How Much Ram Do You Need For A Laptop
Random Access Memory, or RAM, is the unsung hero of the computing world. Computer manufacturers love to boast about CPU power, or the size and resolution of the display, or even more commonly in the case of laptops, how thin the computer is. Now dont get us wrong, these are all important specs, but savvy computer shoppers know to also pay attention to a lesser-promoted spec: How much RAM the machine has.
Why does this matter and how can you know what numbers you should be looking for? Read on, and we will tell you everything you need to know and it wont feel random at all.
How To Upgrade Laptop Memory
Before you start, you need to determine where the RAM DIMM or DIMMs are on your laptop, and how youll reach them. The bigger your laptop is, the more likely it is that youll be able to access the memory without disassembling it completely. The smaller and lighter your laptop is, the more likely it is that the memory is soldered to the motherboard and cant be changed at all. Ultralight laptops almost never have user-accessible memory.
Most laptops that allow user-accessible memory upgrades to do so either through a small access panel on the bottom of the case, or by performing some level of disassembly . Consult your laptops user manual or do some web searches to find information for your model.
Before you start, turn off your laptop and remove all cables, accessories, and batteries.
My ThinkPad T450s is pretty middle-of-the-road here: it requires me to remove the battery, take out eight different screws, and pop off the metal bottom to access the RAM. Other designs only require you to remove a single screw, then take off a sectional cover. I only have access to one DIMM slot, the other is soldered to the motherboard.
To insert a new DIMM, I have to remove the one thats already in the slot. To do this, I gently pull the two tabs locking down the DIMM on either side. The RAM DIMM springs up at a diagonal angle.
In this position, simply grip the card gently and pull it out of the slot. Be careful not to touch the electrical contacts, and set the module aside.
Check For And Remove Viruses And Malware
A virus, malware, or malicious software could cause your PC to run slowly. Other symptoms include unexpected pop-up messages, programs that unexpectedly start automatically, or the sound of your hard disk constantly working.
The best way to handle viruses and malicious software is to try to prevent them by running antimalware and antivirus software and keeping it up to date. However, even if you take precautions, your PC can still become infected.
You can scan your PC for viruses or other malicious software by using Windows Security , which is included in Windows 10. For more info, see How to protect your Windows 10 PC.
If youre using other antivirus or anti-malware software, see the documentation for that program to learn how to scan for viruses. Also, make sure multiple antivirus programs arent running at the same time. If they are, choose the one you want to run, and then disable or uninstall any others.
If you have another antivirus program installed and turned on, Windows Security will be turned off by default.
To scan for viruses using Windows Security
Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security and then select Open Windows Security.
To scan for malware and viruses with Windows Defender Offline
Save any documents or anything else you might have open on your PC.
Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security and then select Open Windows Security.Open Windows Security settings
Try to reproduce the performance issue.

How Much Ram Do You Actually Need
For basic, day-to-day computing, 8GB of memory should be sufficient. That gives you enough room to fully load Windows, plus a few productivity apps, and a web browser. As long as you dont open dozens of tabs in your browser or forget to quit apps that you no longer need to have running, you shouldnt encounter any performance issues. If youre conscientious about closing unused apps, youll find that 8GB is also enough RAM for most game titles , as long as youre not running them at their maximum settings.
Once you start needing multiple apps open at once, for instance, an email client, a browser, Adobe Acrobat, several Microsoft Office apps, and perhaps a communication client like Slack, those 8GB of RAM will be quickly overwhelmed. If youre a major multi-tasker, youll find that 16GB of RAM will give you the extra room you need to keep all of those programs running smoothly. Its unlikely youll find a game that cant run very smoothly with 8GB of RAM, though you may have to be careful about which other programs are running at the same time. Crysis 3 might be content sharing the stage with Microsoft Word and Outlook, but youll need to stay away from heavier demands like websites with lots of ads and auto-play videos.
More resource-intensive operations may require even more RAM, 32 GB or more. This amount of memory is a must-have for powerhouse workstations. This is a good fit for the types of jobs that need a lot of computing power, typically in a professional setting.
Be Sure That Youre Using An Official Bios
According to users, this problem was caused by a modified BIOS. Few users reported that Windows 10 wasnt using all RAM because they had a modified version of BIOS.
However, they managed to fix the issue by flashing their BIOS and using the official version instead.
Modified versions of BIOS can be unsafe to use, so be sure that youre always using an official BIOS if you want to avoid any issues.

Increasing Virtual Memory On Windows
This page contains instructions for 32-bit Windows users who need to increase the amount of accessible address space for X-Plane. You only need to follow these instructions if X-Plane takes you to this page on startup. This procedure does not apply to 64-bit Windows , or Mac/Linux .
The primary reason for extending the size of virtual memory in Windows XP/Vista 2GB systems is to prevent X-Plane crashes when too many graphics features are selected. Even default rendering options settings can be too robust for some systems on initial startup of X-Plane 10. Before performing any of the procedures below look at the log.txt file found in the main X-Plane 10 folder. Ascertain that virtual memory is set at Maximum Virtual Memory : 2147352576 before increasing virtual memory to 3GB.
Why You Need To Increase Dedicated Video Ram
Getting a more RAM is a must to increase the execution time for sure, but as a regular user, you dont need any individual or external RAM chip for your PC. The external RAM chip is required to those users who frequently plays high-quality graphics games on their PC. As we all know that if you want to get some good gaming experience on your PC, then two things are a must. The first thing is that you need to have a considerable amount of RAM in your PC so that the execution time becomes short as usual. The second thing here is that you should have high-quality graphics to experience a smooth gaming experience.
So, to get an excellent graphical performance of every PC game, you need to have enough Video RAM . The VRAM is a specially reserved kind of memory for the gaming purpose so that the gamers will get high-quality graphics on their PC while playing customized games of higher disk space. VRAM is an extraordinary reserved memory which is better optimized than regular RAM.
If you increase the VRAM in your PC, then the extra load which was putting on the normal RAM will get removed. Therefore, it would be a good call to increase the VRAM in your PC if you are a dedicated gamer. VRAM will also help you improve the resolution of your screen to get some good gaming experiences. Basically, there are two ways in which any user can increase the VRAM on their PC without spending extra money:

How To Install Ram In Your Pc
With the buying considerations out of the way and 16GB of DDR4 memory freshly delivered to your door step, its time to install your new RAM. Its a quick and rather painless taskassuming youve done all your homework.
Mentioned in this article
First, shut down your computer and unplug all of the cables connected to it. Then remove the side of the computer case so you can access the motherboard.
The RAM slots are adjacent to the CPU socket. Look for the big heat sink at the top of the motherboard, and youll see either two or four memory slots next to it.
These are the motherboard slots you insert your RAM into.
Before you can install the new memory youve purchased, you have to remove the old kit. Start by toggling the plastic retention clips at either end of the memory slots so you can pull out the old RAM.
Release the toggles at the end of the RAM channel in order to remove your old memory.
While youre there, remove any dust from the memory slots, either by blasting the area with compressed air or by vacuuming gently.
Now its time to put in the new RAM kit. Make sure the memory module is correctly oriented: The notch in the bottom edge of the RAM must match up with the rise in the memory slot. If youre not filling all the available RAM channels, read your motherboards manual to see which specific slots you should fill first. Placing RAM in the incorrect slots could result in some performance degradation.
Snap the channels toggle closed again to lock in your RAM.
