Update Windows Drivers And Apps
Youve probably heard that keeping your software up to date is a good idea for security. This is true and it can help performance too. Windows will automatically send you a notification when an update is available. You just need to make sure you dont keep putting it off.
If you think you might have missed an update, you can always check. Go to Start and click Settings or the settings icon. Then go to Updates & Security > Windows Updates.
Aside from your Windows operating system, drivers and apps should be kept up to date too. Again, this is good for both security and performance. If you think you might have missed an update, a quick online search should tell you which version you should be using.
Increase Or Upgrade The Processor Speed
Increasing the speed of the processor can improve your computer’s performance. There are two options for increasing processor speed: overclocking or upgrading.
Overclocking a processor means increasing its speed beyond what it’s designed to run stably. While overclocking can increase the processor speed, the increase is often not very significant, resulting in maybe a 10% or 20% speed increase at most. Furthermore, the processor itself must be capable of being overclocked. You would need to find the specifications for the processor in your computer to determine if it can be overclocked. An overclocked processor generates more heat, thus requiring a more powerful heat sink and fan to pull the excess heat away from the processor.
A safer alternative to overclocking is upgrading the processor in your computer. You would need to get the specifications for your motherboard to determine what type of newer processor may be used in it. You can then install the new processor in place of the existing processor.
Check For And Remove Viruses And Malware
A virus, malware, or malicious software could cause your PC to run slowly. Other symptoms include unexpected pop-up messages, programs that unexpectedly start automatically, or the sound of your hard disk constantly working.
The best way to handle viruses and malicious software is to try to prevent them by running antimalware and antivirus software and keeping it up to date. However, even if you take precautions, your PC can still become infected.
You can scan your PC for viruses or other malicious software by using Windows Security , which is included in Windows 11. For more info, see How to protect your Windows PC.
If youre using other antivirus or anti-malware software, see the documentation for that program to learn how to scan for viruses. Also, make sure multiple antivirus programs arent running at the same time. If they are, choose the one you want to run, and then disable or uninstall any others.
If you have another antivirus program installed and turned on, Windows Security will be turned off by default.
To scan for viruses using Windows Security
Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security, and then select Open Windows Security.Open Windows Security settings
Select Virus & threat protection, then select Protection updates under Virus & threat protection updates.
On the Protection updates screen, select Check for updates to make sure you have the most recent updates.
Do one of the following, depending on the results of the scan:

Find Programs That Eat Up Resources
If you find that your computer is suddenly running significantly slower, chances are there is a particular program to blame. One way to identify the culprit is to go into your task manager and find out whats eating up your resources.
Right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager. Click More details to find out information about the programs that are currently running on your computer. It should show you the Processes tab by default.
You can click each header to sort the list according to which applications are using the most of that particular resource. If you need to close something, try closing the actual application first. If it wont close, come back to the Task Manager screen, right-click the application, and hit End task.
Windows 7: Instead of accessing Task Manager, youll need to search for System Configuration.
Fix 7 Disable Intel Speedstep Utility
Intel’s SpeedStep function intervenes in the configuration and management of resources, frequencies, and voltages to improve the performance of your computer, however, this tool can cause instability in the system and cause performance problems, therefore it is advisable to disable it to avoid that kind of troubles.

Use Onedrive Files On
Some users may not want to stop OneDrive from syncing doing so defeats its purpose of making sure you have the latest files on whatever device you use. And it would also mean you wont be able to use OneDrive as a way to safely back up files.
But theres a way to get the best of both worlds: You can keep syncing to an absolute minimum and only do it when absolutely necessary. Youll speed up performance, and still get the best of what OneDrive has to offer.
To do this, you use Windows OneDrive Files on-Demand feature. With it, you can choose to keep only certain files on your PC, but still have access to all your other OneDrive files in the cloud. When you want to use one of those online files, you open it directly from the cloud. With fewer files on your PC sync, you should see a performance boost.
Right-click the OneDrive icon on the right side of the Taskbar and select Settings, then click the Settings tab on the dialog box that appears. Check the box next to Files On-Demand. Now click the OneDrive icon and select Open Folder. OneDrive appears in a File Explorer window. Right-click a folder whose files you want stored only in the cloud, but not on your PC, then select Free up space. Files from that folder will be removed from your disk, but still kept in OneDrive in the cloud.
Use this dialog box to turn on OneDrive Files on-Demand
Note that OneDrive Files on-Demand is available only on Windows Version 1709 and higher.

Defrag Your Hard Disk
Old mechanical hard drives can often suffer from fragmentation. This happens when the various bits that make up a complete file are scattered across the physical surface of the drive platter. Because the drive head has to travel further across the surface of the disk to read all the separate portions, this slows the machine down. Defragmentation – or defragging – restructures the disk so that all of the bits that make up various files are grouped in the same physical area, which hopefully increases the speed of hard drive access at the same time. Note, however, that because solid-state drives do not use spinning-platter disks, they are immune to fragmentation.
Its easy to check whether a physical disk needs defragging simply head to the storage tab in Windows 10s system settings menu, and click the option labelled Optimise drives. This will open the optimisation wizard, which allows you to analyse all of your machines drives individually and presents you with a percentage showing how fragmented each one is. From there, you can defrag the drive, which should result in more stability and faster performance.
Check For Low Disk Space And Free Up Space
You may improve performance if you free some disk space on your PC.
To check for low disk space
Select the Start button, then select Settings > System > Storage.
Your drives will be listed in the Storage area. Note the amount of free space and total size for each drive.
Note: If your PC is not low on space, try the next tip.
You can use Storage Sense to delete unnecessary or temporary files from your device, which can also free up space.
If you turn on Storage Sense, Windows will automatically free up space by getting rid of unnecessary filesincluding files in your recycle binwhen you’re low on disk space or at intervals you specify. The instructions below show you how to delete temporary files and how to turn on and configure Storage Sense.
If you can’t find Storage Sense on your device using the following steps, see the “Free up space with Disk cleanup” section below instead.
Note: You may not want to delete temporary files to improve performance. While these files may not be used at the moment, they help your apps load and run faster.
To delete temporary files with Storage Sense
Open Settings, then select System > Storage.Open Storage settings
Select Temporary files in the storage breakdown. Note: If you don’t see Temporary files listed, select Show more categories.
Windows will take a few moments to determine what files and apps are taking up the most space on your PC.
Select the items you want to delete, and then select Remove files.

Upgrade Hard Disk Drive To Solid State Drive
Conventional hard disk drives have moving components and hence have lower read or write speeds compared to solid-state drives . A solid-state drive uses flash memory and can read or write data much faster and uses less power, in turn, extends laptop battery life. Upgrading to a solid-state drive can provide significant improvement in performance.
Things to consider before upgrading the hard disk drive on your Dell computer:
- Form factor – Hard disk drives come in two form factors: 3.5-inch drive – used on desktop computers and 2.5-inch drive – used on laptops.
- Connector – What type of connector is available on your computer? IDE or S-ATA connector .
- Capacity – What is the maximum hard disk drive capacity that is supported by your computer?
To purchase upgrade components for your Dell computer, go to the Dell website.
If the issue does not exist in Safe Mode, the issue is likely related to a device driver or software. Ensure to update the device drivers and install any software updates that may be available for your computer including Microsoft Windows Updates.
However, if the issue still exists in Safe Mode, go to the next step.

Causes: Why Is My Hp Laptop So Slow
As we all know that HP laptops become slow with a period. If you use your laptop for the first time, it may seem brand new or just perfect without any freezes, lags, or hangs. When you get your laptop, the first time you think this time you don’t play any game or picture/video editing. You think you’ll keep your laptop clean or you must make sure that your laptop is fast enough to do any work.
There are many reasons which are responsible for making HP laptops lack in some places. These are some of the common reasons, .
We will discuss the three major causes, which are as followed:
You Need To Update Your Hard Drive
If youre still using a traditional hard disk drive , you might want to think about upgrading to a new solid-state drive . An HDD typically lasts for three to five years because it uses magnetic disks to store data. An arm sits on top of these platters and reads and writes data as the disks spin at speeds of thousands of RPM .
On the other hand, an SSD is made up of flash memory chips, so it does not have any moving parts. Because of this, it can read and write data several times faster than an HDD. In addition, SSDs are less noisy and consume less power than an HDD.
If you want to know more about the difference between SSD and HDD, check out our article here.
The fix: Many laptops these days come with empty M.2 slots that let you easily install an SSD. All you need to install these tiny hard drives is a screwdriver. And, if your laptop has an open M.2 slot, you can even keep your old HDD connected and use it as a backup drive.
However, if your laptop doesnt come with an empty M.2 slot, it can be complicated to figure out how to replace your hard drive. In order to find out how to replace the hard drive in your laptop, it is best to consult your users manual or look up the instructions online.

Fix : Fix Windows Register
There is also a concept of registry errors which makes your laptop very sluggish. When you install or uninstall any third-party programs this error occurs in such conditions. Information on errors like these is kept in the registry. This makes your computer working very slow and sometimes the computer isn’t even capable of shutting down.

Swap Out Your Hard Drive For An Ssd
If your laptop has a mechanical hard drive, then swapping it for a solid-state drive could pay dividends. As there are no moving parts, an SSD has read and write speeds far quicker than any traditional drive, as well as better reliability, and can revitalise an ailing system. If your laptop already uses an SSD, it might also be worth considering an upgrade to a faster SSD.
Over the past few years, SSD prices have gone down and capacities up, so putting one in your laptop won’t break the bank. However, as with RAM, many laptop hard drives wont be replaceable or will use specialised form-factors which prevent the use of third-party drives.
Assuming your laptop will support an upgrade, you can use a cloning tool to copy everything from your old disk to an SSD rather than reinstalling Windows from scratch. Numerous freeware tools can be used for this task, such as Todo Backup Free 9.0. Many SSD manufacturers will also include a license key for disk imaging tools with the purchase of a new drive.
Identify Programs That Slow Down Your Computer
If you have programs that use a lot of memory, you need to decide if theyre worth the resources theyre using. These could be high-level apps, items that start automatically that you dont use, or a program you opened previously and have forgotten about. Removing these programs can help speed up a computer.
