Free Up Space Rebuilding Search Indexer On Windows 10
The Windows Search database can sometimes grow very large due to the amount of content or indexing issues, and it can be one of the reasons the system drive is running out of space. If this is the case, clearing and rebuilding the database and modifying the index items can significantly reclaim storage space.
To rebuild the index of Windows 10, use these steps:
Under the “More Search Indexer Settings” section, click the Advanced Search Indexer Settings option.
Under the “Troubleshooting” section, click the Rebuild button.
Once you complete the steps, Windows 10 will clear and rebuild the Windows Search feature’s index database.
The only caveat is that during the rebuild, searches using the taskbar, File Explorer, and across the experience might be incomplete until files are re-indexed.
Enable Onedrive Files On
On Windows 10, the Files On-Demand feature should be already enabled in OneDrive, but if it is not, use these steps:
Click the Settings option.
Click the Uninstall button.
After you complete the steps, you may need to repeat the instructions to remove other features you may no longer need.

Fix #: Delete Unnecessary Files
Here are two approaches for you to do this. The first one is to select and delete some files you no longer use manually. The second one is to make use of Storage Sense. Storage Sense was introduced in Windows 10 version 1703 to get rid of temporary files and stuff in your Recycle Bin. If you have Storage Sense turned on in Settings, Windows can automatically free disk space by removing files you don’t need.
If your Storage Sense is still OFF, you can now make it work.
Step 1. Go to Start menu -> Settings -> System -> Storage. Toggle the option for “Storage Sense” ON and click the option “Change how we free up space“.

Alternatively, you can also use the built-in lightweight feature part of the NT File System to reduce the storage usage of current files maintaining normal access without the need to zip your files. The feature is available to compress files, folders, or the entire drive.
Important: Using data compression can negatively impact system performance because it has to compress and decompress data on the fly. You should use this option only if you do not have another option or have capable hardware.
Remove Old Windows Update Files Previous Installations
Windows has a tendency to hold onto old system files. For the most part, you can delete these files, particularly if you installed your current version of Windows over a previous version. To do this:
1. Open Windows Explorer, right-click the C drive and select Properties.
2. Click Disk CleanUp, then in the new window, click Clean up system files to open the advanced disk cleanup window.
3. Select the Windows upgrade log files checkbox and, if you have anything there, the Previous Windows installation checkbox.
Unbeknownst to me, my laptop still had plenty of space related to Windows Update Cleanup and Windows upgrade log files, using up nearly 3.5GB of hard drive space.
Cleaning up the unnecessary files consumes a few minutes but is worth the extra space gained on C drive.
There are other checkboxes here, but for the most part, they dont use up a ton of space and can be left alone. When youre ready, click OK to clean up your hard drive.

You can select a partition or a drive — even a removable drive, like a USB flash drive or a memory card — that is connected to your PC to save files for categories including apps, documents, music, photos and movies.

Why Is My C Drive Automatically Filling Up
With regular use, the C drive will keep filling up. Each file and folder you create has an impact on the available space in the C drive. Did you finish a System Restore? It will definitely allocate a certain amount of space in the C drive.
If you havent updated your computer in a long while, it can become vulnerable to bloatware, and it can be hard to delete files. Of course, we often forget to delete temporary files, unnecessary programs, and space intensive applications. These all play a role in making the C drive fill up automatically.
We have seen some of the best ways to clean up the Windows C drive. Its good to go through this routine every now and then, but its advisable to make sure it doesnt fill up in the first place. Store Files In The Cloud
If you take advantage of cloud storage via OneDrive or another service, you’re probably double-storing files and photos. Well, you don’t have to do this — all cloud storage services allow you to select which folders are downloaded and saved to your PC .
If you use OneDrive, here’s what to do: Right-click on the OneDrive icon in your system tray and choose Settings. In the Settings tab, check the box for Save space and download files as you use them. This setting will let you see the files you have stored in OneDrive from File Explorer on your PC, which pulls off the neat trick of showing you all of your local and cloud-based files in one spot. In File Explorer, you’ll see three different icons for OneDrive files in the Status column:
- Blue cloud: online-only file
- Green checkmark in white circle: locally stored file that might revert back to online when you run short on space
- White checkmark in green circle: locally stored file that will stay put, no matter how short on space you get
You can easily move OneDrive folders and files to your PC and back again. To move a file or folder stored in OneDrive to your PC, right-click it and select Always keep on this device. To remove the local copy of the file or folder and have it stored only on OneDrive, right-click it and choose Free up space.

Why Do You Need To Upgrade To Ssd
“I have an old Acer Aspire laptop with a 256GB hard disk. Now, I have bought a new SSD, and I want to upgrade the hard drive to it. I am wondering if anyone else is familiar with how to switch Acer hard drive to a new SSD? Any help would be greatly appreciated!”
Most Acer laptops, especially Aspire series are configured with Hard Disk Drive in default, like Acer Aspire One brings 120GB HDD, and Aspire V5/R3 brings 500GB HDD. If your computer is an older model or if it lags or freezes, upgrading it to an SSD is entirely necessary.
As is known to all, compared with traditional HDD, the SSD has faster reading and writing speed, less power consumption, noise-free operation, shock resistance, portable size, etc. Many PC users would like to upgrade HDD to SSD or SSD to larger SSD to improve the computer running performance, so as to Acer laptop users. Based on this need, we prepare this article to teach you to upgrade the Acer Aspire laptop to SSD easily and correctly. Follow the instructions below, and you can make it done.
What Is The Best Way To Deal With Windows 10 Updates On A 32gb Machine
Stuart bought a netbook with only 32GB of storage, and Windows 10 is already complaining that it doesnt have enough space for updates. What can he do?
I bought a budget Acer netbook knowing Id be forced to keep an eye on the applications I installed, and be more organised with external storage. Im holding up my end of the bargain, but Windows 10 most certainly isnt. Despite a relatively hassle-free installation, there has been an endless stream of prompts to free up space so it can update.
I have next to nothing installed except absolute essentials such as Chrome, OpenOffice and iTunes. My iTunes library is on an external USB, and isnt to blame. Despite this, I have less than 3GB left.
There seems to be the option of using external drive space to complete the Windows 10 upgrade, but what about updates once youre saddled with it? Stuart
I dont know if this is a response to my little rant last week, but either way, its a good question. For those who missed it, I said: I think 32GB Flash memory drives are too small for traditional laptop uses. Microsoft has reduced the size of Windows 10 … but its going to get bigger with use. There will be numerous upgrades, growing log files, swap files, and large caches of temporary internet files. Looking three years or six upgrades ahead, I cant see a 32GB drive coping without some massive clean-ups.
Either way, you probably need a couple of accessories: an SD card, and an external USB hard drive .

Check Your Chromebooks Free Storage
Its important to keep a tab on the storage left in your Chromebook, so that you can try the various methods to free storage and see the changes. You can check your Chromebooks free storage by going to the Files app. In the app, click on the three-dot menu button at the top-right corner where you should see the free storage left.
Another way to check storage is by going to Chrome and entering chrome://quota-internals in the address bar. This should list the free disk space in your Chromebook. If you want to learn more about such hidden Chrome URLs, head over to our linked article. Anyway, now that you have checked your Chromebooks free storage, here are the ways to free up storage in Chrome OS you can try.
Delete Temp File And Prefetch Data
Windows accumulates temporary and cache files like its in an episode of Hoarders, filling your limited storage with old items you probably dont need. Performing a disk cleanup will delete a good chunk of the junk data stored in the Windows temp folder. To get rid of it all though, youll have to delete it manually.
Windows is notorious for amassing tons of junk data over time. Delete it to reclaim storage space on your tablet.
Restart your tablet, and when Windows has fully loaded, close or exit from any applications that placed an icon in your system tray to ensure theyre not using any temporary files.
Next, click on the Libraries shortcut in your Taskbar, select This PC from the left column in the resulting window, and then double-click on your C: drive. Double-click on the Windows folder and delete all of the files in the Prefetch and Temp folders . As long as you have restarted and dont have any applications running, deleting the contents of these folders should have no ill effects.
Finally, go back to the root of the C: drive and navigate to the C:UsersAppDataLocalTemp folder and delete everything in there as well.
If you havent taken the time to purge old prefetch and temp data from your system, you may be surprised by how much space it was taking up.
