Can I Set A Wireless Connection With My Usb Modem Without Laptop

Easiest way to HARDWIRE your internet 1of2

With most of the current devices you can, although the modem may need to be configured beforehand. A modern portable Internet modem is an autonomous device and will work entirely on its own as long it has a power source either a battery or a cable plugged into a USB port. Simpler models that have little to no settings may be able to work out of the box, while more sophisticated ones would need a one-time setup, but after that, youre good to go.

Option 1 Powerline Adapters

This is almost certainly the best way to get wired internet upstairs or anywhere else in your house. Its fast, simple, and fairly inexpensive.

The only downside is that the internet speeds will be a little bit slower than our second option of installing ethernet cables.

The way that powerline networking works are actually really simple. Basically, you plug one powerline adapter into a wall socket near your modem or router and run a single ethernet cable to it. Then, in any room that you want to have an internet connection, you plug in another powerline adapter and then use ethernet cables to get the connection from the adapter to your device.

The powerline adapters actually use the electrical wiring in the home to pass the internet connection between the access point and all the other adapters plugged into your devices.

Then, you basically have a simple home network, much like youd have using ethernet cables, but without the hassle of cutting holes in the wall and crimping wires.

Many powerline adapters also work as wi-fi signal repeaters or extenders, but you can easily disable the wifi on these devices and just use them for the pass-through internet connection.

The other big benefit of this method is that just like using ethernet cables, this method produces virtually no EMF radiation.

Connect Your Router To The Modem

Chances are, you already completed this step. But if youre setting up your router for the very first time, you need this connection first before you tether your computer to the router.

If you have a standalone modem

Connect your router to your modem using an Ethernet cable. Most routers have multiple Ethernet ports, but theres one specifically labeled Internet or WAN used for connecting directly to the modem. It typically has a different color than the other Ethernet ports.

If you have a wireless gateway

Be sure that you properly secure the wireless gateway to the internet connection entering your home. The connection type depends on the internet you have.

For example, cable internet comes into your house via a coaxial cable, whereas connecting to DSL requires you to connect your modem to a filter, which then plugs into any phone jack. We provide more information about cable types below.

Giving Your Wired Connection Higher Priority

Press the Win + R keyboard combination and type ncpa.cpl into the run box, then hit enter.

When the Network Connections window opens you will need to hit the alt key to display the classic menu bar.

Once its available click on advanced, and then choose the Advanced Settings option.

Here you will see the preference of your network connections. In order to make your laptop use a wired connection, if available, even when connected to a wireless network, you will need to select Wi-Fi and then click on the green arrow pointing down.

This will automatically bump Ethernet to the top.

Thats all there is to it.

Ethernet Accessories Can Help You Connect Any Device

Installing Hard Wired Internet

Although newer, slender models of laptops don’t tend to have Ethernet ports, you can still utilize an Ethernet cable with a USB or USB-C adapter.

Another common accessory to pair with an Ethernet cable is a network switch. This add-on lets you convert an Ethernet connection into multiple ones, allowing you to, for instance, hardwire both your Xbox and Chromecast to the internet at the same time.

How I Will Check If My Laptop Is Connected With 4g Or 3g

The details may vary from system to system, but in broad strokes, the process will look like this:

  • Check which connection is offered by your data plan
  • Check whether the SIM card supports 4G
  • Check whether your device supports the desired mode
  • Alternatively, you can choose from a plethora of software solutions that give detailed information about the connection, although their reliability varies depending on the setup you are using.

When it comes to your footage and how and where it’s stored it’s best to use the dLink app or the mydlink.com website. These are both encrypted delivery systems.

Remember, bad actors and hackers can access your data through your WiFi connection. Please change your passwords often and name your WiFi router something clever. Avoid using you address or name.

You can also access the footage through your browser with a password-but we don’t recommend that method as it’s not encrypted and vulnerable to hackers.

See the review of wireless cameras from Consumer Reports:

“. . . In contrast, D-Link doesn’t store video from the DCS-2630L in the cloud. Instead, the camera has its own, onboard web server, which can deliver video to the user in different ways.

Users can view the video using an app, mydlink Lite. The video is encrypted, and it travels from the camera through D-Links corporate servers, and ultimately to the users phone. Users can also access the same encrypted video feed through a company web page, mydlink.com Those are both secure methods of accessing the video.

But the D-Link camera also lets you bypass the D-Link corporate servers and access the video directly through a web browser on a laptop or other device. If you do this, the web server on the camera doesnt encrypt the video.”

How To Set Up A Laptop To The Internet

If you want to connect your laptop computer to the Internet, you have two distinct options. All laptop computers come with built-in wireless adapters allowing you to connect them to wireless Internet networks. If you don’t have a wireless Internet network in your home, you’re going to need to use an Ethernet cable to physically connect your laptop to an Internet modem to create a wired broadband connection. Both options can be completed in just a few minutes.

An Ethernet Cable ‘hardwires’ Your Computer To An Internet Connection

How-To Hard wire Internet. Easy Install Hardwired Ethernet Connect to Phone, Laptop Turn off WiFi!

An Ethernet cable, sometimes referred to as a network cable, is a cord that runs from a router, modem, or network switch to your computer, giving your device access to the local area network – in other words, giving it internet access.

The benefit of hardwiring your internet connection is that it’s faster and more consistent. Without walls or other objects blocking your Wi-Fi signals, you don’t have to worry about sudden drops in internet speed.

Gaming with an Ethernet cable means less lag and faster loading times for multiplayer games. And every major game console can connect with an Ethernet port – although to connect a Nintendo Switch, you’ll need an adapter.

Just be careful not to unplug your cable while you’re using it, as doing so will disconnect you from the internet instantly. Luckily, Ethernet cables are made to snap snugly into place, so it’s hard to pull them out accidentally.

Ethernet cables come in a range of lengths and colors, but both sides of the cord are the same, regardless of the brand of cable or device you’re hardwiring.

How To Connect A Laptop To The Web

There are four main ways to connect a laptop to the Internet — wirelessly, with an Ethernet cable, with a mobile broadband modem or networking card, or by tethering to your cell phone. Each method requires a different process. For business owners that want to save money without sacrificing Internet speed, wireless and Ethernet connections provide fast connection speeds, requiring a service plan with an Internet service provider such as a cable or DSL company. Cell-phone connections provide an extra level of convenience, but you may experience dropouts and you must have an Internet access plan with your provider that includes tethering — usually an extra fee.

Determine How Many Ports You Need

Okay, this part is kind of fun I think. You basically draw a simplified version of your floor plan for each floor of your home or office, so that you can think through where in each room you many need access to the internet.

For example do you need to have internet access in the kitchen? If you do will you need it by the table, or over by the kitchen counter?

The same is true of a room like a living room. You will need to run internet to your TV. But will you need ports near the chairs and sofas around the room?

And then you just follow this pattern and think through each room, and draw a port in each spot where you decide you will need one. This will tell you how many ports you will need and help you plan which walls you will need to run the wires to.

      Set Up Your Base Station

Now that you have planned out each room of your house that you plan on running internet to, you know what walls you will put Ethernet outlets on, and how many Ethernet cables you will be running. You also know how many ports you need in your internet switch. Now you need to plan out where the best place for your internet base station to be to be is. Your base station is where you want your internet switch to be located. This image below is from www.fiber-optic-cable-sale.com. This kind of gives you a visual of what your internet network will look like :

The reason why the location of your switch in your home is so important is because it is from this point that you will be running wires to the rooms where you want internet. For example if your internet modem is clear on one end of your home, that may not be the best place to run Ethernet cables to the rest of your home from. It might be better to either run the coaxial cable that brings internet to your modem to a more central part of your house, and then locate your switch and run all your Ethernet cables from there. Or another option might be leave your modem in the far corner of your home, and run one Ethernet cable to a more central location where you locate your switch, and have that then be the base station from where you run all the Ethernet cables to the rest of the house.
