing tasks. The 13-inch MacBook Pro model comes with either Intel integrated graphics or M1 graphics, but does not offer the choice for a discrete GPU.

Mac Vs Windows Vs Chromebooks

Now is the worst time to buy any MacBook laptop from Apple ...

MacOS, Windows 10 and ChromeOS all have their own strengths and weaknesses. MacOS is buttery smooth and is the go-to operating system for many creative industries, but it also requires you to shell out a huge amount of money on a premium Apple device.

MacBooks run smoothly and can keep viruses at bay, but they aren’t cheap.

Windows, meanwhile is available on a huge range of devices from ultra-budget to super-premium and, for many, is still the operating system they know best. But it’s not without its downsides: Windows 10 updates are still a major sticking point for many people, and the fact that Windows 10 doesn’t run particularly smoothly on very cheap laptops.

That’s where ChromeOS comes in. This operating system is little more than a fancy web browser, with web apps that work best when connected to the internet. There’s a range of budget devices available, and a few premium options as well. There’s no faffing with huge updates and since everything is in a browser, there shouldn’t be any problems with programs crashing either.

Who This Is For And When To Buy

The best reason to buy a MacBook is that you need or prefer macOS to Windows. The operating system is stable and easy to use, but more important, it integrates well with iPhones and iPadsfor example, iMessages and SMS messages sent from your Mac also appear on your iPhone and vice versa, and features such as AirDrop and iCloud make it easy to share notes, pictures, videos, reminders, contacts, passwords, bookmarks, and other data between your devices.

Macs are also a good choice if you want great support. Apples tech support is routinely rated above that of most if not all other PC and phone makers, and Apple Stores and Apple authorized service providers offer accessible in-person tech support and repairs in many locations.

And MacBooks that use Apple processors instead of Intel processors are better than Intel MacBooks and most Windows laptops in some key ways. Apples processors have much better performance and faster graphics, and they get stellar battery life. Their batteries are also less prone to draining quickly when youre using an energy-hogging app like Zoom or Google Chrome.

Goodbye Intel: Testing The Apple M1

Once all of this transitional dust settles, M1 Macs are going to be significantly faster across the board compared with the Intel Macs that preceded them. To demonstrate, we ran a handful of tests on our recommended M1 MacBook Air and Pro configurations, the Intel Core i5 MacBook Air configuration that we recommended earlier in 2020, and a fully loaded Intel Core i9 iMac from 2020.4 Heres what we ran:

  • The Geekbench 5 benchmark, which is good at showing how processors do when performing for short periods of time. This includes both a single-core test, which measures the processors speed when just one of its cores is active, and a multi-core test that uses all available processor cores.
  • Maxon Cinebench R23, which can be used to demonstrate how processors perform over longer periods of time. It also has both single- and multi-core tests, and we ran the 30-minute version of the test.
  • Transcoding an 87-minute movie using HandBrakes 1080p30 Fast preset, to test how quickly each Mac can encode a video.5
  • Running devMEremenkos Xcode Benchmark in using Apples Xcode development environment. This tests how long it takes a Mac to compile code, as youd do before you uploaded an app to one of Apples App Stores.

We chose all of these tests because theyve already been optimized for Apple silicon, and because they represent a mix of basic benchmarks plus activities that actual people do with their Macs.

How to Buy a Laptop

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is Apple’s high-end, performance-focused laptop, featuring 9th-generation Intel chips, the Magic Keyboard, and Touch Bar, with prices starting at $2,399.

Announced in November of 2019, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is the the oldest Mac laptop still in Apple’s lineup and it is nearing the end of its product cycle. Apple is phasing Intel-based Macs out of its product lineup in favor of its own more powerful and efficient custom silicon chips, and a major overhaul of the high-end 16-inch MacBook Pro is expected to arrive later in 2021.

Most users who are looking to buy the 16-inch MacBook Pro should wait for updated models with a MagSafe charging connector, more ports, and Apple silicon chips to launch later this year.

If you are looking for a more portable Mac laptop, you may wish to consider the M1 MacBook Air, which starts at $999. The M1 MacBook Air is $300 cheaper than the M1 MacBook Pro, and offers the same chip with many of the same features, such as the Magic Keyboard, Touch ID, and two Thunderbolt ports. The only advantages to buying the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro over the MacBook Air are the Touch Bar, active cooling, a longer battery life, a brighter display, and speakers with high dynamic range. Unless these features are worth the additional $300 in your personal use-case, you should buy the MacBook Air instead.

8 things you need to do before your new MacBook Pro ...

We’ll mention this quickly here as Apple does still sell the entry-level 2.3GHz dual-core iMac. This model has not been updated since 2017 . It lacks the Retina display and only offers 7th-gen dual-core processor and Intel Iris Plus Graphics. The only thing it has going for it is the fact that it features an SDXC slot, four USB-A slots, two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 slots, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

The 27in iMac is a completely different beast to the 24in model, with fast 10th generation Intel processors and discrete graphics cards. The bigger 5K display is also a bonus.

It used to be that the design was identical to the smaller iMac model, but with the arrival of the 24in iMac came a redesign. As yet the larger iMac model hasn’t had the attention of Apple’s design team, it still looks pretty much the same as it did a decade ago. But we do believe a redesign is coming with an even bigger display, expect that to land later in 2021.

What Is The Best Macbook

From underpowered to one of the fastest ultrathin laptops around, the new MacBook Air with M1 is the best Mac for most people. It takes a familiar design and turbocharges it with record-setting performance and all-day battery life. Along with those speed and endurance boosts, the new M1 chip brings iOS and iPadOS apps to Mac for the first time ever. With M1, there is little reason to skip out on the MacBook Air.

That said, if you need better-sustained performance, you might want to opt for the MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Where the MacBook Air is fanless, the MacBook Pro has a traditional cooling system so you can run demanding programs for hours without worrying about overheating. Most people will be fine with the Air, but power users should consider stepping up to the Pro. Like the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro has an incredibly fast SSD and runs on Apple’s gorgeous new Big Sur OS.

What about the Intel-powered MacBooks that weren’t updated to M1 yet? Well, they aren’t completely irrelevant. So far, Apple only refreshed the MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt 3 ports. If you need an additional pair of inputs, the company still sells the top-tier model with four Thunderbolt 3 connections. Again, it runs on aging Intel chips that don’t get the same performance or endurance as the M1 CPU.

    Understanding Model Year Calculus

One of the more interesting challenges in buying used MacBook Pro machines is understanding which model year you’re buying. When buying a used car, you always want to know its model year, but oddly enough, many Mac resellers seem to gloss over the production year in favor of specs.

There is a huge difference between buying a 16GB MacBook Pro from 2015 and one from 2009.

That said, you need to do a certain amount of OS calculus. According to Apple, the new version of MacOS , which came out in September, supports MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs going back to 2012 and MacBooks going back to 2015. These seem to be the same models that will run with MacOS Mojave, which is the current shipping version of the OS.

You can assume that certain models will drop off the OS support list each year. That’s not to say they won’t be usable, but it does mean that upgrades, special features, and security upgrades won’t be available.

For example, I own one 2011 machine, which I couldn’t upgrade when Mojave came out last year. I have three more 2012 machines, which I can upgrade now but will hit OS obsolescence in later this year when MacOS 11 Big Sur is released. There are hacky ways to bypass Apple’s OS limitation, but they’re still hacks.

    Saving On Extra Costs

How to Find MAC Address of your Laptop or Computer
  • 1Compare close offers between resellers. If you find two or three offers that are fairly close in price, read the fine print. Many resellers offer extra deals, such as discount Apple Care warranties or free software. If you plan on purchasing the “extra” anyway, the nominally more expensive computer might be the better deal.
  • The Apple Store rarely offers this kind of deal on computers, except in the educational store.
  • 2Install extra RAM yourself. Upgrading the RAM on a new Mac computer can make it much faster, but buying the RAM yourself is much cheaper than getting it from Apple.XResearch source All you need to install the RAM is steady hands, a screwdriver, and a set of instructions. We’ve got the last covered with guides for Mac Mini, iMac, and MacBook Pro.
  • Not all RAM is created equal. As of late 2015, DDR3 and DDR4 are the latest standards, and comparable in performance for home users.XResearch source
  • 3Consider buying hard drive space separately. Buying a separate hard drive is generally cheaper than upgrading your Mac’s hard drive size at the time of purchase. Just store the files you don’t use as often on the backup.
  • 4Be careful with third-party laptop chargers. Mac laptop chargers are notoriously expensive. Unfortunately, the ultra-cheap options are usually knockoffs that overheat or fail after a short time. It’s best to stick with chargers made by Apple.
  • Even used laptops usually come with a charger, so you don’t need to worry about this for a while.
