This wikiHow teaches you how to connect a Windows or Mac laptop computer to an external monitor. Since most modern laptops will determine the best way to connect once you’ve plugged them into a monitor, the bulk of this process comes down to selecting the correct cable to bridge the gap between your laptop and your monitor.

Configure Laptop Lid Close Action Settings In Power Options

  • To close the laptops lid and keep it running, go to the Control Panel
  • In the Control Panel, go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options. You can also get Power Options by right clicking on the battery icon in the system tray and selecting Power Options.
  • From the left hand menu, select Choose what closing the lid does. Power options for lid closing open. In the drop down options of when I close the lid select Do nothing. After making these changes, click the Save changes option.
  • From the left hand menu, select Choose what closing the lid does. Power options for lid closing open. In the drop down options of when I close the lid select Do nothing. After making these changes, click the Save changes option.

Now you can close the lid and still the display on the external display wont be disturbed and the system keeps on running. This is the easiest way to run a laptop with lid closed.

Connect A Monitor To Every Output Type

Theres a good chance that your laptop has more than one display output type. For example, the computer this is being written on has both an HDMI port and a Mini-DisplayPort output. The first is wired to the dedicated GPU, and the second is wired to the integrated Intel GPU. Its possible to connect a monitor to both outputs and have both run at the same time. Both monitors should run alongside the internal display, adding up to a triple-monitor setup.

There are some limitations here to keep in mind. First, the GPU in question needs to support the number of displays required. Modern integrated CPUs usually support up to three displays, so that would cover two external units as well as the internal screen. Dedicated GPUs usually support three or more.

Before you go out and buy monitors, you need to confirm with your laptops manufacturer via their web page, manual, or customer support whether your particular laptop supports separate monitors on each display output.

While most of us will be opting for a day-to-day device in the form of a 2-in-1 convertible or notebook, often these compact and portable devices wont cut it. There are certainly times that well require the services of a much larger and more sophisticated display with a smoother refresh rate, brighter colours or a much sharper display – depending on the task at hand.

Thankfully, connecting your device to an external display can give you the best of both worlds – with maximum portability and the best possible visual experience to boot. The benefits of doing so can be immense, allowing you to organise your workflow and tasks in ways you couldnt imagine doing so before. For example, you can kee your Slack or Teams window open on one display while having your inbox open on another window beside a report youre reading. You could even have a document open in full on one display, alongside your source material on another.

Before we talk about how to make the most using several displays through your operating system, we should first touch on the wiring youll need to get yourself set up. The five main types of connectivity options in 2021 include VGA, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C.

How To Connect An External Monitor To The Laptop

In this part of the article, you will be provided with a full detailed guide on how to add more screens to your laptop.

Step 1: Check for the compatibility between your external monitor and your current laptop. Remember to check for the type of cable. You can have a preference for the content of part 3.

Step 2: It is not compulsory but you are highly recommended to turn off the laptop before doing anything. Although new generation laptops are less likely to have a hard disk crash or loss of data, you should always take precautions.

Step 3: Plug in the cable into your laptop. Make sure it fits properly.

Step 4: Turn on your laptop. On certain types of laptops, you will notice a button on the keyboard with a monitor icon. Press on it to transfer to the external monitor. This button usually belongs to the F# key, or sometimes it can even be the Fn key.

Step 5: On some laptops, your external monitor will be automatically recognized and you will not have to press anything.

    Solve Video Adapters And Usb

Dont fear if you have DVI and HDMI, HDMI and DisplayPort, or even VGA and any of the above connections. You can still connect multiple screens using a dual-purpose cable, such as DVI-to-VGA, HDMI-to-DVI, or some other adapter or converter.

An increasing number of laptops use a USB Type-C socket to complicate matters further, carrying data, video, and charging capabilities. USB Type-C is brilliant, but its not always obvious what the port on your laptop can and cannot do. Indeed, some devices only support USB 2.0 connectivity and power transfer and wont carry a video signal at all. In contrast, others offer USB 3.0 but wont let you plug the connection into a monitor. Alas, theres no way of telling beyond trying it out or checking the specifications for the USB controller hardware your laptop uses.

If you attempt to use that same cable to connect your laptop to your monitor, youll be out of luck. Again, theres no way of telling beyond trial and error or buying a specifically video-compatible cable.

Fortunately, cables are pretty cheap, even though USB Type-C is a relatively newer standard. If you need an HDMI to USB Type-C adaptor, For instance, you can get a low-cost converter on Amazon if you dont mind attaching a small USB Type-C to HDMI adapter to the end of your Type-C cable.

    Using An Adapter / Extender

Alternatively, you can add another display output port to your laptop using an adapter or an extender.

This once can be very tricky as I have tried adapters before and every time I tried to use their windows would give me the didnt detect another screen error. After multiple attempts, I was able to use it but it was a lot of work.

You have two choices if you are going down this route, you can get a USB display adapter or an extender for your current port.

    3.1 A USB Display Adapter

A USB-A display adapter simply connects to your USB port and allows you to connect another monitor to its port. I have seen lots of users connecting two monitors to their laptop using this.

Since your laptop already has one display output port, you can get this adapter and connect this second external monitor to the port on the adapter. There is no one adapter that works for all, so it requires some research on your end to find one that might be suitable for your laptop.

I usually search on YouTube for a similar laptop model that I have and see if any other user has had success with and adapters. This is far better than purchasing something that looks like it might work and having to return it.

DisplayPort , like HDMI, can also transmit HD audio and video signals from a laptop to say, an LG monitor. In fact, DP is more common than HDMI on computer screens.

One way to tell that your laptop and monitor have DisplayPort is the appearance of the port itself. DP has five sides, with a slanted upper right-hand corner. HDMI has eight sides, with the left- and right-hand corners appearing identical.

Even if your laptop has both HDMI and DP outputs, your monitor may only have a DP input. In this case, youd need to get a male-to-male DisplayPort cable. One end goes into your laptops DP output, while the other goes into the external screens DP input.

Connect Laptop To Monitor As External Display

How To Connect A Laptop To A Monitor

To connect your laptop with the screen you need to have a cable that connects the laptop with the external monitor, this cable is called an HDMI cable. While you can also use other means to connect to an external display like VGA, DisplayPort and DVI port, HDMI is the most used digital port of all.

Both the monitor and the laptop need HDMI connector port. Just insert one side in your laptop and the other into the monitor and everything on your laptop is now displayed on the monitor as well.

    Adjust The Audio Output Settings

The advantage of using HDMI is that you can also stream audio through the monitor device. For example, if you are connecting an LED TV, it will have the capability of streaming audio in addition to video from the laptop. Just follow the steps below to enable audio through HDMI device.

  • Right-click the speaker icon on the task bar
  • Select playback devices and a small window will appear with sound options
  • Select Digital Audio HDMI
  • Right click and click on set default.
  • Now you will get the sound from the monitor if it has a speaker or an audio/video peripheral.

You can also extend and use the second laptop screen as a monitor in Windows 10.

For me this option is very useful as I keep my laptop running all the time. I have selected to do nothing when I close the lid while the laptop is connected to the power source. This helps me save power as well as use external monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse.

One thing to note here is that if you restart your Windows computer, it will detect and activate the primary screen which is the laptop screen. The secondary screen will automatically get activated and the laptop screen will be turned off on the logon screen. So if you have a broken laptop screen, it will be difficult to start the computer as the laptop will always detect its own LCD as the primary display and will try to activate it until the system is fully booted.

How To Connect An External Monitor To A Laptop Using A Wireless Connection

Some higher-end external monitors also support wireless connections, using a technology called Miracast. We’ve already published articles on what Miracast is and how to use Miracast to project from Windows 10 to a TV or monitor. You can read those if you want in-depth explanations. However, if you don’t have time to read additional material, here’s what you have to do to establish a wireless connection between your laptop and an external monitor that supports Miracast:

Turn on your Miracast-enabled external monitor or smart TV. Keep in mind that, on some monitors , you might also have to check their settings to make sure that wireless connections are enabled on it. Those settings might bear different names, and they might also be found in different places in your external monitor menus, depending on its manufacturer.

NOTE: If your external monitor or TV doesn’t have built-in support for Miracast, you can also buy and use a Miracast dongle such as a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, Belkin Miracast Video Adapter or an ASUS Miracast Wireless Display Dongle. In this case, your external monitor must have an HDMI port available. The Miracast adapter must also be charged using a USB port on your display or via a regular USB charger like those you use for your smartphones.

Setting Up A Second Monitor For Windows

Is connecting a laptop to an external monitor, keyboard ...

After connecting the appropriate wire between a laptop and monitor, make sure you configure Windows to use the secondary display.

Ordinarily, Windows will detect when your monitor is plugged in and turned on. After detecting the video connections, the monitor will then duplicate the content on your laptop screen.

If it doesn’t display anything on the second monitor, you can find the menu using the monitor buttons. On the drop down menu, select the correct input as not all monitors switch to a video input with a signal.

After that, click on the Windows logo at the lower-left corner of your screen. Next, right-click on the desktop and select Display settings. Alternatively, you can click start, go to settings, and then System. You’ll then get options such as text size and orientation on the menu.

Then you may need to check the ports on your laptop. Generally a computer or laptop should include any of these four ports:

Display Port can provide an interface with an optional audio high-definition content protection.Digital Video Interface is usually color-coded with white plastic and labels.Video Graphics Array is normally color-coded with blue plastic and labels.High-Definition Multimedia Interface can connect all kinds of video devices and provide sounds through the cable.

You can check the ports on the back or on the sides of your laptop. In addition to the ports on your laptop, the monitors should have the corresponding ports as well. That will save your time and money to connect them. Otherwise you will need to buy an extra adapter, such as DVI to HDMI adapter to have them match.

If you dont have the match ports for your laptop and your monitor

If the ports in your laptop is not the same as the connectors in your monitor cables, dont give up hope. There is workaround! You can try one of the methods below to continue:

    • Use an adapter, such as an HDMI to DVI adapter. This works if you have two different ports for your laptop and your monitor.
    • Use a switch spillter, such as a Display splitter to have two HDMI ports. This works if you have only one HDMI port on your laptop but you need to HDMI ports.
    • Use a docking station, and it works in various circumstances.
