How To Encrypt Your Computer Using Veracrypt For Free | Quick & Easy Guide

If you have the Home version of Windows, you can still get in on the encryption game with Veracrypt, which is a free utility that can encrypt a folder, drive, or partition. This handy tool lets you mount an encrypted virtual disk in Windows, MacOS, and Linux. When you enter your password the disk is mounted and your files appear, but when you close the program, the disk unmounts and the files are no longer accessible. We didnt test the disk or partition encryption, so these instructions only apply to creating an encrypted folder. Lets jump in, shall we?

To get started, download the free utility and fire it up. To begin, youll need to create the encrypted volume, so click on Create Volume.

On the next screen we chose Create an encrypted file container, as were just looking for a repository for our sensitive documents and media.

Next we chose Standard Veracrypt volume as its fine for the vast majority of home users.

Next you have to choose the location for this file, so consider the size of the folder you will create, and make sure your storage device has enough room to hold it. We made a folder on one of our hard drives labeled Veracrypt since were good at hiding things, and then typed the name of the file into the dialogue box that appeared, resulting in what you see in the screenshot. Also note you can create this volume on a removable drive too.

But First A Word About Passwords

Any discussion about encryption needs to start with a different topic: password strength. Most forms of encryption require you to set a password, which allows you to encrypt the file and to decrypt it later on when you want to view it again. If you use a weak password, a hacker can break the encryption and access the filedefeating the purpose of encryption.

A strong password should be at least 10 characters, though 12 is better. It should include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as numbers and symbols. If you find letters-only easier to remember, such a password can still be secure if its significantly longer think 20 characters or more.

If youre unsure about whether your password is good enough, run it through Microsofts free password checker. Never use a password rated less than Strong.

How To Encrypt Your Disk In Mac Os X

FileVault, Apples disk encryption technology for Macs, is simple to enable. Open System Preferences, click on the Security & Privacy icon, and switch to the FileVault tab. If you see a button that says Turn Off FileVault then congratulations, your disk is already encrypted. Otherwise, click the lock icon in the bottom left so you can make changes, and click Turn On FileVault

Next you will be asked if you want to store a copy of your disk encryption recovery key in your iCloud account.

I recommend that you dont allow your iCloud account to unlock your disk. If you do, Apple and by extension anyone Apple is compelled to share data with, such as law enforcement or intelligence agencies, or anyone who hacks into Apples servers and can steal its data will have the ability to unlock your encrypted disk. If you do store your recovery key in your iCloud account, Apple encrypts it using your answers to a series of secret questions as an encryption key itself, offering little real security.

Instead, choose Create a recovery key and do not use my iCloud account and click Continue. The next window will show you your recovery key, which is 24 random letters and numbers. You can write this down if you wish. The recovery key can unlock your disk, so its important that it doesnt fall into the wrong hands.

What Disk Encryption Guards Against

If someone gets physical access to your computer and you arent using disk encryption, they can very easily steal all of your files.

It doesnt matter if you have a good password because the attacker can simply boot to a new operating system off of a USB stick, bypassing your password, to look at your files. Or they can remove your hard disk and put it in a different computer to gain access. All they need is a screwdriver, a second computer, and a $10 USB enclosure.

Computers have become an extension of our lives, and private information continually piles up on our hard disks. Your computer probably contains work documents, photos and videos, password databases, web browser histories, and other scattered bits of information that doesnt belong to anyone but you. Everyone should be running full disk encryption on their laptops.

Encrypting your disk will protect you and your data in case your laptop falls into the wrong hands, whether its because you accidentally left it somewhere, your home or office was burglarized, or it was seized by government agents at home or abroad.

Hard Drive Encryption In Linux

How do i encrypt my laptop.

Encryption on Linux is a little more complicated than on Windows 10 or macOS, with no standard preinstalled program available. It is possible to encrypt a hard drive without a full wipe. However, it will require that you have available unallocated space, enable Logical Volume Management and are willing to use the command line.

That said, most Linux distributions come with an option to encrypt your drive during installation. Because Linux is relatively easy to install, you should backup your data, grab your bootable installation device and set up an encrypted Linux environment.

Most Linux distributions use Logical Volume Management on Linux Unified Key Setup or LVM on LUKS for short so youll get a collection of encryption options when choosing where to install your operating system.

During the installation process, choose to encrypt your hard drive, when you first see the option. This is generally around the time youre formatting and partitioning drives.

Then choose your password and any other security measures, such as overwriting empty disk space.

Now continue the installation as normal, and after youve done this, recover your files from the backup.

How to Encrypt Your Computer with BestCrypt Volume Encryption v.3

On Windows 10, if you keep sensitive files on your device, it is crucial to take the necessary steps to protect them, and this is when BitLocker comes in handy. BitLocker is a feature that has been around for a long time, and it provides a way to encrypt the data on the hard drive to prevent unauthorized access to your information.

In a nutshell, encryption is the process of making any data unreadable without proper authorization. When you use encryption to scramble your data, it will continue to be unreadable even when sharing it with other people. Only you with the proper encryption key can decrypt the data to make it usable.

If you’ve never use BitLocker before, the feature offers two methods of encryption, including hardware-based encryption using Trusted Platform Module chip and software-based encryption using a password or USB flash drive to decrypt the drive and continue booting into Windows 10. Also, the feature allows protecting the data on the installation drive, secondary storage, and removable media with “BitLocker To Go.”

In this Windows 10 guide, we will walk you through the steps to set up BitLocker on your computer to make sure your sensitive data stays secure.

When you use the internet, all your traffic must pass through your ISPs servers. This allows your ISP to keep records of all the websites you visit. It also allows your ISP to gather your metadata.

Local network administrators can also analyze and track your internet traffic when you use public WiFi hotspots, and both ISPs and WiFi providers may collect data about you and share it with the government. A VPN encrypts your data before it leaves your devices, which stops your ISP or WiFi providers from being able to snoop on your traffic.

The Best Hard Drive Encryption Software

Depending on the operating system youre using, there are different options for encryption, but your computer is likely to have some form of encryption software available. These options are all solid, so well be using them, although they arent necessarily the best encryption software if youre willing to pay and want to encrypt only specific files.

However, the security of any software encryption is only as good as your password, so make sure you use a strong one. You can also use a flash drive as a passkey, so you dont need to remember a complex phrase, but be sure to keep these safe. If you lose your password and recovery key, you will lose your files.
