In case you need more screen space

Connecting two external monitors to a computer can turn it into a genuine productivity powerhouse, but its not always clear how to connect two monitors to a laptop. Depending on your exact model, you have many different options.
How To Connect Laptop To Tv Using Vga
The VGA port is another easy and good method of connecting laptop to PC.
This is readily available for laptops that are up to 5 to 6 years old.
The VGA is connected the same way as the HDMI. The only thing that differs is that VGA is meant for video output only, but you can connect the head speaker cables for the audio output.
Simply switch on your TV and your laptop and connect the VGA cable to both the TV and the laptop. Proceed and connect the headphone to the laptop audio-out port with the TV audio-in. This should automatically instigate the projection on the TV screen.
If it fails, then you have to adjust the settings in your laptop control panel. Navigate the control panel. Locate the display option. Go ahead and set the preferred screen resolution.
In the display drop down, choose TV as one of the display options. This is the go method for owners of old televisions. It is unarguably the best hardware substitute for HDMI.
Use The Internal Monitor With One External Monitor
If all you want is two monitors total, you can use a single external monitor in addition to the one thats built-in to your laptop. Of course, this is not the same as connecting two monitors to your laptop, but we know there will be some who just want a dual-monitor setup and didnt know you can achieve it in this way.
If thats you, then youve found your solution already simply plug the external monitor in wherever the laptop allows and keep the laptops screen open. Both should work side by side.

Googles Chromecast plugs into the back of your TV and mirrors web pages from the Chrome web browser, using your home wireless network to connect to a laptop or mobile device running the browser.
This enables you to stream any internet-based video, and even files stored locally by dragging them directly onto a Chrome tab and casting it. Chromecast streams up to 1080p, and in most circumstances, it delivers smooth, stutter-free video.
That is not an end to the Chromecasts talents, however. For those occasions when you need to display an application on your TV that does not have built-in Chromecast support, it is also possible to display the entire content of your PC or Macs desktop.
How To Set Up To Connect Two Monitors
Since everything is ready, you can start connecting the two monitors to your laptop.
Note: Connect your monitors while your laptop is turned on. In most cases, Windows will detect when a new monitor is plugged in.
For example, I have VGA and HDMI ports on my laptop, and my external monitors have cables for VGA and HDMI ports as well:
1) Plug the cable of the first external monitor to the correct video port on your laptop. So I plug the VGA cable of the first external monitor into the VGA port on my laptop.
2) Plug the cable of the second external monitor to the other correct port on your laptop. So I plug the HDMI cable of the second external monitor into the HDMI port on my laptop.
3) On your laptop, right click an empty area of your desktop, if you are using Windows 10, click Display settings,
if you are using Windows 8/7, click Screen resolution.
4) You will see three displays labeled with 1, 2 and 3 in display mode. Generally speaking, the display 1 is the monitor of your laptop, and the display 2 and 3 are the external monitors.
5) Click the display 2, and select Extend desktop to this display in Multiple displays, and click Apply.
6) Click the display 3, and select Extend desktop to this display in Multiple displays, and click Apply.
7) Click OK to finish the settings, and you can now use the three monitors on your laptop.

Ports And Connections Are Important To Get Right
There are several different ways to connect a laptop to an external display, and the technologies have moved in and out of favor over time. You want to make sure that whatever monitor you buy will connect to your laptop. I’ll walk you through the different types of ports here, including DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, VGA and USB-C.
Most modern monitors will come with at least an HDMI port on the back.
If your laptop has an HDMI port that looks like this, you’ll only need a regular HDMI cable. Note: new monitors often don’t come with HDMI cables. So buy one.
If you have an older laptop you may see a blue or black VGA port, which connects to the left side of the adapter in the picture below. That won’t support a full 1080p resolution on its own, so you’ll need an adapter like this VGA to HDMI cable for your monitor:
Some laptops particularly gaming rigs have a DisplayPort input, which is marked with a little rectangle with two lines on each side of it, and connects to an input that looks like the picture below. You can order a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter here.
Some laptops, such as Microsoft Surface computers, also have mini DisplayPort plugs, which connect to the left side of the adapter below. This is the adapter you’ll want for that.

You can check the ports on the back or on the sides of your laptop. In addition to the ports on your laptop, the monitors should have the corresponding ports as well. That will save your time and money to connect them. Otherwise you will need to buy an extra adapter, such as DVI to HDMI adapter to have them match.
If you dont have the match ports for your laptop and your monitor
If the ports in your laptop is not the same as the connectors in your monitor cables, dont give up hope. There is workaround! You can try one of the methods below to continue:
- Use an adapter, such as an HDMI to DVI adapter. This works if you have two different ports for your laptop and your monitor.
- Use a switch spillter, such as a Display splitter to have two HDMI ports. This works if you have only one HDMI port on your laptop but you need to HDMI ports.
- Use a docking station, and it works in various circumstances.

Use Your Second Laptop As A Second Monitor
On the machine you want to use as a second monitor, head over to Settings | System | Projecting to this PC and set it up as you like, considering convenience vs. security.
Then, from your main machine – the one you are projecting from – just hit Windows Key+P, like you were projecting to a projector or second display. At the bottom, hit Connect to a Wireless Display.
Then wait a bit as it scans around for your PC. You can extend or duplicate…just like another monitor…
…because Windows thinks it IS another monitor.
You can also do this with Miracast TVs like my LG, or your Roku or sometimes Amazon Fires, or you can get a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter and HDMI to any monitor – even ones at hotels!
NOTE: It’s not super fast. It’s sometimes pixelly and sometimes slow, depending on what’s going on around you. But I just moved Chrome over onto my other machine and watched a YouTube video, just fine. I wouldn’t play a game on it, but browsing, dev, typing, coding, works just fine!
Get ready for this. You can ALSO use the second machine as a second collaboration point! That means that someone else could PAIR with you and also type and move their mouse. THIS makes pair programming VERY interesting.
Here’s a video of it in action:
Literally just learned from that I could use an extra laptop AS AN EXTENDED MONITOR. Built into Windows 10!
Choosing A Screen For A Two
You wont necessarily have to buy your second screen. If youve got an old monitor lying around the house, see if it will work with your laptop or desktop computer before getting rid of it. Even if its a bit dated by todays standards, you should be able to find an adapter to help. This will help you avoid spending any money on your extra display.
Still, you may have to buy new gear to complete your second-screen setup. Now that youve checked your computers ports, youll need a monitor that matches themor that can be made to do so with a suitable adapter. Ideally, look for monitors with USB-C, HDMI, or DisplayPort inputs, as these are the most common modern standards.
Once youve decided on the correct input, you can check other specs, such as screen size, resolution, and price. Bigger, higher-resolution screens will give you more room for your movies, spreadsheets, and video games, but they inevitably cost more, too. Its up to you where you want to make the compromise, but youll generally want to go for the biggest, highest-resolution screen your budget can accommodate.
If youre on a laptop, though, be aware that powering more pixels will take more graphics processing power and therefore use up more battery life. In other words, the bigger the second display, the bigger the drain on your battery.

Of course, if youre using one of the HDMI cables weve mentioned above, check that all of your ports are working properly and the cable is fitted properly. Since 2013, the Wi-Fi Alliance has rolled out the Miracast wireless display standard, using peer-to-peer Wi-Fi Direct to enable point-to-point connections between devices without the use of a router.
Miracast devices allow streaming of up to 1080p video and 5.1 surround sound, and the connection is secured using WPA2 encryption. Content is streamed directly through your device, meaning Miracast devices unlike Googles Chromecast do not need an external internet connection. Think of it as HDMI over Wi-Fi.
Sounds great, but how do you use it? Well, for starters you will need your devices to support Miracast. This should not be a problem with newer devices but older devices may need to use a Miracast adapter, which can be plugged into HDMI and USB ports.
In terms of the operating system, you will need to have Windows 8.1, Windows Phone 8.1, Android 4.4, BlackBerry 10.2.1, or greater. OS X and iOS do not work with Miracast, as Apple uses its own AirPlay technology. On the receiving end, most TVs released over the past few years will have inbuilt Miracast support. If your TV is older than this, so you will need to buy a Miracast dongle, such as Microsofts Wireless Display Adapter or Asuss Miracast Wireless Display Dongle.
Buying an adapter that matches the make of your phone, laptop, or tablet is a good choice, but the Miracast connection should work across devices regardless of brand.

If you are using a Mac dated 2011 or later, Apples proprietary AirPlay system lets you mirror your display wirelessly onto a TV. It is a terrifically simple system when mirroring is available, the AirPlay icon appears on the menu bar click on it to open a dropdown menu that shows the option to enable or disable mirroring. AirPlay lets you use your TV as a secondary display, so you can play videos on it at its native resolution while keeping your MacBook or iMacs display for desktop applications.
The catch is that AirPlay requires an Apple TV box connected to your television . Still, AirPlay is a supremely simple system, and while there is still a small amount of visible lag, the mirrored display feels more responsive than WiDi. AirPlay also has the advantage of working with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
