Screen Care Is Like Skincare

Just like solar damage, screen damage is cumulative. The more pressure you apply, the more abrasive a product you use, and the more often you use it, the greater the damage youre inflicting on the protective layer of your display and the delicate sensors underneath it.

Maybe you can get away with using a high percentage of alcohol or even a window cleaner on your laptop screen once or twice. But if you keep at it, eventually youll see the deleterious effects.

Youll see discoloration, lines, vertical and horizontal sometimes it looks pretty and rainbow-like, Silverman says. Sometimes itll blink and sometimes youll see droplets of water or liquid in the back of the screen. Theres a lot of ways in which damage appears.

And here is the bad newsyou cannot fix it. The only way to get rid of that damage is to replace the screen.

The best way to avoid damaging your screen while cleaning it is to simply keep it from getting dirty in the first place. If you have a laptop, cover the keyboard with a thin microfiber cloth before closing it to prevent finger grease from transferring to the screen. If you have a touchscreen, wash your hands often before you use it, but make sure you let your hands dry completely before you start tappingthe soapy water or liquid hand cleanser from your fingers can easily end up on the screen and corrode it.

Finish Up With The Touchpad And Chassis

The keyboard and screen are squeaky clean, and you can now turn your attention to the touchpad and chassis to remove oily fingerprints and smudges. Use the same microfiber cloth used on the display, or, if it’s particularly dirty, dampen a new cloth. As mentioned, isopropyl alcohol can be used here at your own discretion, especially if you’re looking to disinfect. If you’d rather not use alcohol, the same cleaning solution used on the screen can be used to good effect.

A clean computer is a happy computer.

Wipe down the touchpad with small circular motions to remove any oil from your fingers. Do the same on the palm rests and keycaps. Once the inside of the laptop is clean, finish everything off by closing the laptop and repeating the same circular motion on the lid and bottom chassis. Dampen the cleaning cloth as needed while you clean.

When you remove the dust from the components, the cooling systems regain their actual performance. There are two types of dust, large flakes lying around and fine-grained dust. Wipe Down The Display

Now that you’ve finished blowing dust, crumbs, and food around with compressed air, it’s time to tackle that spotty, smeared display. If you’re not comfortable using a mix of water and isopropyl alcohol, you can pick up a quality combination of screen cleaning solution and microfiber cloth from WOOSH! for about $16.

Always dampen the cloth instead of spraying any liquid directly onto your display. The key word here is “dampen.” Don’t oversaturate the cloth and, if you do, wring it out before wiping down your display. I find that circular motions work best, especially on the spots that are particularly difficult to remove.

Dont Spray Directly Onto The Screen

When you spray your cleaning solution directly onto the screen, the liquid will run down the screen and get into the bezels, giving the liquid direct access to the inside of your TV or monitor.

While you might be quick enough to catch it before it does more damage, its better to spray your cleaning solution on a microfiber cloth and wipe the screen down instead of directly applying the screen. This is especially true when cleaning the screen of your laptop.

You’ll also want to log out of all accounts before wiping your MacBook’s drive. Start with iCloud, Find My Mac and iMessage. Then look for individual software accounts you may need to deregister. If you use a browser other than Safari, such as Chrome or Firefox, you should sign out of those as well. Basically, if it’s got personal account information, you’ll want to sign out.

The latter is memory that holds onto settings that the MacBook needs before loading MacOS. On startup, press and hold Option-Command-P-R to reset the NVRAM.

Can I Use Water And Soap To Clean My Laptop Screen

If you have a PC laptop that’s loaded with a regular LCD screen, you should not use disinfecting wipes, because manufacturers like Hewlett-Packard say that active ingredients found in both Clorox and Lysol wipes could damage your screen. This HP customer support web page explains why: “Do not use any of the following chemicals or any solutions that contain them: Acetone, ethyl alcohol, toluene, ethyl acid, ammonia, or methyl chloride,” it reads. “Plastic and glass cleaners containing ammonia may leave a glare-causing film”

Should you be using soap, then? Forté clarifies you shouldn’t bother using soap and water to clean an LCD screen if you can’t use a Lysol wipe on it in the first place. Some soap varieties may contain the ingredients known to affect LCD screens.

Microfiber cloths are made with specialized fibers that have more surface area to trap dirt, grime, and germs, Forté says, and they’re better designed with edges to lift bacteria up off your screen. While a dry microfiber cloth can’t disinfect an LCD screen like a Lysol wipe can, using one to wipe down your screen won’t put it in danger of permanent damage that cleaners could pose.

How To Clean Your Laptop’s Keyboard

To clean your laptop’s keyboard, you will need a can of compressed air. According to an article by PCMag, it is recommended that you start from the bottom and work your way up. It is also important to “approach the keyboard from different angles, such as from the side, to get everything.”

PCMag’s article also notes that the can of compressed air is pretty much your best friend when cleaning your laptop as you can use it to clean your laptop’s vents and ports.

Once you are done getting rid of the dust and other dirt using the compressed air, take another lint-free cloth and dab some isopropyl rubbing alcohol on it. Use it to gently clean your laptop’s keys. Keep in mind that you should not let any liquid spill beneath the keys of your laptop.

If You Cant Open Your Laptop

Whether you want to upgrade your laptops hardware or just dust it out, manufacturers dont want you to open most laptops. But dust does build up inside a laptop, whether you can open it yourself or not.

Even if you cant open your laptop, you can still attempt to dislodge some of that dust. First, take the laptop somewhere you dont mind getting dusty. You probably dont want to blow dust all over your desk or bed.

RELATED:What You Need to Know About Upgrading Your Laptop’s Hardware

Get a can of compressed air, point it at the laptops cooling vents, and give them a few short bursts of air. With any luck, the jets of air will knock some of the dust loose and it will escape the laptops vents. You wont get all the dust out of the laptop, but at least it will stop plugging up the vents, fans, and whatever else its stuck to. This isnt the ideal way to dust out a laptop, but it may be all you can do.

Exercise caution when doing this. If you aim a blast of compressed air directly at a cooling fan inside a vent, you could cause the cooling fan to spin too quickly. Dont aim the air directly at the fan and give it a long blast. Instead, blow air in short bursts, waiting in between to ensure youre not spinning the fan too quickly.

If your laptop has serious problems with overheating and you cant clean it yourself, you may have to contact the manufacturer for service. If its still under warranty, they should hopefully help you.
