  • Once you are certain your two devices are connected via Bluetooth, navigate to Display Settings by searching Display Settingsin the bottom left corner search bar. Become familiar with this bar a logical string of keywords will usually get you to what youre looking for if you give it enough time to think.
  • Scroll down to Multiple Displays and click on Connect a Wireless Display.
  • A menu should slide in on the right hand side which shows available devices. Select the device you would like to connect as a display.
  • On your second laptop a pop up should appear letting you know a screen is trying to connect wirelessly. There is an option to pick if you want to Allow or Block, Always or Once. No matter what I do I cant seem to get the Always Allow option to stick, so I just leave it as is and click OK.
  • At this point the second screen should turn blue with white text and offer up a PIN, which the first computer will ask you to input. Once the PIN is verified the two screens will sync up, which kind of feels like magic the first time you do it. Youll now see a toolbar at the top of your main display which allows you to disconnect and access the settings for this connection. **If at this point something appears wonky instead of magical with your two screens, fear not! Lets return to the settings so you can finish creating your dual screen setup.
  • Back in Display Settings under Multiple Displays you will see a drop down menu which gives you options to:
  • Do Even More With Displayfusion

If, after all that, you’re still left wanting more, a third-party tool called DisplayFusion was designed with multiple monitors in mind. With DisplayFusion running in your system tray, you can gain more control over your wallpapers, create custom keyboard shortcuts, align windows to the edges of any display, or automatically dim the inactive monitor so you don’t get distracted.

Seriously, this program is chock full of useful options, so download the free version to try it out for yourself. It’s a bit more limited in features than the paid version, but if you like what you see, you can buy a license for $30. I purchased it seven years ago and haven’t regretted it for a second.

While some computers may support at least one additional monitor, they may limit how many monitors you can have connected at once. You can check your motherboard for dual monitor support by doing the following:
  • Look up your motherboard’s name in a search engine .
  • Select a search result that lists your motherboard’s features.
  • Look for a “Multi-Display”, “Multi-Monitor”, or “Dual Display” feature.
  • 2Determine your computer’s video connection type. Most newer computer graphics cards have at least two video-out ports that allow you to connect multiple monitors. These are usually connected to the graphics card on the back of the computer case. Many laptops have an HDMI port or DisplayPort on them. These may be on the side or back of the laptop. If your computer does not have a dedicated video-out port for a second monitor, check to see if it has a USB-C/Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 port. The following is a description of the different video connection types.
  • VGA: VGA ports are usually blue and rectangular with 15 holes. They usually have screw holes on the side used to secure the VGA cable. VGA is used on old computers. Most newer monitors do not support a VGA connection. However, you can connect a VGA to a newer monitor using an HDMI-to-VGA adapter.

What You Need To Run Dual Or Multiple Monitors

How To Connect Two Monitors To One Laptop (Windows 10-Best & Easiest way)

Most computers are able to connect dual or multiple monitors easily by just plugging them into the available ports on the computer. It’s the same way you would set upa single monitor, just with a few more steps after you’ve got everything hooked up.

To determine how many monitors your computer can easily connect to, count the graphic ports or check if there is a USB-C port. If there aren’t enough ports, you may be able to connect using other methods , but you may exceed the amount of monitors your computer can support. On desktops, it’s much more common to install an additional or better graphics card to get more ports.

Note: If you aren’t sure how many monitors your computer supports, or if you have trouble getting them all to work simultaneously, contact your computer’s manufacturer.

The Ideal Solution For Newer Laptops: Thunderbolt

Thunderbolt 3, which uses the new USB Type-C connector standard, is the newest way for laptops and tablets to output video. The advantages are obvious: a single cable can handle video, audio, standard data transmission and power, all at the same time. Not only does this reduce clutter on your deskassuming you have the hardware to take advantage of it, of courseit means laptops can be made smaller and thinner by consolidating ports.

So, if you have a laptop with Thunderbolt 3 and a Thunderbolt-capable monitor, this is by far the best solution. You can just hook up each monitor to one Thunderbolt/USB-C port.

However, its rarely that simple. Unless you have a very new laptop and very new monitors, youll probably need a bit more to make this work:

Thunderbolt has a massive amount of video bandwidth, and its more that capable of supporting multiple standard monitors . Specialized adaptersbasically mini-laptop docksare designed for the purpose of regular docking to a multi-monitor setup with mice, keyboard, and other connections.

Once USB-C and Thunderbolt become more common on laptops and monitors, itll be the best option around for connecting to just about any kind of video output. That may take a while, since some manufacturers seem oddly hesitant to adopt the standard.

Check The Ports Available On Your Laptop

Before shoving HDMI cables into ports in the back or side of your laptop, pause and closely look at those ports and see if one of them is an HDMI port.

Most laptops nowadays have HDMI ports, while a few others dont.

You might mistake a DisplayPort for HDMI because they resemble each other. Other ports found on laptops without an HDMI port include DVI, Thunderbolt, and VGA.

So ensure that your laptop has an HDMI otherwise, youll need an adapter to convert your ports to HDMI.

Configuration of two desktop computer monitors in a dual screen configuration

  • Use the Display option from the context menu of your desktop. Select the monitor that you want to use as your primary display from the list on the screen. Select Make this my primary display from the drop-down menu. The other monitor will instantly switch to serving as the secondary display. Then click after youre finished.
  • Set Up Dual Or Multiple Monitors On Windows

Note: It is normal for the display to flicker momentarily when connecting a monitor or adjusting certain settings.

Once you have all your monitors plugged in, there’s some additional steps to configure the arrangement of your monitors:

  • Right-click on your desktop, and then select Display properties or Display settings. Then, scroll down to Multiple displays, and select your desired option in the drop-down list.

  • Extend these displays: This lets you use both monitors and have something different on each one. One of your monitors will need to be marked as your “main” display and will be the default monitor for most Windows functions. Just select the monitor and click the checkbox to mark it as the main one.

  • Duplicate these displays: When using this setting, everything that is shown on one monitor will appear on the other. If the monitors have different resolutions, then all monitors with a higher resolution will be lowered to match the resolution of the monitor with the lowest resolution.

  • Show only on: Use this to leave multiple monitors connected at once but toggle the one you’re currently using. The other monitors will stay powered on but only show black or not display a video signal at all. This can be used when connecting a laptop to a better monitor without using the laptop’s built-in screen. In this case, make sure your laptop is not set to turn off when you close the lid, or it will turn off the external monitor.

How To Connect Two Monitors To My Laptop

We all know that multiple monitors can extremely improve our productivity and bring a great experience, especially when youre using a laptop. But how to connect external monitors to a laptop? Youve come to the right place. This article introduces an easy and clear guideline to connect two external monitors to your laptop.

Connect A Monitor To Every Output Type

Theres a good chance that your laptop has more than one display output type. For example, the computer this is being written on has both an HDMI port and a Mini-DisplayPort output. The first is wired to the dedicated GPU, and the second is wired to the integrated Intel GPU. Its possible to connect a monitor to both outputs and have both run at the same time. Both monitors should run alongside the internal display, adding up to a triple-monitor setup.

There are some limitations here to keep in mind. First, the GPU in question needs to support the number of displays required. Modern integrated CPUs usually support up to three displays, so that would cover two external units as well as the internal screen. Dedicated GPUs usually support three or more.

Before you go out and buy monitors, you need to confirm with your laptops manufacturer via their web page, manual, or customer support whether your particular laptop supports separate monitors on each display output.
