Huumm, looks very simple, right? Except for the fact that perhaps you don’t know what a switch is, especially if you are not a technical person.

How about the network cable? Do you know how it looks like and which one you should buy to have your devices connected in the network ?

Just don’t worry if you don’t have the answer for that, I will explain what those devices are in a while. Just in case you are a technical person and already now that, just feel free to skip the next section. Here we go…

Can I Just Plug A Voip Phone Into My Router

With most modern VoIP phones, you should be able to plug in and make calls. With Nextiva, thats what you can expect.

You may need to configure your firewall or router settings. For HD-quality calls, you need a high-speed internet connection with low latency.

For larger companies with more staff, you want to multiple switches and a VLAN solution.

What Equipment Do I Need

The exact equipment you need depends on which method of VoIP you’re using.

The first thing you’ll need is a broadband connection – a fibre optic one so it’s more reliable, and an unlimited one means you can talk as much as you want to. You’ll get the absolute best VoIP experience possible with a full FTTP or an ethernet connection, which are available with some business broadband providers.

  • For VoIP with an adapter, you’ll need a VoIP adapter , and a compatible phone. If it plugs into a router, you’ll need a compatible router too.
  • For VoIP with a computer, you’ll need a laptop or desktop computer with an internet connection, the right software, and either a headset or speakers and a microphone. Headsets are better for clarity and sound quality, but you can get by just fine without.
  • For VoIP with a smartphone, you’ll need a smartphone, connected to Wi-Fi and with your chosen app installed.

Some VoIP providers may do things differently, and might require specific equipment. Contact your provider for more info on this – and don’t worry, they’ll provide you with everything you need to get started, and guide you through the setup when you sign up.

There is also a probability of setting up a WiMAX extender which boosts transmissions up to seventy-five, so you can use your regular voice over IP connections locally.

Choose Your Voip Hardware

With VoIP, you have a few extra options that a call center with a traditional landline setup doesnt offer.

What equipment do you need for VoIP?

With hosted VoIP, desk phones arent a necessity. You can use hands-free headsets connected to your computer. If youre on a tight budget, you can also choose to keep your old analog desk phones and use VoIP adapters. This way, you dont have to rearrange anything in the office.

Here are your hardware options:

  • VoIP Desk Phones
  • Softphones
  • Analog Phones with VoIP Adapter

Of course, you dont need all this hardware you can choose a single option. With softphone apps, you can even use your existing devices to handle calls.

Get The Right Hardware

You dont need much specialized equipment to get started with VoIP. That said, there are a few purchases that can make things easier or open up new opportunities.

An IP phone, for example, gives you the experience of a traditional phone while over VoIP. These phones are available from a wide range of brands and with a variety of unique features. Cisco, for example, sells IP phones with as many as 16 lines. Alternatively, some companies sell adapters that enable traditional landlines to be used for VoIP.

IP phones typically connect to computers through an Ethernet cable. Its technically possible to run VoIP over a Wi-Fi connection, but wired connections tend to be faster and more reliable.

On the other hand, a physical phone isnt strictly necessary for a VoIP system. Digital phone apps offer the experience of VoIP without any additional hardware, and these services are typically affordable.

Skype for Business, for example, is now being absorbed into the Microsoft Teams subscription. Enterprise subscribers can add Calling Plans depending on their needs. Nextiva, another popular VoIP platform, offers annual subscriptions for as little as $19.95 per user per month. You can often get the same excellent sound quality with a small over-ear headset rather than a physical phone.

Sharing A Wireless Network Connection With A Wired Connection

I have a need to setup a VoIP phone that needs to be plugged into a wired net. However, I only have wireless Internet access as the modem/router are upstairs and not accessible to the phone. I have a Windows 7 laptop that has both a wired and wireless adapter. I would like to be able to plug the VoIP phone into the laptop, have the laptop perform routing so that requests to other networks are forwarded to the wireless network card, who then forwards it along to the router, etc. I would think that enabling Internet Connection Sharing on the wireless adapter might be able to accomplish this, but there are so few options published that I have doubts it would work – in particular, how does my VoIP phone get its IP assigned how is the routing/NAT handled? If my wireless card’s address is 192.168.5.144, and my wired card’s address is statically assigned to be 192.168.11.1, my VoIP phone is statically assigned to be 192.168.11.2, and ICS is enabled with the proper services enabled, would my VoIP phone be able to connect to the web?

Edit: Better yet, if I just enable bridging between the two connections, could the VoIP phone get an IP assigned BY the real router?

Check Your Line For Issues

In 2019, a VoIP telephone system is easy to set up. But that doesnt guarantee that everything will work correctly. Network or connection issues can impact your call quality.

The best way to check your line for issues is to make a few test calls. You might consider calling a diagnostic phone number that confirms your caller ID. Two test numbers include 444-4444 or 437-7950.

How is the audio quality? Are there any latency issues? If it’s not excellent, you might need to adjust your router settings to optimize for VoIP traffic.

Use Of Voip In Amateur Radio

Amateur or ham radio operators can use VoIP technology to set up temporary stations such as this one used by the Red Cross following Sept. 11.

Think of amateur radio, or ham radio, as an early version of the Internet. Using a worldwide network of radio towers, antennas and transceivers, amateur radio enthusiasts are able to communicate with fellow hobbyists around the globe, sometimes by voice and sometimes by Morse code.

Amateur radio is limited by the distance that radio waves can travel. To send a signal to the other side of the world requires calculated timing and more than a little bit of luck. Every 11 years, for example, there’s a peak in the number of sunspots produced by the sun, which increases the intensity of something called ionospheric propagation . By bouncing radio signals high into the ionosphere, ham radio users can send long-distance messages. During off-peak years it’s much more difficult.

Now amateur radio fans are using VoIP technology to link users around the globe. Here’s how it works. Ham radio has always relied on FM repeaters, large radio towers that act as base stations for accessing the radio network from home. By attaching an Internet-connected PC to these repeater stations, people can communicate with the repeater using VoIP.
