Stop Running Background Apps
The next items that could be taking up RAM are your applications that are set to automatically run in the background. You may have used your computer for years before noticing some of these apps taking up your RAM storage. This can quickly exhaust your memory, battery, and data bandwidth.
To stop background apps:
Applications are often automatically set to run in the background of your device. This enables them to display notifications and update their software automatically. By turning this off on apps you dont use, you can save RAM storage.
Configure And Run Storage Sense
If you want to better configure the Storage Sense feature, click the Configure Storage Sense or run it now link. You can then determine how often the tool will run and when temporary files and downloads will automatically be deleted.
Open the Run Storage Sense drop-down menu to determine how frequently the feature should runEvery day, Every week, Every month, or During low free disk space. Unless you’re constantly running low on space, running it monthly should be a good place to start.
Under the Temporary Files header, check the box next to Delete temporary files that my apps aren’t using to automatically remove unneeded temporary files on a regular basis. You can also tell Storage Sense to automatically purge files in the Recycle Bin and Downloads folder dailyevery 14, 30, or 60 days, or never.

Laptop Storage Explained Ssd Or Hdd
Laptop storage is all about how much music, movies, documents and apps your laptop can hold. There are two main laptop storage options, both different forms of hard drives with capacity measured in GB.
Hard disk drives are the traditional storage methods and found in the majority of laptops. These generally have capacities from around 320GB to 2TB â though larger ones are available. However, they can be noisy and slower to load, best only if you require a lot of storage space.
Solid-state drives use flash storage to deliver faster read/write speeds at quieter levels. They have less space than HDDs, with capacities from about 256GB to 1TB â but your laptop loads much quicker with SSD. So programs and web pages can be viewed faster. The LG gram has 256GB to 1TB SSD .

The Windows Search database can sometimes grow very large due to the amount of content or indexing issues, and it can be one of the reasons the system drive is running out of space. If this is the case, clearing and rebuilding the database and modifying the index items can significantly reclaim storage space.
To rebuild the index of Windows 10, use these steps:
Under the “More Search Indexer Settings” section, click the Advanced Search Indexer Settings option.
Under the “Troubleshooting” section, click the Rebuild button.
Once you complete the steps, Windows 10 will clear and rebuild the Windows Search feature’s index database.
The only caveat is that during the rebuild, searches using the taskbar, File Explorer, and across the experience might be incomplete until files are re-indexed.

Turn On Storage Sense
You can automate some of this cleanup by heading back to the Storage page in Settings and toggling on Storage Sense. You can set it so Windows automatically deletes unused temporary files, as well as files that have been in the Recycle Bin and Downloads folder for more than a day or up to 60 days. You can also choose to move local files off your PC and to the cloud via OneDrive if they haven’t been opened for a specified period of time. I’m pretty good about emptying the Recycle Bin on something approaching a regular schedule, but I’m also very happy to have Windows track down and eradicate needless temp files and old downloads.
Use Lighter Apps And Manage Running Programs
What if you really need to clear RAM on your computer, but the apps hogging RAM are necessary to your workflow? You can handle this in two ways.
First, try using lighter app alternatives when you can. If your computer struggles when you have Photoshop open, try using a smaller app like Paint.NET or GIMP for minor edits. Only use Photoshop when you’re fully dedicated to working on a project.
Second, pay closer attention to the programs you have open. Close any software that you’re not actively working with. Bookmark open browser tabs that you want to read later, then close them to free up RAM. Keeping a tighter leash on what’s running at once will help free up RAM.
Be sure to expand the System Tray section of the taskbar, located at the bottom-right of your screen, by clicking the small arrow. Each program that has an icon here is running in the background, so you should right-click and choose Close or Exit on anything you don’t need.
Google Chrome is in its own category here, as it’s notorious for gobbling RAM. See how to control Chrome’s memory usage for tips. If you work in your browser a lot, it might be better to switch away from Chrome in favor of another option that’s easier on RAM.
No matter what browser you use, you should check your browser extensions and remove any you don’t need. Every extension you add to your browser consumes extra memory, so getting rid of those is an easy way to reduce RAM usage further.

Things You Should Consider Before Upgrading Or Replacing Your Hard Drive
Are you wondering if its time to upgrade or replace your hard drive? Here are a few things to consider before making that decision. How old is the drive, how many hours do you use it each day, and what programs do you run on the computer?
If you have an older laptop with limited RAM then upgrading your hard drive may be necessary. Once youve determined whether or not this is a good idea for your setup, there are some other factors to think about: size of the new hard drive, data transfer process and cost.
Many people in business will need a larger capacity hard drive so they can store their files and work without running out of space all the time. So ask yourself before upgrading your hard drive.
Things to be consider:
Scan For Virus And Malware
When you download any software programs or extensions to your computer there is the chance they could have a virus or malware attached. Once you have malware on your computer, it can steal both your information and your RAM space. To prevent picking up any malware or viruses try using Panda Security antivirus to protect your computer and memory.
Now is the time to stop file hoarding. Many of the files on your computer are taking up RAM space without you realizing it. Now you know how to safely declutter your computer of these unused files and how to free up RAM so your computer runs more efficiently.

Defragment Your Hard Drive
When adding a new file to your computer, a particular portion of your hard drive is allocated to store the file. However, after constantly saving and deleting files, a disk will become fragmented. This means that there are gaps in your hard drive where subsequent files would not fit, so they are left vacant.
As well as affecting your usable free space on your hard drive, fragmentation also has a negative impact on your computers ability to store your data in sequence, hence slowing down its speed.
Luckily, Windows has us covered, providing a Disk Defragmentation tool. Using this tool, we can analyze which of our drives would benefit from defragmentation, before we commit to defragging. This is very useful, as if you have a large drive full of data, it may take a substantial amount of time to defrag.
To make use of this tool, hit your Windows icon, or Start menu, then start typing Defragment. From the search list, click Disk Defragmenter. Once you see the tools window, you can elect each drive and analyze them to determine what percentage of them is fragmented. Higher percentages mean higher fragmentation.
To defragment your disk, just hit Defragment Disk.
Expanding The C Drive Windows 10 0r 7
Step 1: Now that you have unpartitioned space, right-click on the C drive within Disk Management, and click on Extend Volume.
Step 2: Now, click on Next, in the Extend Volume Wizard, and click on Next >.
Step 3: Now, type in the space in MB that you want to add to C drive, and click on Next >.
Step 4: After that, click on Finish.
Now, the storage space within your C drive has increased, and you can use it for all your requirements. If you want to reduce the storage space, you can do that, as well, by the method I just discussed to shrink a volume or partition.
This tutorial is going to apply on all drives and is not limited just to the C drive on your Windows computer. One thing that you should remember is that you cannot expand the volume by borrowing space from another partition on a different disk. For example, if you have a solid-state drive of, say 500 GB, and the whole drive belongs to C drive, you cannot borrow space and append it to the C drive, if you have another disk connected to your system. To expand any volume, the volume that needs to be expanded, and the unpartitioned space should be on the same physical disk.
You can always use some third-party disk managers to get more user-friendly options to shrink and expand the volumes, however, I will not recommend using them as you can do everything using the tools available within Windows 10.

What Is Laptop Memory
RAM is also referred to as system memory â or just memory for short. It stands for Random Access Memory. It puts files, applications and web pages nearby for faster access. One way of looking at it is when cooking, you get the ingredients from the cupboard and place them on the kitchen worktop, within easy reach. RAM is just the same.
Why choose bigger RAM?
RAM is measured in gigabytes . For the best laptop RAM, choose a bigger GB number. The more GB your laptop has, the more applications you can have open and working at once. When you donât have enough RAM, your laptop memory becomes overloaded and overworked. With the best laptop memory, multitasking will be much easier. Work across documents, stream music and browse the web â without any noticeable slowdown.

How Much Laptop Storage Do You Really Need
Apple doubled the base storage of both its newest MacBook Air and MacBook Pros to 256GB.
When buying a laptop, one of the most important decisions you have to make is figuring out how much internal storage you need. Depending on the amount, it can drive up the price of the laptop considerably. For instance, Apples latest MacBook Air can be configured with either 256GB or 512GB of internal storage, and if you get the higher-end model thats going to cost you an extra $200 thats a lot. Microsofts Surface Laptops, meanwhile, come in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB varieties. How much do you really need? There is no perfect answer, of course. But there are some handy rules of thumb and wrinkles to know about.
What’s The Difference Between Laptop Memory And Storage
Laptop memory and storage are often thought interchangeable. But they are quite separate. RAM helps your computer to perform everyday tasks, such as loading applications. It also boosts multitasking, remembering your place in one application when you move to another. Storage covers how much stuff your laptop can hold â and also how fast it can do things.
This is the amount of capacity the laptop has for storing documents, photos, movies and programs long term. Storage is measured based on the size of the hard disk drive or solid-state drive in gigabytes .
The amount of memory a laptop has refers to how fast you can access data stored in the short-term. This is measured by the size of the RAM. For a laptop to open a document or load an application quickly, it relies on more memory.
